Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation, here is a series of three advertisements, from Volkswagen, entitled Unpimp Your Ride ¤, II ¤, and III ¤. Watch them twice: first to experience the intended impact, and then again, preferably at full- screen size, stopping and starting them over & over to produce freeze- frame effects. Notice the backgrounds & the foregrounds, the staging, and the actions you missed the first time. Notice the production values. What a species! And to be so rich as a civilization to be able to spend our massive intelligence on such details: That's the real luxury.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Vitruvius there's a selection of them with Helga leading the way, let the punishments begin... I'll "try" to be good. ;)

there is a part 2 as well. although my all time favorite is the new BMW 3 convertible with an Italian flair...

Holy crap! Where did you find that original Monty Python sketch?

C'mon, now, admit it, "Vitruvius" is really Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear.

That video link you posted, Marc, isn't from Volkswagen, not that there's anything wrong with that, other than that your use of the word them in that context was, I think, confusing. Anyway, your computer- generated video does indeed focus the point I was trying to make about the production values in the real VW commercials. The team that produced that product was firing on all cylinders. What they were doing has its, how shall we say, moral strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes, as in tonight's shows, the result is funny. Sometimes tens of millions die.

We last saw that German actor feeding Steve Buscemi into a wood chipper in Fargo. Good ads. Germans taking the mickey out of themselves.

This morning, I got up, did some exercises and then retrieved the newspapaer ...brrrr///cold///

To my surprise, in The National Post, I see an article by Rex Muephy, a man who you do not want to meet in a dark philosophical alley.

Apparently, and I have no links of evidence, he has been fired from the liberal media for his climate skeepticism.

Welcome to the cold/right/natural side, FRex.

That Four Yorkshiremen sketch with Marty Feldman is pre-Python, Piper Paul, it was on the At Last The 1948 Show. Those guys worked together on various productions before Monty got on the road; there is an Oxford background to the story if I'm not mistaken. I think, old chap, that the I'm Sorry I'll Read that Again troupe, featuring Bill Oddie, Graeme Garden, Tim Brooke-Taylor, David Hatch, Jo Kendall, and the inimitable John Cleese were likely in on the mix too, eh what old boy?

Vitruvius...
the link in my commentary is a series of shorts put together by the same people that did the Tv ads for VW, those folks ordering a GTi through the VW GTi's site would click through the 500 choices to be made, with Helga all the way... They weren't Tv ads, but they were part of VW's advertising on their GTi website, hence Helga pointing out the plaid seat covers, the shifter, the heating that needed to be adjusted for her "headlights"....

from the people that put the ads together, (this quote is about half way down the rather long page)..

"... led to Helga, an over-the-top parody of a German nightclubbing valkyrie. She is in ads -- and stars in VW's GTI Web site. Anyone configuring a GTI, choosing interior, wheels, engine, and the like, can take a virtual test drive with the boot-wearing siren, who comments about each driver's selections. "I see from your paddle shifters, you're ready to go." And, "I luf leather." There are some 500 variations of GTI, and Helga can talk you through them all".

I think the Tv ads are gold.

Vitruvius - I just very recently discovered that dear, departed Marty Feldman co-wrote The Four Yorkshiremen sketch. I somehow lazily assumed that the wonderful thing had seeped out of the mists of time, like... well, like something seepy.

I couldn't manage to link to a funny clip from The Young Frankentein, so I have only humble praise to offer.

Cool, Marc, thanks for the explanation. The change
from live humans to computer-generated confused me.

Ve got Vit in de house.Oo.Ya

Oh snap! SDA Engineering: in da house. Ya. ;-)

Thanks, marc.

Hump or no hump, there's certainly something to be said for having an enormous schwanstucker.

I know Helga feels the same.

well... except for this gal, it's possible to have too large a schwanzstucker...

Vit, would that be the VW or Helga?

The insanity (from above)

Read that one this morning. A key paragraph:

Although the pine beetle epidemic has peaked, it will likely take a decade before the scales will tip back again. When a tree succumbs to a bug infestation, it begins to release greenhouse gases as it decomposes – a process that can take half a century. That's just half the problem. Those forests are no longer helping absorb carbon from the atmosphere. In 2009, the resulting footprint of the beetle-killed wood in B.C. was 74 megatonnes of CO2 equivalent. The oil sands next door generated 38 megatonnes.

What the heck do they expect will happen to trees when they die either from old age or pine beetles??

They de-compose.

And give back the CO2 that they absorbed in their living years.

Good choice, Vit.

Pleasingly eclectic, as usual.

Oliver Stone's 'Secret History' to put Hitler 'in context'
Director Oliver Stone's upcoming Showtime documentary miniseries "Secret History of America" promises to put mass murderers such as Stalin and Hitler "in context."...Stone eventually hopes to send "Secret History" to schools as a teaching curriculum.

There are two Evils so great that even Stone will not attempt to "walk in their shoes"

Rush Limbaugh is not going to like this history and, as usual, we're going to get those kind of ignorant attacks
A critic also asked Stone "the Sarah Palin question" of what he likes to read. "My father was a voracious New York Times reader," he said. "We consider that in The Middle. Sarah Palin would disagree."

This will mean Chavez's D8's will cost a lot more to be imported.

" CARACAS, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Venezuelans rushed to the shops on Saturday, fearful of price rises after a currency devaluation that will let President Hugo Chavez boost government spending ahead of an election but feeds opposition charges of economic mismanagement.

In a bid to jump-start the recession-hit economy of South America's top oil exporter, Chavez on Friday announced a dual system for the fixed rate bolivar.

It devalues the currency to 4.3 and 2.6 against the dollar, from a rate of 2.15 per dollar in place since 2005, giving the better rate for basic goods in an attempt to limit the impact of the measure on consumer prices.

The devaluation is politically risky but means every dollar of oil revenue puts more bolivars in government coffers. That allows Chavez to lavish cash on social projects and fund salary increases ahead of parliamentary elections in September."

Good for 'Rex Murphy'. Hope that he is one of the people selected for a Senate seat. We need more opinionated people in there.

Here's a slightly more in depth look at the latest devaluation in Venezuela from an economist in Caracas

http://devilsexcrement.com/2010/01/09/hugo-chavez-has-his-own-economic-red-friday-as-he-devalues-the-currency-63-7/

note in this article and at Reuters, the exchange rate is what the government is granting to those that want official dollars, this week on friday, the real exchange rate finished at 1/ 6.25, so next week promises to be a roller coaster with exchanges all over the map.
It gives Chavez some breathing room, but makes anything not on the government approved list quite expensive, and squeezes private company's imports with a leap this year in dollar costs north of 60%. With the addition of inflation being compounded by this recent influx of Bolivars, it should finish the year 2010 at about 100% increases... This is in addition to whatever increases incur in the U.S.

Fred,
a note regarding the Reuters link you provided... under the article are 2 links regarding a U.S. Navy airplane said by Chavez to have recently (1 week past?) intruded into Venezuelan airspace.
In the Venezuelan press, Chavez held a photo up stating he had proof (a proof is a proof, and when you have a good proof it is because it is proven?) of this incursion, while bloggers soon found the photo was first uploaded to wikipedia in 2005.

Yes, wallyj they do think the detainees BS is a winner. How about their ads apparently mentioning "torture coverups."

Canadians genuinely grieve over soldiers' deaths, while admiring their courage and dedication. Is the LPC so politically bankrupt they must pin their hopes on (virtually non-existent) military misconduct?

And their solution is? Well, we should just do a better job, you know, not be so mean spirited about the whole thing, and prorogue parliament, for the 104th time.

IOW they have zip (along with the NDP) for alternative courses of action, as explained below:

http://www.torontosun.com/comment/columnists/john_snobelen/2010/01/10/12408781-sun.html

Well fine, if this is their issue, let it be their political graveyard.

and one more kick at that can Fred... :)
It always seems to be a small victory for the blogger world to get noticed by the big boys in media, the blogger Miguel Octavio that I provided a link to above, was used as source material in today's front page / national edition of "el Nacional" in Venezuela. Kate has often commented that SDA gets results / gets noticed ... and it's on that note that this is worth a link to. It's in spanish, but you can get the gist of it from seeing the front page here...

Media & coalition driving prorogation outrage

Sandy has a good point. The CBC is loaded with anti-prorogue 'news'...Libs don't need fundraising when they can get free publicity on CBC.
My concern as always are the uninformed and ill-informed who take CBC and CTV as 'gospel'.
Just to clarify..I listen in the car just to keep up with the propaganda machine. And if we were a military family I'd be chilled to the bone with the subtle accusations of torture in those Lib ads!
