The My Obama Shop in Union Station is going out of business.
Last chance to get your sweatshirts, fridge magnets, shot glasses, playing cards: everything is marked down 50 per cent or more. Even the shelves and light fixtures are for sale. T-shirts are five bucks apiece, including those famous HOPE, CHANGE, and PROGRESS images. There's even a snappy pullover with Barack in shades and the motto, pre-empted from his predecessor, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
If the mission was 10 per cent unemployment, a trillion-dollar deficit, stunning Republican election victories in Virginia, New Jersey and now Massachusetts, and a 46 per cent approval rating, then that would be true, 52 weeks after the inauguration

Hey Joe, I remember Steve Fonyo. Of the 5000 km he was supposed to have run, about 4800 km he rode in a motorhome. He only ran through towns. I passed him in Sask., in both directions, and never saw him.
Within a month of finishing the run, he was in trouble for dipping into the funds. He's been charged for impaired driving FOUR TIMES. He's had about a dozen other serious charges, including assault with a weapon.
I don't have much regard for the order of Canada, but I have less for Steve Fonyo. He really wanted people to know he wasn't Terry Fox, and the truth is, he wasn't.

"they all do it"
Toronto Star, Tuesday, Jan. 26. Linda McQuaig's bi-weekly spew.
Today, she's complaining about Scott Brown's Senate seat win in Massachusetts, arguing that the right-wing agenda pretends to be anti-elitist.
Quote: "While the right likes to suggest that educated, well-spoken liberals are the elite, in fact, real power over the political agenda is exercised by the super-rich whose wealth and power has grown immensely in the past few decades."
Like George Soros, do you mean?
I would define the "elitists" as those who think they can get themselves into government (via election or influence) and run people's lives better than the individual citizens can themselves. That doesn't include anyone who would like to see smaller government.
McQuaig again: "... the same elite which brought us policies that led to the recent Wall Street collapse and economic decline retains the power and public prominence unchecked today."
That would be the American government that pushed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into making mortgage loans to people who couldn't afford them. Economic collapse and decline result from interfering in the free market that is based on voluntary trade of goods and services for mutual benefit.
Finally, she says "attacking the extraordinary power the rich wield today is not only good politics, it's essential if we want economic benefits for all and meaningful democracy."
The only people with "extraordinary power" are the elected government representatives who pass legislation. If that legislation goes beyond the bounds of the proper function of government and pushes the citizen around, it's bad for all of us. Economic benefits result from capitalism based on voluntary trade; socialism has never produced much of anything except misery (and criminal undemocratic elites a la Cuba).
And as usual, she loathes "the rich", as if ambition and hard work should not be rewarded.

On a similar note, consider arrogant twerp Bob Hepburn's column in the Star last Thursday, Jan. 21.
He says Americans have lost their "can-do" attitude, the one that took them to the moon, ended racial discrimination through the civil rights movement, and enacted "massive social programs to help children, the poor and the elderly". And the loss of this attitude has resulted in Scott Brown's election victory.
He says many Americans are in denial of the problems they face, and all they want is not to have taxes raised. "Millions lack health insurance, schools are virtually bankrupt, roads are crumbling and the rich-poor gap is widening. These are problems Americans once would have tackled head-on with their 'can-do' attitude." And "enlightened politicians are paralyzed, afraid to talk about raising taxes or introducing new spending initiatives, even though that's what in many cases needs to be done."
What drivel this is. The concept of the "can-do attitude" has always referred to individual action, not government action -- building a better mousetrap, and so on. Government action typically gets bogged down in politics and doesn't produce results like free market capitalism can. Taxes are a club over the head, not a sign of "enlightenment", and taxes and regulation are ultimately the reasons for "underfunding" of schools, roads, and any government activity you care to name. Again we see here the elitism of those who think they can run everybody's lives.
And the "rich-poor" gap is not a problem per se, although a widening gap may indicate one. But the rich have always been able to take care of themselves, often through their government connections (and the more such connections that exist, generally the less capitalistic the economy). It's the guy on the shop floor who loses his job because of high taxes, regulations and Big Government generally who is in the worst shape. The leftist agenda is to hamper business activity and cause unemployment so that more "social programs" can be set up and the left can pretend they are the only ones who care about the "little guy", even though the latter would prefer to be working.
Here's some more drivel the other day from U. of T. prof Stephen Scharper in the Toronto Star, Jan. 22. Subject: organic agriculture.
Quote: "By placing agriculture within a larger sense of interconnection with a sacred understanding of creation, [two advocates of organic farming he discusses] are hoeing a row for organic agriculture that leads away from a profit-driven, chemically based, highly competitive and ecologically destructive agribusiness model. For them, organic farming is not about 'survival of the fittest', but about the flourishing of all within a sacred Earth community."
There's nothing particularly wrong with organic agriculture if it produces good crops. But the hippy-dippy mysticism in the language is ridiculous. For starters, profit is not the underlying fact of the economy, trade is. Profits only result from increased production, and they are a sign of an advancing economy, i.e., a higher standard of living for the citizens -- a win-win scenario.
So here we have another fatuous academic with little or no understanding of the real world of trade, biting the hand that feeds. If it weren't for the "highly competitive" and "profit-driven" economy, he'd still be wearing a loincloth and hunting wild boar for supper.
Loved that Vit. Can't sleep so played a couple more on youtube. Find I still love Hamp's Boogie Woogie No. 2. Felt like a teenager again, and that's a good thing.
Globe and Mail, Tuesday, Jan. 26. Doug Peters and Arthur Donner.
Title: "It's jobs that make a real economic recovery". Fair point -- a recovery without jobs isn't much to write home about. The problem is that their suggestions miss the mark.
"What more can be done to promote increased employment? Certainly the existing programs relating to education and training for the future are important. So too are programs that increase the ability of workers to move to areas where jobs are available."
This doesn't address the real cause of unemployment: wages rising above the free market level, caused by things like excessive union power, the minimum wage, and other distortions.
The first item on the agenda should be to streamline the tax system. Keep rates low, close loopholes but above all eliminate the "incentives" that disrupt the economy and reduce overall economic production. With increased production, wages will be closer to where they should be. Economists believe that a 1% increase in wages over the free market level will cause 3-4% unemployment.
As for education and training, we have plenty of spending on the former already, but the article misses the point that profitability rather than education should be the economy's primary requirement. And there have been complaints that many government programs fail to train anyone for the jobs available, present or future. Training should be left to the individual companies that need trained personnel.
The authors also state that "Canada's next budget should stress the creation of employment - not just jobs but rather useful, productive and interesting work for all those who want to work."
Good grief. We'd all love jobs that are "interesting", of course. But the kind of jobs that are available are those that will result in the production of goods and services that consumers want -- what "useful and productive" means -- and this is the only legitimate reason for job creation.
The person who "lives to work" is luckier than the person who "works to live", and the latter must rely more on his outside interests for his pleasure, although one can and should always take pleasure in getting a job done properly. But the last thing the economy needs is a further level of unproductive bureaucrats deciding which jobs are "interesting". And most of the jobs that are neither useful nor productive can be found within government.
They conclude: "The right kind of public spending today will benefit future generations". Possibly, but the vast majority of it would be better spent by the citizen who earned it than by government.

Also three items on economic matters, National Post, Tuesday, Jan. 26.
1. The Conference Board of Canada suggests tax cuts to boost productivity.
It says that the quality of labour has climbed steadily since 1961, while the amount of capital (machinery and equipment) has been stagnant since the 1980s.
This is also caused by taxes and regulation. In an economic decline, it's the upper-end technological jobs that go first, while those closest to basic needs go last. Maybe this explains the ongoing lack of manufacturing jobs.
The story says, "Productivity growth is widely considered the best way to increase a society's standard of living". Is there any other?
2. Alan Arcand and Mario Lefebvre, Financial Post, want to slash capital taxes to boost productivity growth.
A 2004 Department of Finance study indicated that a $1.00 cut in capital taxes would result in a $1.40 increase in economic well-being (as opposed to only $0.10 from a similar cut in consumption taxes).
"Government regulations have affected Canada's productivity performance." ...
They also criticize "under-investment in public infrastructure", but that's a function of taxes and regulation too.
3. Terence Corcoran. "Lots of options for spending cuts".
He points to an Andrew Coyne column in Macleans that called for $20 billion in cuts, including $6 billion in transfers to provinces over five years, $700 million from shutting down regional development agencies, $1 billion in cutting business subsidies, and so on. With further ideas from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.

Met Steve Fonyo in a pub in White Rock many years ago and even then he was whining that he should have got a $million for what he did. Then I saw him running with the crack gangs in New Westminster.

"Terence Corcoran: Heat wave closes in on the IPCC
Insider Andrew Weaver is getting out while the going is good
A catastrophic heat wave appears to be closing in on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. How hot is it getting in the scientific kitchen where they’ve been cooking the books and spicing up the stew pots? So hot, apparently, that Andrew Weaver, probably Canada’s leading climate scientist, is calling for replacement of IPCC leadership and institutional reform.
If Andrew Weaver is heading for the exits, it’s a pretty sure sign that the United Nations agency is under monumental stress. Mr. Weaver, after all, has been a major IPCC science insider for years. He is Canada Research Chair in Climate Modelling and Analysis at the University of Victoria, mastermind of one of the most sophisticated climate modelling systems on the planet, and lead author on two recent landmark IPCC reports. For him to say, as he told Canwest News yesterday, that there has been some “dangereous crossing” of the line between climate advocacy and science at the IPCC is stunning in itself.
Not only is Mr. Weaver an IPCC insider. He has also, over the years, generated his own volume of climate advocacy that often seemed to have crossed that dangereous line between hype and science. It is Mr. Weaver, for example, who said the IPCC’s 2007 science report — the one now subject to some scrutiny —“isn’t a smoking gun; climate is a battalion of intergalactic smoking missiles.”
He has also made numerous television appearances linking current weather and temperature events with global warming, painting sensational pictures and dramatic links. “When you see these [temperature] numbers, it’s screaming out at you: ‘This is global warming!”
Mr. Weaver is also one of the authors of The Copenhagen Diagnosis, an IPCC-related piece of agit-prop issued just before the recent Copenhagen meeting.
The Copenhagen Diagnosis is as manipulative a piece of policy advocacy as can be found, filled with forboding and alarming assessments. Described as “an interim evaluation of the evolving science,” it was an attempt to jump-start decision-making at Copenhagen. It failed, perhaps in part because one of the authors was U.S. climate scientist Michael Mann, who plays a big role in the climategate emails."

"Much ado about no Parliment"
and all the ruckus puts Premier McGuinty in a curious position
*He(Bob Rae) poroqued 3x in a 4.5yr mandate..
*why? because his Govt was in tatters & he wanted to play for time, Hows that for a Slap to Democracy?
*Yet Rae has the nerve to talk about Harpers slap to democracy!
*Some angry people think Rae was justified in Proroguing because he had a Majority & Harper is in a Minority situation
***Thats Nonsense In fact it makes it worse, If you have a majority govt. and your still afraid to face Question Period, What kind of coward are you?
*Others pointed out just as Rae ran double digits deficits so is Harper now. Thats true, and why is Harper in deficit Territory?
*Because in late 2008, One Bob Rae put together a coalition that threatened to bring down the Govt when the economy started to tank, Why?
**Because Harper wasn't planning to go deep enough into debt to stimulate the economy..
* It was Spend-Your-Way-Rich-Bob up to his old tricks again, It would have been the 3rd Minority Parliment he'd toppled
More......Rae, McGuinty...
IMO:
The best part of all that is proroguing a Majority because he was afraid to Face "Question Period"
So this also Points to Jean Chretian doing the same in a Majority Situation!!!
This would say afraid to face to People What was there to Hide? Oh we all know the answer to that Rae Days & Chretian Adscam..
The conservative should pick up on that line, Why? Because like so many have said If the Oposition feels that Harper is so wrong & a threat to Democracy Then Topple the Govt.
Of which i said yesterday i would not be surprised if they did not do in March what with the Polls & Hatred, Distaste they have recently created with the help of the LIberal Leaning Media in Canada.

He also makes a great point if these proposed Prorogation changes were in effect 1yr ago then you would have "Prime Minister Dion" today!!
My prediction, an election is coming possibly as soon as the HOC resumes after the Budget is delivered, With a secret Liberal/NDP Coalition being formed in the Event the Liberals squeak out a Minority win. This would in effect create a Majority in the House for them This would in effect Result in Tax Increase's namely a Carbon Tax with the left blaming the Conservatives for putting us in a deficit position Which in reality the Opposition created.

IMO: The Liberals/NDP are creating a Hysteria amongst the Voters with the help of the media, Creating an Impression that Democracy in Canada is in Danger, thanks to Harper.
So in other words the problem with the first attempt to Overthrow the Govt in late 2008 to Overthrow the Govt was there was No Build-Up to it,No mass hate or anger Until the attempt. The Coalition attempt backfired on the socialist last time, the strategy this time is to create a feeling that we are in danger of becoming a Dictatorship.
Just look at the anger that has been created in Canada By the usual suspects i might add, with the bombardment of mass guilty created by the media, demostrations which in turn creates a downturn in popularity for the Conservatives which is evident in the recent polls. Yes my friends History is repeating itself only this time it is not Europe its Canada!
Socialism is dangerously alive in well in Canada & is on the verge of taking over this country. Creating a country the likes we have never seen before, It is on the verge of creating a country that our parents, grand-parents, uncles aunts brothers sisters faught and died to stop. A country controlled in every form of the way from your municipalities right up to the highest office in the land Controled by Socialist.
One more thing Why has the BQ remained so suspiciously silent over these past few wks? What's in it for them?
Yes my friends Democracy in Canada is in Danger & And what a perfect atmosphere to create the perfect storm to overthrow the govt. much like we seen in the 1930's Europe. The economy, enviroment, job loss's etc... Yes History is repeating itself, only Its Canada & North America's turn.
Kate & others, I would appreciate your thoughts & opinions on what iam saying.

bryanr - I haven't been following the proroguing rants as I don't watch/read Canadian news.
However, I suspect that Harper was aware that the Liberals/NDP were planning yet another coalition take-over - and that this plan was to be carried out BEFORE the 2010 budget. I suspect that this backroom plan of the Liberals/NDP was the reason why he prorogued. Nothing to do with question period.
I also suspect that his budget will be extremely favourable to Canadians and that if the Liberals/NDP vote against it, they'd be in trouble with the electorate.
If there is an election and there may well be, the key issue will be on that budget, while the Liberal/NDP key issue that they were plotting was an emotional one: Afghan detainees.
WallyJ:
please read what i just posted @10:48, Your thoughts appr.
I really think their is a Conspiracy being concocted With the Bloq remaining Very Quiet as not to send to many alarm bells or to show the cards. We must remember there was a recent shakeup in the Liberal office & Donelo worked the same tactics before EG: Chretians Red Book Lies all smoke & mirrors, Take Power at all cost,And if that means making a deal with the Devil so be it as long as you can retake the keys to the country. A deal with the NDP & Bloq that keep's them happy, one that allows them to keep their portion of the pie. And all under the Guise that Democracy is in trouble with Harper as the dictator.
ET thanks for your thoughts I always value your opinions.
I do think though that the plot would not have hatched before the Olympics, I do believe that the left realizes that Canadians are more & more wrapped up in the Olympics & would have shown their outrage towards them at the Electoral Polls if they were interupted.
Also the PM's Progue has bought them the time needed as i said before to create the perfect storm of outrage against the PM & Govt.
I do believe that once the Olympics start the public will not follow the rants & raves of the liberals/ndp & they know that. So create the scenario now with the takedown coming at the Budget with the reminders of the progue for the reason.
I also believe even if the Govt creates a cant refuse budget the opposition will still find a crack in the armor, The stage has been set with a rampup this wk. And i know you have said before you dont follow media in canada, But what iam basicaly saying is this firestorm was created & continues with the help of the media.
And just in the past few days we have finaly heard from just a few editorials trying to douse this flame.
bryanr - I'm basing my opinion on the fact that Harper would have known the a prorogue would give the Liberals/NDP ammunition against him. So, why did he do it?
That's why I suggest he was trying to smoke them out. He succeeded last year in that tactic by also throwing them that 'no more public financing of political parties' bait. They took it and insisted on a coalition.
Now, the prorogue hasn't smoked them out into a 'we must have a coalition' because they know that it was a disastrous agenda from last time. Therefore, they were trying to bring down the govt on an emotional issue, win a Liberal minority and then, insert their coalition. Harper stopped them with the prorogue and is having them wait for the budget.
The thing that gets me though is that there has been more outrage & hysteria in the media about PM Harper & the Prorogue Then the member of the Toronto 18 receiving his 1day in jail.
The guy is part of a plot to Kill thousands of innocent Canadians, a plot to blow up our Parliment & behead the Prime Minister And he recieves 1day extra day because he has been a good boy in pre-trial confinement & said he is sorry. The judge buys this and says he is free to go, but not until you serve one more day just to make sure you learned your lesson, And their is No Out Cry of Anger & WTF is going on from the Left leaning media, None whats so ever.
No they would rather create a riot over a clause that has been in our form of Govt since we became a country.
And now we see the likes of Jack Layton spouting off last nite on Power Play that their is an outcry of Foul from the Foreign Economist in the commonwealth & that the Govts of the Commonwealth are going to blame Harper if this outrage from the public happens in their countries if they progue. Who gives a Shit what some Brit Economist thinks or some other commonwealth country thinks just who gives a shit. I live in Canada, But no no the media buys into Jack's smiling BS on TV.
**Lets not forget Too folks Who gaines a Great deal Monetary wise in the event of an election? None other then the Media with all the Advertising $$$$$ that are to be made, It could just pull them out of the Red if there was an election.
Like i have said There is a major Conspiracy going on in Canada with the Liberals/NDP & the media & Canadians are being sucked into the plot..Bigtime
