Anti-semitism in Quebec newspapers continues. Le Devoir on Friday had two articles on its front page criticizing Jewish influence. One on a trial balloon by the Quebec Minister of Education to let schools have some classes or activities on weekends (which has now come out to be supposedly mainly to appease a few Jewish private schools) and another on The "Droits et Democratie" (Rights and Democracy) subsidized non-profit group whose former president died of stress because of pressure to put a few Jewish people on the board of governors and to end its support for Hamas and Hezbollah.

Now La Presse has its main caricature with the female Minister of Education portrayed as a male Hasidic Jew with curly hair, etc. Not to mention its editorial denouncing the supposed move to open schools on weekends as if if was a Jewish plot.

I have seen a number of front page articles in Le Journal of Montreal as well in the past denouncing these Jewish private schools which number at the most a few hundred students even though the schools were negotiating with the Ministry of Education to conform to various edicts at the time and the "problems" of non-conformity were going to be settled.

Just went to America's Cup TV and noted the race is postponed. I wonder what other sport can delay or postpone their events on a regular basis and still have a loyal audience or hope to capture new fans?

Personally, I prefer the Volvo World race. They have to take what ma nature gives them.

I missed watching AC33 racing live several times due to unstable weather in the race conditions, the race committee having to postone. I did watch it several times yesterday on video replay...amazing racing to say the least. I am currently awaiting race 2, again delayed due to weather that was forcasted not 24 hours ago. The Goracle assumes to assume to predict patterns for decades into the future, yah right. I am hoping for another serious slap down by BMW-Oracle today.

As the background of Amy Bishop, the primary suspect in the University of Alabama faculty meeting massacre, came further into view it emerged that she had shot her younger brother 24 years ago but was never charged. The Boston Globe has a link to Braintree Policy Chief Paul Frazier’s statement describing what he knew about the suspect. She had killed her brother in what was officially termed an accident, but apparently there were significant questions at the time about the resolution of the case. The relevant parts of the Chief Frazier’s statement are reproduced verbatim afther the “More”. The highlights are mine.

“I have been in contact with the Huntsville Police Department to confirm that the suspect in their shooting had been involved in a shooting incident in Braintree 24 years ago. Their investigators will be back in touch with us within a couple of days.”

“The suspect in the Huntsville shooting, Amy Bishop had been involved in a shooting incident in Braintree, Massachusetts in December of 1986. I located the Day Log from December of 1986 and found that the incident had occurred on December 6th. After finding the report number I looked in our archived files for the report. I was unable to locate the report.”

“Officer Ronald Solimini informed me that he wrote the report and said that I wouldn’t find it as it has been missing from the files for over 20 years. He said that former Police Chief Edward Flynn had looked for the report and that it was missing. He believes this was in 1988.”

Officer Solimini recalled the incident as follows: He said he remembers that Ms. Bishop fired a round from a pump action shotgun into the wall of her bedroom. She had a fight with her brother and shot him, which caused his death. She fired a third round from the shotgun into the ceiling as she exited the home. She fled down the street with the shotgun in her hand. At one point she allegedly pointed the shotgun at a motor vehicle in an attempt to get the driver to stop. Officer Solimini found her behind a business on Washington Street. Officer Timothy Murphy was able to take control of the suspect at gunpoint and seized the shotgun. Ms. Bishop was subsequently handcuffed and transported to the police station under arrest.”

“Officer Solimini informed me that before the booking process was completed Ms. Bishop was released from custody without being charged.”

“I (Chief Frazier) spoke with the retired Deputy Chief who was then a Lieutenant and was responsible for booking Ms. Bishop. He said he had started the process when he received a phone call he believes was from then Police Chief John Polio or possibly from a captain on Chief Polio’s behalf. He was instructed to stop the booking process. At some point Ms. Bishop was turned over to her mother and they left the building via a rear exit.”"

Didn't Mr. Moore notice that all of the announcements were first in French, then in English? Watching the ceremonies, I remarked to my husband, "What's up with that?"

I'll tell ya what was missing: Any specific reference to Canada's British heritage. From the opening with the First Nations to the kilted, Voyageur fiddlers towards the end, I wasn't aware of MY history, that is, the history that involved my ancestors who came from the British Isles well over 200 years ago (that would be from England and Ireland). And, darn it, they made a huge contribution to the law-abiding democracy Canada is today -- or was until a few short years ago when multiculturalism (which has led to sky-rocketing crime in our inner cities and big problems in our educational system) took over.

There was plenty of French in the opening ceremonies -- but maybe not $20,000,000's worth!

I watched the Opening on NBC only because the wife was channel surfing and I first thought it was pretty impressive but then again for $35 million you could do a hell of a lot. I was impressed more with the NBC commentaries that were pretty favorable of us Canucks. I flipped over to CTV only to hear the commentators opine about their experiences of carrying the flame. Talk about arrogance.

In all honesty, I can say that you cannot describe the Canadian mosaic in the time allotted. I say this as one who has lived and worked in almost all provinces & territories. Just my humble opinion of course.

Ashley MacIsaac is from Cape Breton Island. This makes him Scottish by nationality, Nova Scotian by origin, and Canadian by citizenship. Any one of those is sufficient to make him "British" compared to anyone who isn't British. Either of the last two are enough to disqualify him as "British" compared to anyone actually born and resident in the British Isles. National identity is relative - or perhaps I should say, relatives...
