And while I'm on a Politically Incorrect roll, I'll throw in a quote from Winston Churchill, from his 1899 book "The River War". The young Churchill, an 1894 graduate of Sandhurst Royal Military College, had much firsthand observations and experience of Islam, having served as a junior officer in the British Army in peace and combat-in India, in parts of India now called Pakistan, in Egypt and the Sudan in the war about which he wrote. His observations:

Hey Sounder Toronto has been seen as zip since I was a teenager 50 plus years ago. We used to say "Good ole Toronto where Women are Women and 1/2 the men are too." as a joke. That has changed over the years to the point that there is not a male (I hate to say man) in Toronto with enough balls to do anything that involves standing up for what is right no matter what the issue is. Even though the Hansard quoted is actually identified (in small print) at the beginning of the transcription, I wasn’t wearing my glasses and missed the reference. It was only after Day’s criticisms seemed really out of line with the Conservatives’ policy (not to mention the Conservatives’ self-interest!) that I realized he was criticizing Chretien. Though not a particularly devout practitioner of Christianity, Churchill understood the link between Christianity and the preservation of civilization. "Security Breach at Hospital Holding Terror Suspect; Reporter Gets Within Feet of Bedridden Bomber

The Obama administration will have a lot to answer for after its bumbling federal law enforcement agency allowed a reporter to get close enough to the hospital bed of terror suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to have killed him if that was his intent.

Abdulmutallab is being held by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency after he was badly burned in a reported failed attempt to blow up Northwest flight 253 on its approach to Detroit from Amsterdam yesterday.

The Wall Street Journal reported the incident in an article published here:

On Saturday morning, the suspect appeared to be sleeping when a reporter approached his corner room in the burn center at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.

Down the hall, other patients were resting in rooms decorated with garland and tinsel for Christmas. A few visitors moved about freely.

The suspect's room was darkened and he lay motionless in bed. His head, with close-cropped hair, was turned away from the door.

Two uniformed customs and border-patrol officers were seated outside the open door and other security officials and hospital staffers were gathered in a nearby conference room.

When the reporter identified himself, a man in a suit and tie said the area was "secured" and ordered the reporter to leave immediately. The man declined to identify himself and he and one of the uniformed guards escorted the reporter to a hospital waiting area. Moments later the man in the suit returned with a hospital security guard, who told the reporter to leave the hospital grounds.

Anyone who has seen the first Godfather movie knows this type of incident is probable and preventable.

Muslims generally are not a danger to our freedom. Unfortunately terrorists are and they are predominately Muslim, regardless of how many exist. It is an expectation and responsibility in a free country that the Canadian Muslim community respond and be willing to cooperate in pointing out the bad apples that threaten our freedom. Isn't this the reason most law abiding people come to this country for - for the freedom? When they refuse, then all Muslims are the problem and they need to start being treated accordingly.

Politicians are more than willing to usurp our freedoms to promote 'security' for more power because a lot of people like MC are willing to let it happen because they don't want to offend. Section 27 of the Charter of Rights states that "This Charter shall be interpreted in a manner consistent with the preservation and enhancement of the multicultural heritage of Canadians". The section is a mistake (one of many in the Charter) and should be removed, because it's unnecessary.

A proper delineation of individual rights would state that no person has the right to initiate the use of force on any other person, and work from that starting point. The whole concept of equality of rights - as in all individuals have the same rights - means that no "interpretation" should be required.

Nothing in the principle stated above would interfere with the right of an individual from any ethnic background to continue to celebrate his or her own culture insofar as it involves practices that are non-violent.

The wording of s.27 is execrable, not least because it focuses on a collective rather than on individuals. It is not the function of government to preserve, enhance, or otherwise interfere with culture. Individuals may retain many of their own cultural practices if they wish.
