Reader Tips

Welcome to the Wednesday (EBD) edition of SDA Late Nite Radio.
When someone is singing a song in a language you don’t understand you can nonetheless often get a pretty good idea as to whether it’s a love song, a patriotic song, or, say, a drinking song simply by noting the tempo, the nature of the dance moves, the singer’s facial expressions, the clothing and set decorations, whether the song is in a major or minor key, and so on.
Good luck with that tonight: our feature performer’s facial and physical gestures are sufficiently foreign as to make it almost impossible for non-Russian speakers to determine either his emotional state or his intentions. He could be welcoming an honored guest with his heartfelt performance, or he could be openly celebrating his success in removing said guest’s toenails with a pair of pliers. There’s no way of knowing for sure, but after repeated viewings I lean towards the latter interpretation.
Here he is then, Smolensk’s own Eduard Hill, aka Edward Anatolyevich, National Artist of the Russian Federation and member of the Order of the Red Banner of Labour, performing the unease-inducing Я очень рад, ведь я, наконец, возвращаюсь домой.
You are invited, in a reassuringly unambiguous way, to provide your Reader Tips in the comments.

“She raised a family in the city of Malmo, and for the next six decades lived happily in her adopted homeland – until last year.
“In 2009, a chapel serving the city’s 700-strong Jewish community was set ablaze. Jewish cemeteries were repeatedly desecrated, worshippers were abused on their way home from prayer, and ‘Hitler’ was mockingly chanted in the streets by masked men.
‘I never thought I would see this hatred again in my lifetime, not in Sweden anyway,’ Mrs Popinski told The Sunday Telegraph.”

  2. Ok everybody, stretch those hamstrings before jumping back on the Team Canada Hockey bandwagon. Me thinks Siberia’s population has increased by about 20 or so. Ye Haaaa!!

  3. Reason #785 that the Western Racism party will never have a majority: The Bernier lecture series on climate science

  4. Boots, you just got to believe. I predict gold medals in women and men’s curling and women and men’s hockey. Awesome game tonight.
Kate for the game tomorrow can we have an open thread please?

  5. EBD 10.39: Were you were being PC? On SDA?
    Complete the quote:
“This new hatred comes from Muslim immigrants. The Jewish people are afraid now.”
Malmo’s Jews, however, do not just point the finger at bigoted Muslims and their fellow racists in the country’s Neo-Nazi fringe. They also accuse Ilmar Reepalu, the Left-wing mayor who has been in power for 15 years, of failing to protect them.

  6. Well, Bernier’s on the right side of history, isn’t he, Dr. Iggy?
Reason #5,822 that Ignatieff is neck-and-neck with Elizabeth May in this recent poll, which asked who is the most trustworthy leader: Ignatieff wants to throw untold billions of taxpayer dollars down the toilet based on the fraudulent science of now-discredited climate alarmists.
It’s as if he thinks it’s 1990 or something.
Incidentally, here are those poll numbers for most trustworthy leader:
    Stephen Harper 25.0%
    Jack Layton 20.8%
    Michael Ignatieff: 10.4%
    Elizabeth May 9.8%
Pretty tight race at the bottom there, eh?

  7. No, gellen, I wasn’t being PC, I was being concise. I don’t generally post an entire article, I excerpt select quotes and provide a link so people can read the rest.
Here are a few excerpts from PJM’s David Solway’s interview
with the world’s most esteemed climate scientist, Dr. Manfred Aufgeblasener-Schwätzer:
PJM: “You are aware, of course, of the scandal unfolding at the Hadley CRU and elsewhere, popularly referred to as Climategate. What do you make of this?”
M.A-S: “It is all nonsense, obviously, a minor — how do you say it in English? — a minor blip. The science is settled. The world is warming even as we speak, moment by moment. Averaged over a decade, the result is alarming. Over a century, it is catastrophic. The prospect of planetary heat-death makes one shudder and gives one nightmares. I have developed a great sensitivity over the years of my work at the Zentrum to the slightest variations in temperature. I see it not only in my computer models and mathematical graphs but can actually feel it on the back of my neck and at times over my entire body, as if I am trapped in a Swedish sauna.”
PJM: “But surely the leaked emails and files indicating collusion among the various scientists involved, the suppression or distortion of critical data, the pressure levied against scientific journals to exclude the work of ‘climate skeptics,’ the pre-selection of weather stations to inflate temperature records, the misuse of tree ring data, the sloppy note taking, the loss or deletion of vast amounts of archival material, the absorption of un-refereed articles, and so on, must signify that a massive scam has been perpetrated on an unsuspecting public.”
M.A-S: “Not at all. Not at all. You cannot believe what you read in the blogosphere. It is all lies, I tell you, lies….The world is growing hotter by the moment and if we do not act very soon, then before we know it there shall be no more icebergs, the islands of the Pacific will sink like rusty submarines, Greenland will become a desert, lobsters will cook in the oceans, volcanoes will boil over, the Arctic will become a spa, Holland will vanish — it is too horrible to contemplate….My collaborator Dr. James Hansen of NASA foretells that New York City will be under fifty feet of water in just two or three generations, and he is an acclaimed expert. We would be foolish to challenge his word.”

  8. From The American Interest.com:
“Environmentalists are still trying to avoid pulling the plug, but the corpse is already cool to the touch and soon it will begin to smell. As the global greens move from the denial stage of the grief process, brace yourself for some eloquent, petulant and arrogant rage. Tears will be shed and hands will be wrung. The world is stupid, uncaring, unworthy to be saved. Horrible Republicans, evil Chinese, demented know-nothing climate skeptics have ruined the world and condemned our grandchildren to lives of sorrow and pain. Messengers will be shot; skeptics will be blamed for asking questions and the media (and the internet) will be blamed for reporting the answers.
“This storm will have to blow for a while; there’s a lot of emotion and conviction in the ‘climate change’ community. A year ago they were the last, best hope of the world, a shining band of brothers (and sisters) who were saving the planet and taming the excesses of self-destructive capitalist greed. The Force was with them and the world lay at their feet. They were going to be greeted as liberators by a grateful world desperate to be saved.
“Now they are just another piece of roadkill on the heartless historical highway – an unforgiving place for people who seek to change the behavior of the world…”
Do read the whole thing – it’s bang-on, and wickedly funny throughout.

  9. From reading what others have posted regarding your musical selection EBD, there are no words. It’s all “la la la la la” and the title doesn’t lean towards anything gleaned from The Gulag Archipelago but rather, “I am very glad, because I’m finally back home”.
I guess in a way it’s topical, the Russian Men’s Hockey Effort can return home and start preparations for Sochi 2014

  10. I think Eduard was just expressing his joy because Gorbachev just told him that the Soviet Union was being wrapped up in 14 years.

  11. I’ve watched a lot singers in my day. I think he’s Ok. It’s hard to judge someone from another part of the world. Remember the first time you saw someone yodle! Now it’s not so bad is it! Thanks EBD!!!

  12. You’re right, Joe Citizen, when I look at it that way it’s not so bad. I have a similar inability to figure out what Yodelers are really trying to say – there’s just such an unfathomable gap between their (apparently joy-filled) expressions and their effect on me.
There’s nothing on this earth more terrifying than a yodeler after midnight.
Hey, this is hilarious: the Complete List of Things Caused By Global Warming. It’s a massive litany, with links provided to every example. The devastation wrought by global warming includes deaf fish, rioting, nuclear war, earth axis tilt, rabid bats, release of frozen viruses, larger squid, less colorful trees, more colourful trees, smaller brains, prostitution, health risks to short-nosed dogs, deformed railway tracks…
    It does go on.

  13. “Killer Whale Kills Trainer at SeaWorld in Orlando”
Yet more evidence that the environment and its non-human inhabitants (see anthropomorphism) are fighting back against the evil oppression and planet destruction tendencies of technological man!
[The “whack-a-mole strategy” of the lefties is quite the construct]

  14. That singer sure looks a lot like Dave Foley, from Kids in The Hall.
Please tell me the CBC is NOT looking to give this guy a series….

  15. You had me scared for a second there, Vitruvius, considering the time of day. Fortunately, both Louis and Johnny had the good sense to not actually yodel. Johnny just sang the words “yodel-lay-ee-aye-ah-loh-ah-lee-a-lady…” as Louis wiped his brow in embarrassment.
And yep, Franzl Lang is the guy I hope I never see yodeling towards me at 2 am, ’cause I don’t want to be the first guy to have his official cause of death listed as “Cognitive Dissonance.”
Not too far from Yodeling Central, i.e. Switzerland…
“A Dutch Labour politician’s call to keep far-right leader Geert Wilders out of a new government has stirred anger among other parties who consider the move undemocratic and likely to drive voters towards him.”
    Undemocratic? D’ya figger?
“‘The Labour party stands for a completely different Holland than the party of Wilders, and for that reason we cannot be in a government with him,’ a spokeswoman for the Labour party said.”
Wonder if that’s the wave of the future: “The NDP stands for a completely different Canada than the party of Harper, and for that reason we cannot be in a government with him,’ a spokeswoman for the NDP said.”

  16. It’s a funny thing, EBD: for me, like so many
famous Swiss, yodelling is a consonant thing.
I’d best stop here, though: no chatting, eh what?

  17. Vitruvius, I believe that in order to yodel you have to repeatedly and rhythmically hit the proverbial glottal toggle-switch so as to hippety-hop between regular and falsetto voice. A person who merely says the “yodel-ai-ee” words without doing that is….fine in my books.
Hey, speaking of yodeling, here’s a non-yodeling story:
“Evidence is mounting that Chinese sales of US Treasury bonds over recent months are intended as a warning shot to Washington over escalating political disputes rather than being part of a routine portfolio shift as thought at first.”

  18. They love us in Russia….they really, really do!
    Pravda:
“We all know Canada has problems with the future lines drawn on Arctic maps and we all know Canada lives in the shadow of its larger neighbour to the south. The abject cruelty shown by Canadian soldiers in international conflicts is scantily referred to, as indeed is the utter incapacity of this county to host a major international event, due to its inferiority complex, born of a trauma being the skinny and weakling bro to a beefy United States and a colonial outpost to the United Kingdom, whose Queen smiles happily from Canadian postage stamps.
“Maybe it is this which makes the Canadians so…retentive, or cowardly…”
    (…)
“Everybody who knows anything about Olympic skating, Winter Olympic sports and international politics will infer from the pitiful and dangerous conditions provided by the Canadian authorities, which already caused one death, that Vancouver is mutton dressed as lamb. Take off the outer veneer and the stench is horrific.
“It is a surprise that any Russian athlete would wish to remain in that sort of environment for a second longer.”

  19. There’s bad news tonight. China’s gubmint has pulled the rug out from under the People’s Heavy Equipment Company that wanted to buy Hummer. The Louisiana Assembly Plant is going to be shut down by GM. Suppose the only chance left is a big final contract from Obama to build transport for his people’s militia units from now until shortly after the Nov 2012 elections.

  20. “It is a surprise that any Russian athlete would wish to remain in that sort of environment for a second longer.”
It comes as a surprise that a supremely talented and skilled Russian team would allow its honourable defeat be sullied by political rhetoric.
Oh wait, did I just make stuff up?

  21. Dare to be a Daniel,
    Dare to stand alone.
No, not alone. We stand with you.
    Thank you, Mr. Bernier.
    More, please.
    Stand with MP Maxime Bernier.
“Here is the full text of my letter, of which La Presse only published two thirds:”
    …-
“Greenhouse gases: Caution is the right stance for Canada
The Montreal daily La Presse published my opinon letter this morning discussing the debate over global warming and the position of the Canadian government. The paper also ran an article by François Cardinal about my position on this issue.
Here is the full text of my letter, of which La Presse only published two thirds:
Greenhouse gases: Caution is the right stance for Canada
by Maxime Bernier, MP for Beauce
During the Copenhagen summit last December, Canada was ferociously denounced by environmental groups. They accused our government of trying to derail an agreement because it was not ready to sign anything. Critics were raised again at the end of January when Environment Minister Jim Prentice announced new targets for reducing greenhouse gases that were more modest than the previous ones.
However, every week that goes by brings more confirmation of the wisdom of our government’s moderate position. Since December, the debate over the scientific basis of global warming, which had been stifled for years by political correctness, is finally taking place in the media. The many errors made by the IPCC that have been recently unveiled add more weight to the various alternative theories that have been put forward for a number of years.” (more)

  22. I think someone in the MSM needs to ask Count Ignatieff if he agrees with the Pravda article ” Vancouver mutton dressed as Lamb” it almost sounds like Liberal talking points from the WK liberal war room!
Just like the liberals the Russians are accusing our brave Canadian soldiers of cruelty.
I detect a Liberal / Russian connection here

  23. piper paul – Surprise, surprise, a killer whale has killed a trainer in Orlando Florida. Perhaps not quite so surprising seeing as it killed two others at earlier gambits. How’s it go? Nature is red of claw and fang; be careful.

  24. I would seriously consider Dr. Manfred Aufgeblasener Schwatzer as in a severe state of paranoid schizophrenia. I’ve seen similar types of apocalyptic scenarios in the writings and claims of clinically affirmed cases.

  25. “10. Walt:
Alan Grayson and Norman Kember were and are distinctly ungrateful for being rescued from certain death by people of whom they disapprove. I believe that next time there should be no next time.
If Saul of Tarsus had saved their arses
    Would that acceptable be
Or would they squirm and remain firm
    To ideology
If Robin Hood before them stood
    And nocked his stout longbow
Would they then cry I’d sooner die
    Than brutish force to show
Methinks that when such as these men
    With arrogance unbound
Believe when they fall in harm’s way
That they must then be found
By folks with whom they have no room
To pass the time of day
It’s time say I to let them die
And leave them where they lay”

Mother Jones confirmed that “Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.), who made his substantial fortune by suing military contractors and later lambasted them as a lawmmaker, was indeed evacuated from Niger by personnel working for Xe Services (the private security empire formally known as Blackwater), his spokesman confirms.” David Schulman of Mother Jones “asked Jurkowski whether the experience had changed Grayson’s thinking on the use of private military firms. Jurkowski replied:
“The Congressman does not deny that there is admirable work being done by some employees of private contractors. However, he stands by his criticism of companies who have been found to cheat the American people, defraud our government, and unnecessarily risk the lives of members of our military, all in the name of making a profit.”
This recalls the experience of pacifist Norman Kember who traveled to Iraq in 2006 in order to protest the war.” (more)

  26. Two Russian peasants are working in the field when one says to the other
“Did you hear that our Olympic hockey team lost the other day?”
“When did they kill the coach?” asks the other.
    “Tomorrow” replied the first.
(Recalled from a joke book received at Christmas)

  27. I’m trying to come up with a reader’s tip in light of Vit’s selection of Edward Anatolyevich but the only “tip” that comes to mind is: Don’t quit your day job.
    [That’s EBD’s selection today, T/C, not mine. ~ Vitruvius]
btw, Russians losing AND Pavel Chekhov’s kid missing… coincidence?

  28. We should take it easy on Iggy today. His hockey team lost last night, though he still has the Americans to cheer for.

Try dropping that name of the author of that drivel into Bing or the googles.
A real piece of work is Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey, music major from the University of Leeds in the UK, if the hyphenated last name was not a dead give away as to it’s nationality.
Just a couple examples of this, this, awww crud, I cannot possibly refer to him here as former miner and present day sailor in me demands….

  30. ET (9:04), the “interview” with the fictional Dr. Manfred Aufgeblasener Schwatzer (his name, roughly translated, is “more blown up chatter”) is satire.

  31. Are you a yorkshireman who was raised in grinding poverty? Luxury!
Glenn Beck mocks the “letters” Obama recieves daily from “children” dismayed and injured by Republicans and Teapartyers.
(It’s weird but it’s funny. I stole it from Ace of Spades HQ, which is a great site, albeit nowhere near as prizeworthy as SDA.)

  32. Canadian Womens Olympic Curling team wins 6-5 in 10 over Swiss, Quite a game both skips seemed to be struggling throughout with percentage’s in the 60% range. It was noted that Bernard playing with a cold.
They now play for Gold against Sweden who qualified with their win over China.
    Mens Martin play tonite

  33. I must say I rarely encounter such erudite discussions of yodelling.
Reminds me of the old joke:
    “Knock knock.”
    “Who’s there?”
    “Little old lady.”
    “Little old lady who?”
“I never knew you could yodel!”

  34. Watch out here it comes, MSM & Opposition will insist PM Harper raised your Taxes.
“Baird announced New flight fee’s for Airport Security”
    CTV.ca
Bob Fife @ Ctv calls it a Tax! Baird calls it a User Fee & i Agree Somebody has to pay for it.
Why should all Canadians have to pay?

  35. Dawkins a god?
Schisiming is a sure path to “lose faith”.
Atheists “lose faith”? Is that an oxymoron/moryoxon?
Dawkins: ““something rotten” in internet culture”.
    …-
“Outraged atheists lose faith in Dawkins as he censors website
Richard Dawkins is accustomed to provoking the wrath of religious communities, but now a schism seems to have opened up within the atheist community who make up his fan-base.
The split occurred after he announced that a discussion section on his website, considered one of the busiest online atheist forums, would in future be tightly moderated and “irrelevant postings and frivolous gossip” would no longer be allowed.
The change was scheduled for next month but such was the torrent of abuse after the announcement that the forum had to be locked down, deepening the rift between Professor Dawkins and his 85,000 online fans.
Writing on RichardDawkins.net yesterday, in a posting entitled “Outrage”, he said that there was “something rotten” in internet culture and pledged to rid his website of its abusive element.”
“Unwilling to be silenced, however, the members of the website and the 15 moderators, some of whom worked unpaid, vented their own outrage elsewhere.” (more)

I’ve curled and I do wish the loudness could be contained. The screeching and yelling and dramatics could easily be replaced with spoken words like, “sweep”, and “don’t sweep”.
It’s not as if the rock’s trajectory changes according to the thrower’s contorted facial expressions or odd, sustained verbal outbursts.
OTOH, full contact fistfights permitted after the rock passes the hog line might spice the game up a bit.
