Royal Canadian Mounted Police Inspector Tim Shields said a man in his 50s or 60s was taken into custody on a farm in the western Alberta town of Hythe. Police did not release the suspect's name pending the filing of formal charges.
About a dozen officers conducted a search of the farm, Shield said.

CBQ is reporting that the man that was arrested is Wiebo Ludwig and the farm searched belonged to him. Anyone surprised?

A convicted Canadian gas well bomber has written an open letter to whoever may be responsible for several bombings of energy giant EnCana Corp's pipeline in British Columbia.
Wiebo Ludwig was convicted on five charges related to bombings and vandalism against oil and gas lines in Alberta causing millions of dollars of damage in April 2001. He was sentenced to 28 months in prison, and was paroled after serving two-thirds of his sentence.
Luwig said he decided to publicly reach out to appeal for answers in the investigation of the bombings targeting six pipelines owned by petroleum giant EnCana Corp. southeast of Dawson Creek, British Columbia, since last October.
After shying away from speaking publicly about the bombings, Ludwig told a local radio station in Edmonton, Alberta, that he felt he needed to make a personal pitch for peace to whoever is behind the EnCana bombings.
"I just hope that he isn't going to lose it and do something dangerous," Ludwig said in an interview aired on Saturday.

The townsfolk are not sympathetic. In 1999 he, or one of his charges, killed a young girl. Shot her dead. A crime for which no charges have ever been laid. Most in town would prefer to see the arrogant prick hang.

Robert of Ottawa (8:22), Ludwig hasn't been charged with the bombings, he's been arrested (according to AP) for extortion of Encana, who - it may be relevant - have been offering $1m for information on the identity of the bomber. It's close to a dead certainty that Ludwig isn't the bomber, because he's had too much heat (too many eyes) on him, and similarly it seems awfully unlikely that, even IF Ludwig is aware of the identity of the bomber, he would have a) been in *direct* contact with him, or, b) if he did have contact, that he would have left evidence of that on his property. Ludwig is a sneaky, paranoid, Albert Johnson-type o'guy. In my opinion.
Putting on the deerstalker hat here, just for idle weekend amusement, here's a purely speculative, conjectural scenario: Ludwig had been teasing the authorities, saying - perhaps to mislead them - that he had some information on the identity of the bomber, but he made the provision of information conditional on certain demands of his being met. The RCMP, in the interests of obtaining a search warrant which might enable them to find out once and for all whether Ludwig knew anything, charged him with extortion, on the grounds that his withholding was (in effect) a threat to allow the bomber to get away unless Ludwig received something in return - hence "extortion."
Pure idle speculation there, based on available information. I think the RCMP maybe charged Ludwig so they could get a search warrant.
I hope they find something useful that will help them solve the case.
Actually, I thought he might be incompetent as a bomber. You know he was trying to blow up gas pipelines, and gas being highly flammable and stuff. You'd think he could at least drill a hole on the pipe and strike a match. The Panty Bomber was less pathetic than that loser. I am by no means saying Ludwig is a saint. And if he did bomb the lines he should be punished only as his crimes deserve.
But what we have here is a miscarriage of justice. NO EVIDENCE,(if there is let them produce it) Suspecting something, is not evidence, and saying your going to do wrong to do a larger right is complete moral confusion.
The RCMP has in the Past not acted above board lately. (Previous Framed Bombings, Recent case with young man who knew Rosco in Mayorthorp - entrapment -taking advantage of a stupid person, Polish man at airport - coverup) If anyone else were involved in these activities they would be punished severely and deservedly!!

Jared, you idiot. Ludwig's 35 member community, is an inbred, extended family, living on land that was never suitable for farming. When he realized his land was worthless, he decided to extort an oil comapnay into buying him out, for 10 times the value. He conned the media into publishing pictures of a goat fetus, and saying it sprung from his wife's foul loins. He murdered a child, and the media spent more time dragging her reputation through the mud, than talking about the crime.
I'm hoping this is an OJ moment, and Weibo will finally do time, even if it isn't for his worst crime.
