Welcome to the Wednesday (EBD) edition of SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, as we near the end of a prolonged cold snap, we treat ourselves to the warm, dulcet tones of Spike Jones and Red Ingle, as they tug at our heartstrings with a caring, sharing performance of You Always Hurt The One You Love. (Album version here.)

You are invited, as always, to provide your Reader Tips in the comments.

As Kate noted in a previous post, 20,000 people joined the Facebook page "Canadians Against Proroguing Parliament", after which the Star printed a front-page story headlined "Grassroots Fury Greets Shuttered Parliament."

The NP editorial board provides further numerical context:

"...let’s look at some other causes that also got a six-digit response (on Facebook): Almost 300,000 people have joined a group encouraging rocker John Mellencamp to quit smoking. Another hundred thousand people have joined a group encouraging random people to move to Finland. A whopping half-million people have used the power of Facebook to declare that they enjoy the television program 90210.

"And then there’s our personal favourite: A group called 'If 100,000 people join this group, Laura will name her son Megatron' recently met its goal..."

Vitruvius, I'm guessing that it's this guy. Apparently five times as many people joined a Facebook page calling for a woman they've never met to name her son "Megatron" than joined a page opposed to the prorogation of Parliament. "Grassroots Fury Times Five," I suppose.

On that note, Here's a CBC article (a commenter linked to it on another threat) from November 13, 2003:

"Prime Minister Jean Chrétien prorogued Parliament on Thursday, making it possible for Paul Martin to take the helm on Jan. 12, when the Commons and the Senate are expected to be called back...."

The report contains not one mote of anger or outrage, nor any suggestion that the prorogation was either inappropriate, evidence of power-madness, or a blow to democracy. How very odd. (*cough cough*)

And instantly Vit was TRANSFORMED!!!!

"rocker" John Mellencamp?

Vit: This one is a tad "disappointing!!"

On the local Vancouver TV news tonight there was a story about how hotel rooms are becoming free during the Olympics and how homeowners thinking they were going to cash in for big $$$$$ bucks are finding a different reality.

I kind of suspected this would happen.

Just a bit of a pet peeve for me or perhaps it's a tell of some underlying bias on the reporters part in the article:

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Politics/2010/01/06/12362516-sun.html

in the above, the author calls the alberta Tory party the "PC" party. However when he abbreviates the wildrose alliance party - which he does several times he calls it the "WAP". Clearly (or from my perspective at least) WAP is a far less attractive-sounding acronym than PC. Why didn't he call them the PCP? or conversely the WA?

Not really a "Reader Tip", but more a case of "Reader Ticked".

Is anyone else sick to death of Donald Sutherland's Olympic commercials? Especially the one for the downhill skier - "He's a new breed of Canadian skier.. reckless..". What, did Donald never hear of Ken Read and Steve Podborski, the original "Crazy Canucks"? This isn't on the same scale as denying our WWI and WWII efforts, but it's just another example of burying Canadian history.

Turtle, re: naked hockey player statue...

I find the whole idea weird on so many levels. besides the waste of taxpayer's money, jokes about "cold enough to freeze the... off a bronze statue", even some appendages "turtling" in the cold, I have to ask: What's with the helmet?

Impaired drivers always hurt the one you love. A video that is still appropriate after the Christmas season.

"Fla. cops: Man threatening Jews taken off flight

MIAMI (AP) -- Police say an airline passenger in Miami proclaimed "I want to kill all the Jews" before officers forced him off a Detroit-bound plane.

Miami-Dade police said in a statement Thursday that 43-year-old Mansor Mohammad Asad of Toledo, Ohio, was arrested. He faces several charges including disorderly conduct.

Police say a taxiing Northwest Airlines flight turned around at Miami International Airport late Wednesday. Authorities say witnesses told them Asad was loud, disruptive and claimed to be Palestinian.

The Transportation Security Administration says three of his companions were also taken off the plane and questioned.

My last comment never made it to post; I'll try again with an updated comment: Over 70,000 people have posted on Facebook now against the proroguing of parliament. How many of these people are the same one's who mocked direct democracy through plebiscites (ie Rick Mercer's attempt to change Stockwell Day's name)? Is the irony and hypocracy escaping them?

"Britain’s biggest freeze for decades"
...-

"Weather-related death toll rises to 22 as Britain braces for coldest night yet

The death toll from Britain’s biggest freeze for decades reached 22 today as the country prepared for its coldest night so far, bringing the promise of even more treacherous conditions.

Thousands of homes have been left without power, schools have closed and travellers have faced chaos as the weather hit roads, rail services and airports over the last two days. The disruption is estimated to have cost businesses around £700 million."

"Meanwhile, the shutdown of an offshore Norwegian gasfield pushed Britain's gas infrastructure into emergency mode, forcing the closure of industrial companies in the north of England in order to preserve supplies to homes, shops and offices."

ever wonder why the Cons are subsidizing Air Canada so heavily? So do most Canadians.....
The pride of the Emirates Airline fleet routinely fills more than 90 per cent of its 489 seats to and from Dubai, sharing a near-capacity load with the United Arab Emirates other carrier, Etihad Airlines.

For 11 years now, Emirates Air has been screaming protest at a full throttle roar, demanding permission to bring daily flights to Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver only to be told by Transport Canada there's no demand for increased service.....

What's doubly bizarre is how wide and deep the support is for this particular airline's service to expand. Transport Minister John Baird has been bombarded with pleas from western premiers, mayors, MPs from all parties, Toronto business interests and tourism officials to boost gravity-defying links to the Middle East.

Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach is travelling to Dubai next week for an energy conference and to meet with UAE airlines to discuss ways to increase pressure for direct flights to Calgary.

Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier has met repeatedly with airline officials and sounds fed up with the footdragging. "They've got the fleet, they're willing to take the risk, they want to come to Calgary and we want them," he told me. "We need the federal negotiators to get the deal done. If we really believe in open skies, let's open them up."

Influential Calgary area MP Ted Menzies argues the airline's plans fit with his government's current focus. "This is a no risk, no cost proposition for our government that would provide an immediate economic stimulus."

The best Transport Canada can come up with to explain its reluctance to approve daily service -- and it took its spokesperson two days to find her speaking notes -- is "there is no shortage of seats to meet the demand".

That's code for Air Canada protectionism, even though the airline doesn't fly to Dubai. It does, however, have partner links to Dubai through London or Frankfurt.

Anyone who flies regularly knows the screw on fares. So why does cell service get actual competition introduced, but air travel doesn't?

What did 'ol Jimby Prentice start at Caledonia when he initiated large scale race based application of the law?

Best line: "The couple's Argyle St. South home, which plummeted in value from an estimated $400,000 to between $50,000 and $75,000, will now be owned by the province"

HAMILTON–The taxpayer bill for the simmering land dispute with Six Nations protesters in Caledonia is $64.3 million and counting.

The running tab, according to Ontario's Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs, does not include $15.8 million the province paid for the former Douglas Creek Estates, which was seized and occupied on Feb. 28, 2006 by protesters from the nearby Six Nations reserve.

Ottawa kicked in $26.4 million to reimburse Queen's Park for the cost of purchasing the residential subdivision that was then under construction. The money included $10.6 million to offset extraordinary policing costs.

The tab also does not include the recent out-of-court settlement between the Ontario government and a Caledonia couple, Dana Chatwell and Dave Brown, who were suing the province and OPP for $7 million for abandoning them to the lawlessness that surrounded the disputed 27-hectare site adjacent to their home.

Far be it for me to ever accuse the tax-payer funded cbc for wallowing in liberal slop, but doesn't this headline on Kady O'Malley's blog reek of bias,---Extra Bonus EKOS: Prorogation Polling Goodness!---http://www.cbc.ca/politics/insidepolitics/2010/01/extra-bonus-ekos-prorogation-polling-goodness.html

Yeah, Kady and the CBC are taking off the gloves; it's all-out war.

It's simply unacceptable to the lib-leftists that Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his CPC government might be within striking distance of a majority.

IT. CAN'T. HAPPEN.

To them, it would be a total disaster. So, they're going for broke. To Hell with reporting the news; they're going to be an unabashed cheering section -- if it's possible to be more of one -- for the Liberal$ or the Coalition of Three Amigos -- or whatever it takes to block Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his party from forming a majority government.

What country is this again?

This is just limp from the git go. So tired of the lies:

Canada's Arctic meltdown grows at alarming pace

http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/747290--canada-s-arctic-meltdown-grows-at-alarming-pace

Revnant Dream,

Global warming is a diversion and as you say 'limp'.

We humans have great egos. In reality it is pompous to equate ourselves to the scale of solar activity and the magnitude of events like the exhaust from mount Saint Hellens.

Elsewhere, Steve asked, " Is it too late? Is the damage beyond repair?"

Not at all.

Warming is just a diversion Steve. There is all kinds of hope, but the true issue is world pollution.

Pollution is far more tangible, [read: measurable]. You could more easily measure pollution from each industry and levy fair fees for air and water effluent.

That's why government and industry will focus on the nebulous term 'global warming'. Less specific.

There is hope because we humans are very small on a globe where the oceans are what, seven or eight times the size of landmass?

Volcanic eruptions like that of Mount Saint Hellens spews far larger servings of noxious gases more quickly than we humans do.

We do contribute to global warming though, yet it is a mix where solar cycles and nature have more effect.

More worrisome are the poisons we make to kill insects. Chemical companies can not take back their bug killers that are TOO effective.

If you are older like me, you may have noticed that today there are fewer mosquitoes, butterflies and shadflies. Partly good, but dangerously bad also.

Vast colonies of honey bees are falling victim to 20 or more maladies at one time so that a reversal or cure is not humanly possible.

Families in China travel about to pollinate orchards by hand using feathers on long sticks.

Tractor trailers travel about North America with cargoes of bee hives that are rented to pollinate crops mostly in the Eastern USA and Canada.

You may have noticed that many towns and cities are passing bylaws to prohibit use of insecticides, especially lawn weed treatment chemical mixes. Guess why.

Toxic wastes from storm sewers make their way down rivers to the oceans. I doubt that fish and whales would thank us for that.

There is hope though. If we curtail our chemical poisons, [ seems we are starting on that], and adopt Electric Vehicles, [ and we are ], there should be a better environment for us humans and the bees, not to mention the birds who eat the poisoned bugs.

You heard about the 'plastic islands' floating out in the oceans. I wonder if wealthy nations have agreed to pay for cleanup of that mess. TG

Nature problems vs. nourishing problems

Environmental study change (can be pollution change or climate change)

Solution to climate change is nature:
Such as more research done:

to save the planet from climate change balance water and soil and land transfer such as funny can possible by shred the mountain soils then transfer to ice melting space ground and transfer the water and ice melting to replace mountain ground level to balance land and water in earth relocation

Pollution solution is man made nourishing: come right from manufacture engineering stand point that engineer who built all kind of machinery from car to any processed food can fix their emission control to begin with that is prevention program in future

Then how human can live in land or water also can be study long our ancestor live in mountain kind of desert or ship now change to live in both areas surface can be survival in both disasters if happened

Do we need too many Whales or snakes or wild animals?

Animal need food control and birth control
Food intake.

1. Most baleen whales spend about four to six months in the summer feeding intensively in high-latitude, productive waters and then spend the next six to eight months traveling and breeding.

2. Scientists estimate that large baleen whales eat about 4% of their body weight each day during the feeding season.

a. A blue whale eats up to 3,600 kg (8,000 lb.) of krill each day for about 120 days. It is estimated to take 1,000 kg (2,200 lb.) of food to fill a blue whale's stomach.

b. Gray whales eat about 150,000 kg (340,000 lb.) of food during a 130 to 140 day feeding period--a daily average of about 1,089 kg (2,400 lb.) . It is estimated to take 300 kg (660 lb.) of food to fill a gray whale's stomach.

3. Food intake during the feeding season exceeds daily requirements and excess energy is stored in the blubber layer. For example, gray whales gain about 16% to 30% of their total body weight during a feeding season. Blubber gained during the feeding season sustains the whale during the winter months when food is scarce.

4. During the traveling and breeding seasons, baleen whales eat much less or not at all. Winter daily feeding rate is only about 0.4% of body weight.
we need ANIMAL birth control so as human birth control when land is limited in some areas
we need to collect all danger animals for safty of human and used
wild animals or not used animals to their skin or any feed other small animals
and focus in animals for food consupmtion too

basically animal controls

how many dog must live in city how to prevent thier cleaness of city to have more dog or have more children all need review by ethic and environmental group and Need and grow or reduce thier number of animals for the security, more food for human consumption or use for thier skin like cow used thier skin now

=====
Do we need all animals
if some big fish kill so many fish consum by human may be we need to reduced number of those animals

do we need snake and all reptile to feed them
or danger for society
or only keep snake for only use thier skin for shoes in special place and collect them from desert and jungle

we need more beef lamb, goat and chicken and poultry and less other animals

other animals need to control if we can not use them or help environment
