... and hoping the proles don't remember:
Three big companies quit an influential lobbying group that had focused on shaping climate-change legislation, in the latest sign that support for an ambitious bill is melting away.Oil giants BP PLC and ConocoPhillips and heavy-equipment maker Caterpillar Inc. said Tuesday they won't renew their membership in the three-year-old U.S. Climate Action Partnership, a broad business-environmental coalition that had been instrumental in building support in Washington for capping emissions of greenhouse gases.
The move comes as debate over climate change intensifies and concerns mount about the cost of capping greenhouse-gas emissions.
... feel free to put your global-warming-all-hell-breaking-loose news in the comments ... it's getting hard to keep track of all the death spasms.

One nail at a time...that's how coffin lids are closed!
"Slithering Away... and hoping the proles don't remember:"
Come on now that's unfair, the writing seemed to be on the wall and they figured this was cheap insurance to try to protect their businesses a little and perhaps influence timing and degree.
Now I would have prefered to seem them ALSO put up some bucks at arms length to do some skeptical analysis mongering. Which they did very little of as far as I can tell, but then the science was settled right?
Like a medieval /renaissance civil war it's always valuable to have family members on both sides of the war, you never know how these things will turn out.

The administration had worked hard to persuade industry groups to climb aboard its major legislative initiatives—a tack many business interests saw as sensible following the Democrats' big gains in the 2008 elections. But "unlikely bedfellows make for breakups," said Kevin Book, managing director of Clearview Energy Partners, a consulting firm.
Spokesmen for ConocoPhillips and BP said the companies still support legislation to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, but believe they can accomplish more working outside USCAP's umbrella. Caterpillar said it plans to focus on commercializing green technologies.

Hey, what's going on?
I though it was the oil companies that were funding the deniers.
Hmmm. Another lie exposed.
dizzy: You are so politically disfunctional ... of course they'd say that.
UPDATE 1-Texas to challenge US greenhouse gas rules
(Via Drudge)
" Texas said it had filed a petition for review challenging the EPA's "endangerment finding" with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Texas has also asked the EPA to reconsider its ruling.
"The EPA's misguided plan paints a big target on the backs of Texas agriculture and energy producers and the hundreds of thousands of Texans they employ," Texas Gov. Rick Perry said.
The National Association of Manufacturers, the American Petroleum Institute, and the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association also said on Tuesday they filed a petition challenging the EPA in federal appeals court.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and U.S. iron and steel makers have also signaled they would file lawsuits."

Yes there are death spasms, but so far no prominent politician will acknowledge them. How long do we have to play these stupid games?
When will Harper step up and announce a public inquiry into the AGW fraud?
When will Harper step up and announce a public inquiry into the AGW fraud?
Slim @ 12:42 asked "When will Harper step up and announce a public inquiry into the AGW fraud?"
I do not think it will be anytime soon as there appears to be some Kool-aid dribbling from his and Minister Prentice's chins. I found the following article in the Globe and Mail late last evening. It talks about Prentice announcing the the government will purchase $150,000 in carbon offsets to negate the Olympic emissions.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/blogs/bureau-blog/ottawa-to-offset-olympic-emissions/article1469956/
I also intend to register my displeasure with my Conservative MPP.
The CPC moved to talk-up AGW because the public wanted it.
They will talk it down when the public changes its mind on AGW.
Be assured that the CPC leadership thinks AGW is what it is - an attempt at global governance.
But like all wars, living to fight on ground upon which you can be victorious is paramount. The war against enviro-socialism will not be won by having the CPC commit Kamakazi-style political blunders like rejecting AGW theory before the public agrees with it.
Further to Texas: The Arizona Gov't has a Bill moving that will exempt Arizona from EPA regulation, death to the dragon… The Lawyers will love having the Green Sleaze in a jurisdiction other than the 9th.. One small step to evidence of racketeering
Gord @ 1:24, would that you are right. I mentioned above that I would send an email to my MPP. Well, I did and was reading it to my wife when I got a phone call from the Conservative Party donation solicitors. Talk about perfect timing. I unloaded and he assured me that my "message" would be passed up the ladder.
Is it just because of PMSH's government minority status that there is a reluctance to confront the fraud or have some of Joe Clarke's buddies taken control of the party again?
Corporations are essentially whores. They sell what you will buy. And they all need good publicity in today's climate. The Big Three didn't want to be seen as murdering polar bears and eating kittens, so they tried to get out in front of the AGW bandwagon and reap whatever PR benefits they could.
Big Biz can deal with Big Gov better than small biz can. The former just passes on everything. Small biz gets tangled up in the red tape and overhead. That's one reason Big Biz is selling the Liberals the rope to hang them with.
Now that there is little support for AGW, they can't afford to back it themselves.
Now IPCC hurricane data is questioned !!!

Ken: the former
Also remember that provincial conservatives are not equivalent to federal ones. The CPC as a whole is much further to the right than any provincial "PC" party.
from above:
What a co-incidunk! I just happen to have $150,000 in carbon credits for sale.

"Setting the climate record straight (IPCC co-chair "discusses recent criticisms.")
A co-chair of the IPCC's beleaguered second working group discusses recent criticisms.
Climate researcher Martin Parry at Imperial College London co-chaired the second working group of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) — the group charged with assessing the effects climate change is likely to have and how these might be mitigated — for the IPCC's fourth assessment. During the past month, the IPCC has corrected an error about the amount of melting anticipated for the Himalayan glaciers and defended its estimates of the financial costs of damage caused by natural disasters. Nature talks to Parry, who has been busy juggling...

Why do you think all of these accusations are bubbling up now?
There probably has been something of a sceptical wave regarding climate change, and I think we're possibly caught up in that. Which is unfortunate, because I fear it leads the public to a view that climate science may be less reliable than it really is.
I think the IPCC should be open to any scrutiny and should respond by clarifying any queries. Now, that clarification can take time. Science can't shoot from the hip, and it's not about making statements to meet 24-hour news time lines.
There has been some criticism of the IPCC, and of Chairman Rajendra Pachauri in particular, for the way in which the affair has been handled.
The IPCC is not like a political party with a manifesto that it's preaching and a rapid-rebuttal office. But the IPCC will need to decide whether it is in the business of simply undertaking its five-year assessments or being the source of information and being able to respond, on an ongoing basis, to enquiries.
And Pachauri?
Yes, I certainly have confidence in Dr Pachauri as chairman of the IPCC, and in the IPCC itself."

"Xerox, Marsh Also Out Of USCAP Climate Alliance
Looks like there’s a stampede to exit the United States Climate Action Partnership. Copier king Xerox (XRX) and insurance broker Marsh (MMC) apparently are no longer in the business-green alliance supporting cap-and-trade legislation, or so says Tom Borelli, director of the National Center for Public Policy Research’s Free Enterprise Project. On Tuesday, energy giants BP (BP) and ConocoPhillips (COP), along with heavy equipment maker Caterpillar (CAT), said they were leaving the group.
