Paul Shirley's take on the Haiti situation.
While I don't necessarily agree with everything he wrote, I do think he raises some relevant points.
The blog post cost him his job at espn.com; he posted a clarification but not an apology to the (mostly nasty) comments he received.
The Liberals are now slightly ahead of the Conservatives in the latest polls. Was it a good idea to prorogue parliament when Mr. Harper was hovering at 41%, 11% higher than he is today?? Would love your views on that!!
I will still be voting conservative ...it really doesn't bother me that harper prorouged govornment for the olympics.....i think it is a your damed if you do and your damed if you don't..type of situation liberal are clawing at anything to try to get power again...so they can corrupt somore and push there socialist, marxist, nanny state govornment.
Ohh yeah just so you libtards know harper is still working in his office ..it is not like he is traveling the world like iggy and the rest of the liberano's .
Paul in calgary.
Joe @ 11:50 - personally, I think that Harper's government should have said "we didn't torture anyone and we turned them over to the people/country who sired them. If you feel sorry for murdering terrorists, then simply vote for someone other than me/us in the next election".
He would have been more respected by those of us who vote that way and some on the fence. The rest would never vote for him anyway.
Proroguing in this case is tantamount to not answering the phone during a time of heavy telemarketer solicitation.
Proroguing doesn't bother me in the least. Harper's complete lack of defined principles does. Hey, if I don't like his principles, he has new ones! Just like the Lieberals!
There's now NOBODY I want to vote for federally, and I find that very deeply disturbing considering I'm 50 and have nt only voted in every election I have been eligible to do so, but have actually run for office.
At this point, though, I believe they are ALL lying selfish bastards.
So how, tell me, do we as Canadians regain control of our federal government? Provincial government? Civic government?
Do we need to start considering taking up arms, or do we just sit by while the SOBs destroy our country?
Wow-djb- destroying our country????? In almost every sector Canada is getting glowing accolades from the rest of the world for how we are doing during this world wide recession.
You're pretty hard to please. What exactly are you missing out on in this fabulous land that Conservatives have taken from you?
"I will still be voting conservative ...it really doesn't bother me that harper prorouged govornment for the olympics"
Lots of people will still be voting Conservative. The whole thing about the proroguing issue is that none of those people voted Conservative last time -- it was all NDP, Green, or Liberal. I'll wait to see where the polls go next. And of course, there is only one that really counts.
I'm not the most anti-Harper conservative in the land, but I would say this -- if he's going to become the saviour of the poor and downtrodden of the world, and steal back his lost votes from the Liberals, he might do well to take care of the base first and get Section 13 off our backs.
Then he might find his support base more enthusiastic about his other efforts.
The Lennikov case continues to drain support needlessly too, if we're going to be humane to people who don't even live in Canada, why be inhumane to a family who want to live, work and contribute to Canada? It makes no sense to me that the government leaves no-brainer issues like this unresolved and draining their support in swing ridings.
This government does a lot of big things well and a few small things very poorly; I think they need just one or two more voices at the round table, perhaps voices that have some connection to the average person, because sometimes this government seems too abstract and remote. Of course they are a far better alternative, but they seem to squander their capital on issues that are small and easy to resolve.
On the positive side, I like the more direct talk about economic consequences of climate change fantasy legislation. People are ready for that and it will cut the ground out from under the deluded opposition parties. Perhaps it will help Gordon Campbell do a rethink as well, because we are getting taxed for this fantasy big-time in BC.
Memo to all posters. There is no election now. Who cares about the polls. During a political lull you could exchange all the liberal mps with brass monkeys and 30% of Canadians would say that they would vote liberal. When those same Canadians actually have to look at the parties/candidates during an election....

I dunno if I'm bitching about the right wordage, but the use of the terms "asshat" and "douchebag" as adjectives implies to me that some critics are more familiar with newly-created, vague insults than they are with the true beauty that can be used in the English language.
Then again, some use of TEL is so bad that in 50 years it'll be a series of grunts, barf-sounds and directed eye-rolls. Gnome Sane?
Oh, the ironing is delicious (damn you, Alanis Morissette!).

ScienceDaily (Jan. 28, 2010) — A new estimate of the feedback between temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration has been derived from a comprehensive comparison of temperature and CO2 records spanning the past millennium.
The result, which is based on more than 200,000 individual comparisons, implies that the amplification of current global warming by carbon-cycle feedback will be significantly less than recent work has suggested.
If you people posting here have dreams about Gillies and the Blocheads (separtistas) running the government of Canada, then support Egghead and Jacko and the Dippers - squawk about the 'taking back the democracy' (tea party talking points btw - are all of you tuned into Glenn Beck, if so why don't you learn some history?) -be careful for what you squawk about - you just might get what you wish for. My dad used to say that most people who squawk without any real (emphasis on real since governments have been proroguing parliament, in Canada since 1867; no I am not making that up, check it out for yourselves)reason are fools, that is what my Dad used to say..
Most sane people like our honest, intelligent Prime Minister - look what they have in the USA!- we really don't give a rip about the Troika asking questions on live TV slandering the soldiers in Afghanistan nor do we want to listen to the flatulent Boob Ray belch and puff up like a Puffin when he relaxes. If the Prime Minister had not renewed the legislative agenda, he could not have appointed the new senators..appointed because the Premiers of some provinces do not trust the people of their provinces to elect a senator. I have suggested that Sask. and/or Alberta could elect the senators for the backward provinces; if I were PM I do that. Then the Premiers of the backward provinces would be in trouble...just a thought...
I doubt that 2 out of ten people in provinces outside of Quebec want to elect Guilles Duceppe as Prime Minister but I have been wrong before...
One thing for sure - the Troika is alive and the conditions struck by Green Stick and his pals in the Dipper/Blochead pact remain unchanged - the Blocheads will run the show even though they do it behind the stage; puppeteer is the word I am searching for, it is a descriptive noun for Gillies in this case.
As for me and my house, we will be backing the good guys, not the Troika.

Re: the Canadian political situation:
Yes, it is a given (IMHO) that most all politicians are lying thieves. Some are worse than others, though. It is my belief that it always best to deal with the lesser of multiple evils (hey, you don't have any other realistic choice but "evil" in Canadian politics).
I have sat patiently waiting while the Conservatives battle their way along with a minority situation in the House and lack of control in the Senate. I have patiently urged other folks to wait, wait, wait for the Conservatives to get a majority before they start to "turn the ship around".
By proroguing parliament, Harper is now able to appoint 5 senators and take control of the Senate. I think the time for excusing the lack of conservative action from the CPC is now over.
OPEN MESSAGE TO THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY OF CANADA:
When the House reconvenes, it will be time to "put up or shut up". Your supporters' collective patience has just about run out. You MUST start to do something to re-energize your base and start turning Canada away from ever-increasing socialism. You must do AT LEAST one of the following:
- move to abolish the Senate
- move to severely curtail and/or abolish the CHRC
- cancel the gun registry
- lower taxes
- cut the size of the federal government (though you risk sabotage by bureaucrats)
- other conservative measures
And for God' sake...drop the politically-correct BS spewing and "say it like it is" about SOMETHING. I believe that ordinary Canadians want to hear some HONESTY and SOUND REASONING from their government and PM (not to say that the PM hasn't spoken honestly and with sound reasoning in the past...just not enough or to a wide-enough audience or about an important enough subject).
The throne speech after the (hopefully successful) Olympics will be a PERFECT venue to speak the clear, honest TRUTH.
Time to put out (to your conservative base) or get out.
Now, if Kate / Kathy / EBD / et al could put meat (and gravy!) on that general message and get this type of message slammed onto the PM's desk, we will have taken away their (the CPC's) last excuse for inaction.
PM Harper: A Canadian Statesman.
...-
"A statesman debuts in Davos as Harper defines his global doctrine"
"He called for governments to temper their short-term national interests by shaping them to the global good, preaching a mantra of "enlightened sovereignty" that would see nations act in common interest because they will otherwise face a share of the global damage. And he lectured leaders of the G20, the broad group that has replaced the G8 as the world's economic steering committee, that some are risking that common interest by erecting barriers to trade and - in an oblique shot at China - manipulating their currency.
It was, for Mr. Harper, a first major attempt at defining a doctrine for how the world should work, in advance of the summits, insisting that leaders will have to focus on how nations deliver on their past promises.
"The discussion should be less about new agreements than accountability for existing ones. Less about narrow self-interest in sovereignty's name, than an expanded view of mutual interest, in which there is room for all to grow and prosper," he said.
"Enlightened sovereignty, then, the natural expression of natural self-interest.""

Climategate AGW Fraud hits the MSM.

"HOW CLIMATEGATE BOSS BROKE RULES BY HIDING KEY DATA(sic)
Professor Phil Jones held on to key data
A CONTROVERSIAL climate change scientist at a top university faced mounting calls for his resignation last night after it emerged he breached rules by withholding research data from critics.
Professor Phil Jones, director of University of East Anglia’s climatic research unit – funded by £13million in grants – colluded with colleagues to block freedom of information applications for details of his activities, the Deputy Information Commissioner Graham Smith found.
Emails begging other scientists to help him fight off the applications showed the requests were “not dealt with as they should have been”, Mr Smith said.
The university could have faced an unlimited fine for the breaches but escaped because of a loophole. More than six months had passed since the offences happened and there is a time limit on penalties.
As resignation calls mounted the university last night refused to back Professor Jones saying it was waiting for an independent review to be finalised. The professor has temporarily stepped aside as head of the unit pending the result of that review.
The Climatic Research Unit has received grants worth £13.7million over 20 years from public bodies including the Environment department and the Met Office."

Driving home I heard a bit about PM Harper's speech in Switzerland last night on CBC radio. The point that he told the G-20 to get their act together was barely mentioned. Instead we have the climate change drivel about only green cars with a sticker can drive in that town and how the koolade drinking Euros were disgusted that Canada was not leaping on the goreacle band wagon.
As far as Canadians being upset over proroguing, most have never heard of the "legal" procedure nor how it has been used many times before, but, driven by the MSM faux outrage, they are willing to be lead to the edge of the cliff like good lemmings.
PM Harper and the Tories also cannot act on many of their platform points until the Senate is more balanced. Until then the Lieberal senate majority will continue to block anything coming. Like the bill unanimously passed by the HofC but the Senate has decided to "review" this. Even a minority government can get reasonable legislation through the house, but if it gets stalled by partisan politics then it is all for naught.
"Canadians Like Tories Response to Haiti: Poll
A majority of Canadians applaud the minority Conservative Government’s response to the earthquake in Haiti.
A Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey found 71 per cent of respondents ranked the Federal Government’s actions as good or excellent.
Just five per cent said the government’s response has been poor.
Self-identified Liberal voters, NDP and Bloc Quebecois supporters all gave the government good or excellent grades on the relief effort."

Liberal Justice!!!
From what I can understand about the reasons for proroguing, it was not about evading the Afghan detainee questions but about the Senate.
The Senate, an appointed house, is dominated by Liberals and has been holding up, changing, watering down, denying House bills for some time. The socialist majority in the House (Liberals, NDP, Bloc) have made it impossible for Harper to change the Senate to an elected house.
The proroguing period is enabling him to appoint new members of the Senate, to move it to a Conservative focus. These new members also agree to abide by an elected and term-limit ruling, if such can be achieved.
As for the Afghan detainee situation, this is unsolvable for it involves actions done not by the Canadian military but the Afghans who took over the prisoners. As such, desriptions of reality and verification of those descriptions are out of reach.
The opposition in the House are focused on campaign style smears - eg, 'wafergate - and not on governing the country.
A further note is how Harper is emerging on the world stage as a key leader of viable and constructive actions.
Last month Conservative MP Phil Coleman (Brant, Ontario) received unanimous support in the House of Commons for a private members motion naming 2010 "Year of the British Home Child".
Between the 1870's and 1940's over 100,000 British orphans were brought to Canada (to fill a void for farm labour)...it is estimated 3 to 4 million Canadians are descendants of former Home children. The story here:

Good news to start the day. Sweet little Omar won't be coming back soon.---http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2010/01/29/omar-khadr-supreme-court.html
Problem is though ET is the driveby smears by the Opposition with the help of Canada's MSM is swaying the electorates opinion's of the PM & Govt.
And have we seen a bombardment of articles or aculades on the Great Job the PM & Govt have done in the wake of a major crisis(Haiti)? No, very limited.
The daily assault continues over the prorogue. Why? because the Socialist Left/MSM have been waiting for a break to ramp up the assault on Harper.
Now that said PM Harper has achieved a very important Up on the Opposition, He now with the New Senate appointments has an upper hand in the Senate & Committee's one that will allow the Govt's Crime Bills & other's to achieve approval & the conservatives gain a majority control of these Kangaroo Court committee's. On another point, I can also understand the Govt's reluctance to retaliate because they are concentrating on the Haiti Relief.
And also, Why? has the Media not pointed out that the House would only have sat 2wks Tops because they would have been adjourning for the Olympics anyways! Why? And why have the actual cost of sitting for those 2wks compared to the cost of not sitting not been pointed out.
I think we would be amazed to find out that the cost of sitting for 2wks would outway the actual cost of proroguing.
No like i have said i do think that the PM realized that there would be a backlash, And they did outway the cost. But for an unforseen event would be retaliating But are Not going to Sink to the Lowball drivebys the Media & Opposition have done.
And like i said in prior post i do think an Election is going to come after the Budget, Even though we see in today's Media Ignatieff is saying No Election! He made that mistake once already he is not going to show his hand this time. And that goes for a Coalition also. There will be a Coalition of the Left After an election & we will be stuck with them for 5yrs.
* i dunno maybe iam getting a bit paronoid watching the history channel's Nostradamus.
Well, there you have it, you AGW deniers:
Bin Laden on global warming
Al Jazeera has received another purported audio tape from al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, in which he calls for the international community to boycott the U.S. dollar to "free humankind from slavery" and commented, "Speaking about climate change is not a matter of intellectual luxury -- the phenomenon is an actual fact"... The tape comes after one earlier this week in which bin Laden praised the failed Christmas Day bombing attempt.
Just heard about the new senate appointments... not a musician, artist, journalist or hockey player among the lot. go figure, eh.
MSM commentators for the most part are missing a vital sign in the latest federal political polling numbers: the drop in Harper's support signifies that Harper's own conservative base is getting increasingly bored and turned off by his repeated failure to bring any remotely conservative legislation to fruition. There is also disappointment with his embrace of the whole global warming nonsense and his pervasive insistence that this country can borrow its way into prosperity.
The current polling numbers are not unusual; they fall within a range that hasn't changed much during Harper's whole term in office. His numbers will probably rebound in the next few weeks, but probably not enough to put him in majority government territory.
As for the Liberals, if they want to win an election (and it would be a minority government) they need to come up with several policy pronouncements that clearly offer a positive alternative to the Tories and clearly differentiate themselves from Harper. So far, Iggy is not doing that and shows no indication that he is capable of it. Merely criticizing current government actions is not enough to create favourable momentum.
Bin Laden supports the AGW theory?
Better sign on then. Otherwise, he'll get very, very angwy.

I have very vogue idea what "enlightened sovereignty" could mean. What I know is that present Canadian regulation are incompatible with technological progress namely Internet. It is just as silly as ironic -that because of CRTC - when you try to open a video it says: " In Canada you can watch on Comedy Network" ; because of import regulation many American on-line retailers do not ship to Canada; because of regulation by individual government agencies you can not import certain items or quantities.
Mr. Harper, nice speech, however Canadian border is protectionist as ever been.
Eeyore - I usually agree with your posts, but not this one, not at all, not one bit.
If the CPC were to do that, the right wing would spend the next 50 years out in the wilderness eating locusts and honey.
Patience, patience. We are doing well as a country, and incrementally a lot of good things are happening.
bryanr - the CBC will hate Harper and any CPC govt until the end of time. It's unfair, and we can squawk to the ombudsman, but nothing will change. Partially because we aren't "making" conservatives anymore.
Erik with no direspect, i said the MSM which is more then just the CBC. And yes you are correct the CBC will hate Harper & conservatives to the end of time
And besides the only thing left on the CBC is Coronation St. & HnCanada & They almost screwed those up. Give it a few more yrs CBC will be toast when analogue tv is finished in Canada.

Iam talking away to the dude & had to repeat several times iam sorry i did not quite understand what you said.

Ok so i have come to hate Bell Canada for hiring Technical Support call centre's in India when we have ample companies in Canada! And i have written to them complaining which i might add never ever gotten a reply, But the TD Bank!! what the F*** I would expect a Canadian Bank to have atleast a Canadian Call Centre..
Why would a Canadian Bank be out sourcing work & to people inanother country when we have so many Canadians out of work? And escpecially those same Canadians that Deposit there UI cheques or Paychecks in their bank? Have their mortagages or loans with TD, How many other Canadian banks are doing this?
So where is Jack Layton Now? he is so against Canadian Banks why have we not heard a Squeak out of him over Job Losses at Canadian Banks.

It may be a cultural thing for Canadians to not stir up, however the proposed wish-washy in-cream-mentalism is nothing less then playing defense all the time , any time. It is a strategic mistake as you are not being able to score against the opponent and consequently not to win. I know that this attitude among conservatives originates from times when they were afraid of own shadow. Patience? What you are waiting for? For the Liberals to get stronger? CPC may move to the center (another strategic mistake), but if won't redefine the center, their stay is on temporary basis. Dion was weak, Ignatieff has been not better, I guess that must be some conservative "honorable" thing not to kick the Liberals when they are down.
btw....shouldn't the government be the leader of ideas for the nation, not just a custodian of the bureaucratic machine?

we should really call cbc......
LOL that is so true
xiat - we (right wing, conservatives, libertarians) are outnumbered.
I agree 100% that playing defense means you can only get scored on. But to extend the analogy, being a conservative in Canada means that to impress the media, you have to score from your own blue line, while playing defense, and getting elbowed in the face. And to get even cornier, we are always playing shorthanded.
It's tough to play like that, but hopefully after a while people will notice that it's a pretty impressive team.
