The sympathy with all these critters is so misplaced. Their populations are doing very well and they survived the Mini Climactic Optima of 900 to 1300 when there was no pack ice above the arctic circle in February.
The Politicians are the last to know. Lots of folks on here knew this was inevitable once the good times where over. After all you have no time for delusions while trying to feed yourself or find a job.
Environmentalism has had its day. With disasters aplenty. If not all the lies that have been told. Science perverted out of misplaced fanaticism. An out right premeditated power take over of industry by the UN. Time for real wildlife management. Lets deal with real pollution, not made up apocalypses or green Religions with an anti-human basis. Forget listening to any body bought & paid for like the UN is to other interests at war with us. Trying to destroy our heritage of hard won values, while weakening our industry.
Plus our own leeches trying to profit on a chicken little scenario. I wonder what the idiots who gave Gore his “Nobel prize” (In my mind bastardized ages ago by politics) think now?

"Condé Nast, publisher of Vanity Fair, argues that the environment has become so integral to the news agenda that there is no longer a need for a dedicated issue."
....or more likely, environmental alarmism has become synonymous with modish yellow journalism in the minds of the South Park generation of skeptics.....falling subscription and readership numbers have astute dead tree editors dropping the AGW meme like last year's gauche fad.
Well, I like Vanity Fair for the single reason that there is always at least one good article in the magazine to redeem the tripe and the hype. I also like Dominick Dunne (his reporting on the trial of that eery little weasel Phil Spector has been fascinating).
One of the plus features of Obama's election is that it finally seems to have ended Graydon Carter's tedious editorial obsession with Bush.
However, I do take much of VF with a big pinch of salt; it's hard to miss the irony of columns bleating about the ills and injustices of the world when they're wedged between page after page of advertising for Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, Tod's, Chanel, Burberry - you get the idea.
Under the bus. Will the lefties at Vanity Fair now eat their own little kittens?
Maybe one of the only reasons cap and trade is in the US budget is to leverage for heavy legislation on health care and education. Dems must know the poll numbers on carbon taxes.
I know of no higher form of hypocrisy than when a bunch of rich lefties converge on some "global warming" conference in their Gulfstreams. The agenda is always some variation of how to downgrade the lifestyles of the not-rich to "save the planet".

Next on the chopping block for the Left: choosing your friends, because, as everyone knows, choosing is discrimination, and no good Leftie wants to be guilty of that.
"But it is more likely to have been the whimsy of the fashion world that affected his decision – three years is a long time for any trend."
That pretty much sums up the sublime shallowness and hypocrisy of the whole media driven envirno blitz.
Here's a new trend I'm sure the useless VF trendsetters aren't missing: in an severe economic downturn expensive vacuous glossy magazines take a big hit when wallets snap shut and the mind gets galvanized on economic survival.
The natural end result of the AGW-Gaia green religion.

This is the terrifying moment a woman was attacked by a polar bear after jumping into its zoo enclosure.
The 32-year-old leapt over bars at Berlin Zoo during the bears' feeding time yesterday.
Despite six zookeepers' efforts to distract the four predators kept in the enclosure, the woman was bitten several times on her arms and legs."

Writing is on the wall for extreme ecofascism. With the info currently available, it is clear that we are heading for some nasty cooling and then all will realize that recent warming has been predominantly natural and that the hysteria has been manipulated for political purposes.

Not only that, but people will then realize than warming, on balance, is preferred over cooling.
"http://reason.tv/video/show/621.html" posted by paulhamer at 07:54 AM. Great video Paul. Seriously; the reason Polar bear or any other bear hunting is beneficial is because it culls the mature male bears out of the population. Only a very small number are taken mind you, but for each mature male bear killed, many bear cubs will survive. Large male bears kill cubs on contact. It's the instinctual habit of most large predators.
Check out the Eastern Slopes Grizzly Project, for example. Hunting is quite likely why all of our bear populations are doing so well today. Black bears have become a dangerous nuisance here in BC for example.

Vanity Fair, the hip, nowish magazine, is a leading indicator of all things fashionable....and not fashionable.
I suspect Hollywood is already pretty much off this issue.
the print media are losing money pushing the "green" issue.

Hah! So now they have "Madonna" on the cover who will save you! What a laugh for Easter weekend.
So now the environment 'green' issue is displaced by the economy 'green $$$' issue.

Sorry Texas Canuck but Vanity Fair isn't one of my must read type publications, last year, this year or any year.
maz2: Thanks for the bear feeding story.
Next the green AGW-Gaia enthusiasts will take up sleeping with tigers and lions, giving the notion of "let's do lunch" a whole new meaning.

Video of polar bear "attack".
"Zoo curator Heiner Kloser said: [...] It was terrible but we do not wish to identify the bear involved."
