... a light comes on:
Addressing the Tea Party, Sarah Palin wrote three notes on her hand: "Energy, Taxes, Lift American Spirits." Why? She already had notes in front of her on the podium. Surely she could remember three simple themes. Why write notes on her hand?... keep reading Huffpo. Here's my take on why: she knew that they would be visible when she gave the speech. And she knew that she would be made fun of -- as so stupid that she needs to write notes on her hand. And that's one of her most effective tactics -- to be made fun of. It's an integral part of her strategy of standing in for hardworking, Middle Americans, derided by the condescending, know-it-all liberal elites.

I bet she had crib notes / speech highlight cards for four or five topics with her on the podium. They told her beforehand you have X minutes for your speech, and so she quickly selected three from her possible choices and wrote them on her hand. She then changed her mind on one of them at the last second, crossed it out, and wrote in another topic.
There was no devious preplanning on her part that the handwriting would be seen. As one who writes on his hand, you don't guard against people seeing it, you just carry on normally.
You'd want to be careful with those themes.
"Energy taxes lift American spirits" is pretty much Obama's theme.
She must have gotten a heads up, just before going on stage, that one of the questions in the Q&A session after her speech would ask her to list three things she can offer or whatever.
A little subterfuge, but likely it was Judson clueing her in and not an active conspiracy to fake the Q&A.
I only read the first page of comments at Huffpo, but is them progressives ever p*ssed at the thought they might not be as smart as they've been told they am!
The Gibbs mockery is a classic example. He played perfectly with Palin's ploy.
This is now just too sad and funny at the same time. Even for SDA.
She wrote down her three fundamental priorities because she's so much smarter than the rest of us????? From my experience, "hardworking, Middle Americans" don't need a cheat sheet or crib notes to remind them what is important in life. What was on her other hand? The word "right"?
Please. She made a boneheaded mistake. She is still learning how to ad lib properly. She spent 45 minutes reading from an old fashioned telepromter (i.e. a written speach) from which she barely looked up, and then was given pre-scripted questions, and she still needed to remind herself what her three top fundamental priorities for fixing America are.
Social conservatives make a big mistake if they start equating Sarah Palin - or any one individual frankly - with social conservativism or an attack on one ambitious politician for an attack on an ideology.
Do not make an idol of this woman. She is a walking talking point and even then she needs crib notes.
I,m not from the USA,but i have a feeling the scum are running scared from this brilliant woman.Picking on her family, her state and the way she dresses etc.She is just too good for them and the arse hole on late night, whats his name Letterman the idiot.Go Sarah Go you have more brains than them and they have no balls other than funny ones that can only make other women laugh at them.Remember that idiots try to bring other people down to their scum bag level, because they are lonely people.
I think there was nothing premeditated about the handwritting. The 'progressives' are just psyching themselves out with this explaination - their mockery is something they just can't help and it will be their undoing.

"Barack Obama Breaks Poor Paul Krugman’s Heart
Although he was one of Barack Obama’s most fervent supporters two years ago, New York Times columnist and blogger Paul Krugman seems to have lost his faith in the president’s ability to “radically transform” America. Put differently, the Nobel Prize winning economist’s heart is broken:
"I’m with Simon Johnson here: how is it possible, at this late date, for Obama to be this clueless?
"The lead story on Bloomberg right now contains excerpts from an interview with Business Week which tells us:
"President Barack Obama said he doesn’t “begrudge” the $17 million bonus awarded to JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon or the $9 million issued to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. CEO Lloyd Blankfein, noting that some athletes take home more pay…

This is known as the 'handwriting on the hand' when you don't have a wall that is handy.
In the old days the 'handwriting on the wall' was a portent of doom:
MENE, God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end; TEKEL, you have been weighed on the scales and found wanting; PERES, your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.
Why that would be an Obama-Nation(tm)...would it not?
"The Run Upon The Bankers" by Jonathan Swift:
A baited banker thus desponds,
From his own hand foresees his fall,
They have his soul, who have his bonds;
'Tis like the writing on the wall.
harks back to the Book Of Daniel:
Mene, Mene, Tekel u-Pharsin.
Which is a pretty good allegory of what is presently happening in the USA...
The cure to which Sarah writes:
"Energy, Taxes, Lift American Spirits."
I thought that was pretty clever...

wot a narrow world U live in
in yer world ever one thinks and reacts as U do
tell U wot, some people with very high IQ's need to do exactly wot Sarah did, one that comes to mind would be S Hawking, cuz he don't think like U do, the brilliant Hawking is dyslexic, and would have difficulty remebering thinks "just" when he wanted to recall them
and as to Sarah and her popularity, it's driven to a large degree by the lefties hate for her
Right you are Smith.
A persons imagination will almost always create a much worse picture than reality when it comes to punishments for example.
I'm quite giddy about how something so simple as a note on a hand can create such a stir.
I believe it's Sarah Palin's very existence that bothers her critics, the rest is grey noise.
A light comes on?
Come on!
"Her brilliance is her ability to tap in to the class conflicts that drive American politics these days."
"But there are millions and millions of Americans ... They work hard their whole lives, and they feel left out, disrespected, undervalued -- treated as if they are stupid."
This is the "cling to guns and religion" meme expressed by those whose identity is bound up in the attempt to impose a lesser status on others in order to make themselves look and feel better.
Oh, this just gets better and weirder and more desperate.
So not only were all of her many flubs and embarrassments all the fault of the media and John McCain during the election.
Not only was her bailing on her responsibilities as governor a savy political move and not an escape from incompetence and tax evasion and corruption charges.
Not only was her multiple tax cheating a political statement against paying too much taxes.
not only is reading from a written speach somehow a paen to working class America instead of the teleprompter she's been reading from before teleprompting became such a critical issue of national importance.
Not only has she outsmarted everyone with her cheat notes on her 3 fundamental priorities (which needed a re-do to boot) because what it really was about was showing her kinship with ordinary working Americans and mocking Obama, and not because she can't speak without notes.
But now Palin gets compared to Stephen Hawking?????
Keep it coming. Keep it coming. I'm enjoying this.
"HI MOM"
My take is such Palin haters as "No Idols No Idol Worship" are terminally inflicted with PDS.
That Huffpo article was interesting......and to me indicates a quantum shift in the lefty realm as far as attack tactics towards Palin.
'No Idols No Idol Worship' didn't get the memo.
They realize that portraying her as dim, inexperienced and unqualified makes them look like the idiots that they and their messiah are.
The new ploy is to discredit Palin as cunning and devious....
As Joan Williams was intelligent enough to realize,......Palin now has the lefties streaming her 3 priorities for her. Now that is wagging the lefty dog.
Meanwhile they realize they can't lay a hand on Palin scandal wise.
The irony is that the Dems have during recent times figured out how to nominate the Republican Nominees....but inadvertantly have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams....and created their own worst nightmare.
I especially enjoyed some of the condescending posts......made by people who elected Joe Biden VP.
"Progressives" aren't progressive but that's a topic for another time.
So she wrote on her hand. So what? She delivered a speech to enthusiastic grassroots activists that was spot-on. Maybe not a pretty win but it's worth it.
Moving on, already...
Problem is sasquatch, I don't hate Palin. I have no reason to hate her. I just don't think she is very bright and I certainly don't think she is capable of being a good president. There is nothing wrong with that. Most Americans wouldn't either. Most Americans are not intelligent enough or competent enough or capable enough of being the leader of the free world. That is hardly an insult even.
I am just baffled at how fervently and, well, religiously she gets defended despite all of the evidence just because she seems like a pure holder of all the litmus test social conservative/evangelical beliefs and the lengths to which she will actually be elevated in such defences.
As I noted above, there is a complete conflation of Palin/Social Conservativism, the individual with the ideology where a criticism of her is considered a criticism of all the far-right stuff she believes in. Sasquatch has proven that point for me.
I personally think it is great because, unlike someone like Reagan or Gingrich, she really is a lightweight and can't go beyond the dogmatic talking points. So if she is everything that social conservativism is and has become? I think that that is great for moderates and reasonable people of whatever stripe or belief.
At least she needed only 3 hand written notes to give her largely off the cuff speech.
Obama used a teleprompter to give a talk to a grade 6 class.
Never hear the MSM report on that.
RL: At least she needed only 3 hand written notes to give her largely off the cuff speech.
Obama used a teleprompter to give a talk to a grade 6 class.
Never hear the MSM report on that.
You never hear it because it isn't true, RL.
She read for 45 minutes from a pre-written speech. She needed the handwritten cheat notes to remind her what her top 3 priorities for fixing America are in the post-speech scripted "interview".
Sheeesh. Do please keep up.
No Idols but him/herself wrote:

I guess moderation is the new name for conformism, that is when any political theory and politics as strategy should conform to few simple assumptions. If so called "free world" is filled with intelligent and competent leaders....and their finance ministers then how in the hell got itself in the economic mess that is going underway?
I
Clue bat time: It's not whether or not Palin is smart, stupid, brilliant, or just average; it's that by savaging her, the progressive class utterly and completely destroys any chance of winning back public trust. Palin/tea parties are viewed favorably by 75% of independants ... you savage Palin, you destroy your chances Novemeber 2010.
President Obama did use a teleprompter at a committee meeting of maybe 15 people. How pathetic is that. What I want to know is who is the guy writing the speeches for the teleprompter. That guy is the true power / puppet master.

no idols/philboy - could you provide your data base to substantiate your opinion that 'Most Americans are not intelligent enough or competent enough or capable enough of being the leader of the free world".
What are the quantitative definitions of 'most', 'intelligent', 'competent' and 'capable'? If you consider that 'most' are not qualified for leadership, then could you explain how such a leader ought to be chosen?
Also could you explain why you merge 'conservative' and 'evangelical'. Please define both terms and explain why you merge them.
And why beliefs in limited government, low taxes, a free market economy based around private enterprise, defense of the nation, and constitutional adherence are 'far-right' attributes? These are the basic themes of the conservative movement.Oh, and are these 'dogmatic talking points'?
And please justify your claim that Palin was engaged in 'tax evasion', corruption and so on. Otherwise, you are engaged in libel - and any ignoramus can do that. Are you an ignoramus?
Do you consider that Obama is intelligent, competent and capable? If so, please explain.
And, what are his beliefs? Are they far-left?
By the way, Palin did not read for 45 minutes. Her handful of pages could not function as a word-for-word text, and such a word-for-word reading would have required her to actually read the pages. Instead, as was obvious from watching her, she used the pages as key concepts and spoke freely to the audience about those concepts.
Could you provide evidence that she 'barely looked up' from her speech? The televised evidence is the opposite, so I wonder what your evidence is that you would make such an assertion.
And, a key word card - with those six key words on it, whether on paper or on hand, is not 'cheat notes'. I'm sure you know what cheating involves. How can the word 'energy' be consider an act of cheating? It's a key word and has no informational content.
phil/no idol - your problem is that you simply state a long, long list of your beliefs and opinions but none of them are based on any facts, any empirical data, any actual evidence. It's just you talking, talking. I know that you've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast but we here prefer to live in the real not fictional world. Therefore, what evidence do you have for your talk, talk, talk?
no idol/phil - you state "Most Americans are not intelligent enough or competent enough or capable enough of being the leader of the free world".
Please provide evidence for your opinion. If you believe this then how does America find its leadership?
No, Palin didn't read her speech word for word. That was obvious from watching her give it, for she looked down at her notes only briefly and spent most of the time talking in full eye contact with the audience.
Could you provide evidence that the Wallace questions were prescripted? And could you explain that she was able to deal with his follow up questions, which were quite pointed, without notes?
Could you explain why you merge social conservativism and evangelicalism?
Palin was promoting conservativism; I don't recall her using the phrase 'social conservativism' so I'm puzzled by your use of it. Conservativism as explained by Palin and others is about limited govt, low taxes, free market private enterprise, strong national defense. Why do you consider these far-right?
Do you consider Obama far-left?
Oh, and please provide evidence for your claim of her corruption, tax evasion etc. I think that such claims require evidence, don't you?
I just love Sarah Palin,
she makes the progressives expose themselves
for the intolerant snobs that they are.
No Idols, you really make yourself look like a thoughless partisan ass with those 'observations' of yours.
Tell you what, No Idols, why don't you tell us Palin's political resume and tell us why she is not qualified for political leadership.
Come on, you must know her political history by heart, as you seem to think it is so shallow.
"Tell you what, No Idols, why don't you tell us Palin's political resume and tell us why she is not qualified for political leadership."
If I may be allowed to answer for NI; Palin isn't qualified to be a leader because she was only a Mayor and a Governor in the State of Alaska, not a community organizer, like some great politicians we all know and love!
I mean, if you can't organize a community, how can you organize a Nation?!
Sheesh,thought that was obvious.
The funny thing about the Williams article is that she believes that Obama "worked his way up" and "believes in the American Dream?!" Are you kidding me? Wow that is a whopper...Obama is the ultimate empty suit packaged and served up by the Chicago Machine and leftist elitists and the guy is not only not wise he is not even smart!
"Corpseman." Hee hee hee
Yup, the author of the article almost got it, except
for that nonsense about Barack Obama. Sarah Palin is
brilliant, and she has a marvellous rapport with
much of the electorate.
As to why she wrote notes on her hand, it's anybody's guess. Probably mostly to keep her
mind on the main topics of her talk, as a
backup in case she lost her notes or lost her
place in them; but she did wave her hand
around, so the notion that she wanted to
trap the lefties may also be true.
"there's method to [her] madness"
see why I like Shakespeare so much? by gawd he covered a lot of territory.
Dr Hawkings dyslexic? how can you tell? the audio synthesizer comes out backwards?
here's some more spin for ya boys: Palin is desperate for something, anything different. hoping the fawning crowd will rise up in unison and fill in the blanks.
gotta start somewhere you betcha.
Could you provide evidence that the Wallace questions were prescripted?
ET, you must be the last wingnut in conservative retardistan not to understand that nobody is talking about the Wallace interview, that
the Wallace interview has nothing to do with Palin's I-quit palm pilot cheat notes,
that the Wallace interview the next day revealed a whole other dimension of Palin's idiocy and ineptitude.
She could have drawn a teleprompter on her palm to be obvious but that may not have played well in all 57 states. What she did was nicely sucker the MSM into jumping at a lure that in most real peoples thinking turned into a thumb in Big "O's" eye.
I guess Palin does not understand satire and she complains about telaprompters, but does this hand jive, what a hypocrite. I have not seen this since junior high. She is so perfect for “Fake News”, so much for being a private citizen. I guess Palin failed to watch President Obama answer questions at the GOP retreat in Baltimore, no teleprompters or crib notes on the hand. But I guess those facts would only blow her poor little Beauty Queen from smallville mind, who could not finish her highest office that she ever held, quit making excuses for her! WOW and some call her a leader…….please.
My first take on this is that it was done on purpose to mock someone's very frequent use of the teleprompter.
Well done.
Heh. I am no fan of Obama, but it would sure be fun to watch her try to take unscripted questions from three Democrats on national television. That took some guts I will give Ol' Big Ears that.
Cheats on her taxes. Cheats on her pre-scripted interview. Blames everyone else for her slip ups.
I guess that last part is the funny thing. If she had it more together and if her supporters weren't so blindly rabid in their support and conflating her with the social conservative ideology (such that a criticism of her = an attack on conservativism), then they'd laugh off her many mistakes and amateur moments like needing cheat notes to reminder herself what her three most fundamental priorities are.
I remember Reagan slipping up lots of times when he was learning the ropes and Kennedy too (clips). They'd always laugh at themselves louder than anyone else in the room. Chalk it up to a learning experience and earn respect for it, even from detractors. Bur for Palin their is only blind unquestioning devotion to her perfection with no criticism allowed.
Criticizing Palin as being a bad choice for president and being unqualified is in no way a criticism of conservativism and the far right undermines itself by taking that position. So I strongly encourage you to keep at it.
yoo hoo - phil, oh, err..no idols, you haven't answered any, not a single one of my requests for your to substantiate your accusations and to define your terms.
Does that mean that you are all talk and no meat? Just like Obama, who says one thing to one audience and the opposite to another audience, which renders his words random and meaningless.
ET - I have no intention of answering any of your inanities. If you aren't aware of the many tax troubles Palin is in, then there really is no sense in wasting my time with you if you don't know how to even use google.
If you think every American is capable and qualified to be President of the United States or that saying not everyone is capable or qualified to be President of the United States is incorrect, then you really are a dimwit not worth wasting any more of my time over.
milton - the problem with Obama's answering of questions to the GOP was that the answers were totally empty. They were pure rhetoric with misinformation and manipulation and, because the WH had insisted that no follow up questions were allowed, then Obama couldn't be confronted with his lies and misinformation.
Got that? So, his 10 minute pontifications in answer to questions were meaningless, because he wasn't telling the truth! Anyone can spout nonsense if they are assured that no-one will confront them and insist that data and logic be applied.
He actually said that his health care bill was centrist! And stated that he was against lobbyists but there are over 40 in his administration; he assured them that he had read their submissions - so what - the point is to explain why he was rejecting them..on and on.
The fact that you consider that someone talking empty nonsense is something to be admired says a great deal about your values.
heh - phil or no idol is behaving exactly like a leftist.
When you confront such a person about their lack of evidence to support their specious and empty opinions, they don't supply the data and analysis. Why not? Because their opinions are just that, empty personal opinions and can't be substantiated.
So their tactic to get out of the responsibility of being accountable for their vapid opinions is always the same. Attack the dissenter. The Obama gang do that. It's a typical reaction of the left.
yoo hoo, phil, no idol. I didn't ask only about taxes. There were other questions as well. Hmm? You can't substantiate your opinions?
Oh, and your switching of your 'most Americans are not qualified' to saying that such a statement is equivalent to 'All/No' is logically invalid. I suggest you take a quick look at the square of opposition. So, again, how about answering my question?
Democrats & Progressives spent years calling G.W. Bush stupid. Notice where they did this from -- the opposition benches. Bush laughed all the way to the White House. Twice.
Now Democrats & Progressive are spending years calling Palin stupid. Don't be surprised if she ends up in the White House.
What's that old phrase? "Never underestimate your enemy"? Hmm.....
ET, I have no problem answering questions and entering into a dialog or discussion with people who are interested in a dialog or discussion. I can tell from your nonsense and inanities and plain silliness that you are not.
But you do make me laugh. Especially the part about it being a characteristic of the left to attack the messenger instead of the message. To say it is a characteristic of the left after 8 years of Bush and on a day when the Canadian PMO went on a raging personal attack on the head of one of biggest and most successful banks because he disagrees with Harper on policy, or after reading any comments here at SDA on any day.... is really delusional.
I don't feel any compunction to answer questions from a delusional person.
"Please. She made a boneheaded mistake. She is still learning how to ad lib properly. She spent 45 minutes reading from an old fashioned telepromter (i.e. a written speach) from which she barely looked up, and then was given pre-scripted questions, and she still needed to remind herself what her three top fundamental priorities for fixing America are."
Ad libbing? Are you kidding me. When her teleprompter malfunctioned at her acceptance speech for VP she brought the house down with the "lipdstick" one liner. And her popularity has continued to soar ever since.
When O's telepromter quits-which is often- he has to wait for it to reset until he can continue. I watched a campaign q&a session where, without his teleprompter, he was not able to coherently answer a simple question about health care costs. He mumbled and stumbled and continually went to "reset". He was like" okay, lets start again" and "ok, its fine now". Obama does a damn fine job of READING A speech. Thinking, or doing, or leading--not so much.
He can't even talk to grade 6 students without his teleprompter.
As someone said recently about liberals(in particular "O") she is living in their head "rent free".
I, for one, love it!!
Horny toad
Rocky says....
Aaayy, we done dis areaddy.
Dat Paulin broad is doin jest fine.
How on earth does Obama's competence have anything to do with whether Palin is competent???
The fact that Obama is an incompetent airbag doesn't make Palin suddenly competent and capable of being a good president.
In fact, if anything, Obama proves quite definitively that proven governing and leadership experience is a job requirement for probably the single most important and difficult job in the entire world.
And Palin doesn't have it. She has more governing experience than Obama did a year ago, but just barely and certainly not enough.
She has poise and a lot of good wisecracking (sorry, wisecrackin') lines and she has good presence when she is not dealing with serious or complicated stuff. In other words, she's a good celebrity activist like those nitwits from Hollywood trying to save the world. She's can't even hold her own at Fox.
But that is not the stuff of Presidents. Whoa be to the world if she ever became Prez - and the least of our concerns would be her political ideology.
No Idols, I'm beginning to get the impression that you don't think Sarah Palin is very bright. Or am I reading you wrong?
But tell us, do you think she'd make a good President?
Milton @9:57 - I think "Faux News" is what you were going for there, Milt. It's a pun, you see. (You wouldn't happen to be a Beauty Queen by any chance, would you?)
The important question is, were the notes still readable a day later? I'd hate to think someone who shakes that many hands, doesn't wash properly. It could spark a pandemic.
This was never news worthy. She wrote on her hand. All it proves is that she's self-reliant, and wants to get things right. Not exactly bad qualities in a leader.
Phil/No Idols
Governing is more than saying 'present'.................and on that note, Palin has far more experience in senior office, than the Empty Suit, at this time in their respective careers.
The suit was never mayor, nor a state Governor.
But he was present, apparently, in Congress......
He may have been a good poster boy, but, as we are all quickly finding out (and most of us here saw right thru it long ago, for that matter), he\s going down in flames fast........One and out for The One!
