The Sound Of All Hell About To Break Loose

The Hadley Climate Research Unit has been hacked;

An unknown person put postings on some climate skeptic websites that advertsied an FTP file on a Russian FTP server, here is the message that was placed on the Air Vent today:

We feel that climate science is, in the current situation, too important to be kept under wraps. We hereby release a random selection of correspondence, code, and documents

The file was large, about 61 megabytes, containing hundreds of files.

It contained data, code, and emails from Phil Jones at CRU to and from many people.

I’ve seen the file, it appears to be genuine and from CRU. Others who have seen it concur- it appears genuine. There are so many files it appears unlikely that it is a hoax. The effort would be too great.

Here is some of the emails just posted at Climate Audit on this thread: http://www.climateaudit.org/?p=7801#comments

Yowza.

Air Vent link here.

Update

The director of Britain's leading Climate Research Unit, Phil Jones, has told Investigate magazine's TGIF Edition tonight that his organization has been hacked, and the data flying all over the internet appears to be genuine.

In an exclusive interview, Jones told TGIF, "It was a hacker. We were aware of this about three or four days ago that someone had hacked into our system and taken and copied loads of data files and emails."

"Have you alerted police"

"Not yet. We were not aware of what had been taken."

Jones says he was first tipped off to the security breach by colleagues at the website RealClimate.

"Real Climate were given information, but took it down off their site and told me they would send it across to me. They didn't do that. I only found out it had been released five minutes ago."

TGIF asked Jones about the controversial email discussing "hiding the decline", and Jones explained what he was trying to say….

James Delingpole of the Telegraph (UK) - "If you own any shares in alternative energy companies I should start dumping them NOW."

These emails are damning stuff, suggesting collusion, conspiracy, and suppression and manipulation of data on the part of leading "climate" scientists. Read Andrew Bolt for some of the highlights.

Lots at Climate Depot, too.

Climate Audit is still being slammed, so you may have a lot of trouble getting in there.

Kate - link is down

Wow, if this is true, I think the CRU is toast. All of their emails will be released via "Freedom Of Information" request as . FOI, what an Orwellian name for a law that really protects government bureaucrats and not the people they are supposed to serve.

Climate Audit seems to be under heavy demand right now.

Oooo, caught with the hand in the cookie jar! Naughty!

See, this is why I don't believe in these perfect conspiracies, like the ATF brass knew about Oklahoma City, like the 9/11 Troofers, ad nauseam. Somebody -always- squeals.

"Hadley CRU hacked with release of hundreds of docs and emails
November 19, 9:42 PMEssex County Conservative ExaminerTerry Hurlbut

The University of East Anglia's Hadley Climatic Research Centre appears to have suffered a security breach earlier today, when an unknown hacker apparently downloaded 1079 e-mails and 72 documents of various types and published them to an anonymous FTP server. These files appear to contain highly sensitive information that, if genuine, could prove extremely embarrassing to the authors of the e-mails involved. Those authors include some of the most celebrated names among proponents of the theory of anthropogenic global warming (AGW).

The FTP link first appeared on a blog called The Air Vent. The blog's owner, identified as "Jeff Id", downloaded the file, examined it, and posted a brief summary on his blog. Another commenter, identified as "Steven Mosher," passed the information on to Steven McIntyre's Climate Audit blog and to another blog, The Blackboard, run by a blogger identified as "Lucia." Most recently, blogger Anthony Watts, who runs a blog titled "Watts Up With That?" mentioned the FTP archive in his own blog.

Commentary on all the blogs involved has been brisk, except, oddly enough, at The Air Vent, where only seven comments have been received.

The FTP server is in a Russian domain and uses the anonymous FTP protocol, which does not require a pre-registered user account or password for downloading. The file is named FOI2009.zip, an apparent reference to US Public Law 89-554, 80 Stat. 383, the Freedom of Information Act.

Some of the most embarrassing e-mails are attributed to Philip Jones, the Director of the CRU; Keith Briffa, his assistant; Michael E. Mann of the University of Virginia; Malcolm Hughes at the University of Arizona; and others. One such e-mail makes references to the famous "hockey-stick" graph published by Mann in the journal Nature:

I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline. Mike's series got the annual land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.

The emphasis in the above quote was added.

As embarrassing as the e-mails are, some of the documents are more embarrassing. They include a five-page PDF document titled The Rules of the Game, that appears to be a primer for propagating the AGW message to the average subject/resident of the United Kingdom. The document suggests that it is a precis of a longer document housed at the Web site of the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs."

Looks like this is going viral...

the age of digital fallout is upon us.

my take on this?

we haven't heard the last of it by a long shot.

The ftp is down now.
Who wants a copy? It's 62MB though.

ChrisinMB, I'll take one copy please.

email: footballpool2009 at mail.com

Please email a copy to frackow at gmail.com

my email is capped at 36MB, I'll split it up and try emailing it to kate

Oh dearie dear - mice!

ChrisinMB - any chance you could get it onto a torrent?

In light of the Hadley hacking it's somewhat fitting that this got by the equally formidable media firewall in der Speigel today:

The truth always comes out.

"ChrisinMB - any chance you could get it onto a torrent?"
I'm not sure how, never done it before

Put a copy on filedropper then post the link back to us:

http://www.filedropper.com/

It's free. 5GB file limit.

Get it to filedropper. Will get it to torrent.

doing it now...

May take awhile, it's only uploading at around 40kb/s. I'll put up the link as soon as it's done.

Keep on rockin' in the free world!

Real, fake, whatever. The people have to decide for themselves.

Suspense!

Download sites (from WUWT comments) are:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=75J4XO4T
and
http://rapidshare.com/files/309496568/FOI2009.zip.html

I haven't personally tried these sites and got my copy from the Russian ftp server before it went down.

I posted a comment at WUWT about how much time we should spend on it. Being curious, I'm sure that everyone will want to download their own copy as I did but IMHO it is worth 1/8 of our combined brainpower to analyze in detail while we use the remaining 7/8 to see what kind of deception this might have been should it turn out to be one. To decide if you immerse yourself in the file for days to weeks or continue on as normal flip a coin 3 times. If you get 3 heads in a row start going through the file (I got 3 tails so the file will sit temptingly on my hard drive for now).

UP FREEDOM!

The Megaupload link works.

I love the smell of Copenhagen in the morning.

Way to go people. Give em he**. Expose the scumbags for the one world proponents that they are. Hopefully Strong, Soros and Gore get hammered as well.

My upload is 75% done, almost there.
btw, this is a copy of the first text I seen promoting the files:

We feel that climate science is, in the current situation, too important to be kept under wraps.

We hereby release a random selection of correspondence, code, and documents.
Hopefully it will give some insight into the science and the people behind it.

I wonder how long it will take the MSM to report this.

Never?

Very interesting! Talk about poking a stick in a hornets' nest. We should be in for fun few weeks of claims and counter-claims.

Hey kids, make sure you use Peer Block (google it and learn). I got some NATO C3 agency action the minute I looked at all this stuff.

What they do, I don't know. Vague govt. website etc.

Also check out Opera Tor. Just make sure you secure the browser a bit more, they don't do that by default. Runs off a USB stick too.

Oh yeah, almost forgot...you can use Peer Block to block the entire country of China. See iblocklist.com

http://iblocklist.com/list.php?list=cn

Gives me that warm fuzzy feeling when I look at my logs.

I would expect either Lorne Gunter or Lorrie Goldstein would be the most likely to pick up on the story if the hack is not a hoax.

The implications of the revelations of the information in the hack is mind-numbing.

"information in the hack is mind-numbing"

This looks like much more than a simple hack, way too much info and documentation here. Even old Fortran code and statistical data is included. Looks to me like the work of a very dedicated mole or perhaps... even someone's government intelligence agency? I don't even recognize half the file extensions in this thing.

"Hadley CRU are the Enron of science."

Ouch, that's going to leave a mark.

H/T Eric Smith over at WUWT

I have scanned some of the emails. They are shocking.

Here is a group of people whose "science" is (unfortunately) being relied upon to set major policy by nearly every country in the world, and yet they appear to be a bunch of utterly immature juveniles.

Of course, why should we not be surprised.

I hope this thing turns out to be as big as it looks.

Just looked at the contents very briefly and it appears they uploaded the whole show.

Looks like it includes Mann & Briffa data sets, program files, old program files, map plots, including propaganda methods to change public perception etc.

Somebody dumped a whole lot of data out there for a reason...

This appears to support the "tailor the data" to the theory story.

I would agree with ChrisinMB way too much data for a simple hoax, somebody has gone to a lot of trouble here to get this all out.

Cheers

HOT Proposal - Page 7

"Climate change scientists are unable to define what would be an acceptable level and time-frame for global concentrations of greenhouse gases to be stabilised. This is because the evaluation of climate change risks is essentially a political issue. Moreover, scientific uncertainties make it very difficult to assess the likelihood of possible climate change events and thus to quantify the risks of climate change. In short, the climate change issue is characterised as an unstructured problem where both the values at stake as well as the science is uncertain and subject of debate."

Nice. They then cut and pasted a bit:

http://www.ivm.vu.nl/en/Images/HOTF9D983D0-265E-48CE-A18FED7DFD1D1DB8_tcm53-102575.pdf

"Problem
How does HOT help?
The ultimate objective of the Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) is to stabilize greenhouse gas
concentrations at levels that prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system.
Climate change scientists are unable to define what would be an acceptable level and time-frame for
stabilizing global concentrations of greenhouse gases. This is because defining acceptable and
unacceptable risks of climate change and climate change policies is essentially a political issue."

Ummm...yeah. And we should trust these people...why again?

Well, we want to stabilize gases at some level. But we don't know what the acceptable level is.

Thinking people everywhere need to rise up and call bullshit on this whole operation. These are desperate people trying to justify their high paying paper pushing jobs. Nothing more.

I predict a lot of "no comment" words will be spoken to reporters tomorrow who call the names in the emails. I wonder if the main players in this saga will co-ordinate their damage control message or will it be every scientist form themselves.

"I wonder if the main players in this saga will co-ordinate their damage control message..."

One thing is for sure, they won't be emailing each other about it. ;)

Just keep remembering that this whole thing got its wheels by journalists becoming celebrities (or vice-versa). Or maybe it was pseudo-scientists becoming celebrities, it's hard to tell these days.

Honesty somehow got thrown under the bus, sacrificed to negligent "go-along-withism", willful myopia and a determined effort to NOT perform due diligence.

The next "crisis" will be the notion of government financially bailing-out the newspapers because of their current state, in the name of preserving the freedom of the press.
