The Creole pig was geared to Haiti's terrain, got by on the sparse vegetation and didn't need especially clean drinking water. Almost every rural family in Haiti had one.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, amid the swine flu hysteria, the United States pressured Haitian dictator Jean-Claude 'Baby Doc' Duvalier into slaughtering virtually all of the Creole pigs, lest they help spark an epidemic of the flu.
The indigenous breed was replaced by imported U. S. pigs, which proved so unsuitable to life on the island that they promptly expired ...

Oakville's Thomas Blakelock high school hockey team has been shut down for the season after one player made a racial remark to an opposing player during a game. Previously, three students were kicked off the team for unspecified "inappropriate behaviour", and the principal made negative comments about team "chemistry".
The shutdown is a massive overreaction. By all means toss the offending player, but what is the point of penalizing the entire team for the actions of one player? That does not teach the proper lesson to students.

nv53, re the shutdown of Thomas Blakelock hockey team for the misdemeanor of one: "The shutdown is a massive overreaction. By all means toss the offending player, but what is the point of penalizing the entire team for the actions of one player?"
The point is that individual/personal responsibility and accountability are a thing of the past; only the collective matters.
"Zero tolerance," as Barbara Coloroso puts it, is "zero thinking." By shutting down the entire team, there's no need to fine tune the lesson, to discover nuance or a hierarchy of values such as "good, better, best."
You're either a complete apparatchik of the institution/state or you're not. It's all or nothing. 'Saves the admin's having to use their brains or fine tune their moral and ethical compasses.

I give you Bob Rae, King of the Prorogues.
[...]
By 1994, his government had run out of steam. They were running double-digit deficits and he’d doubled the debt. Some of his experimental policies proved laughable at best and disastrous at worst.
Limping badly, he prorogued for the third time on Dec. 9, 1994. The House did not sit again until the legislature was dissolved April 28, 1995.
Rae didn’t even bring in a budget that year.
For four-and-a-half months, this province had no sitting Legislature.
Was there a grass-roots uprising of self-righteous people decrying Rae for ending democracy?
===
Read the whole thing. It's pretty good.
It should also be pointed out that Rae, whose gov't was elected in Sept 1990, defied the will of the people by clinging to power, going deep into his 5th year before calling an election he knew his unpopular gov’t would face certain defeated in…. and he knew this the year before, at the 4 year mark of his mandate, when traditionally majority gov‘ts in this province go to the polls. The subsequent election was June 1995. Considering that he couldn’t call an election in July or August of that year, that’s going all the way to the end. Yet Mr. Harper, Rae says, is defying Canadians.
What a hypocrite!
Can anyone give details where the Mayor, City Councilors, and high ranking employees of the city of Saskatoon live. I would like to check to see if their streets get special attention with snow removal

PET Cemetery reporting:
““There is no Liberal Party,””.
“Silence is all there is."
““What’s happening?” “Nothin’,””
““It died a long time ago.”
…-
“Talk to Liberals – office holders, party organizers, fundraisers – around the country and you will tap into a malaise that a good pollster could rout out with a single question: “What’s happening?” “Nothin’,” the vast majority would respond, with a margin of error of plus or minus very little.
“There is no Liberal Party,” says one lifelong card carrier who has sat at cabinet tables.
“It died a long time ago. It’s not completely extinct yet, but there’s no there there.” In this lifelong Liberal’s eyes, the party has been stalled for years. No new energy, no new ideas, no vision of what it might like to do. The singular advantage of proroguing, this Liberal would say, is that it has put an end to the squirming every time the opposition pounces.
“The ‘gotcha’ stuff is out of control,” says the Liberal. “They bring in all these nerdy keener kids from campus and it’s some kind of game to them. They’re turning politics into pro wrestling.” The media concentrates on the top, Ignatieff, and on the Hill, but disenchanted Liberals say there is a story to be told far from the now-silenced sound bites of the Centre Block.
“Few Liberals,” says an often-successful candidate, “have appreciated just how devastating the leadership races since 1984 have been. The party has been savaged by its own races.” Steamroller politics replaced volunteer politics and the result was that, “The fun of it all, the socializing – it all disappeared. People asked themselves if they wanted to spend their volunteer time watching the Hatfields go at the McCoys and they decided, ‘No, thanks.’ They gave their volunteer time to something else.” The result, this lifelong Liberal says, is that a great many constituency organizations became little more than Potemkin villages between elections and leadership races, false fronts with nothing behind.
With nothing of substance coming up and nothing of substance seeming to trickle down, the “party of ideas” kept slipping further and further into the past for these disenchanted loyalists.
“Why,” asks one, “can’t we have a coalition of men and women who believe in something and not just criticize everything?” A fair question.
And one that suggests an alternative be in order before anyone reads too much into these polls.”

Why did Tom Clark Who called it a Moronic Idea & Bob Fife called it just plain stupid not say who the Politician was that they were referring to. when they spoke of a certain Leader of a Major Political Party in Canada saying that the Govt & PM should open the Doors to Immigration from Haiti, With No Background Checks & to bring all residents of Haiti to Canada?
And finaly why have the Liberal Leadership Canidates Not Paid their Outstanding debts? And why Nothing about it in the MSM?

Wallyj, that reminds me of the newspaper article with the headline "Muslim's Fear Backlash from Tomorrow's Bombing"
Patrice Cormier is suspended for the season including the playoffs for his cowardly hit on Mikael Tam.
What a despicable POS Patrice Cormier is! Reflex action to what as he claims, Tam never even had the puck, which was down at the far end. At the very least if Cormier checked him he would have got a penalty for interference. To drive an unsuspecting Tam in the face with Cormier's armoured elbow leaving him in convulsions with shattered teeth is simply criminal. Was it also a reflex action to break the nose of the Swedish player?
I hope this coward is charged by the police for assault with intent to injure as that is what he clearly intended.
Hockey at all levels must clean up this unacceptable violence by informing players that this type of act is not acceptable on our streets and certainly not accepted on our rinks. Players that do perpetrate this dangerous, life threatening act will be banned for life and fully charged under the law for their actions. Hockey is a great sport and entertainment and we deserve to watch the best players play it for our ticket dollar not just read the long list of injured players that have been sidelined by dubious checks, boarding, hit from behind and other methods of removing them from the game.

"Canada farm minister says CWB wasted farmers' money
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (Reuters) - A Supreme Court decision that backed the Canadian government's move to prevent the Canadian Wheat Board from spending money on lobbying to maintain its grain marketing monopoly shows the CWB wasted farmers' money, Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz said Friday.
"This government has always maintained that the CWB should stick to its mandate of marketing grain, not spending farmers' money on lobbying for their own political purposes," Ritz said in a statement. "The decision to dismiss with costs proves the wheat board wasted farmers' money to bring forward a frivolous court action."
The Supreme Court of Canada said on Thursday it will not hear an appeal by the Canadian Wheat Board of a lower court ruling that upheld the government's 2006 order not to spend on lobbying.
The federal Conservative government has long wanted to end the board's legislated monopoly to buy and sell Western Canadian wheat and barley, but lacks enough seats in the House of Commons to do so without opposition support."

MI/MI is getting his 'talking points' from Fox News and the Tea Party protesters in the USA. The 'locked door' - when the Republicans were locked out of the Health Care talks - Fox News highlighted the locked out of door; the 'we, the people', want accountability' -see Tea Party signs.
The Troika are attempting to apply the proroguing of parliament, in Canada, for two weeks,( nobody is in the HOC, so nobody is locked out of anything, in Canada!) with the outrage in the USA over policies that will nationalize one seventh of the US economy! The citizens of USA are outraged that American SEALS are being charged with smacking a terrorist, the Canadian people are not outraged that some terrorist prisoners were transferred to the people that they had been terrorizing. We are all concerned about the health of our soldiers, not the health of the enemy!! The Troika is pathetic, IMO.
There is no comparison, there is no 'outrage' in Canada. The msm is grasping at straws, using talking points lifted directly from Fox News and the Tea Party protesters.

Berry: Obama said "big difference" between '10 and '94 is "me"
Rep. Marion Berry's parting shot, published in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette [no link, subscription only] offers a warning to moderate Democrats and border state moderates — warning of a midterm bloodbath comparable to the 54-seat D-to-R swing in 1994.
But the jaw-dropper is Berry's claim that President Obama personally dismissed any comparison between Democrats now and under Bill Clinton 16 years ago — by saying his personal popularity would bail everybody out.
The retiring Berry, who doesn't say when the remarks were made, now scoffs at Obama's 50-or-below approval rating:
Writes ADG reporter Jane Fullerton:
Berry recounted meetings with White House officials, reminiscent of some during the Clinton days, where he and others urged them not to force Blue Dogs “off into that swamp” of supporting bills that would be unpopular with voters back home.
“I’ve been doing that with this White House, and they just don’t seem to give it any credibility at all,” Berry said. “They just kept telling us how good it was going to be. The president himself, when that was brought up in one group, said, ‘Well, the big difference here and in ’94 was you’ve got me.’ We’re going to see how much difference that makes now.” [snip]
“I began to preach last January that we had already seen this movie and we didn’t want to see it again because we know how it comes out,” said Arkansas’ 1st District congressman, who worked in the Clinton administration before being elected to the House in 1996... "I just began to have flashbacks to 1993 and ’94. No one that was here in ’94, or at the day after the election felt like. It certainly wasn’t a good feeling.”"

Elections Canada is currently revising the documents that pertain to the registrattion and financing of leadership candidates. Hmmm,...http://www.elections.ca/content.asp?section=gen&document=ec90531&dir=bkg&lang=e&textonly=false
Also, the Elections Canada page was "Last Modified: 2010-1-11 ". That is 10 days after the 6 liberals defaulted on their loans. Coincidence, maybe.
Today on Power&Politics (Soloman), a 3-party panel was asked about the proposal to constrain the Prime Minister's ability to dissolve Parliament. I think this would be a BIG mistake -- it is only relevant in a minority Parliament, and nothing would prevent the Opposition from twisting things to favour their Parties, while tying the hands of government. Even in a minority Parliament, the PM should have the power to steer the course of government, as that is the basis on which he and his party are re-elected or defeated.
Now when the question came up, of course Libby Davies and Bob Rae were all for curtailing the power of the PM to prorogue. Pierre Poliviere pointed out that this is laying the ground work for another coalition takeover should a Conservative minority government happen again after the next election.
At first I thought his comments were a bit over the top -- and I did not see Ignatieff planning such a thing, but the more I think of it, the more I can see Bob Rae instigating another coalition takeover and upon reflection I think Poliviere's warning has merit.

Following up on wallyj's post, the senior muslim advisor said the cause is that the government did not force the muslims to integrate into British society. This is exactly what Pierre Trudeau has inflicted upon Canada with his pet project Multiculturalism and we are experiencing the same problems. It is time to stop muslim immigration until our government is prepared to have a fully laid out plan for such integration and be prepared to deport those that refuse to integrate.
