Well Tommy,if Sputnic made Americas future,it bankrupted the Soviet Union. It wasnt Sputnic that made America,it was individuals rising to challenges.America did the same with Japan. Its next big challenge will be ensuring Taiwans independence. Which China will contest.
This is my first read of Friedman and he seems to write a lot of what we conservatives support. Personal responsibility, education in hard sciences and engineering, not fighting unwinnable battles for other countries and facing muslim terrorism head on rather than attacking our own people and society.
Perhaps I had better read more on him if I have the wrong picture.
Sorry Dave, he's a protectionist and an isolationist, perhaps a "Ron Paul conservative" but definitely not a modern conservative. It's been my observation that lefties will disingenuously evoke conservative sounding arguments to support unrelated discussions. Also, declaring a war "un- winnable" as an excuse to surrender or not fight at all, is a tactic used solely by the "left".
we would be taking $100 billion out of the Pentagon budget to make us independent of imported oil
Got news for you Tom... If you REALLY want energy independence for America, it's less about money and more about removing regulations and legislation which prevents drilling as well as not being picky about shale oil (tar sands, oil sands, etc).
I'm sorry, but being as conservative as I am, I would like to see the US really cut the defence budget and bring its troops home from South Korea, Europe etc. We can't have the Americans continually doing the work others should be doing.
Yes, take 100 Billion ANNUALLY from the US defense budget and build NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS! Also, build clean coal Fischer-Tropsche (sp?) plants to produce jet and diesel.
Unfortunately, the lefties will want to put up those stupid, @#$%ing windmills all over the place and then will complain when they have brown outs and the wine fridge doesn't work.
Yeeesh. Why does the solution to every problem have to involve a massive government programs? It's about as effective as the Twinkie diet.
How about doing the opposite: Make the U.S. more competitive by reducing regulation, taxes, trade barriers, and government. And improve education by jettisoning all the politically correct goo that's jamming up the machinery.
Ok I wanna know when the likes of Friedman and Charlie Rose and Donohue took over the world. I would even watch Donohue because hey there would be Milton Friedman. But still opinion was always like the Saturday comics when I was kid. It's cotton candy. What the heck happened.
Then with Donohue and Rose types imagine talking to the likes of Robert Shiller or some other obscure but magnificently interesting people then alas along would come the movie stars. Because its free publicity. Imagine a show where you could talk to the most interesting people on the planet and they always end up spending most of their time talking to the dumbest people on the planet.
Why China tries to monopolise oil concessions in in Asia, supports coup d'etat government in Iran and corners trade in raw materials from Africa?
Why do you think China is building military outposts all over Asia? They are building ports or having agreements with other governments aiming to control sea-routes. Being able to control sea is a part of strategic control of the world economy (majority of trade is going by sea) and it is also a major part of being able to win a conventional wars.
And you want US to go inward.
Tell me: what happened to Japan couple of years after it went isolationist?
Um, Tommy Boy (obviously, they made the movie with Friedman in mind), how, exactly, would $100 billion make the US independent from foreign oil?
Given that the US imports (as of Oct/09), about 3.5 million barrels per day from Canada and Mexico combined, at $75/bbl, that works out to roughly $250 million a day, or about $90 billion a year. Given that Canada and Mexico account for about 1/3 of US oil imports, that means $180 billion a year is going to other countries. So, how does $100b save you $270b in oil exports?
Or did he just pull the number out of his ass, much as RFK JR SX did with his "nearly all fish in Alberta are unsafe to eat"?
The Pax American is unsustainable, unless all of the countries that enjoy the protection of the United States would like to ante up.
America is hopelessly in debt and I find it very hard to understand why a boy from Oklahoma, Georgia, Montana or Vermont has to protect everyone around the world when they won't step up and protect themselves.
The United States can still maintain the exceptional Naval Power that it has, even enhance it. Which would make any venture accross the Straits of Formosa a suicidal gesture.
As it is now, China is growing economically and militarily (thank you Bill Clinton) and creating trouble throughout the world and their seems to be no repercussions. Ella, will you send your son to free Tibet?
Evil needs no reason to boast with preening mane.
I have no problems with hard working folks living high on the hog who earn it. I applaud it in fact for the industry created by these individuals. Even an ox is worth its feed.
The fact this guy makes money on our tax dollars for creating a political fairytale to enrich himself with lies. At the very people who have supported him for years. Wealth

He sure lives his socialist dogma. He's grand, the mass is stupid & musty be herded by such as he because of our dimness.

pay particular attention to the part about the aircraft used in the CIA black ops. that's right, where they crash whilst transporting tonnes of cocaine, ya, that part.
Why this blog? Until this moment
I have been forced
to listen while media

have told me
"what Canadians think".
In all that time they
never once asked.

I thought he had a nice shot at Obama and his followers:

I never knew Friedman was a conservative.

Anyone foolish enough to be considering such a notion better get used to the following concept:
Chinese military domination.
But that's usually what makes a leftard like Friedman all tingly in his widdle weg.
Doug, said "Chinese military domination." Unfortunately this, as well as Chinese economic domination is the future.

Every time I see that house the first thing that comes to mind is... what is it's population?
Friedman should watch a session of Parliament from Taiwan sometime and see how that is working out for them.
It is like watching a hockey game, fights and all.

He ignores the fact that the Chinese execute their islamo-fascists and send the army in.

speaking of things pentagon and war, nixon was a republican, right?
look what has become of his 'war on drugs'. closely related to the reagan era simplistic 'just say no'
