Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here are Debbie Harry and the boys, as Blondie, performing Dreaming ¤, from their Eat to the Beat album, in 1979 (3:02).

I s'pose I should mention that this may be N.S.F.P.W.T.H.T.F.U.T.A.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

What the hell is that supposed to represent, I still am unsure what LOL stands for?

N.S.F.P.W.T.H.T.F.U.T.A. not safe for playing with the headphones full up totaly awesome (dude)??

Don't usually do movie reviews (see one a year, maybe) but will recommend Avatar only as eye candy. If you pay much attention to the story, it will drive you mad ... same ole , same ole. White man (American marines) evil, killing all the aboriginals so they can strip mine the planet to make the stock holders happy.

Pretty good, Speedy, but you missed a "T"; still, "not safe for playing
with the headphones turned full up totally awesome" would work.
Of course, that's not what I meant at all ;-)

I have a feeling the FU means ..you know ..the usual...

Vit...you certainly have a way of keeping us entertained, and on our toes. I thank you for that.
Off to bed now...hope to see the answer in a.m.

Not Safe For People With Their Hoity Toity F**cked Up Toady Attitude,or whatever you want it to be.

No, F.U. doesn't mean that at all, Bluetech. Besides, shouldn't that be F.Y.?

Agreed. Really didn't give that one too much thought. Figure if you get enough wrong answers, you'll give it away :)

Well, now you've made me think about it for a second. "Thus far" I've come up with "thrust far". At least it parses. Ok, now I'm done even if it's wrong.

You're down to the "T".

Not safe for people with their heads too far up their ass

Correctissimo yes? as G said.. like the bridge

Yes! James completes the puzzle.

It's not merely that one has one's head up one's ass, folks, for, truly, we all do. Otherwise, why would we be doing this (for some value of this)? Rather, it's a matter of kind, not just degree! It's a question of "not safe for people with their heads too far up their ass". For, surely, otherwise, at some point, one's entire dialectal position will suffer a rhetorical spinal collapse. And on that note, good night folks; thanks, as always, Kate, for this opportunity.

Well, I don't think it's a mistake, it's a procedure. Sad that it hurts the PCs. But no matter what they do, they would be criticized

National Post, Thursday, Financial Post comment page: letter, Andrea Horwath, Ontario NDP leader, responding to Terence Corcoran column Tuesday.

"... I believe the vast majority of Ontarians would welcome a little help from their provincial government. Not taxpayer subsidies but a simple and predictable way for individuals and their employers to contribute to financial independence during their retirement years."

Earth to NDP: There is no way to provide "government help" without taxpayers paying for it in some way, whether via a pension program or just paying bureaucratic salaries.

Quoting TD chief economist Don Drummond: "After 50 years of promoting RRSPs, we have to conclude they haven't turned out as envisioned."

That's because a lot of people don't have the money to purchase RRSPs because they pay too much in taxes for wasteful government programs, agencies, boards and commissions that do little if anything useful, and which in some cases may be destructive.

Horwath: "But there are success stories. In Ontario, pension plans like OMERS, the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and the healthcare sector's HOOPP provide a reliable retirement income for thousands of people every year. And the Canada Pension Plan continues to quietly and reliably provide every Canadian with a small retirement income. These are models that work."

Yeah, and the pensions for MPs and MPPs "work" too because they are taxpayer-subsidized. I don't have the facts in front of me, but don't tax dollars subsidize the other plans she mentions? Or is it just the inflated government-union salaries that enable people to afford these "success stories"?

Horwath is flogging a publicly-run Ontario Retirement Plan in which those without workplace pension plans will be "automatically enrolled", although the plan "is not mandatory. If you have a better way to plan for your retirement, you don't have to take part".

This must be the first policy the NDP has ever come up with that is not mandatory. But if you can't opt out just because you want to, without having to show "a better way to plan for your retirement", then it's mandatory.

Remember that the only difference between government and the private sector is that government can use coercion. This brings a lack of accountability -- if the government screws up, you get a chance to change things four years from now, with one vote among millions, instead of the instant feedback of taking your money to a competitor.

A pension is essentially a pooled savings account for thousands of people, that pays only to survivors. Savings are unconsumed production that are reinvested in the economy to produce a return on the investment. Like savings, pensions can only perform well if the economy is productive. And to maximize that, you need laissez-faire capitalism, with an end to as many cynical, worthless government vote-buying schemes as possible.

Thanks Vit!! She is one cute blond!

Regarding NV53's comments on pension plans, I've been lobbying our Regional District Board because of outrageous annual property tax increases.

Their budget has increased an average 12%/yr for the last five years. Those are compounding increases, of course. Their biggest cost is labour and the number of employees per thousand residents is increasing, each of them earning 30% more than their private sector counterparts.

This applies to pensions too. The employees pay 8% of their salaries which isn't too difficult when you're earning 1/3 more than the guy paying the property tax. This is matched by the District, making for a very healthy defined benefit pension plan. Then throw in the accumulated pay for sick days, plus all the other associated perks that accrue to a public service job.

Oh, and lest I forget, our District - which can't seem to repair our roads - has a budget for 'Social Justice' and 'Restorative Justice" and they're now undertaking an initiative to incorporate local aboriginal members onto the board, without any complications like being elected. Nor or course do they own land or pay property taxes in the District.

Yet they will be invited to throw a stick in the spokes everytime a new initiative is proposed. Our Board Chairman is very progressive and believes everything should be looked at through all possible lenses.

Someone opined that "you get the government you deserve" and I suppose it's true. In an effort to get people taking about local tax matters, I tried to convene a community meeting. Despite posting multiple notices on community mailboxes (twice), e-mailing and asking others to e-mail others in turn and renting a venue for the meeting - not one person turned up.

So the Board of course, does as they please because no one complains about the out of control spending.

Not sure if this is the original origin of the NF* thingie, as I was an email list guy, not a message board guy at the time.

NFBSK

"Not For British School Kids"

Uses:
1. In place of a swear word
2. Describing a topic that is obscene, disgusting, or in general "not for kids"

Origin: Circa 1998
At the snopes.com message board, an obviously irate woman posted saying the other posters should watch their language, because there were British school children reading the message board. From then on, as a joke, the other snopesters started using NFBSK in place of swear words or in the subject lines of topics that might not be suitable for children (or the squeamish).
1. I moved one Jenga block and the whole NFBSKing thing fell down!
2. I'll tell you about my surgery, but I must warn you, it might get a little NFBSK.

Earth to NDP: There is no way to provide "government help" without taxpayers paying for it in some way...

Yes there is - reduce taxes. But that's not what the NDP wants.

"The exoplanet explosion

Fifteen years ago, there were virtually no known planets beyond the (then nine) planets in our own solar system: just a few found by chance orbiting a pulsar. Then, in late 1995 and 1996, came the initial discovery of planets orbiting main sequence stars like the Sun. That slow trickle of discoveries became a steady stream as astronomers refined their instruments and techniques, as well as increased both the number of stars studied and their period of time observed. By the beginning of 2010 astronomers reported finding over 400 such extrasolar planets, or exoplanets.

That steady stream of discoveries, though, could become a torrent in the next few years."

“Gunfire rings out from Haitian apocalypse

Sporadic gunfire is echoing across Haiti’s capital, as survivors of Wednesday’s massive earthquake endure a third night on the streets with little food, water or medical supplies.

Anger and despair is mounting in Port-au-Prince, with rotting bodies littering the streets and little sign of desperately needed international aid for the three million people affected by the disaster.

Much of the aid remains at the Haitian capital’s airport and some relief workers and officials say they are too scared to leave the security of the airport until day breaks.

Many on the ground in the Haitian capital say security is desperately needed, as most of the most members of the city’s police force are busy searching for their own relatives.

There are reports of looting and scuffles have broken out as helicopters drop food over parts of the city.

As part of its aid effort, the United States is sending in more than 5,000 troops.

“Haiti earthquake: Thousands struggle for survival in rubble

THE United States is taking charge in earthquake-devastated Haiti as thousands of troops and tonnes of aid begin arriving in the impoverished Caribbean nation.

US President Barack Obama, responding to the first large-scale humanitarian disaster of his presidency, has pledged $US100 million to Haiti with more to come.

“I will not put up with any excuses for us not doing the very best in this time of tragedy,” Mr Obama said.

He announced that the “first waves” of the US response were in place including two search-and-rescue teams on the ground, Coast Guard cutters in the port, the US Southern Command in control of the airport and airlifts bringing in supplies and taking out the injured, the Associated Press reported.

I am looking to donate to the Haiti relief effort but am at a loss as to who will do the most good with my money. I wont give to anything with the UN letters in there name, such as unicef. Maybe someone can post a list of organisations who make a difference without 80 percent overhead costs. Who takes paypal, or cash? Half the problem is who to give to, and how.

Back to more mundane matters.
Since Confederation, Parliament has been proroged
105 times. Yes folks, 105!
Now: Go forth and educate the Pinkos.

Good question wuberman.
Ban Ki Moon announced yesterday that the UN would be coordinating all efforts and they would be working closely with the President,Rene Preval in determining where the relief aid was to be directed. That scares the sh#t out of me.
Personally, I would recommend a local charity that has a direct involvement in Haiti.
As an example, here where I live there is a local charity that has been involved in aid to Haiti for many years. A lot of residents here are involved and spend their hard-earned vacations going there and assisting the locals in improving their lot.
If I decide to donate, it will be to them as they have to be accountable to us locals that keep them in funds. We don't put up with crap for very long and would drop them immeditely if we thought they were being profligate with our donations.
Just a thought.

“‘Hizb ut-Tahrir obsessed with radicalising students’

At universities across the country, Hizb ut-Tahrir operates freely behind a series of “front groups” holding events covertly and spreading its dangerous message of confrontation and separation. In recent years it has become more sophisticated in how it does this, circumventing attempts to clamp down on its activities.

Literature has been produced specifically for universities, presented in soft and temperate tones without any reference to the Hizb ut-Tahrir, and making it difficult to detect its presence. The aim is simple: to disseminate the party’s ideas to the broadest constituency possible while identifying those who are sympathetic to its message. Once sympathisers are spotted, intense pressure is applied on them to join.

Hizb ut-Tahrir is so committed to finding new recruits at universities that during my time as a member (2001-05) a specific “universities team” was created, which co-ordinated and directed the activity of party activists across Britain.”

nv53, of course Horwath wouldn't mention that by law private pensions can not contribute the percentage of these obscene public pensions. I think the old statement "For the Government to give you something they have to take it from someone else." applies here but lefty elitists never see that.

I read a recent article inquiring why Ontario tuition costs had risen so high and rapidly. The reason was purely the massive growth in the administration costs of the universities and colleges with their expanding bureaucracies.

The growth of non-productive government will eventually kill the economy. McGuinty has approved hiring 30,000 more teachers and early child administrators for his expanded full time kindergartens.

No Guff, at least you tried and good for you. I too am amazed at our citizens and their lack of interest in the never-ending assault on their own money. Maybe people just give up.
