Well, it didn't take long. Tonight, on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart spent most of his time mocking Obama and his team. He noted that Director of Homeland Security Nancy Capitulano no longer refers to "terrorist acts", but "man-made disasters", that his press secretary, and his director of the Office of Management and Budget, now refer to "war spending" as "overseas contingency spending", and of course, the 30-day limit on Chrysler as "an opportunity to restructure" and not "a death sentence". Then he brought in John Oliver to explain the "linguistics" of the Obama administration. Noting that America had to calm down, he told Stewart that by "rebranding" events, Obama could allay Americans' fears. For example, he noted that the North Dakota floods will now be rebranded as "semi-voluntary land baptism", and wildfires will be called "enhanced wildlife oxidation".

It only took a few months, and even a dedicated lefty like Stewart is turning on Bambam.

Didn't see the segments. Stewart turning on Obama? I don't buy it. Probably something ironic, facetious even, loaded with sarcasm. Stewart never really attacks liberals in any serious way... he tries to pretend he does at times when he's under fire for not being objective, even though he doesn't have to be. Nevertheless, he's a shill for all things liberal. If goes down the road of moderating his opinions, probably because he has his sights set on politics. Obama, Franken, et al, different culture in the US.... Stewart has a big ego, congressman doesn't seem enough for him.... probably wait for a senate run.

Sorry Vit, I've been slacking lately in posting. Do I have to turn in my official knuckledragger membership card?

Amazing work with stats.

My family teases me about time spent on the 'net. I can tell them I'm down from last quarter.

Great news about the upcoming wedding Kate.
When were you going to tell the rest of the gang?

Now I know why hans puts all of that bio stuff at the end of each post.

Stewart is as dennis miller has said - a comedian first and a left of centre type second. Obamaisms are gold for guys like Stewart.

And don't discount the damage that semantics can inflict on a politician. "collateral damage" "body count" "sexual relations" "is" etc etc the more one tries to jargon ones way out of trouble - in this case admitting that GWB was right (they have dropped the term "nation-building" when explaning the afstan effort BTW).

Jon,

He didn't go after Obama directly - he just made fun of a number of members of his team. He let Oliver go after the Prez, who made all the "rebranding statements" (there were about five; I can't remember them all.) I wouldn't say it was facetious or ironic; more a lampoon, I'd say. But the point was clear - Bambam's admin is dedicated to changing the names and terms, which is tactic of shifty pols from as long as I can remember. I still remember Ron Ziegler telling people Nixon's statements were "no longer operative", and I was only 16 at the time.

Unconfirmed ISS Toilet-related comments from elsewhere:

Commenter 1: "If you even read the whole summary, you'd note that the Russians began it by charging to use "their" resources. U.S. astronauts can't use Russian facilities either without incurring a hefty bill. Both sides are being petty children."

Commenter 2: "No, this one is on the Russians. They started it. The Americans are just playing tit-for-tat (with random forgiveness, we presume), which is always an appropriate moral strategy."

"This is not the first time the Russians, bankrupt, have pulled a stunt like this. Mir was full of junk because the Russians would lease space to whoever to run an experiment and would then refuse to bring the experiment's materials back to Earth. They kept them on board in order to continue charging the (exorbitant) rent for space aboard Mir. The cosmonauts complained about the piles of junk, though not publicly."

Kevin,

I didn't see the episode but I just checked the calendar. It's nearly April 1st here in Vancouver and could have already been April 1st when you wrote that.

You're just foolin' us kidz with an April Fools Joke, no?!?

Thanks Vitruvius - but nobody would beat Bugs singing this song in "Wet Hare" 1962

Over at the National Post there is a story that starts withe "Body Count Triples". Oh my,what possible disaster has happened???---http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=1448519--- . WTF,this is not news, this is pandering to the porridge brains. To put a little perspective onto this story,a couple of friends and I are as evil as any oil giant, and that is not counting the ones that the dogs couldn't retrieve.

wallyj, it is sad, but duck life has now become morally equivalent with human life.

How about this stat?

Overheard on Levin the other day; Jon Stewart was born Jonathon Stuart Leibowitz in NYC. According to Wiki he legally changed his name in 2001. I don't find his humour funny, his sarcasm witty or his show interesting.

On a different note, I bought an interesting book back in the late '90's entitled "The Creature from Jekyll Island" by G.E. Griffin. It's a disparaging view of the Federal Reserve System. Dry reading you may think. Lately, I have been re-reading my heavily annotated copy and it is chilling how a decade ago he accurately predicted the current deflationary spiral.

(Via CSP) Daniel McGroarty, New Business For G-20 Meeting: Russia's Strategic Resource Grab

With such a crowded plate, one issue that may not make the cut could well prove to have critical consequences for global economic development and geopolitics: Russia's resource war.

Call the scramble to control key strategic resources a case of asymmetrical warfare: Russia plays by commercial enterprise rules in free-market nations to advance its strategic interests, while imposing strict limits on foreign investment in its own resource sector. The result: A "heads I win, tails you lose" policy that allows Russia the best of both worlds as it amasses a global portfolio of resource assets...

"A Cooling Trend Toward Global Warming
Written by Ed Hiserodt

Over the past several years, it appeared that our society was doomed to succumb to what Weather Channel founder John Coleman has described as "the greatest scam in history": anthropogenic (human-caused) global warming (AGW). For two decades there has been an incessant drumbeat of propaganda attributing every weather-related event to an increase in carbon dioxide caused by the burning of fossil fuels. With the election of a president who is solidly in the global-warming-alarmist camp — and with many high-level appointees who are bona fide climate-change alarmists — coupled with a Democratic legislature anxious to please their environmentalist and media benefactors, the passage of legislation causing some form of economy-crippling energy taxation seemed to be a foregone conclusion.

But then came the unexpected: a recession brought on and exacerbated by the heavy hand of government, and a second consecutive severe winter. Indeed, we may look back and see that our current financial crisis and Mother Nature were the saviors of free-market capitalism. They may have slowed the statist steamroller long enough for the proponents of climate realism to make such socialistic schemes as "cap and trade" understood for what they are and what they are not. They are not about anything to do with global warming or climate change. They are instead a massive transfer of wealth from the productive to those who will not adopt free markets.

While the primary promoters of the warming hoax have not "broken and run" yet, there is much evidence that there is an increasing tide of defectors and that climate catastrophists have completely run out of dry powder.

"The Town of Smithers decided to stop the clock on Earth Hour this year.

In a Committee of the Whole session last week, councillors were divided over a proposal to endorse a one-hour power cut off on the weekend. The motion was narrowly defeated.

One of the main sticking points in the proposal was the reference to global warming, two words that ruffled the feathers of a few councillors. Council was also required to sign up to the animal-activist group World Wildlife Fund’s website.

Observing Earth Hour wasn’t itself especially controversial. But councillors balked at registering with the WWF."

The more you look at this country's numbers, the more you understand why Gordon Brown relegated Canada to "second tier" status in the diplomatic preparations for the Summit. It was the only bit of one-upmanship with the Canadians he could still win.

Next time the prime minister talks about every country being brought down by this crisis - or the chancellor suggests that everyone made the same mistakes - remember Canada. Nowhere is immune, but by most key measures, the Canadians are coming out of this crisis in a league of their own.

Take the banking system. Canada's banks have not just had fewer bailouts than other countries. They've had none. Zero. Not a dime."

Obama The Great Messiah has met the Queen. And what did he present her with as a present from the USA?

An ipod with a video of the US Royal Visit in 2007. Now, that is something that only a narcissist would think someone else would like; a video of themselves.

Does he seriously think that the Queen is going to watch it? Remember, she carries out visits in the UK and the World - on a daily basis. Does she, at night, sit back and watch herself on videos? We are aware that Obama, the Narcissist, gets his kicks that way - but...

What could he have given her? Oh, something from the history of the ties between Great Britain and the USA. But a video of herself?

Has the MSM reported on this?

"Meltdown! House cleared during public hearing; ITR president calls speaker a "Nazi"

A crowd of perhaps 600 Iowans was ordered out of the Iowa House tonight.

It happened during a public hearing on a tax bill Democrats are advancing. The crowd was booted for failing to abide by the rules of the House which prohibit "demonstrations of any type from the gallery." (Those words in quotation in the previous sentence are posted on a sign located at the door that leads to the seating areas which overlook the House floor.) Many in the crowd booed and hissed at those who did not share their opinion. They applauded and cheered those who agreed with their point of view.

Iowans for Tax Relief president Ed Failor, Junior, seemed to get the largest burst of applause and cheers from the crowd. Later, Failor accused House Speaker Pat Murphy (D-Dubuque) -- the leader who ordered the crowd out -- of being "a Nazi." (Read the full quote below.) Murphy ordered Failor escorted from the room. More developments on this breaking story as soon as possible.

UPDATE: I ran up to the House balcony when I continued to hear folks "demonstrating" during the public hearing (I admit I expected some sort of eruption.) Just before Murphy announced he was clearing the chamber, a few people in the crowd in front of me were clapping and yelling. Others were shushing them. "Be quiet," one older woman said to a man sitting beside her.

The crowd erupted in boos and jeers when Murphy ordered them out. "Welcome to the Soviet Union," Jim Draude of Pleasant Hill said on his way out of the House chamber. "...They want to hear what they want to hear. If they have someone that disagrees with them, they're looking for a reason to get rid of them.""

Obama: Change you can believe in. Small Change.

http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ODA4ZDQ0ODNiMGJkZTY2OWYyY2YzMmE2NTdhZThmMDE=

Diplomatic jaws dropped across the continent yesterday when it was revealed that U.S. President Barack Obama had, once again, fumbled a routine protocal of international statecraft: finding the right gift for a foreign leader or head of state. In a private ceremony with Queen Elizabeth, Her Royal Highness bequeathed to the Obamas one of the earliest known copies of William Shakespeare's Henry V. She also presented him with the framed orginal sheet music of John Newton's "Amazing Grace." To the Obama daughters, the Queen gave a dollhouse-sized replica of Windsor Castle with a functioning train station in the year of the compound. They also received a prize Shetland pony. Mrs. Obama was given a ruby ring commissioned and worn by Queen Victoria.

The Obamas, unfortunately, did not seem prepared for the occasion despite the row set off by the exchange of gifts between Prime Minister Brown and the U.S. President barely a month ago. Mr. Obama rather unceremoniously handed the Queen a shopping bag from the Duty Free shop at Heathrow airport. It contained a signed paperback copy of Dreams of My Father, purchased at the WH Smith shop at the airport, a bottle of Johnny Walker Scotch (black label), a CD of the Swedish band ABBA's greatest hits (still in shrink wrap with a 2-for-1 sticker on it) and ten bags of M&Ms with the presidential seal on them.

The Queen responded in a rather flat: "How delightful."

warwick - very funny. But the real ipod gift wasn't funny.

By the way, here's Tina Brown gushing over Michelle Obama; quite digusting really,

“The excitement British women feel about the arrival of Michelle Obama in London for the G-20 summit is spiked with awe. She’s so big-time. So self-confident. So devoid of rainy, British diffidence. In a country where most political wives and female members of Parliament are the stylistic equivalent of a tufted ottoman, Michelle’s kind of striding self-assurance, glamour, and broad demographic appeal feels thrillingly 21st-century. The fact that she’s African American adds an inspirational magic … "

And, then Ms Brown writes about the Queen, “Deeply worried about the financial crisis now sweeping Europe, the woman who has reigned longer than almost any other British monarch is as eager as all her countrywomen to come face to face with the future. When she looks into Michelle’s wide, warm eyes, she will see someone whose strength she will recognize at once as a new kind of Queen.”

Now, that's absolutely digusting 'writing' I can't call it writing but instead pure trash Harlequin gushing. The astonishing thing is that Ms Brown actually means this junk; she can't see it as obsequious nonsense.

Another of our above-the-law journalists bites the dust.

Toronto television host appeared in a St. John's courtroom on Wednesday in connection with an air rage incident aboard an Air Canada flight.

Colleen Walsh, 48, sat with her head down in provincial court in St. John's on Wednesday morning, as charges of obstructing the lawful use of an aircraft and of causing a disturbance were read.

During a morning appearance, Walsh kept her head down as she was led to and from the courtroom, to avoid TV cameras.

In the afternoon, Walsh — who hosts a program for Rogers Television called Structures, about the history and architecture of the Toronto area — left court with her head up, after she was released from custody.

Walsh, who over the years has worked for the CTV, CBC and Global television networks, agreed to conditions that she keep the peace. She also posted $2,500 bail.

The matter was set over until May.

Walsh was taken into custody on Tuesday night at St. John's International Airport, after the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded to a call that a passenger was shouting, swearing and using insulting language.

Acting Insp. Barry Constantine said the RNC had been alerted to "an unruly passenger" who had been aboard a flight that had just landed at the airport.

"The passenger was intoxicated and her behaviour did not improve after the police arrived," said a statement from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

Lawyer Ken Hollett, who is representing Walsh, told the court that he hopes this matter can be dealt with by way of speedy disposition, which generally means a guilty plea.

"Taxpayers Kicked Out of (Iowa) Capitol During Tax Debate (Video- taste of what is to come)

A debate over tax changes forces dems to clear the chamber. Looking at the video, however, you can see that the crowd was composed of mostly older, Amish types and there was no reason to kick these fine Americans out while they were merely excercising their free speech rights. A gazillion illegals can march and turn an entire state upside down, but if a group of hardworking American taxpayers says enough is enough, then -- there's the door. It's only a matter of time before our "Shot heard 'round the world" moment."

"Ousting bailed-out U.S. bank CEOs an option: Geithner

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Wednesday he would consider forcing out chief executives of banks that receive government bailouts if they were not managing their businesses properly. In an interview with CBS, Geithner said economic recovery depends on a financial system that effectively provides credit, and the government would hold companies receiving public aid accountable. When asked whether he left open the option to pressure a bank CEO to resign, Geithner responded, "Of course. Of course."

Adam Kirsch, Life on Venus: Europe's Last Man

The twentieth century, of course, did not turn out to be the age of the Last Man after all. The two world wars and the global violence of the Cold War demonstrated to anyone’s satisfaction that irrationality and cruelty, which Nietzsche feared were dwindling resources, still flourished in abundance just underneath the thin crust of modern civilization. But then came 1989 and the end of history—or at least The End of History and the Last Man, as Francis Fukuyama put it in his influential book. It is almost always referred to simply by the first part of its title; to his critics, Fukuyama is the man who declared “the end of history,” triumphally and, needless to say, prematurely.

But the second part of the book’s title is actually more telling, and more representative of Fukuyama’s argument...
