Struggling for Relevance

... not knowing when enough is enough:

If the idea of talking to reporters about politics during the Olympic Games was Michael Ignatieff’s idea of getting attention, he could at least come up with some original ideas. The only thing more pathetic than a dog standing on the side the road in the pouring rain is Michael Ignatieff’s current attempt to make people turn away from Alexandre Bilodeau so we can listen to more whining about prorogation.

Welcome to February 15, 2010, Mr.Ignateff. It isn’t January anymore, and those Facebook members of the group Canadians against Proroguing Parliament are all currently tuned in to watch Figure skating pairs on television. [I should probably clarify that their wives are making them do this.]

It's too bad in some ways as MI is actually a pretty smart guy ( aside fromthe whole liberal party thing - what's that about?).

It's a pity that smart and "good politician/ good political nous" much less "statesman" don't necessarily overlap.

Long may he reign.

You know he'll be campaigning on the evil soldiers and the green tax.

I wonder if Dalton will experience the same media outrage now that he has prorogued the provincial legislature.

That has got to qualify for funniest rhetorical question of the year.
Errr....it was rhetorical,wasn't it ,pete?

Pitty.

I think the solution to Iggy's problem is pretty obvious: demand euthanizing all Canadian non-gold-medalist competitors. A win-win.

Just think of the media outrage when parliament is prorogued once the opposition forces an election.

Sounds of crickets chirping.

If Iggy is really seeking attention there is an opening on the Georgian Luge Team.

It must really pain a narcissist like Iffy to meet and greet the hoi poloi in an attempt to gain some recognition.

I'd like to tell MI something. Doesn't he realize that when he keeps calling Harper evil/mean-spirited/etc. that he's making the same insults to those who voted for Harper? Does he think that he's going to win our votes by telling us that we're evil and mean-spirited?

Mighty sensitive of you, Joe.

One of the shrewder things Stephen Harper has done
was to prorogue parliament during the Olympic Games.
Canadians' attention will be rivetted on the Games
if all goes well. If a security problem
arises, and we hope that it will not, it is certainly the highest priority for Cabinet
to address that problem.

Again, the senior Cabinet members are needed in Vancouver for meeting and greeting foreign dignitaries.

For these reasons, prorogation was a sensible and reasonable thing to do.

As it happened prorogation worked out well for the Haitian relief work.

Michael Ignatieff has done himself and his party
no good by his noise-making about prorogation
(a perfectly normal parliamentary manoeuvre) and
everything else. He is intelligent but does seem
to lack political acumen, a lack which
characterised the later Romanovs.

Let us hope for his sake that there is no cellar
in Yekaterinburg awaiting him.

You know SYF if we all did nothing but walk around with our solemn solemnity bemoaning the frailty of our humanity and the cruelty of an uncaring universe we would all be Liberals.

A young man died doing what he loved yet scared him to death. Shall I mourn for him for his failure or acknowledge his bravery. Were it that we were all so brave. I simply exalt his daring by pointing out to the vain little would be leader of this great nation the opportunity to take the fallen man's place.

Shifty iffy looks like a crook lurking around the Olympics in all the wrong places - why doesn't he wipe the pained look off his mug and have a good time? He looks like someone put kitty litter in his cornflakes.

What Mr. Ignatieff needs is to find a parade somewhere and get in front of it, you know, like that parade of brown folks who got stuck on that bridge in Toronto last year.

I'm sure they're grateful to this day that he helped them off of that bridge.

I thoought he was going to spend his time "working" in Parliament during prorogation and here he is at the Vancouver Olympics while Stephen Harper is checking out the Canadian effort in Haiti. Enough said.

He'll need a name tag. Most people milling around the Olympic venues won't have a clue who he is. That's just fine, because it's not like he has a clue about much himself anyways.

How does one go about trying to upstage Alexandre Bilodeau? Hello! Gold medal winner!
Ignatieff is a big-mouth.

Chretien's here for the Olympic free lunch as well, seems that Liberal politicians have radar for these events ... no trough unsnouted, so to speak.

Love the sport, but I am not much of a fan of the show.

the brits have jumped on the 'Canadians-are-rotten-hosts' bandwagon for our announced intentions to 'own the podium', plus the hoopla over our first winter gold finally. google it.

I thought that's what it was all about .....

jema: the kitty litter was used. LOL !!!

ONLY two gold medals?

It must be that evil Stephen Harper's fault. If only Mike Ignattieff - ooh, wait, it would have been Stephane Dion, right? - we'd have way more medals. Lousy Conservatives. Bam the dog.

And as the pollsters of the MSM produce yet another "The Evil Tories ...are still ahead!" Headline .... the shills are left scratching their heads and wondering what the he!! is going on.

Too difficult for them to understand that they are backing losers and cretins of the lowest sort.

And BTW ...just how long is it going to take you to realize that nobody gives a crap about "prorogue" except those idjitsof the left and the bootlicker media?

CG - "...the brits have jumped on the 'Canadians-are-rotten-hosts' bandwagon for our announced intentions to 'own the podium', plus the hoopla over our first winter gold finally. google it.

Well, if you're a typically uncouth rustic Canuck, it is.

Just substitute American for Canadian in your excerpted post to help you imagine how it sounds to the rest of the world.

Now be fair folks. Iggy is quite prepared to support the government if they do what he wants. He has offered aid for day care, prorogation and EI reforms. Without friends like that an unproductive agenda would be just that. Thanks Ig. He hasn't offered advice on how to avoid debt and pay the bills but that is above his pay grade.

What? Like when he wanted a stimulus package and then whined to the media because the spending put us in the hole??

that's lieberal politicing don't cha kno???

Stick.. You got it. It must be nice to be the leader of a Party where your base has the attention span of a gnat.

Only slight OT...but I'm too tire to wait for Readers Tips:

Could the CPC be slashing the beaurocracy in Ottawa?
Layoffs at NRC.
It's a start.

Iggy at the Olympics reminds me of a similar event that occurred to me in 1982.

I was at the 1982 MLB All-Star game in Montreal, after the game was over I was sitting against a wall in the concourse waiting for the rest of group I was with to meet up while the rest of the 60K plus fans streamed by. In the midst of the throng was Claude Ryan, leader of the Liberal Party of Quebec, along with a handler. Ryan and the handler came over to me, shook my hand and started speaking to me en francais, about the game and asking how I voted in the prior election. I replied in English that I was visiting from another province and therefore didn't vote. It was obvious Ryan looked and acted uncomfortable in the environment he was in.

Ryan was frequently criticized as being too old, pious and intellectual to lead Quebec. And that is exactly what Iggy is today.

“Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.”

I seem to recall that when it was announced that PMSH was going to make a donation to cover the cost of his tickets to various venues that Iggy said that he was going to use his tickets and wasn't going to politicize the Olympics. So much for that!

The media also reported that government members had purchased far more tickets than the Libs and Dippers. Later it was mentioned that MPs were going as guests of sponsors.Wonder who these MPs would be?

John Lewis @ 3:48, could the Boob be setting up a chair facing backwards in the walk in basement in Yekaterinburg?

blueteck, hope you are right and it is about time.

there is only one Iggy at the olympics.

Hat Trick Iginla!!!!!!

Wonder if Ignatieff were to attend a Canadian hockey game, could he be so self-absorbed as to think that if the fans started to chant "IGGY", he just might possibly think the west coast populace were cheering him?...nahhhhhh!!!!

Im afraid while PMSH has written a book on hockey, this Iggy (M.I.) would still be sitting in the stands waiting for the fourth period.

"And as the pollsters of the MSM produce yet another "The Evil Tories ...are still ahead!"

Yes. But just barely. One has to wonder just who is being polled. The Liberals have an inept, elitist clown at the helm with all the charisma of yesterday's tuna helper. The LPC has nothing to show for its years in power other than failed social programs, an emasculated military and a plundered treasury.

On the other hand, the Conservatives have a strong, well-respected leader and are, to this point, steering the country through some rough economic times.

Yet the polls remain too close for comfort. I strongly suspect that the polls are wildly inaccurate. The alternative is too frightening to contemplate.

biff...I strongly suggest the people being polled are not getting their info here, but let MSM tell them what to think.
