Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here is the Eugen Maersk, II, III, IV, V, episode of Mega Builders: "Building the World's Largest Container Ship", from the Odense Steel Shipyard, in Denmark, in 2008. The Danish registered Eugen Maersk is 398 meters or 1,305 feet long, and 56 meters or 154 feet wide, and she has a deadweight of 156,907 tons. Her Wartsila diesel engine delivers up to 90 megawatts (about 120 thousand horsepower), and she has the world's largest propeller (with a diameter of 9.5 meters or 31 feet). And for your ease of reference, here's a link to our November 14, 2009, Late Nite Radio show on large ship engines.
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Mega Builders is a great series. Another great series is Ultimate Factories. After watching a Sunday marathon of Factories, I realized the reports of the death of American manufacturing have been greatly exaggerated.
31 feet! That's one big screw! Best thing to come out of Denmark until the failure of the Copenhagen climate talks.
I really had no idea.It is a good thing that I stumbled upon this Globe and Mail story.---http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/albertans-agree-a-carbon-tax-was-the-best-solution/article1441309/---.
Canadian Mao Stlong, aka UNabomber, is safely tucked away in Red China.
Mao's nephew is Canadian "Liberal leader" MP Bob Rae. ...-
"Glacier scientist: I knew data hadn't been verified
"The scientist behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 last night admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders.
"Dr Murari Lal also said he was well aware the statement, in the 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), did not rest on peer-reviewed scientific research.
[Snip ~ it's copyright: read the link below. ~ Vitruvius]
"Last night, Dr Pachauri defended the IPCC, saying it was wrong to generalise based on a single mistake. ‘Our procedure is robust,’ he added."

No its' not. Mao Stlong says to publish.
Mao Stlong apploved it.

Please take a look ET, I would be very interested in your comments on what is being put forth in it.
Vitruvius- Always love these examples of 'mega stuff'.
But something I've always wondered about concerning gargantuan monstrosities such as this- how do they come up with a credible weight? Is it by carefully monitoring material input? water displacement? what?. How about things like skyscapers, draglines, bridges, etc?
Now I know Rosie O'D. doesn't rent out her bathroom scale, so just how do they do it?

Yesterday's poll question in the Chronicle Herald asked if the cruise lines should cease operations in northern Haiti given the earthquake devistation in the south.
Interesting difference in the poll results, in favour of such a stupid idea and the majority of the comments stating just how stupid the idea is.
One comment caught my eye and it just SCREAMS left wing,
"Let the Cruise bussiness donate to the rebuilding , and detour . If I loose a family loved one suddenly, you would not catch me arrangimg a line/dancing jamboree!"
So, instead of employing people, they should just give them money.........
What brain desease allows people to think like that? I really do not get it.

How do we do it, Snagglepuss? Years, decades, centuries of practice.
Because, as Tom said, The quality goes in before the name goes on ;-)
Why the glacier issue is so big.

I dunno.....all I saw was Tom 'Waste' 8:22 of my time @ Theatre le Palace 1979 part4.
Nontheless, I'm still curious....
Engineers out there who can enlighten?
Well then, it depends on which version of weight you mean. You mentioned some of them, there are others. One could certainly start with Archimedes' Principle, as was so brilliantly discussed by Dr. Walter Lewin, professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in his Hydrostatics, Archimedes' Principle, & Bernoulli's Equation lecture, which we mentioned here in our May 24, 2009, Late Nite Radio show.

That article is arguing the merits of Cap and Trade vs.Carbon Taxation vs Carbon Sequestration.
or
Insanity vs Insanity vs.Insanity based on Insanity. Ergo, Quebec gets more money because some big players here are betting on Canadians being stuck on stupid.
("Albertans agree: A carbon tax was the best solution.
The economics of sequestration are expensive on a per-tonne basis.")
Albertans agree: A carbon tax was the best solution.
As an Albertan I disagree. The best solution is feeding CO2 to plants. You know those things we eat.
Agreed Atlanticjim - When I heard that there was controversy about it (was it on CNN or Global?) probably both, I couldn't believe the stupidity of it. shut down possibly the only industry this country has, and putting thousands of Haitiens out of work? That would be wise!
Ok Vit, was checking out some of your links....
I'll maybe have a sitdown with Dr. Walter Lewin's site as that looks pretty infomative.
That Archimedes dude might be on to something. I'll predict he goes far.
Displacement, buoyancy, pressure, surface tension...doesn't answer my questions on non-aquatic structures, (unless we're talking The Acme Bridge Construction Company of Roadrunner fame, but then I don't even want to go there tonite).
When I ask what time it is, I really don't care to get into the time continuum theory, or how to make a watch, I just want to know if it's my bedtime yet.(:~)
Understood, Snagglepuss, I just wanted to make sure we had that under our belt before venturing into the less physical notions of Tonnage, which starts to really get us into the meat of the matter of the wacky but practical units of measurement that we humans invent, such as the Deadweight Tonnage first mentioned supra. And on that note, I do know one thing: good night folks, best wishes.
Us Ingineers luv big ships, big bridges, big plants , big anything.
..... and it has nothing to do with that.
Now THIS is clever techno-art:
"Artwork selling itself on eBay"
"A Tool to Deceive and Slaughter, 2009, is a black, acrylic box that places itself for sale on eBay every seven days thanks to an internet connection, which, according to the artist's conditions of sale, must be live at all times. Disconnections are only allowed during transportation, says the creator."
[...]
"Here's how it works. The purchaser can set a new value for the artwork, which must be based on "current market expectations" of Larsen's work, and which could be considerably more than the price they paid. When A Tool to Deceive and Slaughter decides it wants to be sold again, bidders will start their battle at the value set by the current owner."
"This is where the art collector could make money. However they must first pay any fees to eBay and give Larsen 15 percent of any increase in value of the artwork."
http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2010-01/22/artwork-selling-itself-on-ebay.aspx
Great entertainment Vitruvius, much appreciated. I seldom watch much TV other than News and Hunting Shows and watching this series is a fun thing. The internet news coverage has stolen my free time. lol
Thanks again,
Pat
Snag (Snagglepuss at January 23, 2010 10:37 PM), these days, with engineering software, one just clicks the CofG button after everything is designed (and hope that all the weight data for individual components was entered correctly). Before software, a really smart engineer figured out an approximation and then adjusted it based on experience.
Strangely, engineering software tends to work somewhat better than climate prediction software.
This is what the unintended consequences of making schools a haven for Women, & a nightmare for Men.
I might ad as the Men become less educated, with structured civilization. The more Barbarous we become. So Women's rights will take a hard dive one of these days. To much success can destroy you.

However, a helicopter sent to Resolute to pluck the man off the ice has been unable to take off due to mechanical problems, Wilson said.
I wonder what kind of helicopter it is with mechanical problems. Could it be?
No Johann, it could not.

My prediction for Obama's State of the Union. He'll be operating in his three basic narratives:
First, Obama-as- Heroic Fighter: He will present himself as Himself, i.e., larger than life. He is in the right, courageous, feisty, working against 'all odds' (which include the ignorant American people who reject his, sorry, His Wisdom)...He'll define any who are against him as against progress and change..etc..
Second, Obama-as-Wise Guardian: He will define Health Care as an integral part of the economy (which it is) but will define His reform of it as beneficial, reducing costs, blah blah.
He'll also tout everything he's done as wonderful...
And of course, Obama-as-Victim: He will define himself as a victim of Bush, the past economy, the past foreign infrastructure, etc, etc.
That is - no change. He will refuse to change and will continue to behave as Messiah, Heroic Fighter Against the Enemy, and as Victim.
I don't see that he, as a narcissist, entrapped in these above three stories for so many years...can change.
And, the people who run him, the radical socialists, have only ONE agenda...to insert a statist infrastructure. They can't give it up.
..even if they go down in flames in November.
Radicals. Sounds rather like other radicals we know, such as Islamic fascists, who also use the same verbiage of: Heroic Fighters, Wise Guardians Who Know It All, and Victims of Evil, Ignorance and Whatever.
Jina Moore, New study argues war deaths are often overestimated
A new report released this week asserts that the human cost of modern warfare has decreased significantly, challenging both the methods and results of other studies.
For instance, the Human Security Report, produced at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, claims that the widely cited death toll of 5.4 million in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is double what it should be.
The hotly contested report calls into question the larger estimate, made by the International Rescue Committee (IRC), and alludes to controversies surrounding death tolls in Darfur and Iraq. It also questions the most general assumptions about conflict, from how deadly war is to whether the number of war dead can even be counted...

Rex Murphy: Canadian, Newfoundlander, Rhodes scholar, wordmaster par excellence.
“Obama was a chandelier presence in a world of political moles.” (Past tense)
…-
“Rex Murphy: A president in need of a pickup
It was but a single day shy of a perfect year from Barack Obama’s inauguration, when a previously unheralded, not emphatically gifted, Republican candidate, Scott Brown, won the Senatorial election in the state of Massachusetts. The Senate seat in question was not just any seat: It wasn’t so much held, as owned and occupied, stamped with the family coat-of-arms, taken under the political equivalent of copyright protection, by Ted Kennedy. This seat was Democratic in the same way we say water is wet, birds twitter, and reality TV grinds the living nerves.
Yet Scott Brown, a guy who campaigned in a five-year-old pickup truck (GMC Canyon), starting the race 30 points behind the Democratic candidate, stared down campaign jolts from ex-President Clinton, and President Obama, and won Tuesday night by a five-point margin. Truly, the planet has begun to heal, the rising of the seas has begun to slow.
Scott Brown’s win was the real report card on Barack Obama’s one-year presidency. He may have given himself, in an interview with Dame Oprah of Afternoon Fluff, a B+. Voters of Massachusetts were more clear-eyed and rigorous. They went, let us say, with a “gentleman’s D.”
How did this happen? Obama was a chandelier presence in a world of political moles.”

To add to maz2's comment above:
Rex Murphy's been given his head over at the National Post! Thank G*d we've got one Canadian journalist -- well, I guess we've got Conrad Black, but he's not a journalist by trade or vocation -- who has the gonads to say it like it is.
"Which brings us to hubris. Nice to walk through a cloud of incense, but don’t look for a daily fix. Obama’s celebrated cool has translated for many into its flipside: extravagantly unearned self-assurance. With a persona that oscillates between professor and hipster, he patronizes — he’s either smarter or cooler than anyone else in the room, and, worse, looks very pleased to be both.
...
" ... he’s a horse-trader in the grand manner, a Huey Long redux — trafficking in special deals, operating behind closed doors, as hard-nosed a politico as our age has seen. He offered and articulated a vision of a better way of doing things, of 'redeeming the time.' He didn’t mean it."
