I was just going through some photos that I took on my first trip to Malaysia in 1970. At that time the hijab was nowhere to be seen and bare-headed Malay women wore very colourful sarongs. On my last trip there a few years ago, the hijab was everywhere and the colour was gone, except for the non-Muslim Indian women wearing saris. The only women who were bare-headed were those of Chinese or South Indian ethnic origin.

This stuff is coming like a flood now. Why was all this stuff not reported until now, but all of a sudden it's getting into the papers? Is it because the reporters and editors are freezing their arses off this winter so they're more likely to print these stories? Are they really that shallow?
The Afghanistan Oil Factor debate just won't go away. Over coffee, friends related a great "Documentary" that laid out the pipelines going through the Afghan countryside that spurred the war.
There is no pipeline, nor is there likely to be one; according to this Professor.

velikovsky's stuff has everything defying gravity. you just dont move planets and have them swing by in historic times and then zip back into circular orbits. I first read "Worlds in Collision" in about 1969 and even as a young teenage thought the erratic motions of planets required by Velikovshy was bunk.

albertaclipper @ 9:40 p.m.:
Your post reminds me of a couple of newspaper items I saw recently that back you up.
On Saturday, Jan. 9, Kamal al-Solaylee wrote in the Globe and Mail about his childhood in Yemen. Included was a photo of him and his seven siblings wearing their bathing suits on a beach in Egypt in 1975. He says his family was open-minded and very favourable to culture and the arts, including the Beatles. "The Brits brought order", he quotes his father saying. But today, following a guerilla movement in the '60s, independence from Britain, and the repatriation in the early '90s of many Yemeni expatriate workers from other Arab states (as the country had foolishly supported Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait) whereby the newly large number of unemployed and disaffected youth became fodder for Wahhabis and Islamic extremism, things have changed dramatically for the worse. Al-Solaylee says that even in 1992, his family seemed defeatist, especially his sisters, even though they all were working. In 2001, he says, the family was much closer to the stereotype of regressive Muslim culture than before, and his brothers were sexist toward their wives. And in 2006, on his last visit, anti-Western and pro-Islamist sympathies were present in practically every conversation with friends and family. The government has been in office for 30 years through what Wikipedia describes as "semi-free" periodic elections. Although it doesn't sound particularly pro-Islamist, al-Solaylee writes that in the capital and the cities, where it still holds sway, the places are full of red tape, whereas everywhere else is practically lawless.
The other corroborating evidence comes from Antonia Zerbisias's column in the Star on Wednesday, Jan. 27. She wrote, "My Gaza-born girlfriend Samah tells me that, when she was little, her mother used to wear - in public - miniskirts and other revealing Western fashions. Now when Samah returns to visit family she, like other women there, must cover up."
All of this seems to indicate that many Muslims, should they have the choice, would gladly adopt a Western-influenced lifestyle with considerable personal freedom while maintaining a moderate faith. The tragedy is that, as was the case in communist and fascist countries, a small group of thugs managed to seize control and to intimidate the populace, even if not actually running the government (as appears to be the case in Yemen).
What the world needs more than anything is a moral code based on reason and the full implementation of the fundamental principle of a civilized society, namely that no person has the right to initiate the use of force on any other.
cal2, that article was awesome, thanks!

"Lancet retracts paper that linked vaccine and autism
PARIS — Medical journal The Lancet on Tuesday retracted a 1998 study linking autism with innoculation against three childhood illnesses, a paper that caused a major ethical storm and a backlash against vaccination.
The journal said it was acting in the light of a judgement last week by Britain's General Medical Council against Andrew Wakefield, the lead researcher in the study.
"We fully retract this paper from the published record," The Lancet's editors said in a statement published online."

And in 1995 the Clinton administration began a policy of attempting to engage the Taliban. The story of this effort has never been told in full. I first became aware of U.S. engagement with the Taliban during a stint as an intern at the U.S. Embassy in Tajikistan in 1997. Declassified State Department cables now show that efforts at engagement began just three months after the group emerged in Kandahar in 1994 and well over a year before it took Kabul. The story the documents tell is one of engagement for its own sake—without any consideration given to the behavior or sincerity of an unambiguously hostile interlocutor...

People, we need help making sure this does not happen. If Saskatchewan passes this knife ban, it would become the new leading edge of banning madness, but the cancer would no doubt spread to the rest of Canada.
Tommy Douglas was bad enough. Please don't give us Canada's first knife ban!!

Combating a proliferation of knife crimes would be easier if the province drafts legislation that edges Saskatchewan closer to a provincewide knife ban, says Saskatoon police Chief Clive Weighill.
In meetings with provincial Justice Ministry officials about new legislation, Weighill argued for a provision that would allow police to seize a knife -- or a sword or a machete -- even if it hasn't been used in a crime or there's no discernible intention to commit an offence.

BTW, does anyone recall a news story last year about a dog catcher in a small town (Saskatchewan I think) that was being criticized and possibly charged because he was shooting the stray dogs "behind the barn". I recall the local SPCA and many callers on talk radio wanting the man lynched/sarc. Anyways, if someone can remember anything about this story let me know. It's a great juxtapose, and relevant this week in Sask. Thanks

Peer reviewed. The science is settled. Peer reviewed.
LONDON (Reuters) - The Lancet medical journal formally retracted a paper on Tuesday that caused a 12-year international battle over links between the three-in-one childhood MMR vaccine and autism.
The paper, published in 1998 and written by British doctor Andrew Wakefield, suggested the combined measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) shot might be linked to autism and bowel disease.
His assertion, since widely discredited, caused one of the biggest medical rows in a generation and led to a steep drop in the number of vaccinations in the United States, Britain and other parts of Europe, prompting a rise in cases of measles.
"It has become clear that several elements of the 1998 paper by Wakefield ... are incorrect," the internationally renowned scientific journal said in a statement.
A disciplinary panel of Britain's General Medical Council (GMC) ruled last week that Wakefield had presented his research in an "irresponsible and dishonest" way and shown a "callous disregard" for the suffering of the children he studied.

TV host on Obama: 'Forgot he was black'
By The Associated Press
NEW YORK — MSNBC’s Chris Matthews says President Barack Obama has done so much to heal racial divisions that he “forgot he was black” while watching his State of the Union address.
Those four words — “forgot he was black” — so instantly set the Twitter world afire that Matthews came back less than 90 minutes later Wednesday night to explain what he meant.
The MSNBC commentator said it was noteworthy to him that a black president was addressing a room of mostly white people and how it didn’t seem to be an issue. He said he saw it in the context of growing up at a time racial divisions were ever-present. ..."

OPEN SECRET: Conservative cabinet minister John Baird outed
FEDERAL POLITICS / Baird is a familiar face in gay social circles in Ottawa
Marcus McCann / National / Tuesday, February 02, 2010
In a live interview that aired Feb 2 on Metro Morning, a Toronto CBC radio program, Pamela Taylor was put on the hot seat, asked to name any openly gay Conservative MPs or Ontario MPPs. The trick is, none are openly gay. She named John Baird, a Conservative cabinet minister who has always refused to discuss his sexuality in the media.
Baird is a familiar face in gay social circles in Ottawa. He regularly chats up queer bureaucrats at Public Service Pride social events. He's a friend of gay former Ottawa city councillor Alex Munter. He's attended Ottawa's Pride parties, including the 2009 parade (see photo)....
Guess when you are secretly ashamed of yourself, inner tension is the result....

Although this is "gotcha" style criticism, it is fun for ishts and giggles.
This juxtapose thing is a lot of fun Kate.
Am I the only one here that knew Baird was gay...since the night of the Jan/06 election?
So what?
I commend him for the not wearing his sexuality on his sleeve. His performance has been based on his ability, and responsibility. Compared to Brisson who has flaunted it, Baird has been classy. Would he have a pass from the liberal left wing media for the past 4 years if it was common knowledge? Probably.
cal2 is right.
Full disclosure..I am a socially conservative Christian.
bluetech: I agree. Baird doesn't deserve to have his private life thrown into the press. I had no idea myself, but frankly, it's none of my business anyway.
I've known for years that John Baird is gay. 'Can't remember why.
But, so what? It's only an issue when politicians make it an issue. It's only an issue when politicians play gay politics and try to make out that gays are an extra-special -- not equal, but unique -- group of Canadians, entitled to special privileges and "rights."
Leave John Baird's sexuality alone. He hasn't made an issue of it, and nor should anyone else.
