No Negro Dialect, Unless He Wants One

What would we do without pundits? A full three days into the controversy, someone finally stumbles across the fact that Harry "light skinned" Reid wasn't talking about Obama.

Rush Limbaugh got it right with the moniker 'Dingy Harry'

I'm not a democrat or Liberal so I will not claim to speak for anyone other than myself.
My perception for decades has been that racism usually is the reserve of negroes, people of colour, afro-americans, blacks or whatever label they currently apply.

But but Blago is blacker than Obama. He grew up near a black neighbourhood.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2010/01/blago-im-blacker-than-obama.html

The usual liberal projection? After all, their view of flyover America is one of poor ignorant folks clinging to their guns and religion. That's why they need a big government to look after them.

Voters are starting to see through the "Bush Bush Bush Bush" thread running through virtually all of The One's utterances. Likewise, the Republicans should drop the light-skinned-Negro-dialect gaffe, let Reid and the Democrats own it, and let voters make their own decision.

In my view Harry Reid didn't say anything that isn't obvious to everyone.

The "left" is always going to play the race card when it benefits them; so, that leaves two options for the "right": 1- ignore the ridicule and false accusations of racism. This would require the "right" to stick together and grow a pair which isn't going to happen. 2- quit whining about it! The constant whining from the "right" regarding the uneven playing field with respect to media and politically correct standards is pitiful.

If the "left" continue to patronize minorities and take them for granted, we can only hope that eventually individuals will start to vote as individuals and not as a voting block. Other than that, I recommend that the "right" quit whining about what is not fair and focus on winning.

Had Reid said something that is actually racist, he would pay politically. The fact is, he stated the truth and the "right" is choked because they don't have the ballz to do the same; which, is why the Republicans are in such dismal shape in the first place.

You know, I think his remarks had more to do with his sexual preference than his racial bias. People have a habit of mistaking the former, for the latter. Sexual preference can no longer be questioned, in public service, so long as it falls within legal boundaries. If Reid were to just come out, and admit his true feelings, he'd probably be a hero to a lot of democrats.

DB, I disagree. I think that one of the biggest tactical errors conservative politicians make is allowing the left write the rules on language. They need to push hard on this stuff and start holding them to the same cherry-picked standards they and the media have set for anyone who opposes them.

Only when political correctness becomes a double edged sword will it begin to lose effectiveness.

I disagree Kate. The challenge is to ignore the ridiculous statements from the "left" and let the public decide. The public doesn't need the "right" pointing the finger like a tattle-tail at the left, like the "left" is prone to do to the right. People who prefer that tactic have their minds made-up anyways.

The GOP need to focus on message and tangible ideas that will result in tangible results. The rest is a sideshow that will not benefit them at all.

I agree with you about the language issue, but I think that the "left" hasn't gained any real-estate that the "right" didn't concede on this issue.

This is not about whether Obama is a thin skinned black man or a black skinned thin man, it is about the hypocrisy existant in letting Dingy Harry get away with it.

Yeah, Indiana, so business as usual:

When the left says "You're a bigot", we say "no I'm not!"

And, when the left says "You're a redneck", we say "no I'm not!"

How's that been working for us?

This whole issue puts conservatives in a very difficult position.

On the one hand, we seek to employ the same speech-police mentality that the liberals are constantly using - by turning their own weapon against them.

However - in doing so, we tacitly buy into the same stupid conduct that is destroying free thought - and are abandoning the arguement that people should be able to express their views openly, and not be asked to lose their job because of it.

The politically correct speech-chill is an illness of modern liberal society and do we really advance our interests when we ascribe to it ourselves?

Better perhaps someone like Orrin Hatch jumps to his aid, and points out that he simply stated an opinion regarding the place of race in the election. Which he and every American should be entitled to do under the first amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

"How's that been working for us?"

I agree, you can't win playing defense. I think it was Steyn who said the usual image of the Republican - or Conservative - was an amiable old white guy who made good concession speeches.
Time to be on offensive mode. It's great to think you can be reasonable and restrained and wait for people to notice the difference, but they don't, because they don't get a chance.
I think the conservative cause is better on the merits, but sometimes, unfortunately, volume counts too.

What conservatives need to do is demand equal treatment. Trent Lott got booted out for similar comments -- so should Reid. (via mark steyn at NRO).

The left sees its racist opinions as rational realpolitik that they see as not causing any harm and therefore not racist. They see those on the right making similar statements as making them with malice as a motive.

Gord:
"Trent Lott got booted out for similar comments -- so should Reid. (via mark steyn at NRO)."

Why on earth would you want him to go? Let to voters of Nevada give him the boot. Let the (D)s off the hook like Dodd, and they might hold Nevada in November.

There are good arguments on both sides; however, the reality is both pragmatic, i.e. there's no practical way for conservatives to advance the attack further, and philosophical, i.e. do we really want to get into the P.C. Gotcha Game that we'll lose anyway.

The Democrats are already in full counter-attack mode:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0110/31340.html

Of course, one of the offical self-appointed spokespersons for the African-American community has already accepted Dingy Harry's apology. Ann Coulter has fun asking Sharpton if Reid asked him to stop talking in "Negro dialect."

letting it ride...is not an option (though it should be) because we can look at global warming and see just were ignoring a issue has gotten us on that one

I don't see any racism in what dingy harry said, just that if acon had said it there would be h3ll breaking loose on the progressive side of the ilse, we need to do the same to them, and more is better, till they see the folly of their constant "racism" charges

"How's that been working for us?"

Better than the alternative, the “lefts” constant beating of this mule has made it laughable. In my experience the term “racist” is predominantly used in political discussions only. In reality, the term is almost nonexistent and meaningless. Anecdotally speaking, I can’t recall outside of politics or the media someone being called racist who wasn’t proud of it in a long time. People know what real racism looks like, and what we’re discussing isn’t it.

Politics aside, it’s been my observation that people from many minorities are aggravated by the same PC nonsense. We will not have success fighting the PC monster as a rightwing collective, we must fight it as individuals everyday with our actions. Moving as a group with “talking points” enables the “left” to target us. One of the ways I do this is by speaking to my kids when the PC monster rears its ugly head, which is all the time. The first step for me is making sure my kids are not the ones pointing their fingers every time they hear something they don’t like. I’ve spent countless hours explaining to my kids that someone they disagree with isn’t a racist, and how dangerous it is to throw labels like that around.

"I am what you say I am, and if I wasn't, then why would I say I am"-eminem

Finally, what exactly are we looking for anyways? The right to say stupid isht like the Liberals and the Democrats; or for them(Dems,Libs,MSM) to grow-up and realize they're doing the same thing and stop.

Both of these wishes seem a little bit out there to me.

Indiana Homez
Alinsky's Rules for Radicals
Rule 4: Make opponents live up to their own book of rules. “You can kill them with this, for they can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity.”

Rule 5: Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It’s hard to counterattack ridicule, and it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage.

Rule 11: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, polarize it. Don’t try to attack abstract corporations or bureaucracies. Identify a responsible individual. Ignore attempts to shift or spread the blame.

The Leftist bullies are aghast that we are using their own rules against them with affect.

They're hurtin', and I'm luvin' it.

I don't know about political correctness being a "double edged sword". It seems to me that a bullying methodology whose aim is to disable free speech and more importantly free thought just can't work for conservatives, assuming that we do have principles; not joining the lefties on the dark side etc.

I am however in favour of pointing what a bunch of grotesque hypocrites they are, and demanding that they hand over Reid's head on a platter out of sheer embarrassment if that is at all possible.

Black Mamba,
Alinsky's Rules worked nicely for the Tea Partiers.
Fight fire with fire.
Turnabout is fair play, says I.

I don't see how using Alinsky's Rules disables free speech unless that is your aim.
I see using their rules as a new dimension in conservative expression because, after all, we have always had the facts on our side but have lost repeatedly because of the general insistence on using Queensbury rules.
(see John McCain, polite loser extraordinaire)

Oz - I'm not talking about conceding graciously or wearily, or just not bothering to try, a la McCain. I don't want to bring a Gentleman's Guide to Boxing to a street-fight, but then I also don't want to crawl viciously into the legalistic gutter, the way Queensbury himself did to get Wilde (pretentious, moi?)

Look, political correctness can't work for us because it's everything we're meant to be against. If we don't stand against bullies who thrive off the back of totalitarian lies than I don't know what "conservative" means - can't relate anymore. I'm looking for a metaphor I can't find, possibly because I'm full of cold-meds.

This administration is demonstrably rotten, and we can let them reveal themselves and use the info to beat them into the ground. We don't need no stinkin' Saul Alinsky.

(Well actually Wilde sued Queensbury, under extreme provocation - they were both jerks, really - look, ignore me, I won't post at length if at all anymore today. Very sleepy. Bandwidth guilt $ coming Kate's way.)

I am with Kate and Oz - fight fire with fire - fight like Zell Miller did in 2004:

Kerry/BHO; same ilk.

O'It's O's Fault.

A black day for O.

"“It’s Bush’s Fault” Statistically Dies As An Effective Excuse

Can't oppose Iraq anymore 'cause Obama and Dems are responsible for winning or losing it now.

Can't blame Bush anymore.

Can't boast about a single accomplishment other than bankrupting the nation for generations

Gosh...what will Dems do for the next 9.75 months?

Perhaps the greatest measure of Obama's declining support is that just 50% of voters now say they prefer having him as President to George W. Bush, with 44% saying they'd rather have his predecessor.

Black Mamba,
Conservatism means preserving our way of life, which is a strategic goal.

Alinsky's Rules are a means to a political end, they are tactics, not strategy.
As such, they are effective tactics in this down and dirty world where communist sockpuppets like Obama have become President of the U.S.A. and Eurocentric Communism is seeking to control every aspect of our lives through the hoax of Global Warming.

Learning to use all effective tactics to achieve governmental victory to preserve strategic goals and quality of life values is the only way to politic.

Politics is the art of seeing your values are preserved and promoted above the opposing values of the other guy.
If your political values are truly superior they will not only become culture, if they already were'nt already, they will be voluntarily sustainable by grassroots economic reality.

You compromise with people who recognize and share your values, you fight down and dirty with zero compromise against those who would destroy those values you hold dear.

The Left uses an old negotiating tactic of making a list of demands which are increasingly radical from 1-10 or 1-100 knowing that the more radical the demand the more it will be feared and that the people they negotiate with will give up things that they shouldn't just to lay to rest the more fearful radical demands that shouldn't even be considered at all.

Leftists know they can't even hope a lot of their demands will be ceded to and the scary crazy demands are on the negotiation list just so they can throw them away and claim that they have compromised by throwing ridiculous demands away!

Conservatives do not negotiate this way just because we don't want to look radical and because we are negotiating in good faith with opponents who aren't.

We need over-the-top conservative-wet-dream throw-away demands to make when we negotiate too, but don't have any politicians with the spine to do the hard negotiating which recognition of the reality on the ground requires.

Nothing Leftists do is in good faith.
How do you think we got to the place we are at with the Global Warming Cult?
It's by following a polite Queensbury rules one-way ratchet to a Brave New World.

Black Mamba get some sleep and be well.

Sarah Palin is a diamond in the rough and Fox is going to show us all just how hard and beautiful she can really be.

Sarah Palin on Fox is going to produce endless blogfodder.
Yeeeee-Haaaw, ya'all!

I have always, since first reading him, felt that Joseph Conrad was one of the best writers in the English language (especially given it was his 3rd language), though he would probably be considered dated now. He wrote a shorter story called "The Ni**er of the Narcissus " (in case it won't go through the filter) and I went to the Burnaby library to get an edition. I did make a point of keeping my voice slightly lowered as I made my request to the librarian. I thought she would swallow her tongue, but to her credit she didn't overreact but refused to repeat the word as she typed it into her computer saying "The hmm .. of the Narcissus". In Conrad's time that was probably the proper word for describing people of "black" skin, negro or negra meaning black and Nigeria I suspect got its name from the fact that it was where black skinned people came from. I don't particularly like being called red-neck or fascist or doggan for that matter, but I'm not about to make a federal case of it.

Obama is hurtin':
