Bob asks a good question at the link, "why don't the shipping companies hire armed security personnel".
I saw a news item on CBC a few nights ago about a couple sailing around the world in their 47 foot private sailboat. They were with another couple who had their own boat, same size.
Off Somalia, they were attacked by pirates. Their sailboat was riddled with bullet holes, but fortunately no one was hit. One of the couples had a shotgun and they returned fire on the pirates, then rammed their skiff with the steel hulled sailboat and sunk it.
Both sailboats successfully escaped.
If a lightly armed person in a small boat can drive off the pirates, could a well trained security officer with a Browning .50 caliber machine gun, firing from the deck of a freighter not do the same?
If nothing else,it would save our Navy the frustration of having to release dangerous criminals.
Initial reports from our lack-lustre MSM stated that HMCS Winnipeg has now released the Somali pirates she had earlier captured. I think we show terrific disrespect to the crew of the Winnipeg by not reiterating their total effort. We hope that the press will note that not only were the Somali pirates captured but also that;
The Deck Dept scrubbed, resealed and painted their skiff. The bosons manufactured appropriate seat cushions and a full canopy to protect the pirates from the equatorial sun.
The Engineering Dept stripped and serviced their engine, dressed the propeller and flushed the fuel system.
The Supply Dept had their clothing washed and repaired.
The Air Det installed a MP3 surround-sound system on their skiff and presented the pirates with a framed photo of their skiff in consort with the Winnipeg.
The ship’s Medic performed thorough physical checks, inoculated against diphtheria, yellow fever and TB along with issuing each pirate a supply of Cepacol throat lozenges.
The ship’s Canteen gave each Somali pirate a souvenir HMCS Winnipeg T-shirt and ball cap.
The Galley prepared two meals carefully following traditional Somali dietary guidelines.
The Combat Dept stripped, cleaned and checked their weapons paying particular attention to the corrosion found on all pieces. Swapped their cheap ChiCom ammunition for NATO standard rounds and recalibrated the sights on their RPGs.
The Engineering Dept installed a properly braced machine gun pintle.
The Navigator personally supplied the Somalis with a functioning pair of NVGs.
The Cox’n presented each pirate a complimentary bottle of Duty-Free and a carton of Export As.
We simply wish to bring these details to your attention.
Well given that the Nato and other international forces are not allowed to arrest the pirates, is there something that states that they can't sink the pirates boats first?
Then they can offer a choice, swim home or be taken to a country that can arrest and prosecute them.
I don't think it is a question of ability to sink the pirate skiff. I suppose a deck gun or a quick burst from the vulcan gun would saw the skiff in half PDQ.
Given the Navy crew gave the skiff warning shots which prompted the pirates to heave their gear overboard and surrender; the capture part appeared textbook according to the video.
When it comes to reporting on the military the MSM are chronically spinmeisters.
Had the pirates decided to return a volley, then the ROE would have permitted a whole lot of ugliness to descend upon them.
Cheers

Well back to Privateers. This is a good age to be in the security business. Our Navy did the job & than some. But you have to wonder why our politicians give any credence to the scum defending these maggots?
The people most disgusted with our current ROE right now are the Naval personnel subjected to them. Fact is though, they are told don't lose sleep over this, do your job as told and STFU.
Politicians run the military, right down to the rank of full Colonel. None (in their right mind)will jeopardize their career for the sake of foreign lives and the PMO WILL NOT, EVER sanction the killing of Africans or any foreign nationals unless a Canadian is killed first.
Far too many votes lost back home the day that happens. Votes are ALL that matter.
Repeat, ALL that matter.
And the Liberals were even worse.
Wake up and hammer your MP if you want a change in tactics otherwise, live with it.
The Captain of the Winnipeg would melt his gun barrels from use if given the choice.

Why the shipping companies do not hire armed security? Thanks to our beloved UN!
Any firearms on board have to be declared and inspected at every port. Imagine the paperwork!
