Y2Kyoto: Take The Earth Hour IQ Test

Canvassers will be in your neighborhood on the evening of March 28th, collecting the darkened addresses of the really stupid...

One provincial British newspaper wrote this week: "Saving the planet could be as easy as switching off the lights in South Tyneside, green campaigners say."

It will take more than the metropolitan borough of South Tyneside, population 152,000, to solve global warming. Even if a billion people turn off their lights this Saturday, the entire event will be equivalent to switching off China's emissions for six short seconds.

...and the easily distracted.

A United Nations document on "climate change" that will be distributed to a major environmental conclave next week envisions a huge reordering of the world economy, likely involving trillions of dollars in wealth transfer, millions of job losses and gains, new taxes, industrial relocations, new tariffs and subsidies, and complicated payments for greenhouse gas abatement schemes and carbon taxes — all under the supervision of the world body.

A local genius suggested people use candles for "Earth hour", don't want people stumbling around in the dark breaking bones, do we!

I said to my wife,an enthusiastic supporter of EH, "should we use the whale oil or seal blubber candles", and got a small chuckle.

Sigh.

In Australia last year, Earth Hour's organisers required participating businesses to pledge to reduce their emissions by 5 per cent during the following year. This year, that requirement has been dropped. "We decided we'd actually downplay (concrete cuts)this time," the chief executive of WWF Australia told The Sunday Age. There apparently has been no accounting of whether last year's sponsors lived up to their pledge.

No kidding.

If the UN gets its evil way, then you should get used to being in the dark as that's what it will be while you wait to find out whether you will freeze or starve to death.

If these psychopaths even try it there will be blood in the streets. Just how much do these idiots think we'll put up with??

I guess that's why the libs and dippers are desperately trying to retain the gun registry...

Chairman Mo's bonus is going to be pretty big!

Since you like to quote Lomborg, how about this:

"global warming is real and man-made. It will have a serious impact on humans and the environment toward the end of this century"

http://www.lomborg.com/faq/

more fun with Earth Hour

Europe, where this idiocy resides, needs another major war to purge them of their ruling classes again.

Since France demolished the Bastille, I suggest storming the EU and following it up with a new terror. Executions have come a long way since the guillotine so I'm sure they'll be able to purge themselves of their jackbooted totalitarian "rulers" in record time.

Then they can disband the evil mechanisms of their EU overlords, and re-write their constitutions to ban all supranational power-shifts to unaccountable, unelected global and/or pan-European bureaucracies.

The US will have to burn down the UN headquarters and banish any survivors to Antarctica where they can do no harm while they freeze.

Thanks for that quote greenneck... I wasn't going to turn on my appliances during earth hour in order to save money, but now I definately will. I HATE this COLD climate! Thanks!

Maybe everyone can turn off their furnaces as well.

"Kansas City Council members are urging residents to turn off their lights between 8:30 and 9:30 tonight, as part of an international event called “Earth Hour.”

BUT !!

"If you’ve put away your snow shovels and winter boots, dig them out.

Late March isn’t too late for a big snow — and part of the area is going to see one on Saturday.

“We know with 100 percent certainty someone’s going to get really clobbered,” National Weather Service senior meteorologist Evan Bookbinder said Thursday.

The question is: Who?

The incoming storm system — already battering western Kansas late Thursday night — is relatively narrow, Bookbinder explained. Forecasters won’t be able to pinpoint where it will hit here until it draws closer later today.

Around Kansas City, the southeast part of the metropolitan area will probably see the heaviest accumulation, potentially 6 inches or more."

lets see. you turn off the lights but the power plant has to keep running until you turn them back on again. f**king brilliant.

Most earth hour supporters have been doing their part by shutting off all electrical activity in their brains...

And by all indicatons they have had a difficult time restarting said activity.

And for those not paying attention, we've already seen a reordering of the economy, trillions of dollars of wealth have gone poof!, massive job losses with more to come, industrial relocations, new taxes, new subsidies and complicated schemes - how have you like them so far?

Or is massive economic disaster better when it's for gaia?

Kathryn

Yup, just a little more and European peasants will rise from the fields and drive out their kings and emperors with pitchforks.

People are docile while life is easy. Make life hard, people become a lot less docile.

As much as I crab about government over here in Canada, by world standards, we're doing fricken great!

Although I have to resent that Scotland has produced such vermin scum as Gordon Brown and that terrorist supporting creep GGalloway. May they get rot beneath their kilts!

Lomberg's views are well known, and he's been quoted here before. They happen to align quite nicely with my own in one important way - that if the modelling forecasts of AGW turn out to be accurate, our best approach is adaptation, not the destruction of western economies.

nemo - actually that CTV poll is, like so many such pop polls, invalid by virtue of the questions.
It has three VALUES to its one question;
Are you turning off the lights for Earth Hour
Value 1: yes
Value 2: no
Value 3: 'what's earth hour'?

The ratio at the moment is 46,38,16. BUT, Values 1 and 2 assume that you already know what 'Earth Hour' means. Since 16% don't know, and therefore, have no intentionality to change their habits, that 16 ought to be added to value 2- No. Which brings the 'no's up to 54.

In Europe, the regular political activists who make a living protesting any hint of regulations and authority, are threatening any and all who keep their lights on. Incredible, how in the name of a rejection of authority, these people inflict tyranny.

So when the power goes here due to blizzards for days on end - should the media call it "Earth Days".

What I cannot understand is why the environmental movement is not happier. The recession has helped acheived a lot of their goals: less consumption, less travel, more local gardening...

Kate loved the twitter nonsense update.

The efficacy of the gun registry?

Oh that is working just wonderfully isn't it.

Yesterday they had a swath of arrests due to a hit man cooperating with police, who was responsible for some 28 hits. Every hit man is just dying to register his weapon of choice.

Oh and the gangland scene in the Lower Mainland has shown just how excellently the gun registry is working. What are we up to now 18 bodies and counting?

MORONS ONE AND ALL. Where do you find all these braying jackasses?

Cheers

Anglicans worship/celebrate Gaia with candles.
Via Media has vanished into heresy and "earth-friendly cleansers", the neo-incense of the Gaiasts.

Swing your censer, Gaia.

A candlelight service and discussion about earth-friendly cleansers are highlights of Saturday’s Earth Hour celebrations at Brockville’s Parish of St. Lawrence Anglican Church."

I'm gonna turn up the heat and leave the fridge door open. Devin Johnston can come and get me.

You'll know which house is mine Devin, there'll be a giant lawnmower idling in the driveway.

There was a French goddess named Claire,
Who had a boyfriend named Blair.
They spent earth hour in the dark,
With no light but their spark,
And a final cry that raised everyone's hair.

I gather twitter doesn't have a spell check or grammer check. (or idiot check either for that matter.)

"And for those not paying attention, we've already seen a reordering of the economy, "

Right as usual Kathryn. I've been saying for some time now that we've already lost this battle, it's time to regroup. Cap n' Trade is here, there is a consensus between our leaders. Now we must hope that PMSH knows what he is doing, and is able to protect Canadian wealth and position us to come out on top.

IMO conservatives in Canada are too busy spinning our wheels on this issue, and how we're insulted we are when someone says something we don't like. We've lost our focus(at the grassroots level), if we're going to make noise, we should be doing it towards an end like: lower taxes, free speech, LAW & ORDER, defense ect.

I'm an engineer in "the oilpatch", and I am convinced that global warming is total BS, pushed by Al "chicken little" Gore to increase profits for his carbon trading business.

But I still believe in conservation. And I still believe that wasting as much energy as you possibly can, just to "make a statement" is dumber than turning your lights off.

"But I still believe in conservation. "
Most of us do, but "Earth Hour" has very little to do with conservation from what I've seen.

Mmmmmm. A dark Saturday evening. Candle light. No other entertainment.

It is well known that power outages cause an increase in births nine months later.

But the eco-fanatics say there are too many people on earth already !!??

[Note: the world's birth rate is falling dramatically. In another twenty years the earth's population total may actually start falling. Rug pulled]

I notice there’s a lot of uninformed supposition being thrown around here. It always helps to put figures to this kind of discussion.

1 ton of coal has an energy content of roughly 6150 kWh. The thermal efficiency of coal-fired generating stations runs from 33% to 50% at best. Let’s be generous and say that you can get 3000 kWh of electricity out of a tonne of coal. According to the CSA, the conversion ratio for coal to carbon dioxide is 2.48, so a tonne of coal produces 2480 kg of carbon dioxide. For every kWh of electricity you consume from a coal-fired generating station, therefore, you’re producing 0.83 kg of carbon dioxide.

It takes .06 kWh to run a 60-watt lightbulb for 1 hour. Let’s say you turn off 10 of them for 1 hour – you’re saving 0.6 kWh. Which means you’re saving the planet from the deadly effects of 0.496 kg of carbon dioxide.

Now, the average human being exhales 1 kg of carbon dioxide a day – more if you spend most of your waking hours bleating about how cow farts are drowning polar bears. So, logically, if everybody who’s worried about global warming would simply hold their breath for 12 hours next Saturday, they’d save the same amount of CO2 as if they all turned of 10 lightbulbs for 1 hour.

Incidentally, this solution would also go a long way towards meeting Jonathan Porritt’s objective of reducing UK carbon emissions by exterminating 50% of the population of "that sceptre'd isle". On the downside, though, video sales of algore’s crockumentary would probably decline due to the irreversible horizontalization of his target demographic.

But I’m sure ole’ Al would be willing to take one for the planet.

Chris, it's slowly dawning on me that the politics are more than the event. I think I'll just STFU. :(

Calgary actually had an increase in energy consumption during Earth Hour 2008, according to a local radio station. A real embarassment.
So, extra effort has been made to guilt business into reducing energy usage during the 2009 event.
My outside lights will be on, front and back, during EA 2009 as they were in '08.

"But I still believe in conservation. And I still believe that wasting as much energy as you possibly can, just to "make a statement" is dumber than turning your lights off."

Yeah but it's all fun and nobody gets their eye poked out.

We turn off all electrical appliances for one hour under the illusion that this will somehow be environmentally sound and then turn them all back on again.
Riiiiight.

Just because people are told to be a dear and register their guns doesnt mean the criminal is going to bother with the paperwork.

Just because a bunch of self-righteous idiots have a candle light dinner doesnt mean the power plant is shutting down for a single hour.

I'm pulling out the old breadmaker while my oven is cleaning, we're going to find out if I can still make a mean cornbread!

Wonder what's going on here ?

Remember, sarc is the default position.

Incredible, how in the name of a rejection of authority, these people inflict tyranny.

Not so incredible, ET. Liberalism requires crises - either real or (more often than not) manufactured in order ramrod through policies and mandates that most people would never accept in the normal course of life. Therefore, you have the bogus crises of AGW, the "War on Poverty", the "dangers of unregulated free speech". Of course, liberals tend to balk and scoff at real threats, such as the War on Terror; they reject those out of hand for pretend issues.

It's based on people who want to control others via the authority of the state; this will always require the use of force to implement.

ET: Yes, there are two polls, one at the CTV home page, and the other, to which I referred, at CTV Canada A.M.

I voted in both.

I love the recent emergence of the portrayal of Conservatives just being a group that says NO all the time.

So lets see some positions on the left...

Nuclear Power...NO
Clean Coal ... NO
Seal Hunt ... NO
NATO Commitments ... NO
Free Trade .... NO
Oil Sands ... NO

I can go on and on but you can see that it just depends on the starting position which group is the NO group.

"IQ" test in relation to E Day? Unless it has been changed to Idiot Quotient, then it has no meaning.

Earth Hour means I will celebrate by using some of the great conveniences man has invented since the dark ages. Among them electricity and all manner of appliances to make life easier. That means I'll turn on TV's, every damned light in and around my home, wash a load of laundry, and dishes as well.

In our one horse town we have water meters. We conserved too well and the brains in Council are penalizing us by charging us 20% more for water and sewer. So, no I won't be obeying idiotic ideas, we'll leave that to the nuts who say we should only use one square of toilet paper per wipe.

Liz J says "we'll leave that to the nuts who say we should only use one square of toilet paper per wipe."
................

Wow, you're still WIPING? Get with the program....in the new era we'll need some way to be able to locate people in the dark. :-)

I recently hard wired an exta 1500W of light into my living room (wife likes to sew). Nice white light. So much light that I can illuminate the street via my living room window.

So during EH I figure I'll turn on all the lights on the front side of the house, open all the curtains and sit by the front door with my "baby seal club" and wait for the eco-nazis to show up.

Now I know that baiting dumb animals comes with a host of ethical/moral issues as well as not being fair but in this case I think it's acceptable to reduce the number of idiots in the world and thus reduce the strain on mother earth.

Ultimately these eco-fascists believe in limiting and reducing the world's population anyway so I'll do my part and help out. To lead by example and avoid hypocrisy these ecomoonbats should volunteer to off themselves anyway.

Now I'm as green as the next guy, my question is how to recycle the carcasses. Can you compost and use as fertilizer?

Dave.

Illiquid Assets @ 2:39:

You may want to add this one to the left's list of no's:

Freedom of Speech

(see commenter Ulianov saying Rush should be regulated out of business in the Rush Limbaugh thread above...)

I'm glad I didn't take down the Christmas lights...

Well I'm giving in to the econuts. This spring I'm going to install an outhouse.
It will use no water or
electricity since I won't be installing a light.
We are thinking black for colour to take advantage of the winter sun's heat,it's the least we could do.
Think of the savings,no water,no electricity,no tp only recycled newspapers.
And in a couple of years when we need to move it we will have a very nice green square of grass in our lawn.

Could I just make a point using an analogy from Jesus Christ. In th esermon on the mount he told people to do their fasting and praying in private, unseen by others, so that they would not be showing the pain on their faces and seeking praise from fellow men for their superiority.
Here we are seeing (the most important part, to them) a bunch of people trying to conserve energy or resources for ONE HOUR, doing for that hour what we conservatives do as a part of our daily lives. I can be responsible without an audience.

Consider this----turning out lights for "Earth Hour" means you approve and are committed to surrendering your liberty on a broad venue to the discreation and whims of such luminaries as Hedy Frey, Elizabeth May, Wendy Cukier..........

I'm 'celebrating' Earth hour this year on a 747 between Frankfurt and Hong Kong. If I could figure out when 8:30 is on the plane (it will be a moving target for me that night) I'd turn off the light over my seat! And maybe in the in-flight entertainment if it wasn't a good movie!!

I'd light a candle too but I'm guessing that isn't allowed.

Last year we went for a walk in Copenhagen during Earth Hour and saw no visible signs of support in the streets of our neighbourhood. So my guess is that Europeans, by and large, don't care. Most of the houses were pretty dark but tv's were on because people don't waste electricity there due to the financial incentive not to. Electricity is expensive.

As a conservative, I abhor waste and I love being in Europe because there are far more logical approaches to cutting back on energy consumption (i.e. stairwells aren't lit 24 hours a day, they have light switches at each landing that turn the lights on for 3 - 5 minutes - enough time to get up or down stairs.)

That's where to have publicity campaigns, not a single hour once a year.

Will Mcnair nailed it,

“that’s like dismissing the efficacy of the gun registry by shooting someone.”

Now is this particular shooting being done with a registered gun? That would make the gun registry very effective. Only registered guns are used to shoot someone.

Let's hypothesyze this particular shooting is occurring with an un-registered gun. How effective is the gun registry now? An un-registered gun is used to shoot someone.

The police should inform that individual only registered guns can be used to shoot someone.

The efficiency of the gun registry has been proven in many countries, statics show over & over again the absolute futileness and danger of such programs.

I just submitted the following comments on the Law is Cool site. It's currently "pending moderation" so to speak. In case it gets lost in the ether, here it is.

"Intersting line at the end of the statement:

“Third, it suggests that the blogosphere is in dire need of a more, shall we say, Law-Is-Cool-esque level of discourse”

And what level would that be?

Would it be the level where we all think and say the same thing…because that’s what our Professors told us to think and say?

Would it be the same level that tells us to believe everything we hear because it came from the mouths of Al Gore or David Suzuki?

Would it be the same level that prevents other voices from joining the debate because they do not agree with the subscribed mantra of the Ivy League and elitist clubs?

Please share your infinite wisdom with we knuckle draggers. While you’re at it….look up the word hubris.

and if you can’t find that word…..try “dork-wad”

Geez guys…..(and girls)…if this is your level of critical thought, remind me to defend myself in court if the need every arises. Frankly, you are doing the reputation of lawyers a disservice, and given that the reputations of lawyers is below slug-slime……that’s an impressive accomplishment.

Tell you what….the next time you hear some scientist or activist tell you that Global Warming is real, and that the debate is over…ask them why they keep insisting on taxpayer grants to carry on with their “research.”

That’s basic logic folks……if the debate is officially over, then why the insistence on more money? Pehaps there is more to Global Warming that temperature….maybe money? Fame? Glory?

I daresay that many of the “scientists” on the Global Warming bandwagon are going to look like real idiots very soon. Credibility gone…funding gone, and hopefully the idiots who bought into the claptrap will start thinking for themselves.

If not…they may as well go to Law School."

Well put GreyOne40.

I have reduced the energy of my properties by over 40%.

How? By installing high eff furnaces, in-line water heaters, windows, doors, caulking, etc.

It has nothing to do with earth hour and everything to do with making my properties more profitable.

I have never asked for a government grant nor recognition.

On the other hand, my neighbours, who push their euro-weenie lawnmowers thinking they are saving the planet, drive around town in their gas guzzling SUV's and minivans, living their lives as hyprocrites.
