To my knowledge, ahmandinejad's speech of today didn't call for Israel to be 'wiped off the map'; it was a speech equating Zionism with racism. That's a matter of opinion not truth.

One has to ask the question - does a state that is founded on one religious ideology, and which wants its population to function, as a majority, in that ideology, include a function of racism? After all, the Islamic states share the same agenda. And so do the Western states with their basic Judeo-Christian principles.

When or how does racism emerge within such a premise?

Second, a key agenda of this second conference is the elevation of Islam to a worldwide dogma, where any and all criticism of Islam, Sharia Law, Mohammed and any other facets of Islam, would be outlawed. All over the world. That is, the agenda is to functionally remove any capacity of Islam to modernize, because any analysis, any questions, any debate about its axioms - would be 'verboten'. That's quite the agenda. And I suggest, that's the main agenda.

Kate.. on the point of Iran and the hypocricy of the UN, I am embrassed to note that I just today became aware of Iranian-Canadian blogger Hossein Derakhshan, who was arrested in Iran on November 1, 2008 and has been held since, without charge - who ironically enough, was an occasional advocate of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but, gasp, criticized fundamentalist Muslim leaders and "wrote about" the "Pure Imams" of Islam.

Think about that for a moment. Derakhshan is a Canadian citizen. He has never been accused of any crimes, certainly, hasn't allegedly murdered a U.S. medic like Omar Khadr, and yet, the coalition of the stupid and their running-dog lacky, Irwin Cotler, haven't raised an eyebrow over Derakhashan's detention. Well, yes, it's true, he isn't being detained by Americans - and well, yes, he hasn't been accused of being an extremist Muslim terrorist, and, in fact, has tried to bridge differences between Iran and Israel - so I can see why Ignatieff, Layton, Duceppe, and their trained puppy, Irwin Cotler, haven't been raising a stink. I mean - if they stand up for Derakhshan, well, they sort of have to stand up for Mark Stein and Ezra Levant - who also critized Muslim fundamentalism. And we can't have that, can we?

I think bloggers of all political stripes should be making more of this - apparently, Derakhshan is known as the "blogfather" of Iranian blogs - he travelled to Israel and returned to Iran to communicate between both countries the desire of moderates from each side to find peaceful means of coexistence.

A quick google and you will find hundreds of results. However its been badly misinterpretted by the west in my opinion. I have no love for Iran or Ahmadinejad, but his actual words were that he wanted Zionism eliminated from this world. He was speaking directly about agressive, militant, Zionism, and how its legacy has caused so many problems for the Middle East (I'm not saying I'm for or against Zionism, but it has undoubtedly upset that region of the world for the last half century).

I don't doubt that Ahmadinejad is a racist anti-semitic, but for whatever reason people seem to believe that that makes it ok for them to mis-quote him and nullify all of his statements (i.e. saying that militant Zionism is a bad thing).

The only system that works, I think, in large populations that enables progress and also societal justice, is capitalism as an economic mode and democracy as a political mode,defined by a Constitution and a legislated (not religiously ordained) Rule of Law. Religion is moved to the private realm.

As for the land, it remains, in my view, a political domain and subject to legislation; it can't be offered or taken by 'god'. Or even history.

My understanding of Zionism is that it was and is a movement devoted to returning people of one particular religion, Judaism, to the assumed land of its ancestry.

It cannot be 'bereft of religion' if it pertains to one, and only one, religious group. Judaism is, after all, not a 'race', nor is it an ethnicity, nor is it a culture.

Zionism, again, to my understanding, was a movement that began in the non-orthodox population of the Judaic religious peoples in Europe. This does NOT mean 'secular' in the sense of atheist, in the sense of defining oneself as NOT a Jew; it means only - non-orthodox. A secular Jew remains a Jew, not an atheist.

I'm sure you know that there are orthodox Jews who are against the existence of Israel, who strongly, pointing to their religious texts, oppose taking over 'the Holy Land' by force, (King Solomon's Three Oaths)and who somehow leave it up to god to take them out of exile.
