WASHINGTON (AP) - The president's new science adviser said Wednesday that global warming is so dire, the Obama administration is discussing radical technologies to cool Earth's air. John Holdren told The Associated Press in his first interview since being confirmed last month that the idea of geoengineering the climate is being discussed. One such extreme option includes shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun's rays. Holdren said such an experimental measure would only be used as a last resort.

If global warming was "so dire" why is it that the oceans are cooling, the artic ice sheet has pretty much recovered and not only has there been no increase in average temperature since 1998, but the evidence is pointing towards a decrease since 2002. I think the real deniers are on the enviromentalist side... their mantra surely is "what are you going to believe? what I tell you or your own lying eyes?"

They won't have to shoot "pollution particles" into the sky. With their current foreign policy approach, these nuts will screw up so badly that nukes will end up being used.

I think this is good news, because it will tend to prod lethargic political opposition to climate change into a more defined stance which can only be a good thing in the long run; also, it will tend to alarm the soft support for climate change politics that exists among those (and I think there are many out there) who cynically figure that climate change is just a way to get stronger environmental protection and perhaps speed up technological change ... when it becomes clear that the stakes are higher now, that some madman might gamble with the heat balance of the earth to see through their nightmare scenario, then possibly this boondoggle will fall apart under the stress of more and more criticism and defections from the cause.

Of course, the down side is, they just might be nuts enough to do this and as people are speculating here, it could very easily shift the climate into a glacial phase, the way the past two years have gone, it wouldn't take much.

We were in Beckley, West Virginia, Monday night coming home from Hilton Head and shoveled 3 inches of global warming off the car Tuesday morning in -3c temps. Snow on the ground and snow squalls all the way home. My buddy just phoned and said there were 4 foot drifts in Thornbury yesterday. Cold temps all the way into Florida Tuesday.
