[The following paragraph is designed to be heard in the style of Gilbert Gottfried.]
I'm not a bouncer at this club, Kevin, I'm just a DJ who sometimes cracks wise between sets. Why not ask me if I'm ambivalent? That one's easy: yes and no. Seriously, I like cats too. Let's exchange recipes. Wait, wait, not again, you know, one of the problems with being a DJ is these groupies. Look, I'm not your type, honey, I'm not inflatable. If I throw a stick, will you leave? Does your train of thought have a caboose? All right, all right, enough with the wisecracks, we now return to your regularly scheduled Reader Tips.
Ummm, Vitruvius - are you, like, insulting Kevin? And if you are, why? Maybe I'm just dense tonight, and I've never really been able to truly appreciate Gilbert Gottfried, which I'm sure is my loss, but I don't get it.
Yes, yes, good critique Exetaz, the problem is my weak segue right there at the end of the first sentence of my second paragraph. I am sorry about that, Kevin, everything after the first sentence of the second paragraph is intended to be gratuitous humour, not any comment about you or your comments. I should have formatted my comment like this:
Sorry about that.An earlier posting had a quote by Mark Steyn, while he was guest hosting Rush Limbaugh's show. I just finished listening to the Podcast and there was an even funnier line. Let me paraphrase:
Sudan is a very strange country. On the one hand many people there use modern technology like cel phones. On the other hand, a while back a rumour spread like wildfire amongst the population that if a Sudanese man shook the hand of a foreigner then within days the man's private parts would shrivel up and fall off.
Now I have a lot of sympathy for these men of Sudan because I pretty much had the same experience when I shook Hillary Clinton's hand.

About a week ago at transmontanus.blogspot.com, Canadian blogger Terry Glavin took issue with an article by Christopher Hitchens about the barring of George Galloway; essentially, Glavin felt that our national media had sensationalized the story to the detriment or exclusion of facts and that Hitchens, who'd written that the barring of Galloway was evidence of "the risk of giving the power of censorship to any official," had in effect been misled by his use of Canadian media sources. The amicably curmudgeonly Hitchens responded by tacking this statement onto a following unrelated column at Slate:
"Update: In my last column, it seems I may have done an injustice to the government and people of Canada in the matter of George Galloway's canceled visit to the country. For elucidation, please consult the following blog post." In the post Hitchens refers to --
http://transmontanus.blogspot.com/2009/03/christopher-hitchens-is-wrong.html
Glavin had written,
To be clear: Despite what all Galloway's friends will tell you, Immigration Minister Jason Kenney did not ban George Galloway from speaking in Canada, or from not speaking in Canada, and neither did any Canadian official do anything of the kind, either. It did not happen. It did not occur. And it won't do to say, well, yes, but however you put it, the whole thing has only only served to draw more attention to Galloway and his "odious opinions." Something has given Galloway the attention he craves, to be sure. But he hasn't been given anything like the attention he properly deserves, and as for why this is so, well, that is a very good question. It is one of the more important questions raised by this whole affair, so I'll take a shot at answering it.
The bigger story in which l'affaire Galloway is a kind of defining moment involves a phenomenon that is playing out on the same tectonic scale as the emergence of a distinctly Canadian democratic socialism in the 1930s, the Quiet Revolution in Quebec in the 1960s, and the rise of libertarian prairie populism in the 1990s. As is often the case in such upheavals, journalists are the last to notice.
Something wholly new is emerging in Canada, in all the spaces where the Left used to be, in its activist constituencies, its traditional institutions, and its lexicon. Whatever name you want to give the thing, its noticeable features include a betrayal of progressive internationalism, a pathetic weakness for conspiracy theories, and a routine apologetics for antisemitism and terror. Its outlook is generally parochial, but its global engagements tend to align with fascism’s contemporary Islamist variants, even to the point of objective support for the Taliban.
To read most Canadian newspapers, you probably wouldn't have a clue that any of this was going on.
I think Hitchens' mea culpa is commendable, a good addition to public discourse which bears notice.
Here's a final excerpt from transmontanus' piece which perhaps best sums up the piece's convincing counter-argument to the whole "we're-just-making-Galloway-more-famous-by-banning-him" take on it:
When Galloway visited Ottawa two years ago, he was every bit as famous as he is now. He was the guest of honour at a publicly-advertised 74th birthday party for the Syrian Social Nationalist Party. The SSNP is an unambiguously fascist movement with shiny boots and uniforms, its own distinctive swastika, and an anthem sung to the tune of Deutschland, Deutschland, Uber Alles.
Not one Canadian news organization reported Galloway’s Ottawa visit.

Never did like that song "Like a Rolling Stone". I thought it was showed hatred for the rich and for women:
Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
And nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street
And now you find out you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all come down and did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts and things
But you'd better lift your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home

Listening to Adam Atlas the incoming president of the soon-to-be-renamed Canadian Jewish Congress (Quebec Region). Not only was he trying to explain why the pandering to Quebec nationalists of a name change to Quebec Jewish Congress was necessary, he also said that at the present time the Quebec Jewish Congress had no position on whether or not Quebec should separate from Canada.
Putting aside this specific case of going overboard to appease the few Jews in Quebec who are separatist and the government bodies with which the 'Quebec Jewish Congress' would interact, the whole interview with Tommy Schnurmacher on Montreal's CJAD radio station depressed me to no end.
This is just another example of the spinelessness of our politicians, judges, leaders in general. Where did this disease come from? As Tommy said, if you want respect, you have to respect yourself.
Even the leader of the free world is now apologizing for the existence of the United States.
As another example the YMCA here in Quebec changed their name to dump the Christian part so as to be more inclusive. Nobody said boo, even though the name YMCA is known around the world and has a lot of history attached to it.
Where is the vaccine to stop the spread of this spinelessness?

"EDITORIAL: Barack takes a bow. The president shows fealty to a Muslim king
In a shocking display of fealty to a foreign potentate, President Obama bowed to Saudi King Abdullah at the Group of 20 summit in London last week.
Mr. Obama later said in Strasbourg, France, "We have to change our behavior in showing the Muslim world greater respect." Symbolism is important in world affairs. By bending over to show greater respect to Islam, the U.S. president belittled the power and independence of the United States.
The bow was an extraordinary protocol violation. Such an act is a traditional obeisance befitting a king's subjects, not his peer. There is no precedent for U.S. presidents bowing to Saudi or any other royals. Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt shook hands with Saudi King Abdulaziz in February 1945. Granted, Mr. Roosevelt was wheelchair-bound, but former President Dwight D. Eisenhower shook hands when he first met King Saud in January 1957. Mr. Obama's bow to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques does not help his image with those who believe he is secretly a Muslim, and why he chose to bow only to the Saudi King and not to any other royals remains unexplained.
No Americans of any station are required to bow to royalty. It is one of the pillars of American exceptionalism that our country rejected traditional caste divisions."

"Catlin Crew Officially Has Hypothermia (and Frostbite)
From the Catlin web site today -
Hypothermia Posted by Gaby Dean
Monday, 06 Apr 2009 15:58
In disadvantaged inner cities it’s known in medical circles as Urban Hypothermia. GPs adopted the term after seeing an increase, during winter, of elderly patients who have switched off their heating, fearful of the cost, and become ill as a result because of the cold.
Chronic, as opposed to acute, hypothermia is the official term.
The Catlin Arctic Survey Team have now been working in temperatures of below -40 degrees centigrade for more than 30 days. When the three (Pen Hadow, Ann Daniels and Martin Hartley) leave messages on the TVM - a machine that records the messages they phone into London HQ - their voices often sound slurred and they occasionally muddle their words.
Extreme cold affects the senses and everyday skills we usually take for granted, like speaking. According to CAS medical adviser Doc Martin, the team are constantly battling chronic hypothermia, which was to be expected. (Pen Hadow has described it as an ‘occupational hazard’).
“Chronic hypothermia affects people who are under-nourished, physically and mentally tired and not sleeping well”, says Doc. “You can see the connection between vulnerable elderly people and the physical and mental condition that Pen, Ann and Martin are in”."
"Perhaps they are preparing to come home? They are 15 km further from the pole today (722.28 km) than they were yesterday (707.83 km) and according to satellite data, temperatures have been running below normal for the last two and a half months.
And from the NSIDC web site today - It was a warm winter in the Arctic. No doubt the Catlin crew will be relieved to hear that."

RCMP, a once proud and glamorous institution (nee 19th century), is an armed militia, deeply politicized and deeply corrupted.
From the murder of Robert Dziekanski, to the bungling of the APEC security, the 'investigation' of Shawingigate, the raid on Juliette O'Neil's underwear drawer, the bumbled and politicized Airbus investigation, and beyond the use of state force against a civilian (François Beaudoin).
The list could go on, but honestly, unionization of the force doesn't really matters.
If anything, the stock antagonism between management and members may reduce politician's use of the force. And drop productivity 30%.
RCMP softened Taser-use restrictions
In response to national anger at the death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski in the Vancouver airport, the RCMP was urged to curb multiple Taser use by its officers — but instead deleted an existing restriction from its stun-gun policy.
CBC News has learned that on Feb. 3, 2009, two sentences were erased from the main document that guides officers' actions — the first limiting Taser usage to one shot and no more than 20 seconds at a time, and the second requiring officers to warn suspects before deploying a stun gun.

No income, no trust
By BRENT FULLARD, GUEST COLUMNIST
Lie. Conceal. Fabricate. That was the theme our association used in billboards across the country in the aftermath of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's broken income trust promise.
You would think someone as litigious as Harper would have sued our association for libel. Especially for the full page newspaper ads we ran under the headline of: "Jim Flaherty, your tax leakage analysis is fraudulent."
The reason these public statements did not invite a libel lawsuit is because the best defence against claims of libel is the statements being made are true.
After all, Harper did lie, conceal and fabricate when he broke his election promise to "never" tax income trusts, with his demonstrable lie that income trusts cause tax leakage.
An argument he fabricated by leaving out all of the taxes that are paid to Ottawa by the 38% of income trusts held in RRSPs, and concealed within his 18 pages of blacked out "proof."
Meanwhile our claim that Jim Flaherty's tax leakage analysis is fraudulent is derived from the definition of fraud, which is "an intentional deception made for personal gain or which causes damage to another."
Based on this definition, Flaherty's income trust tax is a fraud since it was based on the intentional deception of his fabricated tax leakage claims, and the policy resulted in Canadians permanently losing $35 billion of their hard-earned retirement savings.
Scandals
These events have enormous relevance to today and the financial scandals that have been perpetrated on an unsuspecting public by the likes of the AIGs, Bernie Madoffs, and Bear Stearns of this world.
The income trust tax and the enormous havoc it created in Canadians' retirement savings, and the massive number of takeovers that ensued (worth $108 billion), mostly by foreigners such as Hong Kong billionaires and middle eastern oil companies, is the real scandal Canadians should make themselves aware of.
Unlike the present day financial meltdown Harper assured us during the last election "would have happened by now" if it was going to happen at all, or the raging debate over how much Harper is responsible for the financial calamity all around us, the damage caused by the income trust tax is something that is the sole consequence of a decision Harper made.
Today's financial meltdown has, no doubt, sensitized a larger number of Canadians about what it actually means to lose half of your retirement savings or to lose the very basis for one's retirement income.
The trust takeovers to date by foreigners have caused Ottawa and all taxpayers to lose more than $1 billion in annual tax revenue, a number that will soon climb to $7.5 billion. And for what? The privilege of having foreigners own more of Canada and the privilege of imposing enormous losses on Canadians saving for retirement?
Unlike today's other financial meltdown, this is an outcome Harper owns, lock, stock and barrel, based on his policy of lie, conceal, fabricate.
Since the car companies are just topping up their pension plans with taxpayer cash, the suppliers might not have had the cash flow to stay along for the ride. Until now....
OTTAWA, April 7 (Reuters) - Canada's industry minister said on Tuesday the government would increase the amount of cash available to Export Development Canada to insure receivables to auto parts suppliers by C$700 million ($569 million) to a total C$1.25 billion.
Industry Minister Tony Clement also said on Tuesday the government would guarantee warranties on new vehicles by Chrysler [CBS.UL] and General Motors Corp until "the period of uncertainty" in the auto sector ends.
"It will help consumers know that they have confidence when they buy a vehicle from GM and Chrysler during this uncertain period, that their warranty ... will be there for them," Clement told reporters."
Since the next announcement will be for the auto dealers themselves, it won't be long until the direct purchase subsidies will begin.
The public has no idea how large a commitment of taxpayer money has been made to preserve a relatively small portion of our economy.

"Fear
To hear liberal mouthpieces in and out of the administration tell it, a sweet rationality guides the minds of those who agree with Barack Obama’s economic policies, not an emotion so debilitating it prevents even the acknowledgment of their consequences.
Fortunately, a great many Americans recognize such drivel for what it is: propaganda spewed by wolfish shills whose job is to quash the notion that much public opinion is being driven by an understandable, transient fear that the president and his liberal allies in Congress are happily (actually, ecstatically) taking advantage of.
Those wolves, by the way, come dressed in all manner of sheep’s clothing, a fact exemplified by White House Budget Director Peter Orszag, who, sporting a suit, tie, and two glittering diplomas, answered a reporter’s question about how the administration can speak of “fiscal rsponsibility” when it is creating a “spiraling debt” with this low-down, pusillanimous lie: “I don’t know what spiraling debt you’re referring to.”
But to return to the point at hand, those of us who are actually trying to be reasonable about the president’s proposals are accumulating plenty of evidence to support the notion that fear has frozen millions of minds.
How?
Simple. We listen carefully, finding that almost invariably, expressions of concern about the consequences of the president’s policies elicit responses that are nothing short of astonishing in their intellectual deficiencies.
Common among those responses is “He [Obama] has got to try something,” an embarrassingly vacuous utterance that allows us to immediately draw two conclusions:
1) It can’t claim even a distant relationship with any rational idea.
2) It does, however, shout its sister and brotherhood to the kind of childish irrationality that responds to a “why” with an implacably resolute, perfectly smug “because.”"

Our intelligence has already uncoverd the depth of Pakistani trust through the treachery of the ISI.
We need to encourage India, if need be through an operation similar to the forgery by British agent Ivar Bryce,of a fake South American map outlining what Hitler’s plans were for that continent. Bryce worked for William Stephenson (who Ian Fleming model Bond, James Bond after) who had been given the mission: Provoke America to go to war with Germany. Well we need to provoke India to take out Pakistan.
The map aided FDR in his attempt to get us engaged in the war but did not have full effect until 12/7/1941. It did mute for a considerable time the anti war American Firsters, a Pro German movement.
Pakistan is another rogue nation and must be dealt with with a gun at it’s head, not a sugar bowl of weaponry and money…all to go unaccounted for. Sign the contract Pakistan, or else."

"Report confirms terror dry run
Flight 327 Update. Will all those who ridiculed Annie Jacobsen for "hysteria" over "musicians," and derided her for "racism," now apologize? What do you think?
And what about those who think the Flying Imams case is a legitimate one of racist profiling? Will they now acknowledge that there is a genuine threat to American air travel? Again, what do you think?
And why has DHS covered up all these probes and dry runs? Are they more concerned about a fictional "backlash" against Muslims than about preventing another jihad terror attack? Do they think that keeping the public ignorant, fat, and happy will help prevent another jihad terror attack? This goes hand-in-hand with the polite fictions about Islam and jihad that dominate the public discourse -- it's as if in both cases that the truth is just too terrifying to contemplate, and so we'd rather play pretend.
Well, if we wish to survive, maybe it's time to grow up."

The last rant: Failing papers ‘bring me joy’ (Dinosaur Media DeathWatch™)
The more the problems of the media mount, the more that newspaper-bashing comments are flowing to this blog. As of today, the media bashers can save themselves the trouble, because I will reject them, one and all.
Before I turn off the spigot, I want to share the mother of all anti-MSM rants to illustrate the virulent hostility that many feel toward the press. Journalists and publishers ought to know what they are up against. After taking note, they should move on to more constructive pursuits.
The following 1,181-word broadside scourges journalists, publishers and even journalism educators, whose ranks I joined earlier this year as a member of the adjunct faculty at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California at Berkeley.
Like the authors of most such efforts, the writer is anonymous. (UPDATE: The ever-vigilant Mark Potts notes that, unbeknownst to me until now, a similar version of this post appeared at AngryJournalist.Com.) And now, here’s the last anti-media rant you’ll see on this blog:

Flashback:
"Assignment in Utopia
[By Eugene Lyons. Published in 1937 (New York) by Harcourt Brace]
XV
The Press Corps Conceals a Famine
“THERE is no actual starvation or deaths from starvation but there is widespread mortality from diseases due to malnutrition.”
This amazing sophistry, culled from a New York Times Moscow dispatch on March 30, 1933, has become among foreign reporters the classic example of journalistic understatement. It characterizes sufficiently the whole shabby episode of our failure to report honestly the gruesome Russian famine of 1932-33.
The circumstance that the government barred us from the afflicted regions may serve as our formal excuse. But a deaf-and-dumb reporter hermetically sealed in a hotel room could not have escaped knowledge of the essential facts. Reporting, as we did daily, industrial victories in the Baikal region or Tajikistan without personal investigation, we had small warrant for withholding and minimizing and diluting the famine story because we were prohibited to make personal investigation. Whatever doubts as to the magnitude of the disaster may have lingered in our minds, the prohibition itself should have set at rest.
The episode, indeed, reflects little glory on world journalism as a whole."
