"Can we really call that whale a "killer"? Is the issue really that black and white?"
1st Runner Up: "I call them "snuggly-fish", so this has all been a huge shock to me."
(Plus, keep scrolling for helpful design ideas for whale pool safety apparatus.)

Of course thier not "stressed out". Thier on welfare, sucking back taxpayers money to be hand fed by the system.
The linked NY Times article is hilarious,or very depressing, depending on whether you expect much from a national newspaper. This is one of the many gems,"“This was not an insane, uncontrollable act,” Mr. Ellis told The Associated Press. “This was premeditated.”---
Yeah,OK. I'd be looking at possible collusion with those dastardly squirrels who were likely rifling through her glove compartment while the coppers were distracted.

Apparently chimpanzee's, alligators & pythons aren't wild. More accurately, the kumabaya factor has a threshold directly proportional to dollar signs.

THAT is the quote of the month. Just ask WWF or People Eating Tasty Animals or any of the other myriad of so called animal "welfare" groups out there. If it doesn't bring them sucker bucks,or in WWF's case,AGW bucks, then the animal is wild and not to be counted, unlike pandas or seal pups or killer whales.
I'd say the issue is as black and white as the whale.
I blame it on lack of tenure.
The whale killed, therefore he is a killer.
Is he a murderer and therefore culpable? That is
a much more difficult question. Murder is legally
defined. If a Canadian solder shot and killed a
German soldier at 10:59 on 11 November 1918 he
was doing his duty to King and country and was
a virtuous man. If he shot
and killed a German soldier at 11:01 on the same
day, and if he knew the time, and if he knew about
the armistice, and if the German was not menacing him or his comrades,
then the Canadian was a murderer. In either case he
was a killer.
The concept of murder is defined in most human societies but is not generally applied to animals,
even if they are sufficiently intelligent to form intent.
The fooforaw about the defunct trainer is really rather silly -
if someone falls in with a pack of wolves, and is killed by the wolves,
well, we all know that's what wolves do. Orcas are easily as aggressive carnivores as are wolves.
Anyway, large animals are inherently somewhat dangerous -
people have been injured and killed even by sheep, when the sheep happened to
feel out of sorts.
People cannot treat wild animals like pets or amusements. What did they think would happen?
More like serial killer whale!
Dear Kate,
I'm not known for my sensitivity, and in fact I'm probably cruel and heartless. While I don't necessarily endorse the "let's kill the killer " attitude for animals (as opposed to human killers for whom I have no qualms about executing when eithe duly and lawfully convicted of evil crimes, or else by law enforcement officers or potential victims etc left with no alternative); I also don;t exactly feel safe with the idea of just letting a creature that's already killed several people go...
I have a compromise to suggest here though; one most apposite given several recently-publicised incidents in this country (Australia) recently. Give "Tilly" to the Japanese, so they can do some more "research"... I think this will work on so many levels...!
Let me get this straight - if your dogs bites someone, intended or not, the dog is put down, but if a Killer (Orca-politically correct) Whale, kills 3 people, nothing is done because the whale did not intend to do it? Who the H E double hockey sticks knows what a Killer Whale is thinking or what its intentions are? Mind you, this whale seems to not have ever missed his target...indictive to me she knew what she was doing.
I guess people prefer denial and do not care to know why they are called killer Whales in the first place.
It's all about money. Killer Whale lives cause she will draw killer crowds with lots of money to be made in ticket sales. Humanity or should I say Whalanity (the term humanity has utterly and completely lost it meaning in recent decades)has absolutely nothing to do with the decision to keep Tilly alive.
If they really want to make money. I suggest they hire to Pamela Anderson from PETA to spend time with and feed the whale from now on...and film her while doing it. Snuffy the Whale.
