The first time I heard Pretty Woman I was in my older cousin's 1963 Chevy Impala SS, two tone blue, 327, automatic, buckets, console with a small cue ball shift knob. He'd been drafted, and was heading off to Nam and was leaving the car in my father's care for the duration of his tour. I loved riding in that car, listening to the radio (it had TWO speakers, one in the front and one in the middle of the back seat), waiting all the while for Petula Clark to sing "Down Town". Pretty Woman came on and they played it twice in a row, my cousin and I instantly promoted it to our number one. I was 11 and my cousin 19, that was the 'Best' that summer in Texas just before I started junior high and my cousin went to war. Thanks Vit for the memories, I could smell the honey suckle and the Impala.
Here: http://www.prisonplanet.com/with-hurricanes-at-thirty-year-low-gore-turns-to-photoshop.html you will find a long (2h:24min) movie, Fall Of The Republic.
Interesting look at the global warming cult.
On the lighter side: having fun with ads.
Re Roy Orbison
At the PBS Seattle, every so often they have a fund riser, more often then not they have this show “Roy Orbison and friends”.
Have watched it something like 20 times, and will watch it more as it comes. There is something unusual about this concert. It was taped at the Coconut Joe’s in LA in the 80’ if I’m not mistaken.
You can really see that the musicians and the singers are doing what they are doing because they really enjoy playing music together; it is some kind of magical.

I like Roy Orbison, but I think Pretty Woman is on the mundane side. In Dreams and Blue Angel, on the other hand, are really quite wonderful.
Just wanted to repost something I had placed elsewhere. I'm offering to coordinate the 1st ever "SDA Left Coast Summit" (aka a coffee!). We can meet at a time & place hopefully convenient for everyone, somewhere in the Metro Vancouver area.

Here's a video conversation between Ann Althouse (a slightly right-of-center law professor) and Michelle Goldberg, an extreme Rabid Leftist.
Althouse is not a fan of Sarah Palin. But Goldberg is the Poster Girl for Elitist Leftists everywhere. I've met similarly unattractive women like her in Vancouver & Seattle. They're convinced that they're smarter & wiser than you about everything.
P.S. If you can stand listening to Goldberg until about the 25 minute mark, you'll hear her explain why Barack Obama is "such a great president" and give several reasons why she loves him. Ughhhh.

"Oprah Winfrey to End Her Program in 2011"
Back in the day (80's) she used to have ppl on who said they were kidnapped by UFO's, and a whole bunch of washed up celebs. O. contributed to the "tabloid TV" phenomena, which Phil Donahue later complained drove him off the air, when O's early celeb-filled shows beat him in the ratings.
Never underestimate the perceived collective power of a bunch (let's estimate millions) of women with nothing better to do than watch soap operas (or Oprah and clones) every day.
In this market segment, thinking is not a necessary qualification to get into an "Oprah" (or similar show) as an audience member.
Display some rabid genuflection and you're in.

"Green eggs and ham
The New York Times published a joke in December 1942 about a soldier writing home to his mother from camp. “The food in this camp is absolute poison. And such small portions.” The Dean of the Harvard Medical School, Jeffrey S. Flier, writes that the same thing is true about health care “reform”: it will take everything that is bad about the current US system and give patients more of it. In the process, it will also take everything that is good about the status quo and give people less of it in the future. The bad news is that certain food items in the camp will remain “absolute poison”; the good news is that it will be available in really generous portions. Flier analyzes the current system’s problems:
Our health-care system suffers from problems of cost, access and quality, and needs major reform. Tax policy drives employment-based insurance; this begets overinsurance and drives costs upward while creating inequities for the unemployed and self-employed. A regulatory morass limits innovation. And deep flaws in Medicare and Medicaid drive spending without optimizing care. …
In discussions with dozens of health-care leaders and economists, I find near unanimity of opinion that, whatever its shape, the final legislation that will emerge from Congress will markedly accelerate national health-care spending rather than restrain it. Likewise, nearly all agree that the legislation would do little or nothing to improve quality or change health-care’s dysfunctional delivery system. The system we have now promotes fragmented care and makes it more difficult than it should be to assess outcomes and patient satisfaction. The true costs of health care are disguised, competition based on price and quality are almost impossible, and patients lose their ability to be the ultimate judges of value."

Hi Kathy,
My first time posting though I am a regular visitor for the last 3 years. I watched the Michael Coren show on Wednesday and Thursday and took exception to his opinions on our Prime Minister's visit to Chabad House in Mumbai. Posting my letter to him - sorry but it is a bit long.
Dear Mr.Coren,
It's been some time since I got a chance to watch a live broadcast of your show. I normally record them and then watch them later since your 6:00 pm slot is a tad too early for me.
Anyway, you started the show with our Prime Minister's visit to Chabad House in Mumbai on Wednesday and brought up the topic again on Thursday. As a first generation, extremely proud to be Canadian with Indian roots, I was very disappointed when you talked about the pogroms against Muslims. I love my birth country and as a minority Christian I never felt that I faced discriminations there but in fact, was part of the colourful, chaotic tapastry of life in India. Islamic history in India has been aggressive, violent and extreme. In the 600 odd years of Mughul rule, it has been conservatively estimated that 80 million Hindus were killed with thousands of temples being distroyed and ransacked. Even the British favoured the Muslims over the Hindus seeing in them fellow monothiests.
At partition time, it was a Muslim leader - Jinnah, who insisted on a separate homeland. With this historical background and given that India has 800 million plus Hindus today , the violence against the Muslim community is a blip compared to the (Islamic) slaughter being perpetrated in countries like Pakistan, Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, Phillipines etc. It doesn't in any way make what happens in India right, but it should be viewed in the right context.
Additionally, did you know that the Indian government has special job reservations for Muslims in government institutions, the Government funds madrassas across the country - those same madrassas that teach no science or math but focus entirely on the Koran and hatred of the Infidel. The government also sponsors the annual Haj pilgrimage of thousands of Indian Muslims. Bear in mind that graduates of madrassas are virtually useless in the job market - knowing the Koran doesn't get you very far. Every Friday, thousands of mosques across the country broadcast fiery sermons over their loudspeakers extorting the faithful to hate India, give generously to Jihad and kill Infidels - this is not hearsay, I have personally heard thousands of these sermons. Their loudspeakers carry their hate-filled words across whole neighbourhoods while Indians listen in disgust.
Undoubtedly, Muslims in India bear the larger poverty burden but the fault lies as much with their leaders as with the Government. When the government rolls out a family planning program urging Indians to have 2 or less children, they cannot target these programs towards the Muslims because of religious reasons and hurting their sentiments. Thus Hindus and other minorities now have smaller families and are lifting themselves out of poverty and educating their children, but Muslims still believe in dozens of children. Most Indians believe they are under seige by the Muslim minority and that having children is one way of taking over the country through sheer numbers - sounds farfetched but this belief is rampant among non-Muslim Indians.
I'm sorry to make this sound like a history & social lesson rolled into one but my point is that India treats its Muslim minority much better than any Muslim majority country treats its minorities and your use of words like 'pogroms' evokes images of vile persecution which is simply not the case. As a Canadian, I am extremely proud of our Prime Minister's visit to Chabad House. If you had read the Indian newspapers you would know that the Jewish couple were tortured for over 6 hours and the pregnant lady had her baby carved out of her body while still alive. The doctor who performed the autopsy was horrified at what was done to them and said that he had nightmares for weeks- what was their crime? being Jewish was enough to condemn them.
To conclude, In a city of 15 million souls the Muslims took time out to seek a Jewish symbol in a crowded, congested part of the city and I am so proud that PM Harper did the same.
PrisonPlanet time.

"It’s only a matter of time until you guys see crime getting worse than it already is.
Get an alarm, get a dog, secure your home.
Buy a handgun and if you don’t have one, and START CARRYING IT EVER SINGLE DAY. And for the love of God, when I say carry it, of course I’m not even bothering to mention the obvious: Know how to use it. That means self defense shooting lessons ( not just target practice) and somewhat regular practice sessions.
Even more important than all the guns in the world, you need to develop safety habits.
I don’t understand how some people can worry enough to carry a gun, but don’t see the basic common sense behind locking your car’s door.
Recognize the people around you, look for suspicious behavior, be extra alert when going in and out of your home, keep your house locked and do not open your door to strangers.
This is obvious for most, but again, you’d be surprised how naïve people can be.
These are simple things to do, and they are essential in keeping your family safe during high crime."

VANCOUVER — Canadians ordering prescription medication online are being warned that they may be illegally receiving counterfeit products manufactured overseas by criminal organizations.
And the products claiming health benefits are full of other chemicals that could make them sick, the RCMP and Canada Border Service Agency said at a joint news conference, part of an INTERPOL and World Health Organization initiative in 26 countries called Operation Pangea II.

Yep. And next, the owner gets sued for millions, criminal charges arise, financial ruination through civil suits, the offending dog gets put down, public awareness and education occurs, and a sad little bit of life unfolds.
Not all rainbows and floral farts, this mortal coil be.
And personal responsibility dictates the actions and societal mores we reside within, not some force fed pablum of the nanny state, banning anything with potential to harm.
I think these are constructs of a mature, civil society, rather than the trappings of a fascist/Marxist construct of - as some more eloquent than myself may state - the Religion of the Stomach*

not at all incurious_george. Now, let's see where we are. You are an 'information technology' professional working in the public sector, no?
It would explain your deference to statism. And the techno-geek part augers well for your intrinsic fear of other people and their potential actions.
It speaks to someone who does not have deep and sustained social connections.
After all, advocating unrestrained regulation is really all about insecurity. A left-wing reflex, as it were.
Anita, that's a great letter and I hope Coren reacts to it. As you know from personal experience muslims are a destructive force in society that we ignore to our peril.
Why does the Indian government allow these mosques to spread their message of death to the infidel. Surely this encouragement to murder people must be crime that can be fought. It has gone beyond free speech in calling for violence.
