Nothing divides the NDP like the Israel-Palestine conflict. It's rare to find a New Democrat too busy to talk to the media, but deputy leaders Libby Davies and Thomas Mulcair were strangely unavailable today when asked to talk about the party's policy on the Middle East.
[...]
It is for this reason that a party activist called Matt Godwin has launched a group called Progressive Caucus for Peace to offer a more balanced, moderate voice on the Middle East. Mr. Godwin said he was appalled by the 2006 resolution and the treatment of Jews by many on the left. "The issue has become poisonous, so this network was started to bring together dedicated social democrats ... and counter extremist views that paint Israel as an apartheid state," he said.
The aim is not to change official party policy, which supports a two-state solution and has been worded so as not to cause any offense. Rather the new group is attempting to change the climate in a party where it has become fashionable to don a Palestinian scarves and spew hatred that would be deemed unacceptable in any other context.
Good luck with that, Mr Godwin. It's not "fashion" - it's who they are.
h/t Trent.
Update: Speaking of which....

It is for this reason that a party activist called Matt Godwin ...

I would like to invoke Godwin's Law as the first comment.
Next up - NDP sues own activist for using term 'Progressive' for an unapproved purpose.
Thus the NDP is a contraction for the Newly Divided Party...

I have always enjoyed flying the national flag of countries I admire. Stars and Stripes on Memorial Day and July 4th, Union Jack on Victoria day and
Dominion Day etc. etc. I also have an Israeli flag that I fly on Israel Independence Day
and other days as well to show my support for them.
Being new to the neighbourhood, I have been asked if we are Jewish. I say no. They always want to know why then we fly the flag. My answer is that this family supports Israel.
A few of the neighbours were a bit cool toward us after finding that out. Those neighbours aren't worth knowing.
Neither is the NDP.
To recap: Hamas sees women as property. Hamas sees homosexuality as a capital crime. Hamas sees murdering "some women" as justifiable. Hamas sees murdering "some children" as justifiable. The NDP supports Hamas as a legitimate political party. The NDP has no trouble whatsoever with the 56 Muslim states governed or directed, in whole or in part, by theocratic geniuses who think the world is flat and that the sun dips into a pool of water each night. The NDP never protests against male dominated Muslim countries in which women are chattel. It would never dawn on the NDP to stamp their Birkenstocked little hooves to protest the muslim perpetrated genocide in Sudan which they apparently see as an administrative matter that needs a bit of tweaking. The NDP sees a Jewish state as an apartheid abomination whose Nobel laureates should be banned from sharing their knowledge with Canadian students. Therefore, Harper is a homophobic, misogynistic racist baby-killer.

That's a good idea atric. I personally fly the Canadian Red Ensign through the summer, starting near the end of June every year (and have also had it up these past two weeks for the Olympics). I also fly the Stars and Stripes on July 4th and September 11th each year. But, it never occurred to me to fly the Israeli flag on their special day.
I will be remedying that oversight post haste.
On topic -- this fellow would likely be more productive by bashing his head against a brick wall that with his chosen endeavor. Kate is quite right when she says "it's who they are" and no amount of gentle attempts to convince otherwise will bear much, if any, fruit.
Look, the left is fundamentally rooted in victim ideology. It's no accident that Israel was a darling of the left in her early days post independence in 1948, when she was the underdog surrounded by Arab aggressors.
However, as Israel grew to dominate the region militarily, politically and economically, it was inevitable that Western liberals would turn against her. Israel is no longer the victim in the eyes of the left, however perverse that point of view seems.
Great links.
What EYS said.

Actually it was a policy directive from the Kremlin.
What happened to my post?
It was on topic and it was deleted.
I'm not surprised. Leftists would rather eat a bowl of wax than not defend Islamofascists.

I agree.
But it is also "who they are" to believe they can educate others in order to bring them to adopt their position.
(despite most of the truths held by Leftist being based on feelings rather than facts)
This fellow and his cohorts will attempt to win the scarf wearers to their position and fail.
And in the failing Matt Godwin and his pals just might move to a more centrist political position.
(this is essentially a repost of the one deleted earlier but I don't think it was as succinct)
Colin from Mission B.C.: "Look, the left is fundamentally rooted in victim ideology."
That's where the money is. The victim ideology is an industry.
When they use German based words, with more than ten letters, I gotta bail out. Thanks a lot Canadian education system :).
