This is my first read of Friedman and he seems to write a lot of what we conservatives support. Personal responsibility, education in hard sciences and engineering, not fighting unwinnable battles for other countries and facing muslim terrorism head on rather than attacking our own people and society.

Perhaps I had better read more on him if I have the wrong picture.

Sorry Dave, he's a protectionist and an isolationist, perhaps a "Ron Paul conservative" but definitely not a modern conservative. It's been my observation that lefties will disingenuously evoke conservative sounding arguments to support unrelated discussions. Also, declaring a war "un- winnable" as an excuse to surrender or not fight at all, is a tactic used solely by the "left".

Got news for you Tom... If you REALLY want energy independence for America, it's less about money and more about removing regulations and legislation which prevents drilling as well as not being picky about shale oil (tar sands, oil sands, etc).

I'm sorry, but being as conservative as I am, I would like to see the US really cut the defence budget and bring its troops home from South Korea, Europe etc. We can't have the Americans continually doing the work others should be doing.

Yes, take 100 Billion ANNUALLY from the US defense budget and build NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS! Also, build clean coal Fischer-Tropsche (sp?) plants to produce jet and diesel.

Why do you think China is building military outposts all over Asia? They are building ports or having agreements with other governments aiming to control sea-routes. Being able to control sea is a part of strategic control of the world economy (majority of trade is going by sea) and it is also a major part of being able to win a conventional wars.

Given that the US imports (as of Oct/09), about 3.5 million barrels per day from Canada and Mexico combined, at $75/bbl, that works out to roughly $250 million a day, or about $90 billion a year. Given that Canada and Mexico account for about 1/3 of US oil imports, that means $180 billion a year is going to other countries. So, how does $100b save you $270b in oil exports?
