The seals are merely an appatizer...

The most important part of a balanced diet is the Aussie Surfer!

I suggested that they shoot the seal in a comment on this story and there were protests and my comment was withdrawn. The protesters said my post offended them.

The 180 back flip, while scarfing down the that sardine eater was bodacious Bro!

And that was some gnarly air you got there at the 2:27 mark Dude!

Where'd the hippies go?

"I suggested that they shoot the seal in a comment on this story and there were protests and my comment was withdrawn. The protesters said my post offended them."

"Withdrawn" and "deleted" are not the same thing. "Withdrawn" implies that *you*, yourself removed it.

If I say that Bugs Bunny is a racist characterization of rabbits in North America but decide later that my statement was wrong and remove it myself (or was forced to remove the statement by, say, Kate), then that could be me doing a "withdraw".

If Kate just removed my comment, that would be deletion, but not censorship, as this is a private form of communication hosted by Kate.

Does this make sense?

I know that Kate does have to delete posts from time-to-time, but we're using her server and time, so it's fair to delete spam from clogging the discussion.

I'm guessing that your comment wasn't clogging discussion on a widely-known newspaper website that welcomes comments from its readership.

It's all George Bush's fault. Republican disrespect for Gaia has caused fish to turn on their aquatic brothers. In the words of President Obama, "Let them eat kelp!"

The poor innocent cuddly little seal was off to go do its own eating of smaller critters.

I dive a lot, and I'm always amazed at how everything eats everything else underwater; indeed throughout nature.

Eat that Vegans and Jains!

...... I'm gonna need a bigger fly rod ...... and a good seal pattern .

Unfortunately, the last 2 attacks with the sharks going airborn were on faux fabric seals that are placed in order to trigger an attack for the camera, and not live seals at all.

and were is Paul McCartney just when you need him

There it is in bold faced type, Kate has anounced she has exposed two (2)!! indentifiable groups to hatred and contempt.

Now I ask you where is the CHRC on shark and seal hatred!?! We need an inquiry on shark and seal hatred...

Man talk about putting your foot into it...

NO, NO, NO, not JAWS III!!!

I see many lawyers circling round, ready to litigate for the kill...

Ahh, hang it all I forgot it is the C HUMAN RC.

But I bet there is some Canadian Shark & Seals Rights Commission.

Your lucky Kate that was pretty close for comfort.

Cheers

I'll worry about the hooks , where can I buy these faux seals ?

Seal Depot

Please remember you don't have to actually hate anything to be run a-foul the HRC's....just present the possibility of offending somebody, anybody.........other than a white male.

Nice try, but missed it by a long shot.

This film is from the BBC DVD series Planet Earth. They explained how they got the footage for this part of the series; it's really quite fascinating. It's been over a year since I watched the whole thing so I hope I have the precise details correct.

They were aware of the difficulty in capturing this type of shark attack. The strike happens so quickly that a cameraman simply would not be able to swing the camera around in time to capture the event.

Therefore, they used a special camera. This camera has some type of RAM that is continually being overwritten by the camera and there is a lag time associated with it. If I remember correctly, the lag time is 1.5 seconds. When the cameraman sees the strike happen, he presses the button and the cammera records 3.0 seconds to disk - the 1.5 seconds stored in RAM before the button is pushed plus 1.5 seconds after. The camera also has the capability of playback at a 40:1 ratio. For this footage, they did not take advantage of the full 40:1 ratio. Had they done that, it would take 120 seconds to replay each of the strikes.

This camera capability and not the cameraman's swiftness is the reason that the footage shows the sea before the strike happens - that is in the 1.5 second part.

The commenter's skepticism is understandable: to capture such a fast strike on camera is next to impossible if the cameraman must find the strike and then swing the camera. The camera crew simply pointed it at a random space on the sea and waited for the strike to happen within camera view and then pushed the button. I think it took several days just to get the few action scenes that they have.

pkuster refers to a Youtube video on a pod of orcas going after a crab-eater seal. The orcas are amazing.

Dunno I'm impressed by sharks, but I'm awed by Orca's.

An Orca pod makes Great Whites, literally, run away and find a more congenial stretch of ocean.

They are marine equivalent of a German Panzer Division in France 1940. Their prey only gets away when the Orca have better things to do.

"Well", as a Great White told me over a friendly beer, "It's nice to be top of our respective food chains, isn't it?".

Then I had to warn him about Brigitte Bardot.

I also agree with the comments on the Orcas.

There was a video floating around a few years ago, of an Orca killing a Greta White Shark. I think it was filmed by someone on a cruise ship. It was brutal, and quick, and I couldn't help cheering. I hate sharks. I was conned into scuba diving a few times, and the thought of being eaten by something so cold blooded was unpleasant. I could accept being eaten by a bear, or a lion, but a fish? That's wrong.

never mind the metabolism of the great white...ponder on the metabolism of the blue fin tuna...a warm blooded fish!....must swim continually to breathe....reaches a ton or more...migrates constantly from the gulf of mexico to iceland and back with a brain the size of a pea....also the highest price sushi japan buys...seen them swimming at 30 knots or more they tell me while chasing flying fish...they can retract their dorsal and other fins for greater speed...

Now that's worst than a Newfie with a seal club! Love that guys's accent!!

"...an Orca killing a Greta White Shark."

ehh... ok, that is pretty cool, but seeing one eat a polar bear would be totally epic!

Orcas use a "karate chop" to kill and eat sharks.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1231454/Killer-whales-Death-karate-chop-deadly-tactic-used-orcas-sharks.html

I know seals are cod killers, but I'll take the side of mammals over fish.
That said, I'm in favour of seal hunting done by people.

DAMN good thing those phuckers didn't / don't have LEGS or WE'D still be wee furry thangs hiding waaay up in the trees!

Those great whites are in South Africa, eating Cape Fur Seals in False Bay on the East side of Cape of Good Hope. They ate a swimmer five days ago, just off the beach at Fish Hoek. Beautiful beach, wonderful surf: unfortunately also sharks this time of year.

Is this some type of preemptive post to the seal protests organized against the upcoming Canadian Winter Olympics? Plenty of international ebmarrassment potential there.

Those who forget how the food chain functions are destined to become to become food for others.

Oh, Oh, forgot to read before posting!

ChrisinMB- I wonder if polar bears are ever attacked at sea? You'd think an Orca could take one down, but maybe the risk of injury is too great.

I notice seals come up here occasionally. Are they a regular part of life where you live? Why do you hate them?

Don't hate sharks. Look at that power and admire them.

Ummmmmmm...guys...Orcas and polar bears do not live in the same habitat.....sorta like the Coke, polar bear, penguin ads.It doesn't happen.
Although I am not dis-agreeing that it would be an intersting fight,4000 lb whale with big teeth and hitting power against 2000 lbs of really big teeth and claws.

It'd be nice to have consistency about public broadcasting from conservatives in Canada.

We laud and enjoy the BBC's Planet Earth (because we don't have to pay for it) but loathe CBC's equivalent. How much money do you think it costs to make a camera that takes 1000 frames per second in full HD? (Special features on Planet Earth say: camera can only save 5 seconds at a time)

Just interesting dissonance.

Polishing my seal beater as we type.
Can't wait till the season opens up. Nothing like a crisp winter morning walk, cracking seal noggin. Brains on the ice, blood on your boots.
This is how Canadians should be viewed with this proud tradition world wide. Scenes of happy children eating fresh blubber, like candy. Folks in a party mood. Lots to eat. Proud men with Women Holding up their beating poles with pride.
I love how this drives the Marxists & Eco-freaks nuts. Nice to see the natives stick up for their traditions against the self righteous morons.

ChrisinMB: there's a video of polar bears killing whales (belugas).

Justthinkin: there are indeed northern waters where orcas and polar bears co-exist.

http://www.cms.int/reports/small_cetaceans/data/o_orca/orcinus_orca_lg.jpg

I saw a clip about Ursus marinus (Polar Bear) attacking Walrus.....on ice or land the bear usually wins----despite the Walrus advantage in size and weight.....
However, if the bear follows a wounded Bull Walrus into the water----the bear is toast....not pretty.

sf...thanks! I didn't know that.Learn something new every day.

I thought David Attenborough was persona non grata amongst the right wing for his strident environmentalism.

I don't hate sharks; exact opposite. I admire . . . . *envy* their power and efficient design for the task they fulfill.

it's the sharks at 'head office' I detest.

I'm just sayin' (they had my son's stuff and protected it if ya know what I mean, yo, dudes).

I was a bit worried but whoever had the Ferrari said, hey, that boy with the stuff - check that out. I may be misremembering, but the guy sounded like well you know.

Have you ever seen/heard a V8 convertible?

Paul

Nice try, Brent, but it appears that my aim is the truer.

Please explain how the shark managed to suck the entire contents of the seal's skin out of it as it clears the water at 1:37 - 1:43, because, clearly, your hapless "seal" has taken on the limp flatness of roadkill.

Please also explain how your prescient camera, pointing at some random expanse of sea managed to detect the shark prior to breaking the surface at 2:09. Did the camera system use sonar, and then instantaneously spin the camera around before the shark broke the surface?

Nice try, but I, too, have seen how such shots are captured. A flat, neoprene seal silhouette floating on the surface.

Thank you for playing. Come back soon.

Hey, Vitruvius, can our DJ spin "Fake Plastic Seals" by Radiohead for us? Wait, I'd better doublecheck that title...

PiperPaul @9:10PM - who's the guy doing Richard Dreyfuss, do you know? (And SNL had a first season, already. Hard to compute.)
