Welcome to the Wednesday (EBD) edition of Late Nite Radio. Tonight's song selection is a popular ballad that was first heard in the U.S. in the mid-to-late 19th century, and has been played and sung ever since. There's some debate about the origins of its melody, with various camps claiming it closely resembles some Irish or Scottish tune or other; suffice to say that anyone who hears a resemblance to some other song is probably right, inasmuch as, with the exception of negro/slave music, virtually every American public-domain folk song from the 18th or 19th century is a variant, however many steps removed, of a particular Scottish/Irish/English folk melody.

Anyway you slice it, it's a lovely and enduring song. Here's -- the almost painfully-Causasian -- Irishman Paul Brady singing The Lakes of Pontchartrain.

You are invited, as always, to provide your Reader Tips in the comments.

"Painfully Caucasion"? Of course, I agree, just like Snoop Dogg is painfully black.

An Irishman who is singing while sober!! That's almost as rare as Liberal MP with his hands in his own pockets!

Thanks EBD. I wish you would do more Late Night Radio selections, I really do.

Mao Stlong say, herp Moi, Boob. Send ealthquake lerief and Scotch.

Notice this: >>> "temblor(sic)". ROROR.

BEIJING — An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 struck Thursday morning in the region where China, Russia and North Korea meet, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The temblor(sic) hit about 9:15 a.m., and office towers in Beijing swayed slightly for about a minute."

dp: My understanding is that in proper usage the adjective is different for each ethnicity.

Love it! At the medal ceremonies for Canada's 2nd gold, someone in the crowd waving a huge Red Ensign.

Btw- to that Italian skater, next time you skate against Randy Gregg's daughter Jessica, expect to be put in the wall, those Greggs know how to dish out payback. (This coming from a Winnipeg Jets fan who remembers what Randy did our boys.)

EBD- In this context, wouldn't it be an adverb? I think the proper adverb for blacks is "unforgivably". I watched a great biography of Jack Johnson with that title.

Doh! I guess you're right, dj - my computer's little Oxford says it's an adverb. Seems weird, though, because a colour, or an ethnicity, isn't a verb, unless you, say, white something out.

I think I need to go back to elementary school.

Btw, re Snoop, the right adverb is schizzle-manizzle-y.

Maelle Ricker singing our anthem at her gold medal ceremony, super sweet!
WTG!!!!!!

Ha ... my understanding is that a Caucasian is a person of the Caucasus.

I don't know what a Caucasion is ... perhaps a white skinned charged particle?

In any case ... Paul Brady is more a painfully wan and emaciated Celt.

Oh BTW ... A not waiting for the asteroid .... article:

NBC ...Killing the Olympics?

"temblor" is a correct synonym for "earthquake".

Please tell me that there will be a post about the spectacular failure of VANOC's silly nod to environmentalism, namely the use of Olympia ice clearing equipment at the Richmond Oval.

Allegedly chosen over the ubiquitous Zamboni because of its "carbon neutral" footprint (whatever that is), the Olympias broke down a number of times resulting in several serious delays in the middle of events.

Eventually VANOC threw in the towel and airlifted in a Zamboni from Calgary (evidently a regular hockey rink Zamboni won't do on a speed skating oval).

Take that, Mother Gaia.

What's Causasian?

Mr. Brady is a ginger. Direct sunlight reduces them to ashes.

Pretty song, too bad about the girl.

OMMAG,
Why is NBC intent on a teflon Hollywood Post Production??? It's simple they can't do live events, incompetent..The Commentators don't know the Sports & sound stupid.. they voice over the mistakes in Post and they sound like perfect experts....NOT

I turn the sound off when they get objectionable; telegraphing the results they know in smart-ass

They already announced that NBC will lose ~300M on Vancouver...but that is not because of the Olympics but a fact of the economy...

to all you fans of the fox network here at SDA, take a gander at this ditty about their 'cartoon' show 'family guy'.

3w.cbc.ca/arts/tv/story/2010/02/17/palin-familyguy.html?ref=rss&loomia_si=t0:a16:g4:r2:c0:b0

here's an excerpt:

"The episode has a female Down syndrome character saying, "My mom's the former governor of Alaska."

Palin, who resigned last year as the governor of Alaska, has a 22-month-old son with Down syndrome.

Family Guy is shown on the Fox network, where Palin now serves as a commentator for Fox News."

with friends like that eh?

why is the right wing so full of truly nasty bullies?

meanwhile Iggy sits in his seat at the Olympics hockey venue wondering why the fourth period hasnt started.

curious_george - Fox News is conservative. I don't think anyone has ever claimed that there's anything conservative about Fox's cartoon line-up or any of its other programming. Family Guy is I guess what you'd call left wing, although the amount of political ideology absorbed by the average stoned 18-year-old giggling at it is probably minimal.

luge doubles , something very disturbing about that position. also most competitors seem to be close relatives.

couldnt they make that luge big enough for two?

now there is something george should be curious about.

How about this All-Star Cast: Daniel Ellsberg, Kit Foshee, Mike German, Cathy Harris, Dr. David Kessier, Babak Pasdar, Coleen Rowley and Frank Serpico ( http://fairwhistleblower.ca/content/watch-all-star-whistleblower-event-tonight ) Talk about listening enjoyment!

I call bullshyt. mr entrails continuously makes a farce out of your claim.

TWICE I made a posting about a CBC clip involving the humorous antics of a bomb sniffing dog licking the face of the reporter. TWICE it disappeared. blatant censorship.

Mississauga Matt The one they are using that shall remain nameless (but not a Zamboni)is made by GM or GE I forget which. A sponsor of the games. They are electric, like the Zamboni they are trucking in from Calgary but not like the usual propane powered common in rinks. It appears they work as well as the California buses that couldn't make the grades. Go Green! But Go Badly!

Re: NBC coverage of Vancouver 2010.

American networks do the same thing every Olympics, although I seem to recall a fair bit of live coverage of Beijing 2008.

From the linked article: "Every day, we get emails from Canadians crowing about how awesome their TV coverage is"

LOL. We do have it pretty good. It's one of the few things the CBC does right (when it's their turn). You can't beat Brian Williams as host. Ian Hanomansing has always been excellent too.

Just because US television networks are big and private doesn't mean they're not stupid.

On tonight's National there was a report about the four and a half million Canadians, most of them over sixty, who have high blood pressure. In an effort to help viewers understand what high blood pressure is, reporter Kelley Crowe provided this helpful analogy:

"Having high blood pressure is like turning up the pressure on the pipes in a house: it puts stress on the arteries and veins."

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that!

Hey cal2, thanks for the link to the video of Prime Minister Stephen Harper interviewing Gretzky and Howe in Saskatoon. I could never get enough of that sort of thing.

Here's my two favourite moments:

Gretzky recounted that the first time he played Howe, Howe whacked him on the hands, took the puck and headed the other way. Gretzky said good-naturedly - apocryphally - that he thought to himself, "I'm never taking the puck from him again."

Howe said:

"Yes, we have taken one another out, and yes, we run men into the boards, but...I would say about half the guy in the NHL have friendships, so they don't worry about, you just yell, 'look out', and I got him, so he might as well release it so nobody gets hurt. And that's, that was the change, because...(reminiscing) Ted Lindsay was the meanest......young man (audience laughs) in the world - in practice he cut guys - so the first game I played against him I got him for seven (stitches) . 'Cause he cut my eye for about eleven stitches, and almost took it with it, and I told him I'll get even (with) for you that, I'll be lookin' for you. So, I let five games go by and he forgot. Took that little bull head off..."

And then there was this moment, which genuinely put sports, and life, into its proper perspective:

Stephen Harper:

"Let me ask both of you another question: you had such outstanding careers - and we can all think of highlights from ,i>both of your careers - but let me ask each one of you - and you probably know what the question that's coming next - but the first question is, what was your best single moment in hockey, what was the greatest moment, your best moment from your personal perspective looking back at your career?"

Howe:

"When I met Colleen."

He teared up, in a manly way, putting a thick finger to his eye.

"I choke on...that's not something that...."

Long pause.

"...I've lost her......"

George, once again, you post here without researching and knowing the relevant facts. Seth MacFarlane, producer, creative talent, and provider of most of the character voices on Family Guy, is a solid member of the political left. He is a Democratic Party and Obama supporter.

He is not, as you assert, part of "the right."

I point out, also, that Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly, on their respective Fox News programs, took MacFarlane to task over the episode.

"Olympic Alpine site may be for sale during games
Forbes ^ | 2/18/2010 | JOJI SAKURAI

At the height of its Olympic glory, Whistler - the ski resort hosting glamorous Alpine events at the Winter Games - may be headed for the auction block.

It's owned by a New York hedge fund that is reportedly behind on a $524 million loan payment, the result of flagging resort business and plummeting property values.

Creditors want their money back, and they're playing hardball - calling an auction to put Whistler and other property up for sale Friday, the same day Bode Miller is scheduled to compete for his second Olympic medal in the men's super-G.

The backstory is a parable of our economic times: high-stakes hedge-fund gambles, the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the possible bankruptcy of a company that owns some of North America's most prestigious resorts."

UN/WHO and its "influenza experts" begin another cycle of the swine flu fraud.
...-

"New seasonal flu vaccine to contain H1N1 strain

GENEVA (Reuters) – The coming year's seasonal flu vaccine in the northern hemisphere should contain three strains, including the pandemic H1N1 virus, vaccine experts recommended on Thursday.

The composition of the vaccine, announced by the World Health Organization after a closed-door four-day meeting of influenza experts means governments that have stockpiled doses of H1N1 swine flu vaccine may now use them for part of the seasonal flu vaccine mix.

That raised the question of whether to replace the current H1N1 seasonal strain with the pandemic strain -- also known as California 7 -- which is now circulating more widely.

The composition of the southern hemisphere's separate seasonal vaccine for 2010 was announced last September and also contains the H1N1 pandemic strain."

“Michael Ignatieff, apparently not Canada’s No. 1 fan

By Neate Sager

It might not shock that Michael Ignatieff, Canada’s opposition leader, couldn’t just offer a simple “Go Canada” when asked about the Olympic hockey tournament.

It is not quite John Kerry’s Lambert Field moment, but it feeds the portrayal of Iggy as aloof and detached. The CBC’s Suhana Meharchand kind of fed that stereotype.

“It’s interesting: Michael Ignatieff, he wasn’t wearing a hockey jersey and I told you I was only going to speak to people in hockey jerseys, but he just happened to be at the Aboriginal Pavilion across the road and so I talked to him. He’s Russian background, so he was a little bit betwixt and between about who he’s pulling for. He took the very pragmatic approach.”

Did you get that? He might be cheering for the Russians, and he wasn’t even wearing a hockey jersey. Pass it on.

For the record, Ignatieff, leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, once said, “I do not believe in roots,” in a book about his Russian heritage.”

Larry, the quality of speed skating ice and hockey rink ice are vastly different. I saw what was involved in making and maintaining ice at the Calgary Oval a while back and was amazed at the science and technology behind the scenes.
Just saying, I don't know what Elmira, Ontario produces.

David Axe, Social Scientists Under Fire

How anthropology and other social sciences are transforming the American way of war in Afghanistan.

Eight years into the U.S.-led occupation of Afghanistan, American troops are focusing less on killing insurgents and extremists, and more on isolating them from the local populace — in effect, flushing them out and starving them into submission, often without ever firing a shot.

It’s a strategy that hinges on a detailed understanding of how overlapping Afghan communities work: who’s in charge where, what villages are in need of what resources, how disagreements create schisms between neighbors, rival mosques and entire villages. The idea is to make key interest groups into allies, swaying whole communities to the U.S. camp and convincing them to turn in or simply kill bad actors in their midst...
