It's not a profession. It's a tribe.
So, “climate change denial” is widely rumored to have been the last straw. Perhaps sensing the loquacious Newfoundlander would prompt unneeded bad PR if sacked; I’m told [Globe and Mail Editor in Chief John] Stackhouse offered to move him to Mondays. As evidenced by the quick decampment to the National Post, it seems that went over like a tonne of bricks with Murphy.
The move was announced this past Thursday by Peter Mansbridge on CBC’s the National, where Murphy still resides as one of the few opinion columnists left on television.
I was going to write something about how the mainstream media were once in the business of investigating cover-ups, while today they're unindicted co-conspirators, or some other blah-blah-nonsense like that.
But to tell you the truth - that's not entirely correct. The media powers of decades past were just as dedicated to the complete and utter concealment of inconvenient truth as they are today.
Ask yourself - if Nixon had been a Democrat, would East Anglia have a "gate"?
I don't think so, either. The only thing that's really changed is their success at pulling it off - along with their success at selling the product.
I call that progress on two fronts.
(h/t Gord Tulk)

"Ask yourself - if Nixon had been a Democrat, would East Anglia have a "gate"?"
Short answer is "No".
And if Kennedy had been a republican Joe would have been busted for bribing half the state of virginia. And LBJ would have been impeached for bugging Nixon's campaign plane.
BTW I came across the story at NNW.
My question is whether the LPC/left in Canada is the political arm of the media elite, or is the media the communications arm of the LPC/left?
The tail would seem to wag the dog, but which is which?
Yes Kate, agreed 100%.
The BBC, supposedly considered the best in the news business, failed to report to anyone in the 1970's that Mugabe was a thug, even though everyone living in Zimbabwe knew he was.
They failed to do so in the 80's.
They mumbled a few words about it in the 90's.
They reluctantly had to report on it the 2000's, although they would have preferred not to.
Media elite = liars
On November 19, 2009, late in the evening I visited SDA and was shocked to find out about the e-mails hacked (although I believe it was a whistleblower) from the Hadley CRU. What an amazing development, of which I thought that there is no way the MSM could ignore this one and said this as a fact to my colleague (another climate denier) as we took a taxi to the airport the next day. Well I waited and waited and waited and waited for the Calgary Herald to report on this. Meanwhile they continued to report AGW-supporting stories almost daily as a leadup to Copenhagen. Finally on November 25, I called and cancelled the Herald and gave them the reason why. To her credit, the woman who took my call sent it upstairs, and I got a return call from another woman there asking me to elaborate on my complaint. She was relatively unaware of the Climategate file and perused her computer for information while we spoke. She found that they would be placing a story the very next day, and I told her that it may have won them a reprieve. Well, I did not learn a single thing from that story that I did not know after the 19th, as this story was still focused on the e-mails and not the file attachements. They had 8 - 9 days to work on it from when it broke and by the time the story was written. Meanwhile, SDA and Watts Up With That were getting into more relevant topics like the Harry.ReadMe file, for example. The Herald has stayed cancelled.
Rex is the ONLY thing that comes out of the CBC I will watch.
This may explain why Andrew coyne hedged when he wrote about climategate.
John ...don't call yourself a denier. That's the name tagged by the left to belittle(reference to holocaust denial) those of us that are not drinking the Gore-Suzuki koolaid.
I refer to myself as AGW skeptic.
grok...moi aussi. And Cross Country Checkup is fun .
Rex may lean a bit to the right but he is definitely non-partisan. I've heard him graciously diss the CPC on some points.Libs and Dippers just give him so much fodder. When he gets the boot from CBC will the government then notice CBC viewership rating is even further in the basement?
Someone provide a link to Coren's show with Goldstein. Catch it. Very revealing wrt inside the media 'tribe'.
Can there be any doubt left that the Globe and Pail is a leftwing rag? Rex is one of the few respected journalist left in Canada thus the poltiical left will try and destroy him. We are in a battle for our freedoms, the screechy left send emails and complain complain unlike us right wingers who expect to go through life with dissenting opinions.
John, I too was waiting for the Herald or CTV to say something about the Climategate story but nothing and like you said they kept pumping the Copenhagen meeting of crooks and no-brains like it was the most important issue of the century. I will not watch CTV Calgary anymore. I hope they both go broke.
John,
My experience after the climategate story broke was almost identical to yours. I waited and waited, I thought there was no way they could ignore this, it is just too big. Truly amazing. Nobody who only relies on regular media now can possibly be fully informed - they only get one side of the story (and that is being kind).
I stopped waiting for the Wpg Free Press in 1985.
Naw, they got rid of him because he dares to see Barack Obama's feet of clay.
I wouldn't call Rex right-wing - more of a general iconoclast.
CBC has shown "An Inconvienent Truth" (CBC NewsWorld), "Sicko" and the "911 Conspiracy Theories" (The Passionate Eye and The Current) recently.
No bias here, move along folks.......
Rescue Rex, put him in the Senate, let the Liberals lose control of their bowels.
Rescue Rex, put him in the Senate, let the Liberals lose control of their bowels. Along with Don Cherry, now that would be explosive.
There are so few reasons to read the Globe - and one of them has just left. If only I could get the National Post as readily as I can the Globe.
But I am a bit of a behaviouralist. I wonder what causes these guys to behave in this manner? Why do they ignore or suppress opposing views? What is their benefit? In the Climategate instance they do not report the whistle blowing. They do not report the content of the e-mails. They do not report the comments in the coding. What are the rewards they get from that behaviour?
Clearly they are not selling more papers or more advertising on the television. Just as clearly there is an audience they are not serving and you would expect customer driven profit oriented businesses to try to serve that audience.
It just baffles me.
Call me stupid (there's an invitation for someone), but I really didn't think they could ignore Climategate. I was astonished to be frank. How could such a juicy scandal not inspire a newpaper? Scandal is their bread and butter seems to me. I do give credit to the Boston Globe for running it early on. Yet after their initial article the blanket was thrown over the editor.
Businessmen they clearly are not.
I thought the new low was set by CNN when they did 24hr non-stop coverage of Michael Jackson for a month. Fortunately, they will go out of business eventually.
Great comment Liz J.
honestly , i saw rex on cbc doing his commentating and he chose a few e-mails ,and read few comments ...and the ones he read and the ones he chose were all daming of the truth he seems to be drinking the leftist coolaid these day's i certainly would not say he is right leaning ...posssibly a centrist..i was not happy with his oratory with peter mansbridge he sided with him and was non argumentative and did not stand up for the truth .....but that is my opinion .
Paul in calgary
CNN?
Does anybody watch that anymore?
It lost it's relevance years ago. It used to be a news network, but now, well.....a cheerleading squad for BamBam, it is like MSNBC lite.....
On another note, Rex ol' boy was quite the "bro with the fro" in is younger days.....wow
Cbc's 'the nature of things' is airing a story on the Inuit. A very interesting story that is ruined by the constant 'global warming' BS spewed by the narrator some fella named Suzuki. It is mentioned that thousands of year ago there was a 'thriving' community that farmed during an earlier 'global warming' period.UH,hold on,what was that...oh,never mind, back to the future where us earthlings are killing their way of life.
Canwest Global now has all their papers but the Post in Bankruptcy protection, We need to get back to press baron ownership like the Siftons and even Conrad Black. At least he told it like it is and left his editors and publishers to do their job. Let's hope that CanWest's impending divestuture will restore some variety to news reporting ande refocus them on their job.
Stopped watching CBC during the Cretien yeears.
CBC's investigative program 'The Fifth Estate' could put together an excellent program on Climategate,if they only had a backbone. At least three Canadians figure prominently ,McIntyre,McCormick, and SDA's own,Lance. Possibly ,they have already started one,but I doubt it.It's too bad that Mulroney,or even Harper couldn't be linked to a GW payoff somewhere, then they could do the job we pay them to do,and still sleep at night.

I also enjoy Rex Murphy - my,that man can speak in many syllabled words!! But I also watch Coronation Street on CBC - courtesy or my mother when she came to live with me. Of course, should CBC lose its funding, I would hope that another station would pick up Cory Nation. Perhaps Bravo??
What seems baffling to me is the self sabatoging of the MSM. There are so many "increase your readership stories" available they should be out headlining each other to break the next detail.
I do enjoy Rex though because there has never been such a high profile Newfoundlander ,nay Canadian with such beautiful language skills. Though I may need a dictionary to truly appreciate his words it is impressive nd fun.
I far prefer the National Post to the Globe and Mail, and I much prefer Rex Murphy to Peter Mansbridge. Rex's moving to the NP is fine with me. I hope it works for him.
Like Liz J., I'd love to see Murphy appointed to the Senate. Boy, the verbal fireworks would be a-poppin' and a-sizzlin'!
I emailed the Globe on Nov 24th and asked why no story on Climategate. In fact I threatened to cancel my subscription. A week later there was still no story, so I cancelled. The best part of the Globe is their Bridge column which I get from the office copy of the paper. Don't know what I will do when I retire. Here's what I wrote on Nov 24th.
I am appalled that the Globe has not seen fit to report on this story other than a few paragraphs in last Saturday's edition. The story is everywhere on the net. The fact that the world is not warming like the IPCC said it would is major news. Report it Globe and Mail or else I will be forced to cancel my subscription.
Rex will do fine and possibly bring the "bailout "Aspers around to seeing what sells papers, and it isn't left wing crap, just look at Fox compared to the rest! We are tired of WOLF WOLF! , and that is all the MSM is anymore, from GLOBULL warming to Y2K and on and on. Give us the truth, is that so f..king hard! Grope and Fail/CBC/Global with your stern lecturing Kevin and Brienne/ and last CTV and your Count Floyd and Iggys pissboy FIFE, GIVE IT UP! we don't believe it. Only you losers are stupid enough to believe in globull warming, need I go on.
Bartinksy:
I'm waiting for CTV to present "Count Floyd's 3-D House of Global Warming" on Monster Chiller Horror Theatre.
It's scary, kids, veeerrrry scary. So be sure to send Count Floyd $19.95 for your 3-D glasses.
Starring Dr. Tongue and Bruno, of course.
Good for Rex. Hope he does well there and helps the Post's bottom line.
I was wondering what is up this morning when I read his article in the Post.
MSM doesn't surprise me. I'm getting more impatient with the politicians in general CPC in particular. Are they relieved that MSM is not covering the CRU release? If they are waiting , what does that tell you about the tail wagging the dog, folks?
bluetech: " ... what does that tell you about the tail wagging the dog, folks?"
That the tail is, indeed, wagging the dog, bluetech!
;-(

Kate, Kathy, Ezra, mark Steyn. The news blogs & aggregates. Thats the real news today.
TV with the traditional press is so infected with Socialism& crony-ism that it has become a new Iron wall towards fact with reality.
Journalism schools have indoctrinated so many I don't think they will recover for generations.
Frankly I don't miss TV news or the papers. Too many lies over to many years.
Government positions in the Senate or other offices have also corrupted them for many years.
The Liberals by bribery have shorn the Canadian press from any truth telling into political
fantasy. For political masters.
JMO
Idiots. You don't need to agree with a word Rex Newfie writes to see that he's one of the only interesting mainstream journalists in the country. Plus, he's a beloved National Treasure and such.
Is there anyone here who knows how to run a newspaper!?
(The Post isn't much better; those guys failed to hang on to Christie Blatchford.)
Margaret Wente of the Globe and Mail was the first at that paper to write anything on Climategate. Perhaps she will be next to go. I just went to the Globe and can't find anything by Margaret. I was going to post a link to her article. You can't find anything by Murphy there either.
I just found the article by MW, strange there was no index of columnists names.

It's not a profession. It's a tribe.
Thankfully there’s some inter-tribe mobility available to the smart ones like Stossel (CNN to FOX) and Murphy.
If Canada had a TV news alternative to CBC/CTV, we might find that the Liberal Party tent is not as large as it appears. In other words we might find that the majority of Canadians actually have personal values that are at odds with the LPCs true (but hidden) agenda.
Conan may find door open at Fox if he bolts NBC
Another potential migration?
Don't know much about Conan but I'm confident FOX knows what they're doing.
I don't take anyone seriously who appears on CBC, CTV or the Globe & Mail. If Rex Murphy has morphed into the defender of truthfulness and logic in Canadian society we are in more trouble than I thought. The man is the consumate brown noser and Newfy welfare cheque casher. Really listen to what he says and more importantly what he does. His methods of influencing the transition to a socialist society is simply more sophisticated than the other fools of his ilk.
Finally, Rex is where he belongs.
Let's hope with his inclusion/influence and increased readership, the Post will see brighter days ahead.
And best of all, the good ol' boys at the local trucker/farmer/blue collar coffeeshop down at the edge of town, will stop lookin at me funny when I'm askin if there's a copy of the Globe around.
...
Just so I could read Rex!
...
Honest!
Let's be honest here..Rex Murphy has a vast cerebral
expansion that only Peter Mansbridge could hope for..I am sure every evening after Peter returns home to his condo full of mirrors that he has his dictionary out trying to find out the meanings of the words used by Rex...
One thing to remember folks...if you die and you wake up surrounded by lefties, leberals, etc ...you know you are in hell...
Forget this phony left-right partisanism where corporate media are concerned. Corporate media is tied into the UN globalist governing agenda at the ownership level. The owners hire editors who will espouse the world-state (global village) fabian dogma. They fancy themselves as part of the global elite who are ushering in a new progressivist transnational "order". This Globalist order needs mass media propagandists to hide its iron fist under a media-created velvet glove. This new global order (centered in Brussels and the UN) demands uniformity of ideology and agenda and seeks to squelch dissent.
There is no 'balance' in corporate media output - just token "stray opinions" like Murphy's to give the illusion of balance.
There is a reason The corporate media were so vehemently pimping the junk science and opinion censorship tyranny of the AGW IPCC. It has nothing to do with being "left". It has everything to do with corporate media ownership being networked 'globalists'.
Perhaps Murphy could do with a long chat with Lord Monkton in trying to make sense of the systemic purging of his "stray opinions" from Corporate media.
Um Mike L, that's actually how I feel reality already is - lying lefties, lying fiberals, lying opinion makers and lying policy makers.
Big Journalism is running a series on how the MSM has covered climategate. Well worth reading.

It's telling to think that the G&M is now on par with the Georgia Strait. The Watermelon Press.
"I wonder what causes these guys to behave in this manner? Why do they ignore or suppress opposing views? What is their benefit?"
Money, money, money - as in: if I print this the lefty owners will fire me; if I print this, advertisers will pull their ads; if I print this I'll lose subscribers.
Cut the cable 3 years ago... nothing but garbage and half-truths on the news side, and brain-sucking, advertising filled sludge as filler. Where's Nero?
