Let the circus begin. Or more accurately, the blood-letting at the Colosseum. After all, Toyota’s federal judges in this theater are also major shareholders in Toyota’s competition, GM and Chrysler.
Flashback! - "Those didn't strike us as business criteria at all"

Anyone else notice that the new Sierra commercial refers to the truck as "The Department of Labor"?
No irony in that.......
A group of the world's biggest liars accusing Toyota for not being truthful......
This all might be settled all gentleman-like if Japan promises to buy US T Bills now that China is longer willing to hold its nose.
There is a lesson to be learned hereb by any and all who would think that sucking up to the enviro/safety fascists (as Toyota has done with its obsequious advertising) will result in any sort of immunity.
I can't help but wonder if the Totota Chick in her Tundra pickup will still be lecturing me on everything from shutting off taps to catch-and-release fishing after this one has all settled.
"...After all, Toyota’s federal judges in this theater are also major shareholders in Toyota’s competition, GM and Chrysler."
When I first heard about the U.S. federal investigation into Toyota last week, this reflects my thoughts at the time as well. What an incredible conflict of interest at play here.
The US government is populated by the scummiest, most corrupt people on earth who haven't been previously scooped up by the climate industry.
Yup.
How much ya wanna bet Honda and Nissan are next?
The upside is that when a new plant is to be built by Toyota, it'll more than likely end up here.
The Japanese don't like to be buggered over.

Bryanr, I've noticed that Obama's ratings go low, and they are really low, when he performs his socialist agenda. When he speaks of policies that reflect the centre-right view of most Americans, his ratings go up. This means that the agenda of the Obama gang is profoundly out of touch with America and is almost a totalitarian act of forcing policies on to the people.
What I don't understand is what role the federal govt has in Toyota's affairs. Where, under what legal rule, does it get the authority to call Toyota executives to testify and 'explain themselves'.
It's not only a conflict of interest with the govt takeover of GM but what puzzles me, and I may simply be unaware of the law that gives the WH the right - but, what right does this WH have to question Toyota? It's a private company.
Further to bryanr's Rasmusen update, Bam Bam's Strongly-Approve rating is up a statistically insignificant point to -23. However, yesterday and the day before it was clocked at -22, representing his worst rating ever. So far.
ET, my thesis is that this is extortion to force Japan to buy US T Bills, now that China has stopped. "Buy our T Bills or the Lexus gets it."
All Toyota has to do to calm the storm is unionize its workforce. Of course, that will increase costs substantially and quality will suffer as a result. At that point though they will be protected by the thugs in the Whitehouse.
ET -- good question, I would imagine it has something to do with compliance with federal health and safety regulations.
Putting these aside for the moment, however, I have no doubt the Bam Bam administration feels the same way about things as the B.C. NDP government circa 1996. In the immortal words of former NDP Minister Dave Zirnhelt, "Don't forget, the government can do anything."
Toyota needs to start closing plants in the U.S.
I was saying a year and a half ago that Obama, if elected, would be another Jimmy Carter. I was wrong. He's every bit as incompetent as Carter, but Carter and his staff weren't this corrupt.
Nice little car company ya got there. Shame anything should happen to it.
Is Maurice Strong a director at Toyota ?
You know we've come a long way as a civilization and society when pediatricians no longer worry about small pox, malaria, polio, and whatnot. However, you'll never hear a leftard or eco-nazi say so. No, they just move onto more and more mundane ways in which to control our lives.
If the throttle on your vehicle sticks and you lack the awareness to either depress the clutch or tap the shifter into neutral you shouldn't be driving.
Period.

Sorry, wrong thread.
The fix is in. Force Toyota to unionize as mentioned or spend billions fixing non-existent problems. The MSM, as the Democrat's propaganda arm, will fame the flames to try and force the consumer to buy GM, Chrysler or if all else fails Ford as its not in the government fold.
I remember the Audi scam as the scummy lawyers had a field day after the lies of 60 Minutes. The cost to Audi was enormous for a proven driver error.
I have driven all types of cars and tried to get my company to move to the Japanese cars years ago as the domestics were a maintenance disaster. Drive a 2003 Camry and never have driven a better car including the Mercedes I drove in Europe last fall.
Toyota, don't comprise or bend to these crooks. If there is a problem, fix it and move on. Maintain your quality and your customers will remain with you.
Picking up a 2010 Toyota Tundra SR5 for one of my boys today and I am in the process of purchasing another Tundra crew max loaded 2008 for myself as well. We've always run Chev/GM in our fleet of 7 trucks over the past 6 years and they have all been the LT HD diesel versions, loaded and pricey but easy to clean working in the patch.
That's close to a million bucks in vehicle sales and service over past 6 years that we will now be sending to Toyota Corp instead of Govt Motors. Goin Gault on the pickups I guess.

That's ohhhh sooooo accurate.

Could not agree more Syncrodox.
Could not agree more with ET also.
And then I start thinking about Hitler and Jews and stuff.... Joan Claybrook? Pleeeeeaze.
This is about who should have the priveledge to operate a motor vehicle and who should ride in the short bus....period.
Joan Claybrook??????, see definition of stupid, any one who has read Car and Driver since 1963 will understand, fully.
"If the throttle on your vehicle sticks and you lack the awareness to either depress the clutch or tap the shifter into neutral you shouldn't be driving."
Well, that's what I thought too. But according to George Jonas at the NP, you're supposed to shut off the ignition! Gee, imagine me being wrong all these years.

No engine = no power steering or power brakes
I had a loaner Ford Taurus, my car was in the shop, a few years back and the engine cut out on a stretch of ice as I was just going into a turn.
No steering no brakes, pole ahead.
Turning off the ignition while driving is a bad idea.
If the throttle is wide open simply removing the load (shift to neutral/step on clutch) will soon cause catastrophic damage to the engine. Shutting off the engine at high speed will make control of the vehicle more difficult but not impossible. Best solution was for Toyota to fix the problem when they became aware of it.
I guess we're long past the days when Toyota or any other car manufacturer succeeded or failed based on the merits of their product alone...
The humurous part here is that the offending part is built by CTS in Indiana for the Toyota's built in the US. The part for cars built outside of the US is made by Denso in Japan and is a totally different design with no problems or recalls. This same CTS accelerator is used by Ford in China - who has recalled all the vehicles it was installed in.
From what I have read, CTS holds the patent on the design so it must be American designed and built. I assume that the US insisted on so much content being supplied by US manufactures, too bad it has lowered the quality of the overal Toyota product. GIGO applies to cars as well apparently.

Toyota is no different than any other corporation operating in the U. S. today. Their day in court, in fact, has been delayed by media glorification similar to the treatment provided teleprompter jesus. Did you read anything about the recalls on the Pacific Rim? Hell no, the media is too busy demonizing American manufacturers. Even the "W" administration gave them a "by" on the accelerator problem since being Toyota it couldn't POSSIBLY be that bad. Well, welcome to the real world. Nothing engineered is perfect. Admit the problems so we can all move on.
I don't drive imports of any kind. It seems self destructive to reward those responsible for killing my mother's brother in Normandy and wounding another twice at Guadalcanal. Do you really believe that Generals George S. Patton, Dwight D. Eisenhower, George C. Marshall, Douglas MacArthur and Admiral Nimitz would have welcomed that outcome? I didn't think so.
WHERE IS JOHN GALT? This is too much of live imitating a 50 year old novel. Cripple them to the point where GM and Chrysler will be able to compete.
Whatever happened to hitting the brakes? Putting it in neutral is a sure fire way for an over-speed and "Armstrong" steering isn't a joy either, but somewhere in the synaptic circuits one should be able to decide which is the lesser of the evils for the circumstances.
Ooops, that requires thinking... me bad.
There you go comms guy. Anyone in the U. S. must do shitty work, huh? Drink much koolaid lately?
Uh, by the way, koolaid drinkers, Toyota has braking problems with Priuses around the world. Were the parts manufactured in Indiana?

Do you scrupulously avoid anything made in China as well?
It would seem "self destructive to reward those responsible for killing" Americans during the Korean War.
And why should we buy any American-made products?
It would seem "self destructive to reward those responsible for" invading Mexico and maintaining millions of people in slavery from 1783 until 1863.
@Mazzuchelli, no I find it humorous that the people who are persecuting Toyota are the ones who built the problem part. It was US engineers who designed a problematic "friction stack" in the accellerator pedal and US workers who built it. No one is mentioning that in their critique of Japanese Quality. The Japanese Quality is good (DENSO Unit), the US Quality is the issue here but the hypocrits in office won't admit it. Especially if it is a Union plant producing the product.....
JJM, if you are La Raza, by all means head south now.
I have a Toyota.
It was totally made in Japan and imported here.
Best car I ever owned.
I love it.
Based on it's quality, I'll be buying from Toyota again.
It seems self destructive to reward North American Unions.
They are a major part of what is wrong with this country, socially and economically.
Shifting to neutral in a stuck-throttle situation is a poor choice. Unless the engine is equipped with a rev limiter, it may overspeed to the point of self-destruction, and put a connecting rod through the block or oil pan. Guess what happens to your car if the drive wheels lock up due to a seized engine? Those ABS brakes won't help you much if the wheels are mechanically locked.
Simply leave the car in gear, and switch off the ignition. The steering column will NOT lock unless the transmission is also in Park. The engine will continue to rotate as it is now being driven by the momentum of the car, so power steering will remain available until the car nearly reaches a standstill. Anyway, it takes very little effort to steer a moving car, or to keep it in its lane. Power assist is most needed in parking maneuvers.
Power brakes are operated either by engine vacuum, or by hydraulic pressure from the power steering pump. In either instance, there is a vacuum reservoir or hydraulic accumulator that provides enough assist for one or two brake applications, even with a fully-stopped engine.
Every car owner should actually try this procedure from time to time, in an empty parking lot, or on a deserted back road, just to get a feel for how their car behaves in the event of a sudden power loss or forced engine shut-down. The sudden loss of steering or braking assist can be disconcerting if one isn't expecting it, but unless you are a physical wreck, you CAN steer and stop under such conditions. A little practice now and then goes a long way towards building confidence. It's something that should be taught in all driver's-ed course, IMHO.
"JJM, if you are La Raza, by all means head south now."
But heading south would put me in - America!
Just pointing out that there's a common sense statute of limitations on grievances, my friend. At some point, we have to get on with life.
Nazi Germany and Tojo's Japan have been defunct for 65 years now.
It makes about as much sense to vilify modern Germany or Japan as does to vilify the US for things that happened 150 years ago.
Anyone who is interested Bing search auto recalls. You will find thousands of recall most of which are from the North American auto makers. These are not before congress or in the media because it would be heretical to question the presidents friends in the UAW. That smell, well you know.
Toyota is innocent OK
