The Canucks In Canuckville

This morning I watched a documentory on Hungarian refugees coming to Canada in 1956. 10,000 of them were brought to Canada. All they wanted to do was work to support themselves and their families and are forever greatful to the Canadian people for welcoming them and giving them a home.

Why did we go from bringing immigrants like that to Canada and start bringing in immigrants that hate us and for the most part don't want to work?

As an immigrant myself I am truly baffled by this.

It's like having a party in your house but instead of inviting the people who would appreciate your efforts you invite the bike gang from down the street who you don't know but have heard only bad things about.

Here in BC, starting Jan.1, it'll be $168.00 plus 3 points on your license for using your cell phone while driving.

This should make a huge dent in the crime rate and Olympic cost overruns.

A male passenger reportedly linked to terrorist organization al-Qaeda ignited a powdery substance prior to landing on a Delta Airlines flight to Detroit Friday. The suspect is believed to be Nigerian, Fox News reported.

Several people were hurt and one person was admitted to the University of Michigan Medical Center at Ann Arbor, hospital spokeswoman Tracy Justice said. An emergency was declared aboard the flight, operated as Northwest flight 253, according to a Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson.

The suspect, who suffered second-degree burns, told federal investigators he was directed by al-Qaeda, though authorities are questioning the veracity of that statement, ABC reported. A federal situational awareness bulletin noted that the explosive was acquired in Yemen with instructions as to when it should be used, ABC said."

The poem reminds me of a line in the movie Dr. Zhivago when Dr. Zhivago, his family and father-in-law are travelling on the train from Moscow to the Urals in a converted cattle car and a prisoner in chains being taken to a labour camp rattles his shackles and says to his guard "lick-spittle...I am still a free man".

We read this poem aloud at our family gathering earlier today, the way we've done each year since it was written. Classic.

As we were working to clean the kitchen last night post-turkey dinner, CBC News was on the background.

And it was pretty bizarre. An odd, somewhat downbeat, self-absorbed interview with Anne Murray that was utterly out of place on Christmas Day (I haven't the faintest idea what - if anything - was going through the programers' minds when they scheduled that one). The singer didn't come across well at all.

And then Peter Mansbridge wished us "Happy Holidays". It was Christmas Day. Would it have been too much to hope CBC could wish us a Merry Christmas at least on the day itself?

Apparently.

I seriously doubt if Mansbridge has ever had an original thought in his entire life. Uttering "Merry Christmas" would require a large deviation from the script.

When one is comfortably entrenched with the tax-payer funded lamprey that is the CBC, sticking one's neck out to such an extent is inadvisable.
