I'm very happy for the girls. Winning Olympic Gold is a phenomenal feat regardless of the sport.

That said, would anyone like to engage in the following conversation: Judging from the point spreads, and the forgone conclusion that it would be a USA vs Canada final since the last Olympics; should Woman's hockey even be an Olympic sport?

IMO, this is the worst example of a competition on a worldwide stage that I can think of.

Yes, Indiana Homez, there's a double standard, and rightly so. Last time I checked, the olympics were an amateur event. That means following some very strict guidelines. The Stanley cup is part of a professional sport. They can do whatever they want, as long as someone keeps paying them.

Amateur sport, especially at national, or international levels, is governed by very, very strict codes of conduct. Believe me, if any other athlete brought booze to an event, he'd be suspended from his/her sport, for a good, long time.

But what iam against is the constant Uncalled for Cheap penalties that the Canadian girls always seem to endure during olympic play, world cup etc.. when they play the US.
Now when you constantly run a goalie, stop a potential break away by tripping(with the ref rt there), consistant interference you would think those would be penalties Right? They would be if it was the Canadian girls!! At least this time the Ref's did not call 9 penalties in a Row like they did in Turin.

My philosophy is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. In many subjective sports like boxing you often have to beat the champion decisively. The champ will often (and rightfully so) get the benefit of the doubt in close rounds. This can also be conversely so in a David vs Goliath type match(see Canada vs USA hockey).

That said, it shouldn't happen in most sports but it does. Whether its business, or home town favourites we’ll always have to deal with the human factor. The only way to handle this IMO is to expect and prepare for it. The knowledge that this is likely to happen is the best defence, although it isn't always so.

The women should have known better. If you participate in an event,you follow the rules,or you don't participate. The women likely planned this beforehand. It was childish,shame on them.

Uh, Peter (it is Peter, right?), I don't care who they are. Unlady-like is unlady-like. Sure, let them celebrate after a victory they deserve. Try doing it with some class.

So again What was a reporter doing hanging around the Ice Area 1hr after the ceremonies ended? When in all reports there were only a few stragler fans still in the stands.

Not a cigar smoker but I would have loved to share my "cigar" with a few of them.

I was brought up in an all-girl home and wasn't much into hockey. 'Have to say that the whole "hockey culture" isn't really my cup of tea ... can of beer ... glass of wine ... flute of champagne ... whatever.

This drinking very publicly and on the ice is extremely juvenile behaviour on the part of the members of the Canadian women's hockey team and I'm disappointed. It's against the rules. I deal with a lot of kids in classrooms every day who flaunt the rules ... just because -- and it's a real drag. Rules are in place for a reason. These hockey players could have waited till they'd left the stadium to crack open their bottles to celebrate.

In a grade four class today, one of the ten-year olds I was teaching pointed to this picture in the paper and said, "They're drunk." I assured her that they weren't, but have to wonder about the impression this image has made on her.

On top of saying "congratulations" to the gold medal winners, I'd also like to add "GROW UP!"

What a great comment on how we are growing. I feel great that they had a great game won the gold medal and had an innocent celebration and let their hair down. The pressure must have been immense with expectations from the public. Good on ya girls.

And the gold medal for hypocrisy goes to the IOC. After years of studiously ignoring hopped up eastern European athletes and crooked ice skating judges, they come down on a bunch of Canadian college age girls acting the part. They don't seem to be actually smoking the cigar, more like puffing and passing it around (like Clinton it doesn't count if you don't inhale). After 3 sucessive gold medals I say they deserved a little celebration. You go girl!
