  2. Thankyou – such an incredible ‘event’. As Vitruvius says, ‘man, what a species’.
I sometimes play Shubert’s Ave Maria (Leontyne Price)..and then..Bach’s Ave Maria (Kiri Te Kanawa). Magnificentio.
    Thanks.

  3. I caught the Canadian Press foretelling Harper painting a “Rosy Picture” in the economic report: implying dishonest spin ever before they saw it.
After my post they changed the story.

  4. Tonite my wife and I are spending our last evening with our beloved Jazmin. Jaz is our Yorkie. We’ve had her for five years and we recently found out that she has kidney failure. Today has been particularly difficult as tomorrow Jazmin has a date with destiny.
I did tonite what I do evey night – I tuned into SDA. I refuse to believe that the blessed “Ave Maria” was there by happenstance. It was there for me, my wife and yes – our Jazmin. We, all three, heard it. I can honestly say that it calmed my soul.
Thanks, Vit. Great and timely choice.

  6. Oil price leaps to year’s high: Predictions of $250 a barrel on fears for oil reserves, hopes of economic recovery and hedging against weak dollar
The sub-headline refers to the Russian chairman of Gazprom, who’s reiterating a prediction he made before the oil price plummeted. Nonetheless, the more sedate authorities also quoted seem to agree that oil is going moderately higher from $71. The most bearish authority quoted, BP chairman Tony Hayward, talks about a $60-$90 range as being “rational.”
Should these people be correct, it would be salutary for Alberta…and what kind of human being would wish otherwise? Still, oil’s almost doubled in the last six months. These “more of the same” predictions, coming on the heel of a huge bear market, sound like they came from people who think that the ’08 plummet was merely an interruption of a still-existing bull market. I don’t see the kind of scaredness that normally comes at the end of a bear market. Try contrasting their tone to stock-market forecasters around the time equities bottomed last March.
What I’m saying is, those forecasts are a lot like the ones for the banks as of November-December 2008. Something along the lines of, “Yes, there was a huge drop, but banks have been beaten down to undervaluedness and they’ve already hit the floor and…”
Normally, bull markets start again when the few bulls left are hedging their words, if not their buys. The oil bulls may be right about oil, but it would be unusual if they were. If they are, then we’re in for a real spate of inflation. No other force could have made a semi-mature bear market turn a quick 180 degrees.

  7. Daniel;
I think you were getting close to an economic reality…Namely, is the price (real value?) of oil actually going up, or is the American dollar beginning its inevitable inflationary slide?
Question: How is the Yank dollar doing against other commodities?
Maybe we’ll soon be pricing oil in Canadian dollars!
    Changes are fast approaching…

  8. “A different bob”
My heart goes out to you as I had to go through the same agony last year with my 12 y.o. german sheppard Lazarus. But although I knew in my heart it was the “right” thing to do it was still very hard.We also have horses and I alway remember a poem I read called “Ode to the Horse” where the horse just asks that you feed and water him , don’t mistreat him and when the “time” comes, do what is right for him regardless about what is right for you. I held Lazarus’s head in my hands as the vet administered the drug. As Lazarus took his last 3 breaths my heart broke. But what consoled me somewhat was the knowledge that in the 12 years he was with me not ONCE did I mistreat him and the love I had for him was returned many times over by his unconditional devotion to me.

  9. To: a different bob
I can relate so well with your situation.
In 1996, I had a Basenji that was an estimated 15 years old. He was suddenly afflicted with a weak heart and lung failure. Amazingly, less than a week before his illness, he was in the truck with me, out on the farm. He seemed OK.
I was alone with him when he died. I had gone to town that day, and brought back a CD of Zamfir. I was sitting with him on the porch, the tune was “I will always love you.” If I live to be 100, I’ll never forget that tune.
    I sympathize with your pain.
PS: Zamfir does a great number on “Ave Maria” by Schuberts.

  10. a different bob: Three years ago tomorrow, my husband and I had to do the same thing for our dear family dog. It was the right thing to do, he was very sick (probably kidney failure), and he only looked at his ball and didn’t even nose it just before we took him to the vet.
Our hearts were/still are broken, but we have the great memories and we know that we did the right thing. He was miserable, and keeping him alive would have been selfishness on our part.
‘Beautiful Ave Maria. I have sung it many times in church choirs, always in Latin, the language I prefer for this prayer. But sung like Barbara Hendrick’s does it, English will do!

  12. Bob and Penny: Ave Maria is one of those magic songs that seems to rise above it all to provide a view of the larger landscape of our lives, and imbue us with grace. Glad you liked it — it’s always nice to hear that a song I’ve posted (I only do Wednesday’s LNR) is appreciated.
Sorry to hear about Jaz. I’ve got a soft spot for all animals, but dogs are special; when they pass on, you always remember their character and the way they looked at you. Sounds like Jaz had a good and very happy life with you, just the way it should be.

  14. Nationwide attention about President Obama’s lack of producing a long-form birth certificate proving his eligibility for office got a boost today when top-rated radio host Rush Limbaugh joked about the subject in comparing Obama to God.
Asking rhetorically what God has in common with Obama, Limbaugh said, “Neither has a birth certificate.”
“How do they differ?” Limbaugh continued. “God does not think he’s Obama. And there’s another difference. Liberals love Obama.”
Limbaugh repeated the punch lines several times throughout his show and noted, “another difference is that Obama gets better press. … Another difference is that God only demands to be worshipped once a week.”
Later, he sprinkled in other differences, including:
God asks for only 10 percent of your money
God gives you freedom to live your life as you choose
God’s plan to save us is actually written down for you to read
Upon hearing the discussion, one listener in Miami phoned in to tell Limbaugh, “You’re acting like you’re God.”
The host responded, “I am better than most people but I don’t think I’m God. Obama does. He’s got a messianic complex.”
Limbaugh commented that left-leaning listeners “can’t stand any comedy about Obama.”
The comparison to God comes after recent comments by Newsweek editor Evan Thomas, who said on MSNBC’s “Hardball” that Obama was “sort of God.”
With the exception of extensive coverage by WND, the subject of Obama’s eligibility for office based on his birth record has received little, if any, attention from large media outlets.
Limbaugh previously mentioned the birth certificate issue just days before the 2008 election, when Obama’s campaign announced the candidate would rush to Hawaii to visit his dying grandmother, but took several days before actually making the trip. Limbaugh said on Oct. 23:
See, I think this is about something else. You know what’s really percolating out there? I’ve been laying low on this because it hasn’t met the threshold to pass the smell test on this program.
This birth certificate business, this lawsuit that a guy named Philip Berg filed in Philadelphia in August for Obama to produce his genuine birth certificate and he still hasn’t replied. You’ve got a deathly ill grandmother, you are going to rush to her side a few days from now, when you first announced this, you’re going to rush, you’re going to hurry, you’re going to make tracks, you’re going to get over there because you don’t want your grandmother to die before you got there like your mother did, but somehow you keep campaigning, you take three days to get over there, if he’s left yet, and this birth certificate business, I’m just wondering if something’s up. I have no clue, and folks, I’m telling you, this has not reached the threshold until now, and it’s popping up all over the place. There are a lot of people now that are starting to speculate and be curious about this.
I don’t know, let’s say for example that somebody does come up with proof that something’s screwy with his birth certificate and something’s screwy about the fact that he’s allegedly a natural citizen, American citizen, but may not be, dual citizenship, born in Kenya, who knows, there’s all kinds of stuff out – so what? What’s going to happen this late in the campaign? Do you think if it’s proven that they’re going to dump him? That’s not going to happen. But still, these are just questions that I have. And, look, both of my parents have died. When I was told the end was near, bam, I got there, fast as I could. I didn’t announce to the audience, “I just got word my father is said to be passing away and in four or five days I’m going to go to Missouri. In the meantime, I will not leave you here on this radio program.” These are just natural questions. I think any inquisitive reporter – I know the risk I’m running here by raising all this. But I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t do that.
WND has been reporting since before the election on questions – and lawsuits – raised over Obama’s birth and eligibility. He reported in his book he was born in Hawaii and his half-sister agrees. But the woman the president says is his paternal grandmother, Sarah Obama, claimed to have been present at her grandson’s birth in Mombasa, Kenya.

  15. SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) – California’s government risks a financial “meltdown” within 50 days in light of its weakening May revenues unless Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and lawmakers quickly plug a $24.3 billion budget gap, the state’s controller said on Wednesday.
Underscoring the severity of California’s cash crisis, Controller John Chiang, who has previously warned the state’s government risks running out of cash without a budget deal, said revenues in May fell by $1.14 billon, or 17.7 percent, from a year earlier.
Additionally, the revenues of the government of the most populous U.S. state fell short of estimates in Schwarzenegger’s budget plan by $827 million, Chiang said.
He warned California’s state government is speeding toward a financial disaster unless officials act urgently to balance its books.
“Without immediate solutions from the governor and legislature, we are less than 50 days away from a meltdown of state government,” Chiang said in a statement.

  17. (Via SWJ) Babatim (Tim Lynch), A Trip to Gardez and a Visit with the Marines
Gardez is the capitol of Paktya Province which is located in the southeast of Afghanistan. It is one of the provinces which border Pakistan, the terrain and vegetation is almost identical to the high deserts of the American west. Paktya looks similar to Marine Corps training base in 29 Palms California and exactly like the super large Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. Dugway should be the major training base for Afghanistan because it has the largest military impact and maneuver area in the country but it remains a testing command because the Army in general and the DoD civilians who run Dugway in particular lack vision, a sense of urgency, are afraid of change and are more concerned with guarding their little rice bowl than making a major contribution to the operation formally known as “The War on Terror.” Institutional stupidity is going to be a theme in this post – it is the institution; not the individuals which draws my ire as I digest what I have seen this week and I have seen more than my fair share of stupidity…

  18. I sent an e-mail to the G&M yesterday asking why they censor God from their stories. Two articles from the west. One where a guy notified a family their house was on fire he said ‘I’m not a hero I’m a Christian’ came out as I’m not a hero. The other more recent was a 78 year old that fought a bear off his son said ‘Thank God’ and the G&M quoted his son as saying ‘Thank whoever’ I am not a church goer or overly religious but I see a trend here and I asked the editor if there was an agenda going on. I also pointed out they did not seem to have a problem bashing religion as in PMSH and Sarah Palin. Still waiting for a reply.

  20. Bob and Penny,
I would like to share this special poem with you.
I have been through this as well, a couple of times. Jaz was a luck dog having you both for parents. My thoughts are with you.
    Lend Me A Pup
I will lend to you for awhile
    a puppy, God said,
For you to love him while he lives
and to mourn for him when he is gone.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe for two or three
But will you, till I call him back
take care of him for me?
He’ll bring his charms to gladden you
and (should his stay be brief)
    you’ll always have his memories
    as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise that he will stay,
    since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught below
I want this pup to learn.
I’ve looked the whole world over
    in search of teachers true
And from the folk that crowd life’s land
    I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love
    Nor think the labor vain
Nor hate me when I come to take my pup back again.
I fancied that I heard them say
“Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done,”
For all the joys this pup will bring,
the risk of grief you’ll run.
Will you shelter him with tenderness
Will you love him while you may
And for the happiness you’ll know forever grateful stay.
But should I call him back
    much sooner than you’ve planned
Please brave the bitter grief that comes
    and try to understand.
If, by your love, you’ve managed
    my wishes to achieve,
In memory of him that you’ve loved,
cherish every moment with your faithful bundle,
and know he loved you too.

  22. John et al, I’ve been closely following David Letterman’s descent into the abyss. As I’ve stated on my own blog, 25+ years ago I used to be a BIG fan of his. But nowadays, wow, what a moron.
What kind of MAN makes sex jokes about a 14 year old girl?!? And then when confronted with the error of his ways, he refuses to sincerely apologize.
May I suggest that he should donate $1 Million to a charity that focuses on helping young girls who have been sexually abused. It would be a start to show some actual compassion.

  23. Horny Toad, Jck Frosst, batb,EBD, MARYM – thank you so much for your kind words. As pet owners we know that some day we will have to say goodbye and it won’t be easy. Penny and I feel a little cheated on this one as our Jaz is about to have her fifth birthday.

  25. Bob & Penny
that is one of the toughest things that we dog lovers have to deal with.
We had the sad task a few yrs back we said no more as it is just to heartwrenching. So after a week we got a Yorkie Pup “Puddles” she is just something else, when outside She has to roll over to get her belly rubbed by every kid going by, or she loves to somehow get my dirty socks out of the hamper & then the game is on. Now we have an addition a friend was unable to look after her long hair Chijuawa(no spell check)”Molly”, she is just a little devil but we love her, she just loves to tease puddles and get her to chase her all over the place.
Anyways Bob & Penny i guess what iam trying to say is that our love is always in our memories for our pets, i hope you will always find love & compassion from other pets in the future.
    take care, all the best

  26. Roger Scruton, Beauty and Desecration
At any time between 1750 and 1930, if you had asked an educated person to describe the goal of poetry, art, or music, “beauty” would have been the answer. And if you had asked what the point of that was, you would have learned that beauty is a value, as important in its way as truth and goodness, and indeed hardly distinguishable from them. Philosophers of the Enlightenment saw beauty as a way in which lasting moral and spiritual values acquire sensuous form. And no Romantic painter, musician, or writer would have denied that beauty was the final purpose of his art.
At some time during the aftermath of modernism, beauty ceased to receive those tributes. Art increasingly aimed to disturb, subvert, or transgress moral certainties, and it was not beauty but originality—however achieved and at whatever moral cost—that won the prizes. Indeed, there arose a widespread suspicion of beauty as next in line to kitsch—something too sweet and inoffensive for the serious modern artist to pursue. In a seminal essay—“Avant-Garde and Kitsch,” published in Partisan Review in 1939—critic Clement Greenberg starkly contrasted the avant-garde of his day with the figurative painting that competed with it, dismissing the latter (not just Norman Rockwell, but greats like Edward Hopper) as derivative and without lasting significance. The avant-garde, for Greenberg, promoted the disturbing and the provocative over the soothing and the decorative, and that was why we should admire it…

“Wheat board says cold winter and spring taking toll on western grain farmer
WINNIPEG — Even for the hardiest Prairie farmer, 2009 is shaping up to be a big challenge.
Following a bitterly cold winter and a spring that refused to warm up, farmers are looking at reduced production and low yields for virtually every crop.
“I’ve been farming for over 40 years and … it was one of the longest and coldest springs that I can remember,” Chuck Fossay, who grows canola, flax and other crops near Starbuck, Man., said Thursday.
“We just managed to finish seeding on Sunday, so we’re about three weeks behind in seeding (and) the crop is very slow coming out of the ground ’cause of the cold weather.”
Fossay, whose land was hit by frost even in June, is not alone.
According to the Canadian Wheat Board’s annual crop outlook issued Thursday, producers across the Prairies will be producing smaller crops.”
