The Weaker Sex

Every recessionary cloud has its silver lining - University of Guelph campus bulletin;

Following a marathon meeting, the University's Senate Tuesday night voted to ratify an earlier decision made by its Board of Undergraduate Studies (BUGS) to cancel the women's studies....

Except that ....

More than 40 courses offered by departments across campus concerning women's issues, gender, sexuality and diversity will continue to be offered.

Oh, well. It's a start.

The more dee-verse we are, dee-wurse it gets.

Look Kate we all know this blog would suck if you hadn't spent all those years hating the patriarchy in Women's studies.
;-)

Women's studies which in some small part are subsidized by those evil men who never get a Men's studies department.

"Womens' studies". Sounds silly. I mean, what is a woman? I already know. Duh. See, this is a man, this is a woman. Do we need to blow thousands of bucks and waste years of our lives just to be told that? I think it's silly.

The courses being offered are difficult to root out because the instructors giving them would then have to provide a NEW course. That takes time, effort and research to develop and not many professors are willing to do that!

I've seen courses in the humanities that are 'steady-state' for 30+ years. That's understandable in the classical languages, in ancient history, and in philosophy. But in the social sciences, where the women's studies courses are given - heh. It's laziness.

As long as they don't start canceling the other more practical degrees & courses such as Basket Weaving or Finger Painting, then it's ok.

The women's studies industry is huge and growing so while they may tinker with programs there isn't any way in God's green earth the industry will cut back or cancel anything.

Oh no! I feel a fainting spell coming on!
Just get rid of the damn studies. Why do we need more selfish upper-middle-class white chicks hating their dads and telling everyone else what to do?

This is a growth industry because credits are given for the courses and they don't take much work to get a passing grade. Or, how to get a degree without having to learn much. Got to keep those instructors employed, not to mention more trained people to complain to the grievance industries.

Sentinel: Don't you know? the construct of "Man" and "Woman" are stereotypes of the evil male colonialist patriarchy.

/SARCASM!

This is actually more encouraging than it sounds. For those of you not familiar with the Ontario post-secondary education landscape, the U of G is (was?) one of the most "politically active" campuses in Ontario, especially in the gender-conflict arena. U of G is where Gwen Jacobs came from. If the U of G is cutting out its "Womyn's" Studies programs, then it really is a death knell for that particular grievance industry.

Oh my. My niece is gonna throw a fit. Took women's studies AND urban landscaping. She was into it too. Even did the lez experiment, which I think was a pre-requisite. After years of not making a dime with her 60k education, she married a marxist civil servant. Ahhh, my niece.....one of Guelph's true success stories. A man hating anti-business David Suzuki worshipper. Top of the class.

more great recession news . . .

Ontario pension safety net can't catch auto workers: McGuinty

The Canadian Press

April 8, 2009 at 1:54 PM EDT

TORONTO — The safety net for Ontario's pension plan isn't large enough to cover auto workers should General Motors or Chrysler go bankrupt, Premier Dalton McGuinty warned Wednesday.

“The money available in that is very, very modest,” Mr. McGuinty said, noting the Pension Benefits Guarantee Fund has about $100-million in it – not nearly enough to cover the billions of dollars involved in the auto makers' pensions.

“That comes nowhere near meeting any liabilities – for example, for the auto sector alone, to say nothing of all the other sectors.”"

The CAW pension fund is in deeeeep doo-doo. With the Big 3 auto makers there is about $10 Billion shortfall. Add in about $3 billion for the Air Canada workers they have organized . . . you get the picture.

The CAW still thinks taxpayers are going to "make whole" their pension liabilities.

I'll go with that . . . right after the government "make whole" my RRSP.

Women's studies?

Isn't that what most boys do on dates?

Doesn't that belong in the biology department as an individual course?

women's studies......contra naturem...

eyewash....political eyewash.

as though a motley of obviously conflicted distaff soi-disantintellectuals could plumb the soul of Western Woman and reduce it to critical text....

Men haters the lot of them.....IMO(and i'm never wrong about this stuff) they're all either lesbians or heterosexual ball busters....which i suppose amounts to the same thing....

now get off my lawn.

True story ... a friend of mines sister went to U of G to become a health care provider, after one year of failing that course she switched to "Womens studies". After a few months she informed her family that she was born a lesbian and dumped her boyfriend of several years for a girlfriend ... after 5 more years in Womens studies she realized that she was born a man trapped in a womans body, after a total of 8 years at U of G some pills and an operation or two he graduated with a BS in Womens Studies. Now I am sure he is now very upset that Womens Studies was cancelled.

Opps... that wasn't 8 years of BS in Womens Studies but a BA in Womens studies.

no...you were correct...it WAS 8yrs of BS.

It doesn't matter how much they study them, no one understands women.

What that old joke about God, after having created the universe, rested. Then he created Eve and no one has rested since.

I don't know if I really want to know what Women want. best I figure to stay ignornat on that one if a man.
Anyway best way to get rid of these useless courses is to do an Ezra on them. De-normalize the studies by showing what a joke they are & how abnormal if not damaging.

Remember that tiff about 10 years ago between a female supreme court justice (Heurieux) and a Alberta superior court guy? It was over whether a woman's past is relevant in cases of rape. Anyway, the fact that the tiff was public was extraordinary.

I was studying at SMU in Halifax at the time as a mature student. Sitting in the 'mature student' lounge one lunch hour, I quoted out loud, but to no one in particular, Ed Greenspan in the Globe saying something about how the SC had been hijacked by feminists. A middle aged woman studying Women's Studies and International Development tore into me for offending her, literally screaming how the patriarchy had kept women down for so long, etc. I told her to relax; it was Ed talking, not me.

I guess SMU still has Women's Studies. Sigh.

More than 40 courses offered by departments across campus concerning women's issues, gender, sexuality and diversity will continue to be offered.

Translation: we aren't quite ready to cut the tuition flow from vulnerable naive undergrads yet and we really don't have adults here that can counsel incoming freshman on the folly of lame degree choices and the lefty thought police would want a piece of us, so we will to continue to pretend we educated you if you pretend you are educated and pay the tuition.

Here's hoping that this mother-of-all-recessions with its horrific unemployment curve will totally unmasks this lefty academic charade. Maybe not, stupidity can outlast capital.

This whole "womens' studies" thing sounds like a whole lot of politically correct feminazi brainwashing nonsense designed to turn students into ultra-extreme leftist freaks, I gather from what some folks said above...

I think that, perhaps, the idea of "womens' studies" was invented by the KGB as another of its many weapons of social corruption against the West... After all, as I've come to understand, much of the so-called "progressive" nonsense stuff our society suffers from today originated from Communist tacticians figuring out whatever ways they could to corrupt, make decadent and bizarre and screw up the Western World, thus weakening it. And the useful idiots of the Western World guillibly listened to the charming, manipulative, slick KGB spies, infiltrators and propagandists, going forth and spreading the BS, eventually getting much of it implemented...

I wonder, further, if leftists would recommend that Muslim students take "womens' studies" courses... Oh, they wouldn't dare!

Seems reasonable! Cut out the worthless and unnecessary crap and get back to basics.

I do have one fear. The people that would go into Womens Studies will now go into Law and become judges.

big debate in Calgary now ,

are we allowed to breastfeed our horrid spawn in the middle of the pool? apparently you are. its natural.

not that I would, but the natural tendency of a male .species wide , is to maximize the spread of your DNA .

well, need I say more, Im just not prepared to approve the next "natural" body function.

the other 'restrained' body function is to get sick in your own mouth. unpurse those lips and go natural.

Speedy said "I do have one fear. The people that would go into Womens Studies will now go into Law and become judges."

Unfortunately a lot of them end up working for Human Resources departments in hospitals, school boards, cities, Federal and Provincial governments etc.

A lot of the recently unemployed auto workers and steel workers are about to meet them. They aren't going to like them.

CAL2...
why don't we do it in the road...

My sister took one of those women studies courses, she told me they taught that even if you are married/consented that sex was still rape with a male and that you were not really a feminist if you were not also a lesbian.

This was at the University of Winnipeg.

I am surprised they find it difficult to attract to their study considering the viewpoint...

why dont we do it on the road
why dont we do it on the road
why dont we do it on the rroooooaaad
no one will be watching , why dont we do it on the road.

up an octave

why dont we do it on the road
why dont we do it on the road
why dont we do it on the rroooooaaad
no one will be watching , why dont we do it on the road.

1969?

because that would be onanism?

The chickens are coming home to roost ...

The alleged "underfunding" of education, health care, infrastructure etc., is typical of economies with far too much parasitical government that gets in the way of the production of useful goods and services.

We need to streamline the tax system (especially corporate) and remove all "incentives" other than making a profit; stop all government funding of "activist groups"; abolish government subsidies to business; get rid of most regulations that do not involve objective rules of business conduct and ethics, some environmental protection, or safety. For starters.

Oh, and forget the "stimulus". The only thing government should do is get out of the way of citizens voluntarily trading goods and services for mutual benefit. That will enable the readjustment to take place as quickly as possible.

So - help me out here. Who develops these courses? Are they men who amazingly have figured out what women are all about and want to teach the world or are they women who think they know all about themselves and want to teach the world? How would such a course advance modern civilization? Would it reduce the divorce rate? Would it reduce the number of marriages?

Would a degree in Women's Studies make you employable? Who would hire you? A spa? A beauty salon? You'd probably need more training is in beauty school or something. Sounds to me like an education in Women's studies would be roughly equal to a degree is sociology.

What about developing some university courses on the study of men? Can't you just see it - today we will study why men love the sound of their body function noises (I've got a buddy who can belch out the word "rhinocerous") and the smell of their own farts.

Another chapter could deal with "Making men happier by having government subsidies for beer, a 50" plasma and a sports channel subscription."

Ya, a course on men's studies would be about 20 minutes long. And it would make you just as employable as you would be with a four-year degree in women's studies.

Reminds me of a story going back some time ago. My sister in law, an RCMP officer, told me a story; she was in a bar checking ID for underage drinkers; a rough looking motorcycle dude type promptly stood up, unzipped his trousers and exclaimed, "see, I'm a boy"; to which she promptly said "I see that", and arrested him.

Women's studies should be called 'Anti-Woman' studies because they set feminism back a hundred years? Why? Because they teach that women are hapless victims who have no control over their lives but instead are helpless little creatures who need government to take care of them and make decisions for them.
Once upon a time, a long time ago, I called myself a feminist when feminism meant that women were equal to men under the law, had the same rights, duties and obligations as men, and should have the same opportunities as men without preferential treatment. I stopped calling myself a feminist when I saw the direction it was going, including setting up these idiotic 'Women's Studies'.

Women studies...run away. A former girlfriend of mine attended Mount St.Vincent University in Halifax, which was probably one of the pioneers of Women Studies here in Canada. Needless to say, after about 3 or 4 months at that place even she started to become brainwashed. I remember seeing a poster about STDs at the entrance of the dormitory. The poster pictured an attractive man and the message underneath read "He may be good looking but he has an STD". Imagine the same poster with a woman and imagine the outcry that would ensue.

I think we have to start taking back our educational institutions--from elementary schools right up to universities. How do we do this? There are a lot of smart people out there--let's put our heads together and come up with plans on how to do this. Our future literally depends on it.

~~favill~~

I realize its off topic , but to Cal2 ... I find that topic really funny. So it's not ok to smoke near your child due to health risks of second hand smoke , but breast feed your child in chlorine water where people urinate and yes even deficate is alright???

I wonder if they at least are teaching young muslim women to be independent and functional within our society?

Barbara -- yes!

I love being a woman; I really do. I think more women should love being women and work to make sure that our gender strives to be the best it can be and is allowed to do so.

However, where in all of that is the clause that to love yourself, you have to hate the opposite? Can you even truly love yourself while hating the opposite? I don't think it's possible, and the current batch of "feminists" are a bunch of self loathing flagellants projecting their own feelings of pain and grief into a hatred and vendetta against men -- I fear for the male young in our midst, the poor boy babies that will have to face these death and destruction harpies.

And I'm saddened that my own glorious and wonderful gender has allowed itself to be played upon in such a way.

[not that I understand you men at all -- God love (most) of ya, but sometimes you do/think some wierd schiesse as far as I'm concerned (the fart thing is one of them), but you do have your good qualities and some mighty powerful charms, make the world a less boring place, and most seem willing to put up with me and my sisters, so as a gender, I'd vote to keep ya -- appreciate you even (maybe not the fart obsession though)]
