Update: Hi Mom!

More - the secret behind His Eloquence?

I found it hard to believe that Owebambam would use a teleprompter to speak at a grade school. I will double check to be certain that the ink wasn't put on the hand after the speech. (Photoshop)

Notes on the palm work, however in politics, COOL matters, appearances are everything, so a business card would have been the form for prompts.

I didn't watch the speech but one question as one who does a lot of public speaking; Why would you write on your hand instead of putting your notes on paper? A lot of speakers like to use teleprompters but most use the old fashioned notes on the podium. Really you can't put enough notes on your hand to carry your speech and public speaking is not a high school exam where you have to sneak in cheats.

Eh, folks are missing the point here. If all I needed as prompts for a 45 minute speech were 6 words, I'd write them on my hand, too.

The word crossed out looks like 'budget' to me, so Mrs. Palin decided to emphasize tax cuts rather than budget cuts. Regarding writing on one's hand - that has long been done in aviation with callsigns, etc, especially in the confines of a cockpit. If a speaker wants to remember a sequence while looking at the audience and not the podium it's a handy (get it?) idea. I used to give a 1 1/2 lecture with four cue cards; if you know your subject, you don't need a teleprompter. To give a speech with just four points shows competence; I'm impressed.

Yup gotta agree with Kate if you can go out and speak at a major speaking engagement like this one and do it with a few notes on your hand my hats off to you.

The heat of the lights, the terror when speaking in front of crowd that is so focused on every word a laser couldn't get more focused.

Now that is gravitas.

Cues on the hand are a good idea.
A person could drop a card or forget it in the heat of a moment, plus she gets to look at her wedding ring and remember the support she has from the one who truly loves her.

@Joe,

The video of Obama using teleprompters at a grade school was hosted at whitehouse.gov.

Kate wrote, "Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!"

Love it, love it, love it! Kate gives a crisp clean coup de grâce to the bleating liberals.

Looks amateurish.

Using a business card keeps the notes private from the camera and would give her a more statesmanlike demeanor.

re: prompts written on hand.

Callsigns and certain codewords written on the hand can be quickly wiped off if capture in battle was imminent, whereas written notes could be captured.

At Dieppe, a Canadian Officer had a copy of the invasion orders, which included instructions that German prisoners were to be handcuffed. These were captured by the Germans, who promptly started handcuffing Canadian POWs throughout the prison camp system. (Many of the German guards didn't support this, so they would put the cuffs on the Canadians while being watched by the German Officers, but would loosen or even unlock them until the end of the day when the Officers would come back for the cuffs)

I watched the 40 minutes, a few spots could have been tightened up, but...

But what was this? she was asked to speak in front of a friendly crowd, regarding the topic at hand. She did well, and made her points known.
When she spoke of Trig, the applause was sustained, and enjoyed by her. I don't fault her for anything contained in her speech...

The USA needs someone who can think on their feet, they currently do not have that person in charge. B. Hussien loses it, and is not "statesman like" when the teleprompter stops, and the affirmative action starts to show.

I'm impressed. 45 minutes with 6---1 word cues.....amazing.
Aviator:
[.....Regarding writing on one's hand - that has long been done in aviation with callsigns, etc, especially in the confines of a cockpit.]

That's why there is a pad/pen strapped to one thigh and a chart on the other. Check-lists are generally printed.

In my experience, hands get sweaty from time to time.....gloves???

I guess I'm a bit rusty.....must be a new technique........

Sarah Palin's hand cues look like she represents the "common Americans" while Obama's teleprompters look like Barry is in bed with the elites by comparison.

I think the American people are longing for someone who they can really relate to, someone who will listen to them, someone genuine.

Sarah Palin used to work as a commercial fisherman with that hand.
She holds the stock of her rifle steady with that hand.

Kate:

This is somewhat O/T but is related. I noticed a book about Governor Palin several weeks ago at a local bookstore. I thought I would bring it to the attention of SDA readers because it seems from yesterday's thread that few readers are aware of it.

The Persection of Sarah Palin

As the second woman ever nominated as a candidate for vice president, Alaska governor Sarah Palin became an instant phenomenon. Americans were enthralled by a woman with charm, ambition, natural political talent, and a passion for conservative values.

But the fascination of ordinary people quickly drew an unprecedented attack from the media elite and liberal activists. Far beyond the normal bounds of tough questions and challenges, Palin's enemies decided that nothing was too personal to attack-including her marriage, her children, her faith, and her wardrobe. The media distorted Palin's positions and beliefs beyond recognition. And almost every word out of her mouth was spun as a "flub."

Weekly Standard writer Matthew Continetti reveals the true story of the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee and her persecution by the elites who tried to hide their bias with solemn declarations of objectivity. Continetti offers fresh examples of malicious spin and deceit and shows how liberal snobbery has become a driving force in American politics.

Palin's ordeal has become a rallying cry for the GOP in the Obama era. This perceptive book is a must-read for conservatives who want to understand what really happened-and how to avoid a repeat.

"Today's media, more than ever before, hunts in a pack. In these modes it is like a feral beast, just tearing people and reputations to bits. But no one dares miss out."--Tony Blair, June 12, 2007.

I like this one from the Onion. "Obama's Home Teleprompter Malfunctions". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXQTaWjMoFw&NR=1

that would be The Persecution of Sarah Palin

It's hard to see anything wrong with this. I assume there are five or six words there because there are five or six subjects that she wants covered. She can just look at the hand for a quick check to make sure she hasn't missed one of these essential topics. She's been doing a lot of public speaking lately, so she knows what she wants to say about each of them.

Nothing she does is going to please the media. If she speaks extemporaneously (which she is -- a few words on your palm aren't going to get you through a speech if you don't know the material) then they say she's amateurish. If she used a teleprompter like Obama, they'd say she was scripted by handlers.

I guess Mrs. Palin heard about the squawking from the msm (and 'others'); today when she was campaigning with Texas Governor hopeful, Rick Perry, she wrote "Hi Mom" on her palm. Heh.

@Jema 54,

Great comment there by 1redcent, "Her ability to verbally stick a shiv between their ribs, into their black hearts, with a sweet smile on her face, always makes me extremely happy!"

Sarah Palin has had us in the palm of her hand all day. by She of the Cruel Neutrality.

"Isn't it funny how she caught our attention with her scrawled-on hand? I picture her — hanging out with Todd today — laughing at how absurdly fascinated everyone is with her.

Hey, Palin fans! Here's an idea: Ink a list of 4 items on your left hand with the second one crossed out. Take a photo of it and link to it here."

They do just that. Just two or three so far. Starting with Ann Althouse herself.

Joe @ 1:13 am, and anyone else who missed the speech, go here to find it: Sarah Palin's Complete Tea Party Address

If you're not already a registered you will have to do so, but it's free with no obligations.

Also take note of the fact that the writing on the hand is not blurred from sweaty palms.

My guess is that this is someone that can construct a speech from scratch by asking one simple question.
"What did you want me to speak about?"
Then goes on stage and does it. She knows what to say and has a response to the questions.
Whereas that other guy doesn't even ask, he just has his lines fed to him and has no idea what he answers are.

gimbol, she doesn't even have to ask. She knows!! She is one of them. Unlike most of the other so called politicians in Washington (Ottawa, London, etc.)

I got it, Kate!

Obama, the Tongue-Tied: The Scariest Man In America.

The Emperor Has No Clothes at Day by Day.

"If President Teleprompter cribbed, he'd end up stark naked to write what he needs down."

Jema,

Those "Hi Mom" pics are hilarious! Too funny. What a perfect way to respond.

And Kate: love the phrase Redneck Teleprompter.

Piece of trivia: Between being Mayor and Governor, Palin owned a consulting company called "Rouge Cou", ie Red Neck.

Interesting how the left obsesses with notes on Palin's hand while their brown god and his flying monkeys Pelosi and Reid go about destroying the economy and the soul of a once great nation. Sick f*cks all of 'em. Why don't these children just all go off to California and live in teepees and play at life like good little greenie self-centered Obamabots and leave the adults alone to build, produce, honor, love and nourish.

It all depends on who you are how it is reported. We all know what "potato(e)" references. But a few years later, another VP while talking at a school in NJ(?) was waxing on about the benefits of diversity, and told the students that "E Pluribus Unun" meant "From one, many." Covered on the news, though the clip on NBC I saw indicated that the reporters did not catch the mistake. The VP? Father of the Internet. Had it been pretty much any non-liberal, we would still be hearing jokes about it.

It is truly pathetic how the left is so paranoid about Sarah Palin that they will jump on any and everything in the hopes of finding some "dirt".

If all I needed as prompts for a 45 minute speech were 6 words, I'd write them on my hand, too.

Except for the fact that they were prompts for a pre-screened softball question asking her to list 3 top priorities of a conservative congress. She had to refer to her I-Quit palm pilot after the 1st. The answer she gave was all vague platitudes and incomprehensible gibberish. She hasn't improved one iota since her Katie Couric fiasco.
Our Teabag Lady of the Angry Right Fringe. Run, Sarah, run.

So, what's the argument?

"You haters on the right always pick on our Redeemer for using the teleprompter, even when he talks to himself. But your back-woods Barbie writes on her hand, and you praise her. Hypocrites!"

That's the favorite opening gambit of the left: when criticized or accused of some wrong-doing, they point out that others ... heck, everyone does it too. So, it can't be that wrong; you, the accuser, can't think it's that wrong, otherwise you wouldn't do it; you're just being a partisan hater, and now you have to shut up. Its their way of asserting moral equivalence. They get away with it, even though we all know its a fallacy. Why? Is it because we're tempted by their moral relativism? Who was it coined the expression 'Defining deviancy down'?

The left has made high art of this strategy. They now use it preemptively: when planning or engaging in some new nefarious shenanigan, rather than wait to get caught, criticized, and put on the defensive before they play the moral equivalence card, they start accusing their opponents of doing the very thing they themselves are already doing. (I wonder if Alinsky recommended the strategy. Anyone know?) It's become a "tell", for them. I think Ann Coulter has been on to this: she said something like 'If you want to know what the left is thinking, look at what they're accusing others of'.

Huffpost The Liberal Wingnut Spazz Out says "don't write on your hands folks, its so ... common"

Palin ripped the Democrats and Progressives a New exit in their posteriors and this was the only story they could come up with. Now that is low rent and stupid.

Writing "HI MOM" on your hand the next day... now that is smart and priceless.

I love the sound of heads exploding in the morning.

Not that it matters but most female attire is not suited with places to hide/store crib notes unless it is a frikkin business suit and chances are the female versions also have less pockets.

I agree, Palin will never impress the MSM and political elites so turning their snottiness against them is the perfect response. "Hi, Mom" written on her hand is far too nice (but appropriate, I suppose). I could think of at least a dozen or so other phrases to rub the medias nose in their excretions. I hope the next Tea Party gathering will include lots of hand-written messages to the MSM and politicians.

Just speculation of course, but I think that Palin set this whole thing up from the beginning.
She is well aware of the intense scrutiny, and I am convinced that she would have been very disappointed if the hand had not been noticed at the tea party speech.
Shes messing with them big-time.

So, Sarah, hows that "I'm do dumb I have to write on my hand, thingy workin' out for ya"? I wonder if she wrote wrote "quit job" on her hand before she resigned? Seriously, this woman is stupid. Not just ignorant. Stupid.

If folks on the left think that this is going to gain traction with the average person, they are sadly mistaken. It will all be to Palin's advantage -- which is how it already seems to be going, thanks in part to her own clever response.

LMAO Doug.
This "stupid" woman, in less than a year has accomplished the following:
-Written a best seller book.
-Set herself up with an agency to look after her speaking engagements.
-Earned many millions of dollars, and will earn many more.
-Did a very successful book tour, drawing thousands who waited in line just to get their book signed.
-Today, (8th) she has three speaking engagements,- one in Texas and two in Cal. the second one in Cal is because there was such a demand that they had to have two sessions.
Stupid?
Geez....

Those six words, as I've said before, are informationally empty and aren't 'crib notes' as the left asserts.

The word 'energy' can mean kinetic energy, emotional energy, inland drilling or E=Mc2 or whatever. On its own, it has no meaning.

Palin used key cards placed on the podium for her speech and spoke from them. This is not a word for word reading, as Obama does, but an oral presentation based on key concepts. She gathered them up at the end of her speech.

Those six key words on her palm are not 'crib notes' as the left is foaming about because, as I said, they are informationally empty. And they are the key principles of the conservative and Tea Party movement in the US. Cutting taxes, limited non-intrusive govt, internal energy sources, strong defense, a free market economy. That's it.

Palin refers to these basic and simple principles daily; she doesn't need a mnemonic device for them.

I think what the left hates about Palin is that the left view 'the people' within a two class structure. There are the elite aristocracy who alone have the right to govern and speak. The rest of the population are the hoi polloi and are ignorant and have no right to govern or even speak out.

Obama has Himself told them not to criticize and to simply do as he tells them. The left are the modern day version of the 18th landed gentry of Europe whose income came from tenants on their land - the modern left's bureaucratic and academic income comes from the taxpayer.

The landed gentry/modern left considered that anyone 'in trade' was unworthy and their language was filled with contempt and sneers..just as the left copies that elitist mindset with their smears at the Tea Party movement (i.e., tea baggers). It's astonishing how the left today is a clone of the 18th c. elite gentry! Shows how much they reject the basic axioms of America, of equality and democracy.

At any rate, they hate Palin because she is speaking out for the 'hoi polloi', those people who are supposed to shut up and do as they are told by the Elite. The conservative movement and the Tea Party people are refusing to be silenced by this hubris of the left. Palin is a major voice for them. She has a vital role to play as such a voice for mainstream Americans.

I was impressed with Sarah Palin at the Tea Party
convention. She is a skilled politician, but she
showed an unexpected gravitas, as she realised the
power of the attendees' enthusiasm - a kind of
awe, at what was being created. Not the trivial ego-driven response of the usual politician.

It is not correct that Sarah Palin was created by
the filthy attacks of the left, but they have
accelerated her rise. It is amusing, and an index
of the thoroughgoing stupidity of leftists, that they can't
grasp that point.

It was a good idea for her to write on her hand.
She knows that she is and will be the subject
of totally negative media coverage, and dropping
or otherwise misplacing a cue card, or even being
seen to use one, would have
been spun to create a bad impression.

I watched the speech. Sarah had notes she referred to in the usual manner. Maybe she wrote on her hand to prove to Olbermann she could read and write. I don't care if she writes on her palm. If she gets people involved into the betterment of her country and restoring good values I'm for it if she writes on her forehead in reverse.

ET:

Not sure where I saw this, but can I add it to you analysis?

The far left, ie progressives, have a easy narrative to figure out.

First, the hoi poloi are stupid.

Second, they hold the moral high ground as opposed to the malevolent Republicans.

Therefore, goes their mythology, evil Republicans as misleading a stupid populace who can't understand what's good for them ie the ‘progressive' wing of the Democratic Party.

Just listen to what Obama has demonized so far: doctors, private aircraft manufacturers, bankers (who, curiously enough finance the US debt), Las Vegas.

Trouble is, they can't understand there's value in every human being, so they accuse their opponents of being ‘anti-intellectual,' deluding themselves into believing they're something special.

Everybody's entitled to their delusions, I suppose.

Just laugh at them whenever they show up here, spouting their alleged superiority. They're no better (or no worse for that matter) than anybody else here.

That's not me, that's an impostor leftard with a pea brain.

You may not remember, but during the presidential race, in her speech to the republican convention, her teleprompter malfunctioned. She didn't miss a beat.

Obama, on the other hand, can't order pizza without his teleprompter.

I have to laugh at everyone on this one. The whole world is going crazy on this crib notes thing - the progressive liberals mocking this high schoolish bathing beauty moron and her admirers amazed at how smart she is.

But no one yet has got the message...a message that was intended for only one person. Sarah, my friends, has a tremendous sence of humour...with a nice touch of sarcasm thrown in. And that hand thing was a clear personal shot across the bow at Obama. And he knows it. He saw that and must have riled. Instead of 6000 words on a teleprompter...she only needs a "handful.

She truly is brilliant...good on her.

set you free - yes, Obama, who is both an elitist and a malignant narcissist who feels he must control other people, has demonized a lot of Americans.

Doctors who 'take out your tonsils' just because they are greedy for money, bankers who 'are greedy' - and yet Obama insists that they loan mortgages to people who will default. Anyone who makes over 250,000 a year does so not because of merit or hard work. No, according to Obama, such a financial reward is only because 'they are greedy'.

You see, the leftist elite consider that wealth comes only from 'the land', which is in modern terms, the taxpayer. So the bureaucracy and the govt - their wealth is OK to Obama. The many members of Senate whose wealth is in the millions, their plump pensions and benefits - that's OK. Same with academics - that's OK.

The wealth that is considered achieved only by greed is, to these 18th c gentry clones, only gotten by 'trade'. By working in business. The left gentry considers that such a career is only done by the ignorant unwashed rednecks, and the money earned is due to 'greed'. Greed.

The fact that the left produces nothing of value; that it relies on the goods and services provided by the hoi polloi for both those goods and services AND for all the tax income - the left gentry don't understand this.

As for Obama, he is as an elitist, constantly chiding and lecturing 'the masses'. You see, they can't think for themselves. He tells them that they would vote for His health care and the only reason they don't at the moment is that they are ignorant. He has to explain it better, in dumbed down language. Alas, he hasn't had the time! The fact that the majority understand his proposals very well and reject them for their lack of merit- that could never occur to an elitist.

Obama continues the daily Father Lectures; he tells Americans to exercise more, to turn off the TV, to do their homework. He has no respect for other people. The elitist arrogance, coupled with narcissism - quite the combination.
