Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. I s'pose most folks know Charlie Callas from his brilliant comedy work, such as that which we previously featured here on SDA Late Nite Radio when he performed his famous Shooting Sketch ¤, yet rather fewer folks know that Mr. Callas actually began his career as a professional drummer, playing in groups with Tommy Dorsey and Claude Thornhill. Tonight, for your delectation and further to rectifying that misunderstanding, here's Charlie performing an unusual Drum Solo ¤ on the Merv Griffin show (2:55).

I've updated my coverage of America's Cup N°33 (at The Sagacious Iconoclast), there is an ok article on Friday morning's first race, at Sail Magazine, and the replay is now available at livestream.com (it's a few hours long).

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

According to Melan Davis, a former employee, Blackwater listed the woman for payment under the "morale welfare recreation" category.

The company, which allegedly employed her in Kabul, billed the government for her plane tickets and monthly salary, Davis said.

I can only imagine the laughter your letter induced among the ranks of former seals and rangers.

Watching the Opening Ceremonies on CTV, was sure I saw, when Great Britain entered, and the camera flashed to the stands, was it Princes Anne? There was no acknowledgment of that, verbally by the announcer. However after the US team entered the cameras panned to Biden and they made quite a fuss of it all. Perhaps it wasn't the Princess Royal? Also have read some sad news today, apparently a suicide
attempt by Alec Baldwin was either a hoax or a failure. Better luck next time, Alec.

Millions of people are starving all over the planet, and Vancouver is wasting money on Olympics. Isn't that terrible? Joey--eat your spinach!

"I can only imagine the laughter"

kinda like the laughter amongst the Canuck artillery personnel as the come up with sarcastic commentary about providing instant free wells as they paste a taliban target? that kind of laughter? see, I read Ms Blatchford's book.

did you?

Poor Rick hansen.

Typical cdn solution - rather than have one person light the flame they have four. No disrespect to the four, but could that actually make a stand and pick one? Pathetic.

Gord, I predicated they would have a man, a women, a handicapped, a native, a gay, a first nation, ... I wasn't far wrong. This PC stuff has to stop.

Fritz - They could have hit most of those categories with KD Lang

Anne - too true. My 83 year old mom asks "Why is that women dressed like a guy?"

You may recall the line in Robert Service's poem about the lady known as Lou, and "..how ghastly she looks through her rouge". Yeah well Bob, she couldn't hold a candle to our gal from Coronation.

I love it when the screws finally come loose from a lefty troll. My favorite was that cuckoo who had his BBQ stolen and flipped out when the police didn't bring in the SWAT folks to take care of it.

C'mon people...let's just enjoy.
I was amazed by the light show. The giant bear was spooky, but charming.Very entertaining. When I stopped looking for the underlying message I enjoyed it more.
Great to see Wayne with the final honour.

"she couldn't hold a candle to our gal from Coronation".

Actually kd is from Consort which is east of Coronation.

Maybe it was the suit, and maybe not, but for a vegetarian kd lang was looking decidedly porky.

Ladies and gentlemen, please kneel and give appropriate homage to the earthly god, Suzuki.

Now join us in this prayer, O Mighty Zeus, forgive us for doubting that you exist, and turn this rain into snow, at least above 800 metres, and get that singer lady into therapy, we do implore you, if you like exist dude.

Most un-PC momemt of the ceremony was when John Furlong said "God Bless Canada" - can I file a human rights complaint?

Here’s an IPCC story closer to home.

For example, wildfires in Colorado (2002) and British Columbia (2003) caused tens of millions of dollars in tourism losses by reducing visitation and destroying infrastructure (Associated Press, 2002; Butler, 2002; BC Stats, 2003)."

She does have that writing style reminiscent of a Burroughs or perhaps a Stratemeyer writer. A woman that time passed by perhaps?

Charlie Callas was great, but as a drummer? I didn't know. Thanks.

The real world can be oddly just at times.

The US boat had about 20ft more height, as I understand it. In light winds this can be a big factor. Different height, different air.

First of all, who dares to speak for "the world"?

What am I to infer by the word, "nuanced"?

Thanks Joe, sorry Coronation.

Yes, larben. That WAS Princess Anne and, as you say, absolutely no mention of it by Count Lloyd.

'Underwhelmed and embarrassed -- and I need to add pi**ed off -- by the Olympic spectacle:

* For crying out loud, Canadian Natives proclaimed "heads of state" for the two weeks of the Olympics -- and they were LATE for the opening ceremonies, leaving a huge gap in the dignitaries' section. No dignity, no class there. Hmmm ... wonder what they had for dinner ...

* The RCMP officers who carried the flag couldn't even keep in formation. Their arm swinging wasn't in unison, one side going this way, the other side going that way. What a fiasco. The cadets at my high school used to do better than that.

* What's-her-name who sang the National Anthem sang it like a pop song. What the ...? Watching our athletes didn't do me proud, as most of them were talking and hanging out, not showing respect for our country.

* What's with the gum chewing of the athletes entering the stadium? And, silly me, IMO, they shouldn't be allowed to have cell phones and cameras, taking photos of themselves and the crowds. Any dignity and pride they -- or we -- might be feeling is totally negated by the "hey, mom, look at me!" grandstanding. Whatever happened to a higher standard being expected of our brightest and best?

* Yes, that was Romeo D'Allaire who was helping carry the flag AND Donald Sutherland. What was He doing there? He did some of the voice-overs as well.

* You'd think from the centre piece of the dancing Natives that their culture was Canada's crowning achievement. Heck, they hadn't even invented the wheel by the time the Europeans boarded their sea-going vessels to seek a new world. And, how ironic, all the high-tech stuff as the backdrop of the Native narrative. At least it didn't malfunction at that point.

* The only vestige of MY culture (I know, I know, we've been shoved out of the healing circle -- our fault, apparently) were the flying, festive, fairy-dusted fiddlers and their manic followers, a rather pathetic commentary on OUR continuing relegation to the dust heap of history.

The multi-culti, green, revisionist history of our home and native land was predictable but disappointing nonetheless.

k.d. laing IS an amazing singer (though she is looking more and more like Wayne Newton every year) and I liked Joni Mitchell's rendition of Clouds and the flying Tom Sawyer, er, W.O Mitchell as a kid. But where was the West coast's Dianna Krall or Michael Buble? I guess you can't have them all.

The failure of the hydraulics at the climax of the evening warmed my Luddite heart. Sorry. This high-tech stuff has just got out of hand. The look on Steve Nash's face was priceless when the phallic symbols refused to have an erection. I would rather have seen a much less hyped presentation with dignity: one person approaching the torch (what was THAT the organizers had in mind? fire logs?) and lighting it, so that the Olympic fire was the centre of attention not the apparatus needing to be lit.

So, let the games begin!

“Garrett’s roofing fire admission (Australian governments ‘environmental’ ’stimulus’ killing people)

PETER Garrett has admitted his troubled $2.5 billion insulation program has been linked to 86 house fires around the nation as the opposition stepped up calls for him to resign over his handling of the scheme.

As opposition environment spokesman Greg Hunt called for an investigation into the rise in house ceiling fires, it emerged that the government’s program to give homes with foil insulation safety checks has stalled, despite fears 1000 roofs have been electrified by inept installers.

Standards Australia said it would review thermal insulation procedures, adding that the standard for installing insulation was not mandatory, and did not cover foil products.

The government undertook last February to insulate 2.7 million homes as part of its $42bn stimulus package, but the program has been dogged by claims of rorting and safety problems.

The Environment Minister has been savaged for his handling of the $2.5bn program.

Tony Abbott said Mr Garrett must pay with his job for the lives of four insulation installers lost in the program and resign, otherwise “the Prime Minister has to sack him”"

LONG BEACH, California (AFP) – Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has broken from philanthropic work fighting poverty and disease to take on another threat to the world's poor -- climate change.

I will respectfully disagree (partially) with your opinion on the opening games, BATB.

I was okay with most of it. I thought it was touching at times, cloying at times, stupid / embarrassing at times, but overall...not as bad as I feared. I think it was a relatively fair artistic presentation of Canada.

I was half-expecting the natives to welcome everyone...and then tell everybody to get off their land!! Treated like heads of state...well, in their own minds (and from a certain perspective), they are.

And while I have no love for kd Lang, she sang wonderfully...I may disagree with her perspectives on life, but if she doesn't try to push them down my throat, then I say live and let live.

WRT the Mounties being out of step - you were watching their arms, not their feet. Watch it again, they were in step. Left foot/right arm forward.

Even though I am retired military, I do question Dalaire being a flag-carrier. I think Lew Mackenzie would have been a better choice, or even that Master Corporal Medic who lost both legs to an IED, but has come back to active duty with artificial limbs, which have barely slowed him down.

"Syrup-sucking Iceholes, Saskatche-whiners everywhere - Dare to believe! The time has finally come: Go Canada Go!"

That was Ian Mulgrew writing on the subject of the Games in the Vancouver Sun. Where on earth did THAT come from I wonder?

Eeyore: "And while I have no love for kd Lang, she sang wonderfully...I may disagree with her perspectives on life, but if she doesn't try to push them down my throat, then I say live and let live."

When did I say she didn't sing wonderfully? I said "k.d. laing [sic] IS an amazing singer." She is. And when did I say she shouldn't live as she does? I didn't. I simply said she's looking a lot like Wayne Newton these days -- and, I would add, pretty porky, as someone in another comment put it.

rmgk: Re the RCMP flag-bearing formation: " ... you were watching their arms ..." Yes, I was. So why, if their feet were in unison (which I noticed they were), were their arms not? They were all facing the same way. I don't get it. It looked messy. Should it have?

The most embarassing part of the Olympics for BC was not the small Glitches or even the larger one with the cauldron.

It was Premier Gordon Campbell spazzing out jumping up and down and waving like a 13 year old girl at a Jonas Bros Concert.

CTV had to reframe the dignitaries to exclude him making a Jackass out of himself. Described as the excited man with the white hair to the right of the Prime Minister.

I guess you haven't been around a lot of entertainers, Larden. In that peer group, KD Lang does not stand out as being the least bit unusual. The same might be said for athletes. I've been surrounded by athletes for 35 years, and I've learned to overlook a lot of outlandish displays.

I never met KD, but spent some time with some of her old friends. I think she has a great voice. She's the only singer who ever convinced Roy Orbison to perform a duet.

I've spent some time working around Consort, and I can see why KD decided to do whatever it took, to get out of that festering hole.

maybe Campbell was into the sauce again?

Sorry, BATB, my comment re: kd Lang wasn't stemming from YOUR comment, but from others up above. I should have been more precise.

I think I saw Harper taking Campbell's keys.
