Why this blog?
Until this moment
I have been forced
to listen while media
and politicians alike
have told me
"what Canadians think".
In all that time they
never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio - "You don't speak for me."

thanks Mark, rather see vid such as this then the one showing the damage to the Fredericton Cenotaph.
This commercial runs on television often. It's always touching to see.
One photo, I think, that is most touching is one taken from the Second World War. A man is sent off to war and is marching to the ship that will transport him overseas. His young son is running after him crying out: "Wait for me, Daddy!"
Too moving.
We showed it in church on Sunday via YouTube.
Lest we forget. Thank-you.
Makes one a little misty eyed. Deserving and well done. Bless our fallen, our troops and our veterans.
canada troop need to move out of Afganstan

Obama down to four options on Afghanistan
By Laurent Lozano (AFP) – 3 hours ago
ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE — President Barack Obama is down to four strategic options as he nears a decision on whether to plunge thousands more troops into the Afghan war, the White House said on Tuesday.
Obama will sift the four approaches on Wednesday in his latest meeting with top military brass and his national security team, as his exhaustive review of the US posture in Afghanistan draws to a close.
"The president will have an opportunity to discuss four options with his national security team tomorrow," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday.
Gibbs, speaking as the president flew to a memorial service for 13 people killed in last week's rampage at Fort Hood army base in Texas, declined to offer details of the various options.
But he did hit out at a flurry of reports and leaks variously suggesting that Obama had already decided to send up to 40,000 more troops to war, after commander General Stanley McChrystal warned in September US strategy was failing.
"Anybody that tells you that the president has made a decision... doesn't have in all honesty, the slightest idea what they are talking about," Gibbs said.
"The president is yet to make a decision."
The sourcing of leaked reports carried by several US news organizations was unclear, though some observers have suggested some constituencies within the Pentagon may be trying to lean on Obama.
"I don't know that it's annoying as much as it is generally amusing to watch somebody or some group of people decide they know what only the president knows," Gibbs said.
"It keeps me busy and it's in some ways fun to watch two reports that contradict each other be reported virtually simultaneously."
The White House has said that troop numbers are only one factor of Obama's review, which is designed to assess the entire US posture towards Afghanistan and Pakistan and political developments in both nations.
Obama is not expected to make a final choice on his options in Afghanistan until at least the end of next week when he returns from a trip to Asia, though the White House says the review is at a "pivotal" stage.
McClatchy newspapers reported at the weekend that Obama was leaning towards sending more than 30,000 troops, and CBS television reported late Monday that the president had "tentatively" decided on deploying close to 40,000.
The reports cited three combat brigades as part of the buildup as well as support troops, and a contingent for training Afghan security forces.
Defense officials acknowledge three combat brigades would be available, including one from the 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum, New York.
That brigade was earlier scheduled to deploy to Iraq in January but has been told to stay put pending new orders.
A brigade from the 101st Airborne Division in Kentucky and a brigade of Marines would also be available. Army brigades are about 3,500 to 5,000 troops each, while a Marine brigade comes to about 8,000.
Some military officials have expressed frustration at the pace of Obama's deliberations over two months, while Republicans have accused the president of dithering.
McChrystal has asked for tens of thousands of additional troops to fight a deadly insurgency by Taliban militants and Al-Qaeda linked groups.
He presented a number of options in a troop request to the president, including a maximum of 80,000 troops, another option of about 40,000 and a third scenario with some 20,000, according to US media.
There are more than 100,000 NATO-led troops now stationed in Afghanistan, including nearly 68,000 American forces.
In another sign a decision may be near, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in Berlin Monday that Washington will give Afghan President Hamid Karzai a set of measures to root out the corruption.
Clinton signaled the Obama administration's growing impatience with Karzai, declared the victor of a fraud-marred election, when she said the steps are needed to leave "no doubt" as to what Washington expects from the relationship.
Massive fraud uncovered after the August 20 presidential election highlighted corruption in Afghanistan's government and complicated Obama's decision on future strategy.
The websites are a great idea especially for vets who might not be able to get out to receive the accolades they are due. Good on you Veterans Affairs indeed!
new: Shut the f@ck up!
A bit OT but relevant.
My son attended his brand new squadron's parade this past Sunday. He does not have uniform yet.
Several uniformed cadets, including a 16 year old guy taller than me, fainted just after standing in calm autumn weather for 30 minutes.
Folks, if you don't want to have a joke of an army, give your kids a bit of physical development, like running a mile a couple times a week.
In the years of military training while at secondary school in the USSR I never heard of anyone fainting. I thought that was girls' thing from 17th century novels. That parade was a jaw dropping experience - seeing cadets faint, including Scottish regiment.
A unit of CF attened and marched with the cadets. In my wife's words: 'God, those kids are skinny!..' She did not know those were not cadets, but real soldiers. Holy batman!
As I have to work tomorrow, I have already bookmarked in my Outlook Calendar to take the time at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
With this your vid, I will start my "celebration" at 1059. And I do mean celebration because I am proud and humbled for all that our veterans have done for myself, my kids and all future generations. The solemnity of the day does not detract from any of that.
Thanks Mark/Kate and all who contribute in their own small way to what should an obligatory statuatory holiday, here and around the world.
Also don't forget the excellent resource, The Memory Project.
And as for new/info or whoever you are today,
Remember the people we honour tomorrow are the ones who died for your right and privilege to spout your dribble.
And if you disagree with that premise then may I refer to you the final comment of Justsaying.
Semper Fidelis.

"presbypoet:
One irony of this horror:
These 13 deaths may have a more profound impact to save America, than if they had died in Afghanistan. They have helped reveal the danger of changes o has implemented, that were outside the observable frame. I.E. what other cases of internal treason has 0 stopped? Like the DA in St. Louis, unable to find time or reason to charge thugs. This evidence of a regime acting against the best interests of America, are important data points. These soldiers are not victims of tragedy, but combat losses, killed by treason.
The inability of 0 and his henchmen to admit there are people who’s “religion” demands they kill us, has been very clear this week. Not all will see. Some are still willfully blind and deaf. The battle continues.
We remember and honor the Marines today. Include my wife’s father, who also served on Guadalcanal. I will pull out the partly used message pad he brought home from there, we only found it after he died. He didn’t talk about it. It is an icon of a place where so many paid the price for our freedom. Tomorrow, remember all vets, even those of us lucky enough to serve on Oahu, (1966-1969). The guy on the list ahead of me went to Alaska, I got Hawaii. Either dumb luck, or divine intervention, you know the one i pick.
Fly your flag. Never forget."

DND/Canadian Forces ^ | 2009-11-07 | (press release)
Sappers Honoured With Rededication Ceremony
NR - 09.099 - November 7, 2009
CHILLIWACK, B.C. – The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Member of Parliament Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon, and Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Canada, and Major-General Daniel Benjamin, Canadian Forces Chief Military Engineer, today rededicated a memorial to all military engineers who have laid down their lives for their country.
The All Sappers Memorial recognizes the sacrifices of military engineers, known as sappers, in both peacetime and in war. There are four inscriptions on the memorial, including the one that conveys the essential spirit of all of them: “In Memory of All Sappers of the Empire who have given their lives in the Service of Their Country.”"

That gave me goose bumps. Thankyou to all who have served and are serving today.
Here in Owen Sound we had a Rededication of our Cenotaph on Sun nov 8/09. The city of owen sound, RCL Br #6, & a group of interested folks formed a committee to have the Cenotaph refurbished back to its original look & water flowing through it. We had the Remembrance Day Church service & parade & followed by parade march to the cenotaph.
I was proud to see such a turnout for the ribbon cutting & dedication around 500, and a beutifull sunny day.
"The sand of the desert is sodden red,-
Red with the wreck of a square that broke;-
The Gatling's jammed and the Colonel dead,
and the Regiment blind with dust and smoke.
The river of death has brimmed his banks,
and England's far, and honour a name,
But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks,
'Play up! Play up! and play the game!"
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
Here dead lie we
Because we did not choose
To live and shame the land
From which we sprung.
Life, to be sure,
Is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
And we were young.

"Afghan detainees at front of line for H1N1 shots
'Outrageous decision,' health minister says
Afghan detainees in Canadian military custody will be offered H1N1 flu vaccinations beginning Wednesday, while all Canadians who want to be inoculated may not be given shots before the end of December.
"That is something we are going to press forward with, at least offering whether or not they want the immunization," Task Force Surgeon Cmdr. Rob Briggs told The Canadian Press."

Could someone kindly direct me to some evidence that the Austro-Hungarian Empire planned to invade Canada and thus take our freedoms?
They didn't die for our freedoms, that is childish nonsense. The day should be to remind us of the folly and horror of modern war, not that I expect a bunch of war bloggers and warmonger blog commenters to understand that.
Canada shouldn't have been there in 1914 nor in 1939 and it is fair game to ask if western civilization would be in such rapid decline had Germany won. I argue that we would be much freer today if Germany had won, and that we fought on the wrong side.
In today's Ottawa Citizen there is rather perverse advertisement from the employees of the War Museum, who are on strike at the moment, thanking Canadian WWII solidiers whose "victory" led to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which among other things guaranteed their right to strike. Ugh. The museum also has an exhibit on camoflage as fashion, featuring camoflage high heels and other idiocies.
Canada is so "free" that it deported David Irving, arguably the greatest and certainly the most industrious and bravest WWII historian, because his (extremely well documented) books differ from the Goodthink peddled by the government and media.
Some freedom!
Yes, I salute the bravery of the men who fought, but I will not dishonour them by saying they fought for our freedom, that is nonsense. I will honour them by telling the truth, not lies, and by confronting and debunking war mongers wherever I see them.
Re new's comments, touche, justsaying.
I'm sickened by certain immigrants' cavalier attitude towards the sacrifices made by Canadian veterans, including my father and grandfathers -- who, by G*d's grace, came back from overseas.
There is a monumental cost to freedom: The democratic rights and freedoms that these immigrants and their families benefit from, from the moment they stepped onto Canadian soil, were bought at a great price: the blood, sweat, tears, and lives of many generations of Canadians.
On the Bomber Command Memorial Wall, Nanton, AB:
"Three thousand miles across a hunted ocean they came, wearing on the shoulder of their tunics the treasured name, "Canada," telling the world their origin. Young men and women they were, some still in their teens, fashioned by their Maker to love, not to kill, but proud and earnest in their mission to stand, and if it had to be, to die, for their country and for freedom.
One day, when the history of the twentieth century is finally written, it will be recorded that when human society stood at the crossroads and civilization itself was under siege, the Royal Canadian Air Force was there to fill the breach and help give humanity the victory. And all those who had a part in it will have left to posterity a legacy of honour, of courage, and of valour that time can never despoil."
One of the things that set the WW2 society/generation apart from today is what was taught in school....
My favourite lesson:
WESTMORELAND
O that we now had here
But one ten thousand of those men in England
That do no work to-day!
KING HENRY V
What's he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin:
If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour.
God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost;
It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires:
But if it be a sin to covet honour,
I am the most offending soul alive.
No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England:
God's peace! I would not lose so great an honour
As one man more, methinks, would share from me
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made
And crowns for convoy put into his purse:
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is called the feast of Crispian:
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian:'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispin's day.'
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day: then shall our names.
Familiar in his mouth as household words
Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.
William Shakespeare----Henry V
Meanwhile, Quebec forgets:
"Soldiers hit with eggs prior to Prince Charles' arrival"
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20091110/royal_visit_091110/20091110?hub=TopStoriesV2
How ironic, eh, Mark, that the motto of Quebec is
Je me souviens. I remember.
I guess what they remember is pretty selective ...
This is so important not only to Remember those old lions, but our Boy's & Girls now Under fire In this violent age.
Those who fight for the Liberty of others including their own, have our gratitude all.
For sacrifices done, most of us will never understand.
30,000 fought in Vietnam(mostly soldiers of fortune?) God bless them.
Received this in an email today and thought I'd share it:
It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion,
It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press,
It it the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech,
It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble,
It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial,
It is the VETERAN, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote,
It is the VETERAN who salutes the flag,
It is the VETERAN who serves under the flag,
Eternal rest grant them, oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.

Some ten years ago I became curious to the story behind the marble man who stands on a granite pedestal at the west end of the University Bridge in Saskatoon. No one seemed know much about him, so I took it upon myself to research the matter firsthand. What I discovered was a most fascinating story about a plumber who won the last Victoria Cross awarded during World War I, and in the process I was successful in having his Government of Saskatchewan VC plaque relocated to its correct location - the very least I could do to recognize his great sacrifice. In the interim I also created a webpage to honour Saskatoon's greatest hero - a remarkable soldier whose deed was later characterized by General Sir Arthur Currie as "superhuman", and to whom we all owe our eternal gratitude. I hope you can visit.
Lest we forget.

INDEED!!!
And each and everyone was greatly valued by the US forces. Maybe not by those traitors, like the thug from Chicago, Waxman, Frank and Pelosi.
The relationship between the US and Canada is more than an economic one. Prior to Pearl Harbour a vast host of US citizens mustered to Canadian and British colours----as they had prior to 1917 earlier.
These are the true volunteers----not like those who went to Spain to fight for the Communists/Fascists. It was not political but rather a shared patriotism.
Sensible, thinking Canadians shared the horror and grief of 911.....except for that treacherous idiot fringe that now worships OBOZO.
Arrest The War Bloggers: "[I]t is fair game to ask if western civilization would be in such rapid decline had Germany won. I argue that we would be much freer today if Germany had won, and that we fought on the wrong side."
And with that lunatic statement replayed before the jury, the case of the Crown versus "Arrest The War Bloggers" was proven.
Moving on from Arrest's mad ravings, please note that the sergeant saluting up there on YouTube is none other than Sgt Tommy Prince PPCLI.

Always a touching video. We enjoy our freedom from our veterans and fallen soldiers.

New, that was an interesting link. A unified homefront helped the war effort, I think. It's certainly not easy waiting for a husband or son to come home.
