And the award for the Op-Ed Writer Who Most Reminds Us Why We Stopped* Buying Their Insipid Crap goes to....

I guess Manitoulin Island isn't a reality-based community.

It says the, er, editorialist is from "Manitoulin Island".
Is that, by some chance, a commune?

...a muslim commune.

And to Ruth Farquhar goes the...oh never mind, just send her a soother, some rubber bedsheets and a Government of Canada publication subsidy cheque.

Just how far does one have to bend over and surrender themselves in order to be paid to smear all the while thinking it's "work"?

You would think that someone languishing in a business with such a disgustingly huge carbon footprint would be a bit more circumspect.

I see many have caught the "Ruth Farquhar is a writer based on Manitoulin Island" reference.

Manitoulin has been marketing itself as an "artist's enclave" (read nest of commies) since the late 1960's when hippies who couldn't hack Yorkville decamped to the woods up there. Well they are STILL there, doing what hippies do. Namely smoke dope and whine about the eeeeevile Conservatives.

I vote we saw the sucker off at the water line and tow it down to Toronto. Stick it on next to Toronto Island, nobody will even notice the change.

"..Andrea Horwath receives the "I'm the Only One Who Makes Sense" award."

I am sitting in her riding right now. Ruth should come down here from her fantasy existence on Manitoulin Island and have a look around. It's a sh*t hole. Then again Andrea doesn't care as these unemployed factory workers stopped paying union dues long ago. Now they are a nuisance. Just like the auto workers will be in Windsor and Oshawa soon.

It's going to be pretty disillusioning for a lot of these workers when they find out they have gone from respected union brothers to white trash racists with one pink slip.

Turtle - I've been to Manitoulin Island, and thought about what I experienced there, and was never able to figure it out until now. You are right. It is a commune, where political thought in any direction but leftwards is felt to be just, well, WRONG.

The scenery is nice, though.

The Sudbury Star - well, don't let me digress.

Thanks for sharing this 'crap', Kate. Your descriptor was generous !

No bias in this stuff, eh? Needless to say I observed no opportunity for the reader to provide comments in response.

Farquhar may be able to write but she certainly has no capacity to think, or to reason. That makes her perfect for regurgitating leftist gibberish.

"... because now he is talking of slashing programs to pay for the billions of dollars the Conservatives have blown"

Yah, she'd be the first one to bitch if Harper had been able to do the responsible thing he originlly seemed like he wanted to do which was not blow a lot of money on this stimulus package that has done nothing useful.

And now we all got to pay for it and some things are going to be cut. There's where the lefty disconnect kicks in.

ARGH: I actually clicked on that link and now I have to wash my computer again. It had finally dried out from that scrubbing I gave it after following links to WK's site.

She did have a couple of nice things to say...about the NDP. I wonder if she's a dipper?

NDP leader Jack Layton is the proud recipient of the, "I'm the Only One Who Really Cares," award. Layton always comes across as the one in Parliament who speaks for the "little people."

NDP leader Andrea Horwath receives the "I'm the Only One Who Makes Sense" award. Finally, a politician who thinks before she speaks.

'I vote we saw the sucker off at the water line and tow it down to Toronto. Stick it on next to Toronto Island, nobody will even notice the change.'

Forget that noise as Manitoulin Island is way too beautiful and is a jewel of northern Ontario. I say round up all the socialist, communists, hippies and failed Trudeau wanna bes and send them back to Yorkville so we northerners may be free of them.

If the NDP would slash spending, programs, government intrusion, taxes, unions, ect., than I could honestly say that Jack Layton spoke for me. Until then he only speaks for the idealistic simple minded people.

I find it humorous that all these NDP supporters bitch about how the politicians never change and are far from worthy but still want them to create more programs that encroach on their lives.

Jay: "Farquhar may be able to write but she certainly has no capacity to think, or to reason."

Don't be so quick to give her that much credit: This is piss-poor writing, even if you ignore the obvious grammatical errors like using "then" instead of "than" and not knowing how to use proper punctuation.

What tripe. If this "article" were on a liblog I would not think twice but I do not know how it made it into an actual print newspaper.

Never heard of either of them, but I guess Farquhar and her Indian boy friend Manitoulin are important somewhere.

The constant sniping at Conservatives is really old and tired. As everyone at SDA knows, Conservatives are the real creators of wealth. They often hire dumb-shit liberals who have run out of government programs to exploit, but usually only till they have enough weeks in to collect again.

Farquhar reminds me that only mad dogs and Socialists bite the hand that feeds. I am not sure which one she is, but the word 'bitch' comes to mind. Perhaps she straddles those two groups.

Look a bit harder and you will find a way to contact the editorial dept.. You can also read all four comments to the paper. Four in five months! Wow!

The print version of the daily newspaper should die. It is obsolete. We don't lament the demise of the telegraph or typewriter industry, do we? Online "newspapers" are just a more efficient means of communication, as they do not involve cutting down a forest and shipping it around by truck. An online version is searchable, and available anywhere as soon as it is posted. The faster the news"paper" dies, the better.

Reminds me of an old story...

PMSH and Taliban Jack are walking down the street together one day.

They come across a beggar and Steven says to the bum, "Listen pal heres a 20 dollar bill and a business card from a friend of mine. Go buy yourself something to eat get a shower and a shave, go see him tomorrow and he will give you some work"

They walk a bit more and run into another bum, this time Jack says "Mister here is the address to the local welfare office" ...and well, you know the rest.

And as usual these lefty's don't have a comments section.

Warren Z, that's because they just know you couldn't possibly have anything to say that's more interesting than what -they- have to say.

They're Lefties. "Nuff said.

"NDP leader Jack Layton is the proud recipient of the, "I'm the Only One Who Really Cares," award. Layton always comes across as the one in Parliament who speaks for the "little people." It's too bad, however, that it comes across as "I don't really care, I just want to be in power" to most Canadians."

That's because most Canadians are more astute than you are, Ruth dear.

When I saw that Manitoulin Island address of the writer, I too wondered if it was another hippie/socialist enclave like our Golf Islands here in B.C.

Going by the comments here, it seems so. Funny how so many who preach about how we should live and who should govern us, have in reality opted out of mainstream society and cackle at us from a distant "paradise".

Suzuki and many of the CBC stars out here live on or have getaways on Saltspring,Texada, or Gabriola Island, and Ontario has Manitoulin.

Blather on hippies, not many are paying attention to you any more.

You know she's crazy, because anyone who is from northern Ontario and isn't prying for global warming must be insane.

Saw it on national newswatch a collector of all things anti PMSH. Read the first paragraph, groaned and left it there. I thought of responding but then u have to sign on to their turgid 'paper'. Who could bother?

NNW furiously and endlessly blows on the embers of the Afghan detainee issue hoping against hope something catches. Sad really.

Just for the record, I'm in Alberta and had no idea that Manitoulin Island WAS some kind of commune. I was just trying to make some kind of smart-ass remark.

It's a darn shame when people sink to a point where it's challenging to insult them.

turtle: "had no idea that Manitoulin Island WAS some kind of commune."

Well, it's not really.

I just love the way the left keeps referring to Harper as "Bush's lackey". When you ask them what, specifically, he did to deserve that epithet, they start blustering about Afghanistan. Then you remind them that the Liberals actually made the first decision to send troops there. Then they start foaming at the mouth and start ranting at me personally, calling me a "fascist", etc. But a single substantive reason, beyond the fact he's Conservative? Not a one.

I say round up all the socialist, communists, hippies and failed Trudeau wanna bes and send them back to Yorkville so we northerners may be free of them.

Yeah, it is a PO when the city dwelling burn outs head into the woods because they bring the same attitudes that they had in the big smoke with them. Annoying as hell to those that have always lived in rural settings. They're always in court suing somebody or some organization because they don't do it their way.

This seems like the kind of submitted opinion piece from the public many papers run. It's an Osprey paper, they probably can't afford to pay op-ed writers, so they fill the space with whatever the public submits.

They also recently published Lorrie Goldstein's piece on Copenhagen here: http://sudburystar.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2232505

So it's not fair to judge to whole paper based on one opinion.

The only good thing is the ad for the Subaru Forester, a great vehicle as I have driven one for the past 10 years, well two actually, my first went to my son in law.

One of the most biased newspapers in the US has to be the Minneapolis Star/Tribune. The guys at the Powerline blog have documented it for years. Here is a new example: http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2009/12/025258.php This bias can affect elections, since (too) many people rely on the local fishwrap for their information about candidates. The Trib is famous for hiding unsavory details about liberal candidates, such as Al Franken and the only Muslim in our Congress, Keith Ellison. The Trib has already been through bankruptcy, but the monopoly status of this rag allows it to hang on, I guess. I suspect the country has a much more lefty Congress and President than we would if we had a more fair and accurate media.

Never been to Manitoulin Island, but I have been to Sudbury once or twice.

Stayed at the Holiday Inn.

"Ruth Farquhar is a writer based on Manitoulin Island."

Are there magic mushrooms on Manitoulin island? - or do the residents just share a common drug-addled left wing altered reality with west coast islanders?

In any event Ruthie's type of thinly disguised personal neurotic axe grinding and partisan advocacy is certainly why I cashed in my paper subscription a decade ago. I suppose the Sudbury readership has a higher tolerance to this brainless advocacy dreck than the rest of the nation.

Was at my lefty sister's place on Manitoulin Island for 2 months last year. After you get on the island, the 1st thing you see are two giant bird killers.Otherwise, they have 2 industries;fleecing stupid rich tourists from Tarano from May 24th - Labour Day,then EI.And they PROUDLY admit it.Oh yeah. The population is 99.9% commie/hippies,and their brethern,6 government subsidised resevartions. And this "writer" fully reflect the mindset of the people. She is of the collective,NOT of the odd remaining farmer.

People who want to move the hippies to Yorkville in Toronto obviously haven't been there in 40 years. Yorkville is now the high rent district, full of ultra-high priced condos, pricey restaurants, and ritzy boutiques. The hippies are in Parkdale now.

This is why I stopped subscribing to the print media after TET. The interweb didn't exist then but my position why should I pay for enemy propaganda.
At first, I had overlooked the Manitoulin angle and consider/ed that this was perhaps the beginning of her campaign as an NDP MLA or MP. For her that would be like snaging the 649.

At this point, I would rather hear more about how former president Bush spent his Christmas than what Michelle Obama wore when she didn't go to Christmas church services.
If newspapers want to publish crap, fine. It's free press. If I and hundreds of others wish to boycott that particular paper, even better.

What the hell is a Manitoulin?

Vacationing on Manitoulin Island is like stepping back fifty years. Seriously. Bring enough cash to last you for your stay.

My vote for worst Canadian columnist of the year:

Jeffrey Simpson.

I second that, chutzpahticular.

Jeff is a real piece of work.

I third that, chutzpahticular.

Shucks, let's make it unanimous!

Did she really say "a government that has spent us into the dark ages"?

That's what Pierre Trudeau did. We still haven't recovered.

I just love the way the left keeps referring to Harper as "Bush's lackey". When you ask them what, specifically, he did to deserve that epithet, they start blustering about Afghanistan. ~KevinB

I think recognizing Kosovo as an independent nation qualifies Harper as being at least an American lackey, if not Bush's lackey.

It was a bad decision for Canadian interests and entirely unnecessary.
Of course you wouldn't see a Leftist state that recognizing Kosovo independence was a bad thing.

_* Harper, isn't he the guy that signed the Copenhagen agreement after calling Kyoto Liberal Dream Whip or something like that? John Baird signed the carbon trade law into existence not Jean Chretien or Stephane Dion.
Jim Prentice says that East Anglia gives him Angina and wants nothing to do with the wacko conspiracy theories of some.
