Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here are the London Symphony Orchestra performing the second movement, Andante moderato, of Gustav Mahler's Symphony N° 6 in A minor ¤ §, Valery Gergiev conducting, in 2007 (4:03).

Nota Bene: This is Reader Tips. This is not let's talk about what I want to talk about because Kate hasn't posted an entry on it somewhere else yet. Kate has made this policy abundantly clear in the past. Comments that are not reader tips or comments on reader tips, or that violate the other rules stated above the comment box, will be unpublished.

Updates: from Vitruvius and from Kate.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

They are entitled to their entitliments....

Harper among former Reformers entitled to collect big MP pensions

OTTAWA - Almost all the remaining MPs from the old Reform Party - including Stephen Harper - stand to collect over $100,000 a year in pension benefits once they retire.

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/100221/national/mps_pensions

Yes, that's the law, Justthinkin.

Oh, alright.

Define "reader tip" as it is highly subjective.

Also, there seems to be a strong demand for an "open blog mike", "blogadio" or "bloggeraoke" judging by the type and amount of comments posted on SDA Late Night Radio. After all, back in the day, friends or mere acquaintances sharing a common space, while listening to the radio, would discuss the topics of the day which often led to other discussions-they would not just focus on the music or radio program, although it was "instrumental" in bringing the group together, and, most assuredly appreciated, enjoyable, and often educational material that certainly supurred or initiated many disscussions; it simply was not the entire focus of the gathering.

What people share during a karoke sessions is usually consists of rather different material - such as how funny or ridculously bad or amazingly well the last person sang. Any topics introduced, via comments with or without links included for others to check out on their own, in this type of a forum or format will utlitmately be ignored by others if thier comments or reading suggestions/links are not of interest or provoking anyway.

Just a thought/suggestion.

No-One, your suggestion seems quite timely. It would address the current embargo on the most significant news of the moment, as enforced by the overnight censor.

I agree, No-One, personally I'd love to get into long philosophical debates about whatever suits my fancy. But Kate has said over and over that SDA isn't a debating society, it's not a chat room, and we are to stay on topic. And the topic here is Reader Tips, which generally means links to things that you would otherwise post in some other thread, perhaps with an "off topic" proviso. This is the place for posting those reader tips.

And look, up to a point, it is what you suggest too. Nevertheless, the discussion here has been going farther and farther astray from the topic lately, so I need to push it back in line a bit. I'm sure things will return to normal (that is, pre-astray) once this delta damps out. In the interim, study the 11:41 supra by BATB ~ that's the way to do it, you see ~ having provided us with a reader tip, namely that the Americans prevailed over the Canadians in a hocky game, she, and now you, could comment on that ;-)

But one can't just come waltzing in here saying, for example, "I don't like Verlinde's paper". That's not a reader tip, and if no previous reader tip introduced Verlinde's paper it's not a comment on a reader tip either, so it would be off topic. Please, for the benefit of the SDA readers, put in the effort to provide a useful reader tip and some information on it. Why should people pick a random YouTube link if you just say "Check this out"? If you want to make a point, it's your job to sell it.

I'm very curious on how Canada does so well in the Junior division world championships, but the supposedly best of the best of Canada have an extremely hard time winning the Olympics?

Is it because they make so much money in the NHL that they don't feel the need to play as hard in the Olympics?

Where is the disconnect between Canada's Olympic hockey team and the World Juniors?

Nice musical choice, V. I always look forward to Sunday nights for this reason.

[You're welcome, Yukon Gold ~ Vitruvius]

The real problem with the chat format is that the software here produces a full page rebuild every time a comment is posted. It eats up server resources, and causes delays for other people accessing the site.

That, and good comments that actually add to the quality of the site's content are totally drowned out in noise that nobody else reads, including me.

There are plenty of conservative forums out there to chatter on, this just isn't one of them.

batb - not good news at all, but on the upside a Canada win is sure to cause a riot on Robson Street - Hockey does that to otherwise law abiding Canadians.

Vit - I was in no way suggesting any commenting rules be violated. I am just wondering why some comments are considered reader tips and others not. Despite them being related to other conservative topics.

I just commented towards batb's "tip" and it was deleted???

Sorry Knacker, my mistake. Your 12:02 is back now.

"Warmer citing polls, not science"

Yes Vit. I know it is the law,but I sorta thought(ok,it was when I was stoned drunk)that maybe PMSH would be a teeny bit different.
What this country needs is a good revolution from the sheeple.

We live in the best country in the world, Justthinkin, and you want a revolution? I think not. It is perfectly adequate for us to work on the continued evolution of the existing system. Although, maybe it's just me, but I think the best of what we have should be: conserved. Tens of thousands of years of political evolution, standing on the shoulders of giants, and you want to throw it all away just because you're impatient. What a silly idea.

I enjoy watching Gergiev conduct. His facial expressions are fascinating.

Justthinkin,

There were three of the original Reformers who didn't rush squealing into the golden trough: Werner Schmidt, Lee Morrison and Preston Manning. Mind you, Manning had an "edge" because, before Chretien made his famous offer that "couldn't" be refused the Reform Party had set him up with some nice RRSPs.

The most disgusting fall from grace was by Deborah Grey, who built her political career on her refusal of the pension and her derisive scorn for all those who stuck to their "entitlement". When an annual take of $75,000 at age 55 was dangled in front of her snout, she made the lame excuse that, after learning of Manning's bout with prostrate cancer, she became aware of her own mortality. Huh? Does she plan to take it with her? Does she have a prostate? Who knew?

Am I the only one that "reads" the body of the Poll?

I left a Comment at climategate

So, Phillip, your reader tip for us here at SDA is that you have left
a comment somewhere. What a remarkably stupid reader tip.

Vitruius,
Don't be a dolt!..The poll cited in Bernie link with the quoted opinion

“In fact, of the 23 countries surveyed, only three get passing grades from their citizens—namely China with the most support (86%), followed by India (60%) and Turkey (54%).”

What do you think that means?

https://www.ipsos-na.com/news-polls/pressrelease.aspx?id=4661

Bernie posted a link. You re-posted it without adding
content. That consumes Kate's storage and bandwidth
costs without adding value. What am I missing?

Vitruvius: "What am I missing?"

Your 7th post in the same thread?

Ah, but that was over 4 topics, ∞², so that's less than two posts
per topic, on average. Besides, administrivia doesn't count, it
says so right here in The DJ's Handbook ;-)

So Vit...you are against a revolution in the government to change some of its ways? Wonder what your kids will think when they are paying 60% taxes to fund the ones at the public teat?

That's your prediction; let that last word be
yours. We're far enough off topic already.

I am a long time reader, occasional poster. Great site. Reader tips are among my favourite postings. When and if I get a site up, the rules will be the same.

"After 200 years, classical composer Chopin's music still holds mysteries

Monday, Feb. 22, is Frédéric Chopin's 200th birthday. That is, it's Fryderyk Chopin's birthday; the Polish-born, Paris-dwelling composer's name is more commonly spelled these days with Ys. And that's his birth date according to a baptismal certificate; the composer said he was born on March 1. Even 200 years after his birth, things that appear simple about Chopin are actually more complicated than they seem.

Including, and above all, his music. Chopin's piano pieces -- all of his pieces involve the piano: no symphonies or operas here -- are lyrical and lovely, poetic and, therefore, seen as accessible. Yet they can also be harmonically intricate, technically challenging.

His 24 Op. 10 and Op. 25 Etudes, far from being simple "studies" for students, are so difficult that the great pianist and Chopin specialist Artur Rubinstein avoided playing some of them. And they can be elliptical to the point of impenetrability (take the final movement of the Second Sonata: a whirling cloud of sound less than two minutes long). Taken together, Chopin's pieces represent a towering hurdle, the benchmark against which a classical pianist is measured -- in part because of the difficulty of finding a way to plumb the music's depths while sounding simple."

"True lies

Markets work by assimilating and pricing information. But sometimes the information is not available or it’s faked. The Greek debt crisis has focused renewed attention on the accounting procedures used by other European countries to measure their compliance with Eurozone guidelines now that the information shortcomings have been revealed. Investors, having lost confidence in the official numbers provided by Athens are demanding better figures. The Wall Street Journal says new doubts about “sophisticated” reporting practices used in the past are being expressed not just for Portugal but even for core countries like France and Germany. One particularly controversial practice is the use of currency swaps on the advice of, among others, Goldman Sachs."

"World’s biggest coal company brings U.S. government to court in climate fraud

The world’s largest private sector coal business, the Peabody Energy Company (PEC) has filed a mammoth 240-page “Petition for Reconsideration,” a full-blown legal challenge against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

The petition must be answered and covers the entire body of leaked emails from ‘Climategate’ as well as those other ‘gate’ revelations including the frauds allegedly perpetrated under such sub-headings as ‘Himalayan Glaciers,’ ‘African Agricultural Production,’ ‘Amazon Rain Forests,’ ‘Melting Mountain Ice,’ ‘Netherlands Below Sea Level’ as well as those much-publicized abuses of the peer-review literature and so called ‘gray literature.’ These powerful litigants also draw attention to the proven criminal conduct by climate scientists in refusing to honor Freedom of Information law (FOIA) requests.

Peabody is, in effect, challenging the right of the current U.S. federal government to introduce cap and trade regulations by the ‘back door.’ In this article we summarize Peabody’s legal writ.

PEC has pulled out all the stops to overturn the EPA findings ‘Endangerment and Cause or Contribute Findings for Greenhouse Gases under Section 202(a) of the Clean Air Act’ made on December 7, 2009. Those findings were in turn premised on the Supreme Court decision of April 2, 2007 of Massachusetts v. EPA, 549 U.S. 497 (2007), where the court ruled that greenhouse gases are air pollutants covered by the Clean Air Act." (more)

Here's an article from "The Amazing Randi" on press objectivity:

Here's the money shot: "He held on to the notion that there was an objective reality that could be reported objectively, despite the fact that that was not our editorial policy at Atlanta Progressive News."

I always suspected that, but it's nice to have it explicitly spelled out.

"The Saudi Pedophile Chronicles

The Saudis really need to get an infomercial out there — and the Nation magazine and other leftist sites that apologize for Islamic gender apartheid can feature it on their webpages. It would go something like this:

A Saudi sheikh dressed slickly in Saudi garb would be sitting confidently in a chair, looking into the camera with an excited smile. He would then begin asking, with earnestness and an encouraging tone:

Are you a pedophile? Do you like underage girls? Would you like to rape one of them — or several? And get away with it? Even have it legally sanctioned? Then Saudi Arabia is for you.

The screen then shifts to a shopping mall filled with niqab-covered women (only the slit of the eyes showing) walking up and down in front of stores. It remains unclear what message this is supposed to denote, but the camera stays focused on these shrouded women for about ten seconds. Then a warning appears that all infidels who are interested must first convert to Islam. This is followed by a phone number appearing over a black background, indicating a contact person who can be reached. A voice then explains that this person lurks within the Saudi religious police and that he will connect interested parties to Saudi fathers intent on selling their underage girls into marriage — a standard practice in Saudi Arabia.

Once more, this time with the link embedded...

Here is an excellent speech by George Will, courtesy of NRO.

In his weekly columns, Will's syntax is occasionally twisted and awkward and his content is sometimes thin, a consequence, I think, of having to produce text on a weekly basis. In this speech before CPAC, however, he is in top form and crystallizes, for me at least, a conservative's approach to life and to government.

At the risk of coming off as an insufferable slithering suck-up - and even worse, being off topic and wasting bandwidth - Vitruvius is an excellent DJ. I really mean excellent. Irreplaceable. If some people find him short-tempered, well, you know what they say about channels you don't like...

I think anyone bashing him on this thread is just annoyed about the whole "don't treat this as a chat-room and please stay on-topic" thing - (and I know I've been as guilty as anyone in that department) - and isn't willing to take it up with the lady who sets the rules.
