Standing Up

In a piece published today in American Thinker entitled “Comedy, Bullies and American Politics,” Rosslyn Smith writes about the media entertainment industry’s ongoing portrayal of the Democrat/left as informed and just, and the Republicans — and their family members — as ridicule-worthy:

The entertainment industry has been bullying Republicans for most of my adult life and I am 56. It started with stereotypes in movies and TV shows. The small town prude, the uncultured suburban hypocrite, the greedy capitalist, the perverted man of God, the southern white bigot. By the 1980s among the self described elite, the very name of Ronald Reagan was treated like the punch line to an inside joke, the way to get a laugh those rubes who supported him could never even begin to understand.

(Along the same lines as what Smith describes, British comedian Alexei Sayle, a member of the Marxist-Leninist faction of Communist Party of Britain, no less, lamented back in the Thatcher era that the lamest comedians extant could get laughs by simply saying “How about that Margaret Thatcher, eh?”)

By the 1990s the assault began in earnest….While Republican men would routinely be portrayed as slow-witted slugs, the worst vitriol was reserved for Republican women and minorities, those who refused to adopt the mantle of victim and the spoils of affirmative action.

…It became a firestorm of rage with the nomination of Sarah Palin, an effective administrator who governed from the libertarian side of the party while following social conservative principles in her personal life, and thus would appeal to many voters. But attacking Palin wasn’t good enough. The attack was carried to her children.

Smith sees the grassroots view in this blog comment: “The anger over this is….more than just about Sarah Palin. It’s about years of being told we are intolerant and intolerable when we are not, and having to eat anything an everything an elitist liberal media culture throws our way,” but she sees a lack of desire among urban Republicans and party insiders to stand up to the assaults and believes this reluctance has consequences:

….By letting the bullies dominate the cultural debate, Republicans have allowed the worst of the stereotypes to rule in the minds of those economically upscale members of urban and suburban America who are mostly passive users of political information….

She concludes,

No matter which way I look at it, while turning the other cheek in the face of the relentless media entertainment industry bully may be good for one’s soul, it has turned out to be a terrible way to build a political party.

The whole thing is definitely worth reading, and is relevant in a Canadian context as well.

  1. It reminds me of a leftist that made an insulting remark that equated gun owners with diminished intelligence and culturally somehow less than, knowing that I was a firearms enthusiast, a remark that he thought would pass and the insult would have reached its mark, namely me.
I took his arguments apart factually, made him look like an idiot and quite possibly a liar. At the conclusion, as he stood looking at me in shock, thoroughly trounced, I said “Scary isn’t it!! Large aggressive rednecks with brains, and there are millions of us.”
I thought he was going to have some kind of seizure. The point of this is that we can not under any circumstance let these pieces of trash spread their poison. It’s cultural assassination. Depersonalize the enemy, that way it is easier to do what ever you want to them without conscience interfering with what you do or say.
In the words of Jeff Cooper RIP, “Don’t take cover; make your enemy take cover.”

  2. Read “Makers and Takers” by Peter Schweizer. It says it all.
For the longest time (even now), anyone even remotely conservative was physically, mentally and emotionally retarded. No one has ever had to justify this notion, only repeat it. People have become so ugly (socially and emotionally) that even appealing and reasoning with them becomes futile. Why shouldn’t Governor Palin defend herself and her children? Yet, if you tried to speak to someone that way, they wouldn’t get it.

  3. That is a standard procedure for fighting a war effectively. First you dehumanized your enemy so it makes it easier to kill them.
Conservatives do try to behave as the ‘adult’ side of the culture war, but it’s not working. We need to get ‘mad as hell’ and not take it anymore.
    The meek will inherit slavery.
And never forget, the one thing all slaves have in common … they don’t own guns. Keep you powder dry if you have any.
Once conservatives and coincidentally all others become slaves of a the brutal government Obongo is building, there will be no Republican Abraham Lincoln to save us as he did the black slaves of the past. And you can be sure that our slave master’s minions will be the black dominated Acorn turned gestapo.
    Crazy but true.

  4. The defense of the insult on Gov. Palin was that it was not her underage child who was being trashed.
So lefties are OK with demeaning women and children, just so long as they are not underage.
Lefty liberators have come so far, heh?
I stopped watching those shows awhile back. Meanness, crudeness, dehumanization of those with whom one disagrees is not the signs of enlightened or progressive society.

  5. I think I know what kept it going for so long: Conservative types tend to feel ashamed when they “can’t take a joke.” It’s part of the reluctace to complain.

  6. “The defense of the insult on Gov. Palin was that it was not her underage child who was being trashed.”
    That’s exactly right. Here’s Letterman’s “apology”:
“These are not jokes made about her 14-year old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping, or having sex of any description, with a 14-year old girl.”
That, my friends, is someone shooting himself in the mouth. His apology is worse than the original “joke.”
He’s just one more manifestation of the amoral viciousness of tribal Democrat entertainment industry. But as Rosslyn Smith suggested in the linked-to piece, so-called middle America isn’t onside with the habits and lack of morality of the Democrat urbanites, who are so self-righteous in their belief in the superiority of their political views that they consider the children of politicians to be fair targets.

  7. The excuse that he used regarding the age of the girl he was referring to is utterly ridiculous. So he’s saying its not okay to rape a 14 year old but it IS okay to rape an 18 year old. By any standards it is always WRONG to rape any person of any age and even a liberal fool like Letterman the Loser should know this.

  8. Sarah Pallin’s nomination certainly put the wind up(panic) the democrat’s and their media minion’s kilts.
What the hell kind of intelligent adult gives a crap about Matt Damon’s opinion on anything????
The media immediately dispatched no less than 30 “investigative journalists” to Alaska to find dirt on Pallin but to date none to check out BamBam’s past….and associations.(His school marks, courses, finances)…..Without the internet Ayers, Wright, his racist pastor, etc would have never come to light….and any disclosure is labled as “racist”…..BTW what did happen to that birth certificate????

  9. Was there ever a time when everyone understood that we’re all passengers in the same fragile boat on a stormy sea, and that our best chance for group survival lies in thoughtfully and respectfully considering all of the different ideas about how best to row it, and then agreeing to some workable plan that everyone commits to supporting, so we can all pull together and not waste time fighting and jostling with each other rather than getting on with it? Because we all float or sink together, and we all get to where we’re heading together, or none of us make it?
    What’s wrong with us?

  10. We won’t even stop briefly at Letterman anymore. If I recall correctly that hit counts in the viewer rating reports.
I can sacrifice the Top Ten to make him squirm at the ratings drop.

  11. The problem, as I see it, is that the left operates within only one-way communication. They talk about ‘debate’, as does Jennifer Lynch, but for the left, debate doesn’t involve their answering questions, discussing opposing points of view, analyzing factual data. No.
Debate for the left is one-way; they tell you what is ‘right’. Period. I think it’s because their worldview is utopian, which means that it is all ‘in the mind’. It doesn’t exist. The fact that it can never exist is never even whispered.
But, as a perspective existing only in mental images, with no actual reality to support it, with no hard data, with no logical foundation, the perspective operates within pure emotion. Hope and Change.
The left preaches; that’s what they call ‘debating’. The monologue. The endless campaign of Obama, where he gets his way by preaching and by threatening that a ‘crisis’ is imminent if you don’t accept his agenda.
I’ve found that it’s useless to actually discuss anything with the left. Since their mode of interaction is one-way, and their perspective is completely ideological and ‘in the mind’, then, if you rebut their monologue, they react defensively.
They cannot provide facts or reasons for their opinions and all the listener can do is accept them. If you reject them, then, you are rejecting them personally.
So, they immediately resort to emotion. They’ll instantly start the trashing, the name-calling and so on.
You can see all the examples on this blog. It is almost unheard of, for someone on the left, to factually and logically debate or discuss an issue with someone with an opposing view.
Conservatives, however, will readily do so. But, the left can’t handle it – so..who is there to debate with?

  12. Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals”
Rule 5: Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon. It’s hard to counterattack ridicule, and it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage.
Rule 6: A good tactic is one your people enjoy. “If your people aren’t having a ball doing it, there is something very wrong with the tactic.”
Most liberals and others on the left of the spectrum knowingly or unknowingly follow Alinsky’s anti-capitalist, Marxist teachings including the One–it’s time to recognize this for what it is and respond accordingly.

  13. The reason I like Rush, Sarah, Mark Steyn, Ezra, Michelle Malkin, Kathy Shaidle and Kate is that they fight back when attacked – they don’t do a Ned Flanders and turn the other cheek. The reason I now despise David Frum and his ilk is because they will compromise any principal in order to be liked. NRO is doing fundraising this weekend and although I enjoy reading their reasoned intelligent debates about all issues they behave more like Ned Flanders than Sarah Pallin. Likewise Captain Ed and Allahpundit at Hot Air are way to willing to give the other side the benefit of the doubt – useful idiots both of them.
Too many Conservatives think we are participating in a public debate that we can win by good arguments and behaving honourably. Lib-Lefties and Democrats by and large view this as a civil war where the end justifies the means. Lying about and ridiculing your opponent is fair game (Pallin). Cheating and stealing elections is fair game (Adscam, Acorn). Using the law against your opponents is fair game (HRCs in Canada, Corrupt justice department in the US going after only republicans). Shutting out all conservative ideas from kindergarten to graduate studies at universities is fair game. Discriminating against hiring conservatives in public institutions is fair game. Using the media and entertainment industry to attack, ridicule and dehumanize conservatives is fair game.
The left has no sense of fair play – they just want to win at all costs. If conservatives do not realize this and fight back twice as hard we will die – just like old Europe is dying because they refuse to breed. We need to get our ideas back in the schools at all levels. We need to get our ideas portrayed fairly in the media and entertainment industries. And most importantly we need stop worrying about what those left-wing hypocritical jerks think about us.
We need to be less like Ned Flanders and more like Bugs Bunny whose motto when attacked is… “Of Course You Know This Means War!!!!”

  14. fritz – I agree that we can’t ‘turn the other cheek’, but how does one attack ‘shadows on the wall’? The leftist utopia is sheer fantasy.
I think what one can do, is simply fight with facts. Sarah Palin is fighting Letterman; some say she should just ignore him – because he’s getting so much publicity out of it.
But, calling him to account, by refusing to accept his fraudulent apology (I didn’t mean 14 year olds) by then declaring that this means he approves of raping someone older than 14..that’s a smart move.
So, constantly pointing out to ‘them’ the results of their assumptions and assertions…that’s what the Conservatives have to do.
And, setting up and repeating endlessly a ‘mantra’ of what it means to be Conservative. Small government, support for free enterprise, support for individual freedoms, insistence that the people make the law in their legislatures, etc.
So, when the left tries to tell us what Conservativism means – we tell them that they are living in their deluded world….and tell them what it really means.

  15. The comments here are terrific. I hope that everyone not only writes how they feel, but also articulate their thoughts to those who spew the utopian version of life that us’knuckle-dragging, redneck, etc’are keeping them from having. We must not only talk the talk ,but also walk the walk. When someone trots the tired lines out, such as ‘2 million dead in Iraq’or the ‘disappearing polar bears’ or ‘Bush said they had WMD’s’ or any of the many myths, challenge them. Ask them where they got their facts.Ask them for hard data. ‘Everyone knows that,or it is common knowledge’is not a real answer.Be prepared to be ridiculed and scorned.Slaying their myths is not for the faint of heart,it is akin to finding out the truth about Santa, they will not like you,but they must find out sooner or later. I prefer sooner.

  16. According to NYTimes columnist Frank Rich, the United States is already seething with “right wing rage”…
No, really! And it’s a problem, because according to Frank, some lone gunman is going to get fired up and shoot somebody. For years the left salivated and joked about political assassination, now suddenly it’s a real concern because the right is getting angry and must be silenced.

  17. Let us see now.
The republicans have been and are getting bad press for the simple reason that the schools of “journalism” teach precisely that.
The schools teach mostly warm and fuzzy socialist/fascist totalitarianism.
You see if you are a kid and don’t agree with the teacher “my goodness that is just no good” as was illustrated by the familiar video of a teacher admonishing some kids because they said they liked McCain.
On the other hand, those of conservative or republican thought would never do such an oppressive thing to others. If they did not agree they simply would go on and perhaps ask why they did not like the other guy/woman as the case may be and go on to other things.
A conservative accepts freedom of thought, people are free to think and say what their pleasure is. Socialists/fascists can’t do that by their nature, for their nature is the control of others
A conservative may query a particular argument on the part of an opponent; thought will not belittle anyone even if he thinks different. Socialists/fascists can’t do that by their nature, for their nature is to dictate to others on how, when, where, why, …..
A conservative would be like the good natured Tramp of Charlie Chaplin, where he will defend himself in a fight, if he looses or wins; he will just shrug it off and walks off into the future. A conservative is an optimist. Socialist/fascist is in the darkness walking in intellectual circles not being able to understand why there is darkness, looking for somebody to blame for the darkness while he himself is the cause of it.
Letterman was funny, recently has become unhappy with himself. Letterman had O’Reilly on his show a few times. Their sparring does become somewhat heated, Letterman does not like O’Reilly though there is a sense that in private they maybe friends. On this particular show Letterman heaped scorn on O’Reilly for supporting the war in Iraq. O’Reilly asked if Letterman watched his show to see if Letterman can apply his criticism to an actual statement or report, Letterman of course said that he did not watch O’Reilly’s show though he read about O’Reilly. O’Reilly slum dunked Letterman by asking a simple question, if he (Letterman) believes everything that they write about him (Letterman), of course he had no answer or a comment.

  18. Please, it’s not like you don’t try the same approach- (1/2 Hour News Hour, An American Carol) But being the decidedly humourless bunch the angry right fringe are, it falls flat.
You do the simplistic, simple-minded, hypocritical demagoguery of Faux News and open mouth radio very well, but comedy…. not at all.
It is almost unheard of, for someone on the left, to factually and logically debate or discuss an issue with someone with an opposing view.
ET, the small dead mind cannot be enlightened or illuminated.
It cannot be engaged in discussion nor debate.
    It can only be mocked.

  19. ET: I’ll give a fuller reply in the next few days as this requires some real brain work which is beyond my pay grade. But off the top of my head the first thing I believe is that we have to stop treating politics as an argument to be won (as much fun as that is for some of us). As you and other posters at SDA have stated many times that facts and reason do not matter to these people – you cannot persuade the unpersuadable. Fortunately we do not have to.
In our democracies the majority of people have no idea what we are talking or arguing about. They live their lives pursuing a career, a job, a mate, a family, and some fun with any extra time and money. Many of these people (like my sister) live their lives much more conservatively than I yet vote liberal because everyone knows conservatives are knuckle dragging uncool racists hatemongers who want to control women’s wombs. Our task is to get the people who are conservative by nature (which I believe is the majority) to think that conservatives are cool enough to vote for. Unfortunately whether at school, work, or play the message they get is that conservatism and conservatives suck.
So how do we do this? Well first we are going to have to challenge the negative conservative message on all fronts. The left organized and actively planned to take over schools, entertainment, the legal world, news, etc. It did not happen by accident. And they had the help of the unions. Funny how often conservatives quote Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals. Where is the conservative’s guide for knuckle draggers – the conservative manifesto? (Mark Steyn and Kathy Shaidle you have another book to write.)
If we are to defeat the left (or at least trim them back to manageable size) it will take organization and decades of work. Committed conservatives are going to have to take time away from career and family and devote it to taking back our schools, media and public square. This is alien to us but not unprecedented. The tea party movement in the US is one example. In Canada we had the Reform Party which likewise motivate primarily conservatives to get involved. Churches in the past have also played a big role. In stead of fruitlessly trying to win debates we will have to put our efforts into organization. What this looks like I have to think about.
In the mean time we have to start as individuals to challenge those people and institutions that disparage us. I know many at this blog do this already but we are going to have to step it up a notch if we do not want things to get worse. Parents need to get involved in schools to challenge the leftward drift. We need to write media and politicians to challenge biases in the news, government institutions and in popular culture. We need to support conservative performers (Steven Crowder, AlphonZo, RedEye) even if they are not yet as good as the lefties. We need to donate conservative books to libraries. We need to threaten boycotts of companies that support people who disparage us. We need to support each other in these tasks. The left did it – so can we.
We also have to take the gloves off and stop being respectful of those who disrespect us. For example David Letterman should be called the Pervert Letterman because that’s what a 62 year old man who jokes about raping 14 year olds is. If enough people start referring to him in this fashion it will have an impact. For example google searches on pervert will soon find Letterman’s name pop to the top. People who are not aware of the story will wonder why they see him referred to as a Pervert.
In short, we need to take the time, effort and money to organize to bring some balance back to the public square. We cannot wait for the Conservative Party to do this for us – they are followers not leaders. If we do not do it who will and what will be the consequences for all of us?

  20. So how do we do this? Well first we are going to have to challenge the negative conservative message on all fronts.
No, first we are going to have to establish that there actually is a conservative message. In an ET post above,
Small government, support for free enterprise, support for individual freedoms,…
Show me a mainstream political party in the US or Canada that actually represents these core values. Not the Tories. Not the Republicans. Both of them are becoming shadows if what they should be. They have become as guilty as liberals of selling out their values in the name of power – power which has, for the time being, disappeared in the US, and is historically very transient in Canada.
    “Conservatives” are no longer represented.

  22. I used to view the lefty’s as nut’s but harmless. Just the group that got to much female hormones at birth or lack of oxygen or something. We needed them to keep some sort of balance in the world. But no more, They are deranged and a serious threat to the world. And I think may end up destroying it. Rolled right off their rollers, indeed true.

  23. Axeman: You are right there are no Conservative political parties. The so-called Conservative Party of Canada is a centre-right coalition. Its first and foremost job is to elect enough members to get power. They will go in the direction where they think the votes are. If these parties see a culture where the government is seen as the answer to all the problems then this is the direction they will go. It is up to you to convince them that promoting small government, supporting free enterprise, supporting individual freedoms,… is where the votes are. Right now you have a few organizations on your side such as the Fraser Institute, The Taxpayers Federation and the National Citizens Coalition pushing some of your conservative values. Who else is?

  24. Smith’s comments are all too true. A conservative woman is not only viewed as mistaken; she is viewed as a traitor (ditto for conservative members of minority groups). The left’s worst vitriol is directed at people like Clarence Thomas and Sarah Palin.
Sarah Palin built a record for herself by attacking corruption in Alaska regardless of party affiliation. She took on the Republican Party establishment in her state by running against an incumbent *Republican* governor — and winning. Her main platform plank was that politicians of both parties were too cozy with the oil industry and Alaskans deserve better. There is a lot in Sarah Palin to admire.
But after the entire media establishment set out to ridicule her, she is now little more than a punch line. When Obama would say something stupid in an interview — which happened quite a bit during the campaign — it would be quickly forgotten, just as we conveniently forget occasions when our friends say something stupid. When Sarah said something inept, it would be endlessly criticized as proof of her incompetence. Time and time again, interviewers would interrupt Obama to guide his wording. Sarah Palin received no such consideration, and even when she gave a straightforward, clear answer, interviewers (such as Charlie Gibson) would adopt a confused expression and say “I don’t quite follow.”
If Obama had been from Alaska and said “You can see Russia from parts of my state,” it would have been heralded as an example of his impressive speaking skills.
And when other avenues of attack failed, pundits would point out that as a governor, Palin had no foreign policy experience. The fact that Reagan, two Bushes, Carter, and Clinton followed that exact career track was conveniently forgotten. Obama, then a first-term senator, didn’t have any foreign policy experience either, but again, Palin was measured by criteria that were never applied to others.

  25. It’s all quite simple, as I’ve written several times before.
Never let the bastards define you.
Always be vocal about what you believe in without being judgemental about others’ viewpoints.
Get rid of the defeatist attitude … you’re better than that.
You go Sarah! You’re living proof that a woman can have it all without resorting to victimhood … what they hate about you is what’s so attractive about you.

  26. Grover Norquist said that “the culture is overwhelming the politics.”
    This is our problem.
Hollywood, universities, and the state-run media create the culture.
Until or unless we can get some dominance in some of these areas, we’re destined to be playing catch-up.
The foolish truth of it is that he who defines what is cool, irrespective of how utterly ludicrous that is, will create the political direction.

  27. many good comments here, BUT, a couple of things that need to be looked at
    1) statistics dictate that certain jobs will more likely be filled by “liberals”, because they tend to be more likely to get “higher” education, so when a job reuires higher education there will probably be more liberals applicants, and so there is a greater chance of a liberal filling said job. As time progresses and more people are hired by said entity the chances of a greater % of liberals being hired becomes greater, as people will gravitate to their onw kind….so we need to encourage conseravite types to higher education without being “converted” to liberalism
2)religion is a personal thing, convince religious people to spread their religion by example, and NOT by preaching, as it turns a lot of people off, myself included, as I’m an atheist and resent some one preaching at me or when politically representing my demographic!!!!
    3) people are best dealt with in the manner they deal with others, learn this and use this method
    JMNSHO:-)))

  28. exetax, what is wrong with us? most don’t know how to row or what a boat is really for. a consenus on how or where to row will often not get you where you want to go or keep the boat afloat. look at the u.s. blooming debt.

  29. I’ve noticed an interesting thing. people like phillboy and the other trolls here are always happy with more and bigger government, more and bigger taxes, more and bigger interference by government with everything… except what -they- are interested in.
Example, the internet. Any proposal to tax the web or to control the (illegal!) downloading of music or video is met with great resistance from otherwise hard core Leftists.
Example, the arts. Any “art” which denigrates or criticizes Christianity is of course applauded, any art which glorifies God or otherwise approves of Christianity is booed. But again, any move by government to do anything other than pay money into “the arts” is resisted furiously by the Left.
Which leads me to the conclusion that Lefties don’t really believe in Big Government as a force for good in the world. They see it as a hammer to be used upon people they hate, of whom there seems to be a wide variety. Propaganda is just one weapon they use for this purpose.
Conservatives OTOH seem willing to forgo the hammer of government and deal with people they hate on a one-on-one basis. Government just gets in the way of that.
In that spirit I find the best way to deal with Liberals is by unplugging the television. This is a valuable weapon. By crippling their propaganda machinery, we force them to come face to face with us, their hated enemy, in actual conversation. When that happens their policies and ideology comes out the loser every time.
Kind of like what’s going to happen to pillboy if ET deigns to notice his poo-stain of a comment.
Now, as for Mr. Letterman and his obscene suggestions, I say speak on sir! Speak on, with your foulness and your misogyny. Let us know how you really feel about Christians, Conservatives, uppity wimmen who don’t know their place, and anyone who doesn’t follow your liberalism in every jot and title. Tell us all your creepiest thoughts about what should happen to those people.
Those people who make up 2/3rds of your paying audience.
