1. Didn’t take long.
Mr Netanyahu’s “racist and extremist ideology”
” Nabil Abu Rdainah, a spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, said the Israeli leader’s speech “torpedoes all peace initiatives in the region “.
” Another Abbas aide, Yasser Abed Rabbo, told the AFP news agency that recognition of Israel’s Jewish character was a demand for Palestinians to become part of the global Zionist movement”.
The militant Hamas movement, which controls the Gaza Strip, said the speech reflected Mr Netanyahu’s ‘racist and extremist ideology’ “.
[Palestinian negotiator – ironic?] ” Erekat also said that there was no chance of Palestinian ever approving Netanyahu’s vision for their state.”He will have to wait 1,000 years before he finds one Palestinian who will go along with him with this feeble state,”
We know. We know.

2. Stratfor has been covering the Iran situation quite well, I’ve
thought, Stephen, though it’s still my understanding that
nobody’s quite sure what exactly is happening there, yet.

3. Measuring pain
By DavidWarren
Readers may recall my view of government statistics. I’m against them. Not against bookkeeping, but against trying to measure society (including “the economy”) in statistical terms.

4. Iran… pyjamasmedia has reported an account of +900 arrests, and blogger Miguel from http://devilsexcrement.com has heard of Venezuelan anti-riot police being sent from their circle of expertise to keep the rogues at bay… birds of a feather and all that….
it’s in the final paragraph here, stating that some in the Iran government ranks are refusing to strike sufficiently hard at the protesters… and so they have imported strong arms from other “trusted’ governments.

5. I think that it’s not merely that no-one knows what is going on in Iran but above all, no-one knows what is going to happen.
Obviously, the election was a fraud, and the current government is going to try to hold on to power. Ahmandinejad is using the ‘Obama tactic’ of not recognizing dissent; it simply doesn’t exist. His likening the uproar to the ‘sore loser emotions’ of a soccer game is a serious rejection of democracy. Can he, militarily, control the Iranian population? And he’s going to try to use force. But will that work? How long can he last?
As for Israel and Netanyahu, that speech was a smokescreen for Obama to use to back off and hide. Netanyahu isn’t recognizing a Palestinian state, for where would that state exist?
He didn’t say a word about getting the settlements – all the settlements – out of the West Bank. And he insisted, not that all other Arab states recognize Israel, but that they recognize Israel as a JEWISH state. What does that do for the Israeli Arabs and Christians?
Note that he said that ‘the land of Israel is the homeland of the Jewish people and that is the basis of our right to it’.
But this means that the West Bank is an essential part of that ‘homeland’, for the old texts include Judea and Samaria (the W. Bank). Is Netanyahu slipping in control of the W. Bank with this sentence? So where would a Palestinian state exist???
Plus, as I’ve said repeatedly, there aren’t any ‘essential rights’ to any land. If there were, then, we’d all have to get out of America. And Europe. And elsewhere. Our species, as tribes, has migrated over this planet since we first emerged as homo sapiens. There’s no such thing as an ‘essentialist original right to a land’.
You could equally say that that same area is the homeland of the Christian ‘people’..
He insists on Jerusalem as belonging solely to this ‘Jewish National Homeland’, despite its having the major Christian and Islamic historical sites.
And Palestine wouldn’t be sovereign, for it wouldn’t control its airspace. Would it control its borders? How? Would it have a police force? He wants no ‘military’.
So, my concern about this speech is that it is functionally empty. Where is the land base for a Palestinian state if the huge settlements remain?
Back to Iran. Can the Iranian people bring down a fraudulent government? Remember how Mugabe rigged the Zimbabwe elections and held on to power, insisting that ‘only God’ could remove him. So much for democracy. Frankly, this Iranian election has similarities. But I think that the Iranian people are more powerful, educated and ‘electronically connected’…So, we’ll see.

6. Matt lauer continues to carry david letterman’s water in this interview with Sarah Palin. Palin skewers him, appropriately.
She’s a gem: smart and classy. Why the tired old Rockefeller Republicans continue to debase her is somewhat amazing; she is a very strong voice for conservatism, and only that will get the votes back for the repubs. Chasing “independents” is fruitless; independents are only closet dems too cowardly to openly declare their preference.

7. “Investigators seized a .38 calibre revolver and a small amount of crack cocaine and marijuana from the suspect and his motor vehicle. The suspect is currently bound by three separate court orders prohibiting him from possessing a firearm. The orders amount to two lifetime bans and a 10-year ban.”

I thought a fourth ban might work but my wife said no, they should just take guns away from other people.

8. twitter is saying that the real Iran votes are:
Mousavi, 19.7 million
Karoubi 7 M; Rezaei 3 M, and
Ahmandinejad, 7 to 8 Mllion.
And since Ahman openly refused to guarantee Mousavi’s safety, then, will he try to, as Mugabe did with his rival, ‘arrange an attack’ against him? (Remember the car crash in Zimbabwe?). If Ahman did that, I suspect there’d be civil war.
I suspect that Ahman isn’t aware that the electronically linked modern world isn’t as easy to control as the old authoritarian top-down regime.
And Khameni, the Old Boy, approves? Is he that out of touch? The youth of today’s Iran aren’t going to be repressed that easily.
Allahpundit on Hot Air has a good question – how soon will hamas and hezbollah be ordered to attack israel to distract the Iranian masses? Very good question. And Ahman wants, wants, wants, Israel to attack Iran, so that he can move against the other Arab states.

9. I’m sorry; E.T. is learned, brilliant, I’m not etc. – no attempt to pick a fight; but the Persians are NOT arabs. Iran is not an arab country.

10. Yes black mamba, and many Persians resent Islam because they view Islam as being a form of Arabic imperialism.

11. Probably why they’re Shia (yes, I know a majority of Iraqis are too, but that’s still my theory and I’m sticking to it).
May I recommend “Beyond Belief”, by (Nobel Prize in Literature winner) V.S. Naipaul, published in 1998? It explores Islam and culture in “Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan and Malaysia”; non-Arab countries which have been “colonized”, in a sense, by the arabic religion.
Naipaul has no agenda on this; he’s worth reading.

12. I thought a fourth ban might work but my wife said no, they should just take guns away from other people.

13. As the longest day of the year approaches, I pondered the wobbling of the Earth and other phenomenon. I then just remembered a search I did once on the subject of the Polar Magnetic North shifting. There are some doom and gloomers who worry that there will be a sudden and huge polar SHIFT! before 2012…….
Actually this magnetic wandering is well known by navigators and its called a ‘change in declination’ by orienteering folks.
http://www.compassdude.com/compass-declination.shtml
These folks already know that the magnetic pole shifts slowly and is not the same from year to year and you should adjust for this slight change on your map when out orienteering with just a compass and (OMG!!) no GPS to guide you. SO.
hmmm.
It just seems the calendar seasons and the our temperate zones of old don’t match the weather patterns the way they used to and this trend has been going on for a few years, not suddenly. I am aware of the present science regarding diminishing sunspots and the cooling sun. No one knows how long this period will last. though some see it as a relief period to the sweltering heat of late. http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2009/apr/23/sun-cooling-down-space-climate
But even so, there are also scientists who are showing us that the magnetic north IS moving. It is also probably that earth’s lava flows are being effected by the magnetic north movement. ((Are we in a period of increased volcanic activity?)) btw…if you ask a global warming theorist about the carbon emissions of volcanic eruptions, they are quick to pull out charts and explain to you that these emissions are tiny and inconsequential, certainly when compared to the fossil fuel burning effects that we have on the environment. But if that is true then how come out of the other side of their mouths they admit that the year without a summer of 1816 was caused by ONE volcano!!? Tamura. So it might not warm the planet but it COULD cause it to cool off a bit?
Btw…we are having QUITE a few volcanic eruptions around the world presently. I don’t know if this is related or not.
http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/activity/
You can search and find scientusts who have shown us in ice samples that there was indeed an increase of Carbon in the ice during the ‘little ice age’ which was long before we started using fossil fuels.
So they have always concurred that volcanic eruptions can, indeed, make our climate cooler globally!
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/feb/04/cu-study-finds-volcanoes-likely-cause-of-little/

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn11638-climate-myths-human-cosub2sub-emissions-are-too-tiny-to-matter.html
and of course the latest news on volcano’s: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20227124.700-supervolcano-may-be-brewing-beneath-mount-st-helens.html
Along with the lack of sunspots and a cool period, are we in for a major shift in the weather patterns. ? Hey..winter clothing is rock bottom priced right now and on clearance. Stock up! 🙂

14. black mamba and joe – I’m aware that Iran is Persian and not Arab.
By ‘other Arab states’, I meant that Iran is interested in moving into Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria. I shouldn’t have used ‘other’ but I was thinking of ‘other than Palestine’. Sorry for the confusion.

15. The term http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8096065.stm“ rel=”nofollow nofollow nofollow”> ‘Right-wing’ is being associated with Holocaust denial and anti-semitism, along with criticizing Obama.
Remember, it was the National Socialist German Workers Party, not the National Free Market and Free Speech German Workers Party.

16. Is it just me or is anyone else completely ticked off at the MSM and the “King Iggy” mulling over if he shold call an election? Making this charleton out to be more powerful than he actually is makes me sick.
today’s headlines that he will not force an election implies that it was his election to call. Disgusting.

17.
But even so, there are also scientists who are showing us that the magnetic north IS moving. It is also probably that earth’s lava flows are being effected by the magnetic north movement.
Esther
Esther,
Most things are dependant on a point of View!
I think that Platetronics (continental drift) explains that the surface of the planet is what is moving such that most of Canada will be under the Polar Cap, near magnetic north…at one time we where near the equator
It’s my un-scientific, pure conjecture, opinion that we can speed up the movement
of Platetronics by overcoming the “Blish effect” (which is “Sticksion”) that results from heat & pressure between “any” two surfaces that share the same friction coefficient. Sticksion is a phenomenon that prevents movement in the direction of the applied force. It is overcome by a small force applied perpendicular to the direction of the applied force that created the Sticksion (earth quack). If we all stamp our feet on the East side of the rift, the west side will slide into the ocean (California)
I also think Sticksion has applications in fluid Dynamics.
Not much information available on Sticksion. But it’s know a the Blish effect, first noted in Artillery breeches… I have personally seem it in other disciplines, re avoidance

18. Texas have a look at ctv.ca Re Iggy

20. Texas Canuck: “today’s headlines that he will not force an election implies that it was his election to call. Disgusting.”
Well, it was his call … just like it’s your call when you don’t buy a Dodge every time you pass a Dodge dealership.
Pretend news generated by pretend journalists about a pretend Canadian.
IIRC the last election called by a lib was Jan 23, 2006 … since then we have been treated with non-elections every 2 or so months (with the exception of the time when PMSH called an election).

21. Any more good words/bon mots today from Iggy about “Canadian unity”?

23. Obama’s corrupt Chicago roots – Mob politics described by former Illinois governor Dan Walker
———————-
The machine’s political power has extended over the years far beyond Chicago. The machine has also controlled the state’s Democratic Party organization and the selection of candidates for both county and state office. In the state legislature, the machine has constantly controlled a large bloc.
With wheeling and dealing and masterful power brokering raised to an art form, the machine bloc has enabled Chicago machine politics to control both leaders and the flow of legislation in both houses. To get anything accomplished, downstate legislators must bow to the Chicago leadership.

24. I listened to about 15 minutes of Mikey talking down to the media today. They asked him what he would do? He basically said the same answer as Dion would have, except Mikey used dictionary words and he didn’t need the do-overs.

27. There are a number of news stories about the British government going ballistic over the placement of four Guantanamo detainees in Bermuda.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/article6480320.ece
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/americas-bermuda-solution-angers-britain-1704147.html
As I recall, Brits were enthusiastic about Obama, particularly his promise to close Guantanamo. I wonder if Brits still feel that way now that Obama is using Bermuda as a dumping ground for detainees that he does not dare resettle on US soil.
Obama’s promise to close Guantanamo sounded terrific until you realize that those people have to end up somewhere.
