Got to give the guy full marks for dedication. He's ceased emitting carbon dioxide, or at least he will once the "ashes to ashes" bit happens.

Canon Cooke reminds me of the Rev. Peter Nordwestdeutscher, one of the minor characters in the late Michael Wharton's "Peter Simple" columns. Liberal Democratic councilor, environmental campaigner, and "industrial chaplain", Canon Cooke would have been on the sharp end of Wharton's pen.

Now that he is looking at his Creator in the eyes, I wonder if he wishes he would have spent his short stint here on earth paying more attention to what God had to say about man than what man has to say about God!

Help me people please - I must be "too stupid to feed myself" - do not plants and trees need carbon dioxide to grow and are not humans a "carbon based" lifeform? - If we reduce our carbon footprint as much as Copenhagen wants, then we WILL disappear.

Perhaps it's a bit of a stretch but this looks a lot like a sign of divine intervention. Now if the almighty would strike down Gore and/or Suzuki as well, we will know we are in a state of grace.

'Nothing wrong with cycling to Copenhagen -- at least he put his money where his mouth is and, as it turns out, his life on the line -- for his beliefs. David Suzuki and his ilk didn't ride bikes to Copenhagen, no doubt, flying first class.

That having been said, however, many of us in the Church are tired of the social activist crusaders dressed up in priestly garb. Jesus wasn't a social activist, contrary to what many think. He was first and foremost committed to the coming of the Kingdom of G*d, which meant putting G*d first and spending time in prayer to find out just what this means in our lives.

Too often social activism takes the place of true worship and becomes an idol. I can't judge whether this was the case with Hereward Cooke, but all too often this is what happens when people mix let's-save-the-planet zeal with religious faith: There's a danger that saving the planet and whatever that entails usurps service of G*d and neighbour.

Now, if he AND his bike could be composted, that would really do the "zero foot print" thing well.

I believe the Pope and parish priests have made note of the need for restraint in our material needs, and consideration for the environment. However, to my knowledge those in the Roman parishes do not have "diocesan environmental officers" per say. There main concern is the spiritual health of the parish and all mankind, and pressing everyday needs. As I recall, in Genesis
we are called to subdue the earth, for our day to day needs, and it is far human friendlier than it once was.

Name one electric or hybrid production line vehicle that exists today that wasn't researched, promoted, and brought to production without using vast sums of taxpayer funds and then tell me that any of them would have even been designed in the first place without restrictive government guidelines on the automakers which were lobbied by the Leftist environmental movement.

The market for such vehicles only exists because of lies and coercion.

I will not speak ill of the dead, especially if the dead was a man of the cloth. I will, however, say that now he must answer to God for what he did. God wanted us to be stewards of the earth, not pretend we are the Messiah.

You've heard, surely, that Pope Benedict has invited Anglicans (including priests) to join with Catholics, and that they could keep their Book of Common Prayer (hopefully with Onward Christian Soldiers, reinstated) and many of their own liturgies etc., that comply with Catholic principles. I don't think he meant to include women priests and Bishops or their husbands or lesbian partners though. Or male homosexuals who are not celibate, or married.
