remember it was only weeks ago that the MSM declared China's leadership in climate change proposals.

Ya China is serious about climate change, how about being serious about real pollution?

The Chinese throw a little money on some "biggest ever" solar and wind projects and it buys them all the slack they need going into Copenhagen and boosts their Global PR with Left Leaning politicians. They all run around saying China is kicking the West's butt on climate change now.

BS the west is building all the factories for turbines and Solar in China with Western Money, they just know stupid westerners will buy turbines and panels made in China. They do not care about climate, it is a low cost solution for them politically.

It is a win win win for them.

1)Gives them standing and leverage at UNFCCC Talks and raises global view of China diverting away attention on things like industrial pollution.

2)Encourages Foreign Investment in China for Exports to the West in a new market.

3)Allows them access to manufacturing technologies and products from Western Companies.

Would you not build a token Solar and Wind Farm to capture what is going to be a 2 Trillion Dollar Business over the next 25 years capitalizing on Doomed to Fail Western Energy Policies?

And the Canadian Cancer Agency is going nuts over pesticides on our lawn. Advocacy groups are dangerous because they are incapable of stopping even after they have won. MADD wants zero tolerance for alcohol and random breathalyzer tests even though drunk driving is way down and now mainly the purview of alcoholics. The Canadian Cancer society would push for an end to pesticides even though we know DDT prevents deaths in Africa and our modern agriculture and a world of hungry people depend on it. The BC Cancer Agency has stated that it's first non-commercial pesticides then they go after agriculture. I guess they think actually dying of starvation is better than a slightly increased risk of dying of cancer.

With Obama is over there this week it will be a moment when the pollution stopped spewing and the festering sores and cancers began to heal and it will again be safe to eat a feral cat.

If you go over to the Globe and Mail, there is yet another story about how Canada is an embarrassment, an ecological villain. Of course there is no discussion of our actual emissions or environmental protection policies. Polices that have prevented totalitarian government sized eco-disasters. The writer only regurgitates the usual per capita emissions comparisons. If China and India get a pass because of overpopulation and poverty then Canada should be able to count its uninhabited land mass and small population as offsets to our economic success. Or, better yet, scrap the entire scam and let the science catch up before politicians win the race to increase taxes and controls.

For the most part these pictures are not unlike industrial parts of north America fifty to sixty years ago. It wasn't pressure from outside countries that made us clean up our act, but prosperity and the time it gives citizens to protest and demand change.

All you watermellons out there wonder why we get so down on ecofriendly socialism, take a good look. That is not allowed to happen in modern Western countries because of PROPERTY RIGHTS, no some socialist regulatory setup that big guys can buy off.

I'm with Catherine at 3:46PM. That picture of the man with cancer trying to sleep sitting up, his head down on the bed, is sad. No one should have to live like that. If your only reaction to this is to give a "shout out" for capitalism, you're no better than Obama giving a "shout out" to a friend before he (eventually) gets around to talking about Fort Hood. Yes, a lot of what liberals say is silly, even infuriating. But I know a few whose first reaction to those pictures would not be to score political points. Those liberal friends of mine, empathetic as they are, have an important role to play in our society, as a counterweight to us, just as we are a counterweight to them.

Incidentally, those pictures show basically how Great Britain lived in the early days of the industrial revolution. The basic problem is human greed and callousness, accentuated by occasional bouts of outright sadism. You will find that in all societies.

Well, this has not much to do with communism, and pretty much everything to do with "Chimerica", and the fact that China made a quick jump from pre-industrial to its current role as a highly accelerated manufacturing nation, with little in the way of regulation to protect consumers and the environment along the way.

As other posters have alluded to, this is what keeps the price of limitless plastic children's toys to a reasonable minimum.

Until every country and special-interest group agrees to stop pandering to this filthy Third World hell-hole, China will always look and smell like death.

North America certainly does not have a blemish-free record when it comes to environmental damage, but I submit that your comment quoted above is a gross exaggeration.

But even if we assume it is true, it tells us something about China when they seem to have little interest in learning from the mistakes others have made.

Tj: are you seriuos? Cholera breakouts happened in the US In the early 50s. I bet lots of people who visit this blog didn't have running water or indoor plumbing sixty years ago. And rivers like the rouge were so polluted they spontaneously caught fire. Automobiles had nil emissions controls. The Sydney tarpits ring a bell? Ever talk to someone who worked in the oilfield in the fifties?

How about we make energy-intensive industry so expensive in North America that it all goes to China where they could care less about burning clean?

All these defendants need is one Muslim on each jury of their peers and regardless of any evidence the result will be hung juries at best.

Of course we have a bad rep on fighting pollution, under DeYawn as EnvironMENTAL Minister, the emissions rose by 30%. When the Cons took over they were already fighting a losing battle. Every time this fact is presented to the LIEberals they say that it was in the past and not a reflection to our current conditions and government. Iffy was right when he said; “you didn’t get it done.” (Actually that is the ONLY statement that gets him a miniscule bit of credibility as well as the Puffin remark.)

We have to be careful though, Harper is using the term “Global Warming” and "carbon emissions" as a fact and he wants Canada to harmonize with the US on the Cap & Trade – which will add a tax on everything. You think Ontario and BC are angry over the Harmonized Tax, wait until the Cap & Trade will be added to that one. All that money going to China, India, Russia etc. will come out of your pocket as a tax payer. I guess you could call it the UN Tax on the working people of the world.

I think that Parliament should install at least ten wind turbines on Parliament Hill – This will show the environMENTALists that the government is serious. I also think every politician – Federal and Provincial - be forced to have one placed in their yards, so they can become accustomed to the noise pollution and dead birds in their back yards. Every environMENTALists like Dr. Fruitfly should also be forced to have them on their property.

In every other instance where properity levels increased, environmental controls increased. Many have argued that a major reason for the collapse of the FSU was the environmental catastrophies - most spectacularly Chernobyl - happening everywhere. Already in certain provinces and cities in india - Bangalore for example - old polluting vehicles have been banned. Cars manufacture in china have roughly the same emissions controls as ours do.

As a country's economy looks to move up market into the production of higher value goods (as the imminent dramatic rise in the yuan will necessitate the Chinese economy to do in the coming years) it makes good business sense to clean things up as that it a key issue for workers in that higher-skilled bracket.
