There Went His Chance At Owning A Football Team

The top Democrat in the U.S. Senate apologized on Saturday for comments he made about Barack Obama's race during the 2008 presidential bid and are quoted in a yet-to-be-released book about the campaign.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada described in private then-Sen. Barack Obama as "light skinned" and "with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one."

Actually, I think Reid's assessment was accurate. I think a lot of white voters were eager to see racial issues somehow disappear, but they couldn't stomach a politician who "sounded black". However, if they closed their eyes and just listened to Obama's voice, Obama sounded white. So that's what a lot of voters did. They closed their eyes and voted for Obama. We shall see how this turns out.

My comment above was based on the CNN report, in which Reid was described as saying that Obama's lack of a black accent and his relatively light skin would be a political asset. That assessment of his is not explicitly mentioned in the Yahoo article cited by Kate.

Who voiced the famous "magic negro" quote, and in what context?

What a jive turkey!

Democrats can say things like that and still own football teams. Rush Limbaugh can't.

Double standard.

Too bad about the football team. But hey, it's not all bad - Reid still has a shot at Vice President.

So if a negro has light skin is he still black? Or is that just another Democrat pigeon hole?

Scratch a liberal (or "progressive") and you'll find a racist. Obama is a prize horse for the naive- he looks black enough but isn't "ghetto". He isn't qualified where it matters but sounds good in front of a teleprompter. Given these qualities, the left love him. These are the same people who slur Sarah Palin and Michelle Malkin. Hypocrites one and all.
Just my thoughts.

Democrats will always be 'Dixiecrats'...this is further proof!

[A]s Hillary bungled Caroline, Bill’s handling of Ted was even worse. The day after Iowa, he phoned Kennedy and pressed for an endorsement, making the case for his wife. But Bill then went on, belittling Obama in a manner that deeply offended Kennedy. Recounting the conversation later to a friend, Teddy fumed that Clinton had said, A few years ago, this guy would have been getting us coffee.

I have mentioned this before, but Obama uses various speech patterns. He often slips into a Martin Luther King-esque accent when trying to soar to great rhetoric, but in one television interview he had no accent at all - which makes sense, given that he grew up mostly in Hawai'i.

So, he projects what to wants where he wants when he wants.

He's obviously a credit to his race.
Wonder if he's got rhythm as well.

Obama makes Bryant Gumble look like Malcolm X.

Sorry folks...I fail to see that as a racist comment. What I find racist is the faux outrage for 'noticing a difference'.
Can't stomach Harry Reid tho.

I find it interesting that for all the bleating about how proud all the Negroes are regarding their race, that the most popular women are the ones who look the most like white women with a tan, straight hair, narrow bridge on the nose, smaller nostrils, etc., but the popularity of thicker lips ala Angelina Joli gives black women an edge.

Not quite so much for the men, but they do need to speak decent English, no Ebonics, but must be able to understand that street talk and and be able to talk that trash when necessary.

I note that Obama drops the g's off of ing words when he wants to sound folksy, but then Hillary does that too.

What a phony world we live in.

Harry Reed is neither a black or white man, his is reptile.

Well, at least Reid didn't say "They sure can sing, run, dance, and play football!".

But the "light skin" comment? Even among blacks, there are social distinctions based on skin tone. I wish I could remember the movie where one black referred to another one as a "high yellow n****r", meaning his skin was light enough that he could "pass". And I remember a Spike Lee movie where one black woman noted that one of the black men only dated "darker sisters" to prove he was a "real African".

But, according to the PC police, blacks are allowed to notice such differences. White people - not so much.

But wait...There's MORE! Apparently Bill Clinton said to Ted Kennedy "A few years ago he (Obama) would be getting us coffee".

No football team for Slick Willie, either.

I don't know about the rest of you, but it's Obama's Arab blood that worries me. There were plenty of African Americans that would have been better presidents. He just happened to be in the right place, at the right time.

I've said to my wife many times, racism would be all but dead in the U.S. but for its continued promulgation by the hard left in general, and the Democrats specifically (and the Liberals/Dippers in Canada).

Of course, pockets of racism will always exists, but by and large, the widespread, systemic racism of the past is dead. The election of Obama is proof of this, especially since he wasn't even worthy of the position on a merit basis, yet he was elected anyways.

"Obama is the nation's first African-American president."

PROVE IT. Show me where is birth certificate, the full one say he is AMERICAN

Right know he still just a lying african.

KevinB.
That may be the movie "Night Of The Quarter Moon".
A 1950's classic starring Nat King Cole ( a favourite of mine) who played a quadroon night club singer.

Whoever said Obama is America's first affirmative action president was right on. Obama is an empty suit with a great big baritone voice and bit of southern baptist drama that gives it an edge.

Loooooooaaad Haffff Mercy!

The deep baritone voice instill confidence sine the big deep voice sounds adult and mature and confident. Mulrony had that too. It's all bullshit, but then, look at what entertains the unwashed these days.

don't ever make the mistake of calling my oldest granddaughter african any thing!!!!!

"""Sorry folks...I fail to see that as a racist comment. What I find racist is the faux outrage for 'noticing a difference'."""

I'm with you on that, but if this comment had been issued by GWB...just imagine the leftist outrage

Abe

The catch phrases add to the effect...Make NO mistake...

GYM - The media would have gone wild - and the GOP enablers would have sided with the wackos. The only GOP guy, with any guts/integrety, who ran in the last election was Ron Paul. Senator Paul saw the whole picture, the media could not fight him in the usual intimidation- blackmail manner so they ignored him and the GOP and the population allowed the media to do so.

Hmmm....
That remark of Slick Willie to Teddy....about getting coffee...
Plus that comment in the primaries----referring to OBOZO as ".....that Chicago thug..."
Now...that's 2 things now that have impressed me about Slick Willie....
Harry Reid is treading water.....ACORN can't help him in Nevada....weak demographics...

But of course you all bought GWB, the aristocratic blueblood from one of the most powerful dynastic families in the world a-talkin' like a Texan cowboy hick. That was real convincing.

The way Obama spoke always reminded me of this scene

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7hx3SKxsac

Heard on Fox,that Geraldo is gonna be all over this tonite.maybe he'll have Coulter/Sharpton debate!

TJ already said it. It's ok for a Democrat to say this tuff, just not anyone else.

I loathe Harry Reid BUT ... we sure live in strange times when an obvious, undebatable truth becomes "controversial".

When I first heard Owebama speak I thought he must have gone to the William Shatner school of public speaking. After watching him for a while I now realize its because 3 words is all he can read and remember at a time.

Is this the beginning of whatever silly reason they're going to use for Harry Reid's retirement? I can't see him running in November when he knows he's toast. The party has to want rid of the extra baggage and the embarrassment of losing the majority leader.

I think this statement is indicative, not of Reid, but of the Democratic radicals who chose Obama to get them into power.

Obama wasn't chosen and run by this radical set for his leadership abilities; he has none. He wasn't chosen for his expertise in any political, economic or legal field; he has none. He wasn't chosen for his administrative experience; he has none.

These Democratic thugs chose him for his malleability to their being his string-pullers. He was chosen as their puppet, their upfront salesman who had ONE skill - the ability to charm, misinform and manipulate an audience. AND, who had one characteristic; a half-black/white physical presence that could be used to manipulate white guilt and black adulation.

These two qualities of Obama - plus his inexperience, his ignorance, his intellectual shallowness - meant that they could use him to put them in power.

The problem is, Obama put them in power but he seems unable to sell their policies of statist socialism. And, they and he are losing badly and rapidly in the polls.

This statement by Harry Reid shows the cynicism, the blatant scheming manipulative strategy of these radical Democrats to gain power. They aren't interested in Obama as President but in Obama putting them in power. THEY are the presidency; he just reads the teleprompter.

And it also means that this BackRoom Gang will dump Obama if he becomes a hindrance to their power and their agenda.

Who gives a rat's a what colour he is. It is his Marxist agenda that is the problem. Harry is a weasel.

marquis, you are very misinformed.

I grew up in Midland, where the Bushes lived, through junior high. I know what junior high the future president was in and that of the future first lady.

You also must remember that he was governor before he became president.

As I write this, I live a couple a miles away from his Dallas home.

And I promise you and assure you that he has spoken this way all of his life and still speaks that way today. It is simply a regional West Texas accent that is not considered unusual in Texas.

Hey Greg

Dude's from one of the most priveleged families in America, went to Harvard and Yale, and speaks like an ESL student who's just had his tongue injected with novocaine huh?

Riiiiiiight...

Reid is right, of course. Obama suddenly discovers his blaccent when he's speaking in front of them. I remember just days before the election, when it was all but assured, he was wailing like a Southern Baptist preacher talking bout Bush's pol-uh-CEASE.

I'll bet the haole can't speak no pidgin.

He's no African-American either. There's not one drop of former slave blood in his veins. He's a half African, half American. Ironic how blacks apply the "one drop rule" to themselves now.

Marquis

People from all over the U.S. go to Harvard and Yale and from all over the world if they can get in and afford it - is it really that hard for you to wrap your head around?

"most priveleged families in America" - so what? Priveleged families can't come from Texas?

Have u ever heard GWB speak with an un-texas accent? Do you think it's a life long affectation and when he gets home he speaks like William F. Buckley?

Greg from Dallas is right - if you can't connect the Texas dots check out Wiki.

Remember when Carter won the presidency? Southerners came up with the phrase "we don't have accents, you do".

I'm not sure when GW moved to Texas, but to say a Texan is faking his accent is a stretch. I've heard a few Alberta cowboys putting on an accent, to fit in with their buddies on the rodeo circuit.

People used to claim that John Crosby was faking a Newfie accent. He, and many other rich Newfies were educated in Upper Canada, and didn't have strong accents. When they entered politics, they needed to connect with voters, so they put on the hick act.

I have to wonder what Harry meant by "Negro dialect". Seems to me, there are more than a few negro dialects. To me, it just makes him seem like a moron. I've heard he used to be a boxer. You'd think that experience would have broadened his horizons a bit, when it comes to racial diversity. Or, maybe he took too many shots.

Abe Froman

It's all bullshit, but then, look at what entertains the unwashed these days.
=======================================

I don't think you have any idea just how accurate an observation that is.

ET, by your argument above: If Mr. Smith would have shut the heck up, he could've been President like B.O.

Perceived truth in 1939 remains blatantly so...and makes for great cinema. Salve veritate per ardua (saving truth through adversity).

"But of course you all bought GWB"

Tell us, maquis: do you feel SAFER with Maobama as POTUS? Or is his his rank inexperience and unsuitability to the job worrisome, even from you on the left?

Say what you like about GWB, but it'd take a pretty thick skull to not notice that the world's terrorists and rogue states heaved a collective sigh of relief when he left the white house, and obama sauntered in. Even hamas were publicly rooting for O during the nov/08 elections.

Nice support network, eh?

martin b- sorry, but I don't get your point. What are you saying? Sorry - but real life and films aren't comparable.

I'm using a simple analytic frame: plus and minus.

What does Obama NOT have? He has no experience in administration, essentially none in the political realm, no experience in or knowledge of foreign history and realities, no track record as a legal analyst, no track record as an analyst of any field, no knowledge or experience in economics. Nothing. Nothing. Therefore, - why the heck support him for the position of President?

What does he HAVE? An ability to mesmerize and manipulate people. A 'personhood' that is amorphous: not white; not black and thus able to attach himself to either. A coterie surrounding him of hardcore political hacks from Chicago who will do all the dirty work for him and leave him clean as the proverbial whistle.

Oh, and psychologically, he won't get in the way of any backroom plotters and planners because he's a malignant narcissist and his needs and focus are only on himself as Himself. Not on policies and programs.

What's he good for? Being a front man to manipulate people: love from blacks; guilt from whites; hopenchange from the mindless...and thus, get the Democrats in power.

The rest is up to this BackRoom Gang. My point is that Obama was able to get them in power, but he can't get their policies through - and he's, and they, are political disasters in the home front and in foreign affairs.

All you have to ask is 'what would have happened if a republican said it'. It would be in 24-hour news coverage and they would be calling for heads to roll. Right now it's 'lets talk about something else, everything is fine'.
