Take Five is deadly cool, but may I mention that I’ve got Sir Paul McCartney playing three blocks from my window just now?!
Okay now, I’ll admit there are better Beatles, but the man is live!
We don’t get this sort of thing too often here in the Maritimes.
Whaddya mean? wasn’t he just there hugging seals with his, … well used-to-be wife?
BM, McCartney, I feel, was the most significant Beatle. John Lennon’s voice is better in my view, but instrument-wise, McCartney’s bass gave the Beatles their sound, while Lennon did pretty basic stuff. The least talented Beatle? Starr of course. He was good in flicks, but as a drummer… pretty mediocre. He was a passenger. A guy who was in the right place at the right time. You won’t see McCartney playing Casino Rama before his retirement… that’s a certainty.

Way off topic (you know what topic means don’t you) … this thread is about George Benson … performing Take Five … live … in Montreux.
And readers tips … if, on a subject that pleases Vitruvius.
ural, I believe that Reader Tips are an open free-for-all exchange of ideas and thoughts.
To that end, yesterday I learned about the “Wilhelm Scream”, the cinematic sound cliché used in over 140 films (wiki)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_scream
Here is a compilation of Wilhelm screams
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdbYsoEasio
The person thought to have recorded the scream was Sheb Wooley, who became famous for his song “Flying Purple People Eater”.
Now, that is off topic.

First of all, it’s not BM, it’s never BM. Mamba, please.
Secondly, let us consult our favorite furious papist on the topic of Sir Paul:
http://www.fivefeetoffury.com/:entry:fivefeet-2008-12-23-0000/
(a little typing never killed a man)
ural: I’ll gladly polish an apple for Vitruvius; Take Five is worth all Sir Paul’s collected works, any day.
(Except maybe “Hey Jude”)
And I really like Sir Paul.
Erik Larsen,
My snark is aimed at Vitruvius’s snark. Not you or any other commentator or SDA. Not in a Jackie Mason voice.
I literally wore the grooves off these albums:
Sgt. Pepper’s
Can’t Buy A Thrill and
Time Out.
And I have to thank you, Vit . I’m going to get a copy of the latter for my two girls today.
“Harper introduces family to Pope at Vatican”
“Teen Girl Falls In Open Manhole While Texting”
Have a look at the subtitle:
“Alexa Longueira Suffers Deep Cuts, Bruises After Landing In Raw Sewage, Blames DEP For Leaving Hole Unattended.”
Take Five, brilliant. Take Five with Benson improving the concept, more brilliant. Ringo had a sense of humour, I’ll take brilliance and humour for one thousand Alex. What do women like in a man?
Apparently Muhammad Ali said about Ringo Starr: “My dog plays better drums!”
It’s something to do with the difference between a smooth, rolling rhythm (Harlem drumming, I suppose) and heavy, thudding, Northern England style.
“Are the Beatles dying in the wrong order?” is floating around the internet nowish. I don’t endorse; I merely report.
I am awake and typing because bleet hath murdered sleep (different thread).
Also my chronic insomnia.
let’s play a game of lookit the journalistic sensationalism via MSM.

My two cents worth about Ringo. As someone who played drums in many styles, many bands, for close tp forty years, let me say that Ringo was perfect for the Beatles, just like Charley Watts is perfect for the Stones. Both are solid rock drummers.
Ringo is no slouch as a drummer. He has a style and a sound. I can pick out his playing immediately. The most valuable thing about a rock drummer is to be solid, not all over the place. Ringo is a very solid drummer. His style has been copied by multitudes of young and upcoming drummers. I was one of thing. To say that Ringo was a bad drummer is utter nonsense.
‘one of them’…it’s early
cant remember if it was John Lennon when asked who the best drummer in the world was remarked , “Ringo WASNT even the best drummer in the room”
a reference to Sir Paul.
No, Erik, Ural, and everyone else, Reader Tips is not “an open free-for-all exchange of ideas and thoughts”. There is no such place at Small Dead Animals; Kate has made that abundantly clear on multiple occasions over the years. Rather, Reader Tips is a place for Readers to put Tips that other readers might find interesting (so you don’t go off-topic with your tips in other entries), and to comment, to a reasonable degree, on tips that other readers have provided. Also, there’s the “seed tip” that opens each Reader Tips entry, namely, the Late Nite Radio show.
Those are the constraints for Reader Tips, although they are managed rather loosely in Reader Tips in particular, so, for example, I’m not necessarily going to bother deleting the comments above that are out of compliance. Yet so you know, with regards to this Reader Tips in particular, Take Five is on topic, Benson is on topic, but run-on discussions about Ringo Starr (which are not related to any reader tip in this entry) are not on topic, at least not until someone posts a valid Reader Tip about Ringo Starr.

Oh, oops, I bet thats off topic.
here we go , a reader tip.
A Star for a Starr
http://www.ringostarr.com/news.php
In southwestern Ontario, robins, after arriving back from wintering places in the south, start singing at dawn and continue singing until daylight.
But in the middle of July (give or take a few days) they become silent from early morning constant singing, except for a few occasional chirps on rainy days.
Now my question to SDA readers across this country is this, do robins in BC, Alberta, ‘Delisle or Saskatoon Saskatchewan’, ‘Lorette or Dufresne Manitoba’, ‘Moncton New Brunswick’, ‘Charlottetown PEI’ or ‘Come By Chance’ Newfoundland all stop their early morning singing in mid July or do they only stop in southern Ontario in that time frame?
Is my question silly?
Perhaps to some, but I truly am curious, whether it is a same time cross-continent event.
Humor an old guy, folks.
juxatuposition in one sentence
http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2009/07/chicagoan_barack_obama_lecture.html
Joe….here in Edmonton, they do indeed stop singing around end June/first week of July.According to a birding buddy of mine, they only really belt it out in spring because they are mating, and are trying to attract mates.Once the chicks are born, they are to beat from constant feeding,(and mission accomplished,so to speak),so they tone it down. But they do seem to start up a bit in late September.
Now if the darn magpies would just shut up!
“The US is planning a dramatically more assertive policy in Africa, sometimes backed by a threat of force, to end conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria that are seen as among the principal obstacles to the continent’s revival.”
I would have thought that the U.S. would be reluctant to be involved in an adventure abroad given that it could lead to increased troop deployment and more debt. An unusual move by O in my view.
(This of course depends on the reliability of the Guardian’s reporter.)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jul/10/obama-africa-democracy-ghana
Justthinkin – I am not a birder, just happened to notice a few years ago (mid July – no more early morning robin chorus) and we don’t have magpies in our part of the country, but hanks for the Edmonton bit on the robins.
As an aside – skunks like the taste of lager beer – it’s just that they never live to enjoy it a second time.
Vit, I was mistaken, I will stay on topic then. I really do appreciate the Distinguish Lecture, Documentary, and Interview Series – it adds a tremendous amount to this already fine site. Kind regards
Roger that, Erik. And look folks, just to be absolutely
clear about things, this is Kate’s site, so she makes the rules:

“Left brain, right brain
A 2005 study by the International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining described the state of the political blogosphere in 2004 Presidential elections, at a time when this medium was beginning to be important. It was a period when 9% of Internet users categorized themselves as ‘frequent’ or ’sometime’ readers of blogsites, a number significant enough to warrant attention. Howard Dean famously issued his information bulletins through them and “the Democratic and Republican parties further signaled the established position of blogs in political discourse by credentialing a number of bloggers to cover their nominating conventions as journalists.” However tentatively, the political blogosphere had arrived. And it was bifurcated, it seems, at birth.
The authors of the study divided their samples into the “conservative” and “liberal” parts of the blogosphere, depending on the positions they took on certain litmus-test issues, like gun-control, abortion and the like. Having found a way to assign colors to each dot, the researchers then examined how these blogs linked to other sites. They found curious differences in the way the conservative and liberal blogosphere were topologically organized. They resembled each other in that the respective “camps” tended to draw their links from like minded sites, but there were differences too. The liberal blogosphere was somewhat more insular than the conservative blog universe.
a great majority of the links remaining internal to either liberal or conservative communities. Even more interestingly, we found differences in the behavior of the two communities, with conservative blogs linking to a greater number of blogs and with greater frequency. … In our study we witnessed a divided blogosphere: liberals and conservatives linking primarily within their separate communities, with far fewer cross-links exchanged between them. This division extended into their discussions, with liberal and conservative blogs focusing on different news, topics, and political figures. An interesting pattern that emerged was that conservative bloggers were more likely to link to other blogs: primarily other conservative blogs, but also some liberal ones. But while the conservative blogosphere was more densely linked, we did not detect a greater uniformity in the news and topics discussed by conservatives.” (More)

I don’t think any apologies are necessary, Black Mamba, indeed, the dividing line between “a few comments” and “a debating society” isn’t clear, so there’s room at the margin.
Meanwhile, a reference to Ezra’s latest certainly is a valid Reader Tip, Bluetech, and that one’s a doozy. When I read the commissar’s propaganda in the National Post, I was astounded. However, I don’t speak about that in public, because what I have to say on that topic is (and I think is legitimately) prohibited by the criminal code.
In addition to Benson’s cool rendition of Take Five, I was pleased to see he was playing an earlier version of the same archtop Epiphone that I play, a Joe Pass. Nice tone, good neck and unlike the equivalent Gibson, doesn’t break the bank.

“The hypocrisy of Vancouver Sun’s Chris Parry & the Daily Kos
Research on Google and Freerepublic.com
Chris Parry wrote a scathing article in the Vancouver Sun about Jim Robinson and Freerepublic; comments Chris deemed racist about the Obama girls. He criticized the posted comments then blasted Freerepublic for not removing them in a timely fashion after a few days. Yet, Chris has now admitted he indeed is the racist blogger “hollywoodoz” from the Daily Kos who said many months ago it was time to set up republicans for false racist attacks. See reply #365 to this post, http://www.freerepublic.com/focu…s/2290929/ posts
Chris Parry posted racist comments on the Daily Kos but complains about others supposed racist comments. That double standard should not stand and Chris should be fired from the Vancouver Sun. Chris says Jim Robinson was wrong to not quickly remove the posts from FreeRepublic but Chris Parry does not complain about the Daily Kos not removing his own posts from 2006. Chris knew those racist posts were there since he posted them. Would it not be just as fair to hold the Daily Kos to the same standard he tries to hold Freerepublic to? Well Chris, when do we see your article criticizing the Daily Kos for leaving your racist rant online for Y E A R S ??????
Chris, you have been outed and neutered.

” Weather models missed massive N.S. storm that jammed highway: report
By Dean Beeby, THE CANADIAN PRESS
OTTAWA – Federal weather forecasters were blind to a vicious snowstorm that stranded 1,500 vehicles in Nova Scotia last fall because every one of their computer models failed to predict it, says an internal report.
Instead, staff at the Atlantic Storm Prediction Centre had to rely on telephone calls and emails from colleagues and friends to find out what was going on.
The “models did not predict anything resembling the north-south oriented band of heavy precipitation over the affected areas,” says the report, obtained by The Canadian Press under the Access to Information Act.
“There was no indication … that such an event was going to occur.” ”

The Age of Transitions

While browsing a few blogs today found a very interesting post of why Russians are underwhelmed by BO:
http://motls.blogspot.com/2009/07/no-obama-madness-in-russia.html
Maybe it just takes time to get the same immunity to propaganda they have in Russia.
Very interesting post maz2 about linking habits of conservative bloggers. Years ago, back in my usenet days, I found that those individuals who described themselves as “liberal” or “progressive” were the most narrow minded individuals on the thread and least likely to have their views changed by facts. While not personally a conservative, I’ve found that libertarians get a far more positive reception on conservative blogs than so-called “progressive” blogs. Would be interesting to see how these “progressives” do in real-world situations in comparison to the far more open-minded “conservatives”.

Hey Vit, who died and made you a demi-god? Reader’s tips is exactly where miscellaneous items are put. Your example from Kate’s archives was from a particular subject that commentators strayed from. There is more to Reader’s Tips than your cheese and music. Mamba’s comments was a segue from your Benson tip anyhow. Without going back through thousands of items in the archives, I can recall Kate reminding folks to stay on topic or put it in Reader’s Tips.
http://thechronicleherald.ca/Front/1131947.html
Question:Will Sir Paul’s eventual death be as widely covered as the kid from Neverland? We all know John Lennon seemed to be more important after his murder but George Harrison’s death was just a passing item in comparison.
Joe Molnar: Robins like most song birds mark their territory by singing. When the male robins come back in the spring they perch on the highest branch of a tree and sing for a few minutes before they fly to the top of another tree and begin singing again. This pattern continues until the eggs hatch and both mother and father robin are consumed with feeding the young. Once the young have flown the nest the male robin begins marking its territory again.
Yes, fine, agreed, Texas Canuck, I myself have mentioned staying on topic or putting it in Reader Tips, it was just a topic that came up, and I expressed my relationship to the matter, as a guest blogger, trying to understand how to play by Kate’s not formally delimited rules. As I said, there’s lots of room, it seems to me, at the margin; and so it’s not a big deal except when people get carried away, for some value of carried away, and as to what that value is, well: that’s off topic 😉
