Today's good news story comes to us from beyond the Arctic circle. Our friends from the Catlin Expedition haven't fallen through the ice yet;
When the three (Pen Hadow, Ann Daniels and Martin Hartley) leave messages on the TVM - a machine that records the messages they phone into London HQ - their voices often sound slurred and they occasionally muddle their words.
Sounds like heatstroke.

Something else bothers me: trailing zero deletion. Notice this data sequence:

37.19Notice how the zero is dropped from 37.2? Most data loggers don’t behave that way when logging data, but anyone familiar with a Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet knows of this behavior.
More - this appears to be the root data. I’ve loaded the http://dev.indigopapa.tv/clients/arctic/statsXML.php file and it appears to indeed be hard coded.

Heh. The Catlin site is edited to read - “Please note, we are disabling the biotelemetry data section of the website for several days. The units themselves are still functioning perfectly, but we need to address an issue with the above display. We hope to have resolved this problem in a matter of days.”
Then, edited again - (exerpt) "The first thing to note is that the data above is a representation of what the team have gone through on a particular day; it is not a live feed. As a project team, we explored the option of live transmissions, and this is certainly possible, using a combination of Bluetooth and Iridium technology. However, such a set-up is particularly power hungry, and given the power limitations imposed on the team (they have to carry all power supplies with them in their sledges), we opted instead to prioritise our power supply elsewhere. As such, biotelemetry data is still captured every five seconds, but it is not transmitted back to the UK in real time."

I was watching global news the other day (I don't know why either so don't ask) and I noticed that since the surface area of ice has regained its 1970's level, they've moved on to claiming there is less "old" ice than there was.
Apparently that newfangled ice they're making these days isn't built like it used to be...
They must think we're worse bowlers than the TOTUS. That's right folks, they think we're all retarded.
I'm sure any real scientist would treat their data with the utmost of suspicion.
Perhaps, since we are claiming the Arctic as Canadian territory, we should ask the PM to tell McKay to send in the Canadian Forces and arrest these trespassers for their own safety? If the team refuses to leave, we can give them Iggy and Jack as helpers in their pointless task?
How I've come to love them.
I think it was on the Franklin expedition that the explorers' teeth cracked apart from the cold. At least the dwindling food supplies of the Catlin Expedition are probably not contaminated with lead. That should keep the hallucinations down to manageable levels and perhaps even hold the cross-dressing at bay, unless they're into that sort of thing anyway, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Just because we are offered the opportunity to view the demise of fools in almost real time (not in reference to the bogus data from the website) does not make it necessary to feel any more sympathy for the volunteers(as opposed to victims) than if we we learning of Franklin for the first time after all these years.
Indeed the only sane response to idiocy like this is with the question ... "What is wrong with these people?" and the observation ... "Serves them right!"

Zero dropping annoys me to no end. One of my employees does it all the time, even on expense reports. I believe the concept of significant figures should be kind of important to someone who does statistics.
Javascript drops zeros.
Rather, most programming languages drop zeros by default. If the numbers are processed internally by the software as numbers rather than text, and the programmers are too lazy to specify the fixed number of decimal places, then the program will remove any digits it can without changing the precision of the number (trailing zeros).

The data is hardwired, and apparently has been from the get-go
The file resides on the server of the website provider (and developer) for the Catlin website. It was discovered by reverse engineering the calls made by the flash file that makes the nifty/blingy biometric web page heartbeats.
Use the date selector on that page and you'll find the same data being displayed no matter what date you choose.

Anthony, php is a scripting language. It would have dropped zeroes just like anything else. You can't claim to have found a "static XML file" having found the output of a php script. I don't doubt that the data is fake, but the lack of trailing zeroes doesn't add anything to the theory...
