Well, is my face red.
As people around the world spent the evening of March 28th marking the Hour of Power, Human Achievement Hour, and the Ceremonial Banishment of the Snows, the World Wildlife Fund was encouraging others to participate in an event they called "Earth Hour" to "raise awareness" of something they call "global warming".
Environmentalists hail Earth Hour as a big success
"The world said yes to climate action, now governments must follow," the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said a day after hundreds of millions of people worldwide followed its call to turn off lights for a full hour.
From an Antarctic research base and the Great Pyramids of Egypt, from the Colosseum in Rome to the Empire State building in New York, illuminated patches of the globe went dark Saturday night to highlight the threat of climate change. Time zone by time zone, nearly 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries dimmed nonessential lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
WWF called the event, which began in Australia in 2007 and grew last year to 400 cities worldwide, "the world's first-ever global vote about the future of our planet."
"Last night's message from the masses was loud and clear: Delay no more, real action now!" Kim Carstensen, the leader of WWF's Global Climate Initiative, said in a statement.
Well, here in Saskatchewan, not so much. SaskPower: Earth Hour Had "No Measureable Effect
Had I known, I'd have helped get the word out.
But back to the WWF - what is this "climate action" that they speak of?

"Using the carbon footprint calculator on the WWF’s own web site, the 36,800-mile trip in a Boeing 757 jet will burn about 100,000 gallons of jet fuel to produce roughly 1,231 tons of CO2 in 25 days — that’s the equivalent of putting about 1,560 SUVs on the road during those three-plus weeks and that doesn’t even include emissions related to local air, ground and water transport and other amenities."
I'm told they're turning the cabin lights down.
More World Wildlife Fund tours for the carbon-reducing set: the Galápagos (multiple year round departures, including Galápagos Multisport ), snorkeling Thailand, Botswana by Land Rover, and the "end of the earth appeal" of Borneo.
If you tickle those 'tangs, they giggle like schoolgirls!
Related - "The kicker, though, were the dozen or so floodlights grandly highlighting several trees and illuminating the driveway entrance of Gore’s mansion."

When I heard an environmentalist equate "earth hour" to the "civil rights marches" of the 60's, I realized how out to lunch these people are. Especially as we still have 5' drifts in our yard and this morning it is -12.
I am waiting for the first weenie to say that the "cold, snowy" spring is caused by "climate change" or worse "global warming".
Of course it is global warming that's causing the cold wheather in Alberta.
The beauty of the global warming theory is that it explains every possible wheather event, i.e. it is virtually impossible to prove wrong!
"If you tickle those 'tangs, they giggle like schoolgirls!"
Say it aloud once and you'll be saying it all week.
We shouldn't be surprised at the absurdities coming from the WWF these days. It's evolved into a self sustaining PR corporation replete with all the schlocky corporate hucksterism pop marketing can scheme up.
The wildlife welfare stopped being the motive and focus of WWF in the mid 70s. The focus of this bloated self interest dinosaur is revenues to pay the slaraies of executive staff and tenured "expert" parasites ..... and they go after the upscale patrons fpr the big cash these days with motivational and lifestyle marketing programs aimed at selling "Earth pop star" stigma to stodgy establishment trust funds and institutions as well as "Friend-of-the-earth" honorariums to corporate conglomerates looking to put the WWF logo on their product packaging as a purchase incentive to affluent lefty urbanites with earth-guilt for their decadent lifestyles.
I bet if we look at the small print on this lavish jet set "earth junket" we'll find carbon offset credit (pollution absolution) was purchased from some Iowa farmer who has reduced his (farting) hog production so decadent yuppies can be wined and dined in comfort while they have their guilt complexes exploited by these rapacious WWF earth first grifters.
Civil rights leader: another AGW heretic.
More, please, and faster.
...-
"CORE Leader Blasts Global-warming Alarmists
While most civil rights organizations are marching in lock-step with the leftist climate catastrophe alarmists, Roy Innis, leader of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) for 35 years, has broken ranks and is urging the poor and black communities to rebel against purveyors of global-warming gloom and doom and other radical environmentalists. Speaking at the 2009 Conference in New York City last week, Innis said, "A lot of people are searching for the right thing to believe in and [have been] captured by a corrupted ideology," a "green" religion.
As examples of how "'green' has become a religion ... un-quantified and undefined," the CORE leader relates the stories of two women, one in the urban United States and the other in a poverty-stricken village in Africa. The relatively affluent Chicago woman was complaining about the price of gas. Asked if she would be in favor of opening an oilfield about the size of O’Hare airport on a small part of the isolated Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), she adamantly objected because of "harm to the environment." Asked if she had been there, was going there, or even knew anyone else who might be interested in ANWR, she answered "No," but still refused to consider such drilling to gain an ability to use domestic oil thus giving less control to foreign sources and ultimately lowering her fuel prices.
An ocean away the second woman was mother of a child sick of malaria and very likely to die. She was admonished to use DDT to rid her hut and her village of the Anopheles mosquito. While this would probably not save her baby, at least it would prevent similar occurrences in the future. She refused. Why? Even though approximately one million African children die of the disease that can be controlled by applications of DDT, an insecticide so safe that a human can eat a teaspoon a day without harm, this poverty-stricken woman has been sufficiently filled with environmental extremist propaganda that she will trade her family's and fellow villagers' lives rather than rick using DDT.
“Coal and natural gas are the new civil rights battleground,” says Innis, “because without these sources, ‘we’ cannot enjoy this great society.”
Regarding the oil man constantly on television promoting wind energy from Canada to Texas, Innis is anything but equivocal: “T.B. Pickens is part of a conspiracy against decency.”"

Not to mention the added CO2/hot air/whatever of the house burning, the fire trucks, etc.
what Al Gore and especially Dr. Mengele Suzuki would like us to get back to.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_River_Trails
I cant forget the images that Suzuki and CBCpravda put up of carts in Cuba saying this is the kind of sustainable agriculture Canada needs.
CBCpravda All Ridiculous All the Time.
anyone else notice on the CTVtass site that the political headlines have been Iggy for 4 days straight.
I'm told they're turning the cabin lights down.
LOL
Light the torches and get the pitchforks, these gw witches are goin down.
Hmmmm. Turning the lights out during Human Achievement Hour on all those symbols of human achievement ("Great Pyramids of Egypt, from the Colosseum in Rome to the Empire State building in New York", being examples), just about says it all. These ditzes hate themselves.
Earth Hour? I was going to burn a tire in my back yard but in the end, I forgot all about it.
I think it was Michael Crichton that said all special interest groups should have to disband after 10 years. After that length of time it becomes about the organization and not the original cause.
The WWF and GreenPeace are perfect examples.
Drove back from Kamloops yesterday after a week of skiing. Had it tuned to the local radio station. Laughed when they said that the 2009 earth hour was bigger than the 2008, even though in 2008 they actually consumed 2.5% more energy than 2007, which they blamed on a colder than normal winter. This was the coldest we have had at Sun Peaks in 4 years -- I wonder how much more energy was actually consumed this year over last year? BTW, we were in a 103degree hot tub during the actual earth hour.
Louise: Wouldn't you?
Seems like St Al of Gore has had the info removed from Nashville Post. I guess he must be very embarrassed to be outed as the big fat hippocrit that everybody knows he is. Oops I guess I be in trouble for calling the big fat hippocrit a big fat hippocrit...
gee with the WWF pumping out CO2 like that I don't feel so bad about me and my 2 boys playing summer hockey, well never really did in the first place; anyway the WWF is probably buying offsets from Al Bore so that makes it OK in their leftoid fantasy world.
WWF? Should be WTF.
I must confess that in the very distant past (the last century), I supported the WWF and thought that they had an important message about conservation of the earth's special places and wildlife. However that was a long time ago and its obvious that they have evolved into a self serving political movement that doesn't do much except agitate and cause human misery. I am still on their mailing list and must say that I derive much satisfaction when I use their labels, cards and stamps but don't contribute to the cause. A small act of defiance on my part but it works for me.
well, in calgary here...i turned my furnace up to 26 degrees, and opened my windows...tried to use convective currents to force some of the stale winter air out of the corners of my home.
I still have a bag of incandescent lights from when everything got switched to CFL's. I put them into a number of sockets around my house to test which ones still worked, for emergency purposes of course.
I got a couple loads of laundry through the dryer, high heat setting of course. I had to turn the stereo up pretty so I could hear it outside while I was using a steam cleaner to melt ice off my porch. It worked really well! I only blew the circuit breaker twice.
"Hundreds of millions of people" (apparently Associated Press members ran around and counted them) turned off their *non-essential* lights -- not their fridges or stoves or power tools or furnaces or TVs or computers or stereos or air-conditioners, etc -- for a *full hour.*
In other words, the fact that maybe one-thirtieth of the world turned off "non-essential lights" for a duration of about one nine-thousandth of a year means "the world said yes to climate action, now governments must follow."
The enviro-moonies are nutters.
Wow, now they think they have a mandate to brow beat the public with a environmentalist agenda. Meanwhile no news of how Calgary did during hypocrite hour. I did my part with a stress test of my electrical panel. I am now confident it can handle anything I through at it. Fight back one politician at a time, at all levels of government before it's to late.
Atlantic Jim - I think that's an essential, a vital, a key point.
All special interest groups ought to disband after ten years because after that time, the focus moves from the welfare of the interest to the welfare of the group's existence. And those are two very different agendas.
The World Wildlife Fund . . nice little business these guys have going on. The guy running it is an MBA type . . go figure!
Wonder what their Executive Compensation package is like ?
"Operating revenues grew to $196.5 million, a 22 percent increase over the FY07 total of $160.8 million. This growth was made possible through the contributions of our many valued supporters. We received $85.7 million from our members and donors, $26.1 million in government awards, $19.3 million from foundations, $14.6 million from other WWF Network organizations, $10.1 million from corporations, and $40.7 million in other revenues, including in-kind contributions of media and equipment important to advancing our work"
Not exactly did we vote for climate panic... I certainly didn't... and documented such.
Whether these enviro whacks are nuts or not, it's looking a lot like they are winning. That doesn't make them right, just successful.
Other than V Klas of Chek Republic, what leaders are not on board with this scam?
Many countries who know it's a scam are on the receiving end of it ... IE Russia and a bunch of other backward non-producing entities.
They will take other people's money in exchange for continuing to not produce anything. Why not? We know that people on welfare like that sort of arrangement as well.
It's human nature to be a parasite if possible. Canada practically pioneered that attitude among it's population.
The righteous are those who can overcome weakness in their nature and do what is right. Those would be the real conservatives who are more realistic and adult about decision making. Their numbers are in decline as well.
I think this big divide will eventually come to civil war. It's already happening, except for the fact that so far everyone still at the shooting from the lip stage.
Consider this. Obama and all his riff raff are all about "organizing". They are organized quite well. That is how Obongo won the election. Who the hell is doing any organizing on the right?
No one!
Again, the whacks are winning because we aren't even in the fight.
Who new I had burned out outdoor bulbs that needed smashing and bagging ?
Thanks Kate.
Earth Hour nearly claims a family:
I'm in Mississauga right now and the EH voltage didn't drop a bit around our place. Streets brightly lit, lights and TV's on in neigboring condos as well as ours.
I'd say it was a pretty Ho-Hum affair in most people's minds. Could still see all the lights on downtown Toronto, 30 kilometers away.
The ones that burnt their place down with a candle would not have survived the Industrial Revolution. They'd be pushing up daisies in some foggy grave yard, if there was anything left to bury.
Momar, exactly correct. How do we turn this around?
As for the rest of you pikers, distant countrymen excepted, we had three TVs going, two in rooms no one inhabited, three PCs burning and a round-trip drive to the ashram that disrupted the morning for two neighborhoods twice. Had to forego the burnout display at the ashram because of the brick street surface. Where there's no friction, there's no display. There is a terrific new dual burnout strip in front of the house from the mailbox to the court. I'm sure there will be discussion at the association meeting.
ET,
Does that mean the 10 year clock is ticking on SDA? How many years left?
Kate,
Can you please explain your point? You go on and on about GW, WWF and Al Gore. Personally I'm not taken in by this nonsense and as a consequence put little energy into it.
The best defense is a good offense and all you do is play defense. Maybe an open forum on the failures of conservatism would be a good offensive starting point.
BTW My family took a vote on Saturday at dinner and the vote was 3 against 1 to observe earth hour, so the lights and everything else stayed on.
Crazy ! The eco-fanatics want us to destroy our lifestyles in order to reduce the amount of an essential, odorless, invisible gas - constituting only 0.03% of the atmosphere.
Crazy ! When considering that this poor thing is trying to grow our food;
[ The fundamental reason why carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is critically important to biology is that there is so little of it. A field of corn growing in full sunlight in the middle of the day uses up all the carbon dioxide within a meter of the ground in about five minutes. If the air were not constantly stirred by convection currents and winds, the corn would stop growing.] Freeman Dyson
And we would stop eating. And die. WWF's objective ? Population reduction ?
'"the world said yes to climate action, now governments must follow."'
Whoever wrote that statement (quoted & debunked by EBD) seem pretty good at getting things backwards.
ET: Kate is doing her part, her style of putting things out there with subtle remarks and letting readers judge for themselves is very effective.
I myself am a huge conservationalist, I love wildlife and nature. But when the WWF decided to embrace the cause of saving the polar bear, I knew the organization was a joke.
There are enough real conservation problems in the world: I really hope that the gorillas, tigers and rhinos can be saved, the North Atlantic right whales and the Blue whales, and the coral reefs everywhere. There are so many real issues to be tackled rather than the false ones such as AGW.
A little tongue in cheek Earth hour humour.

Fifteen Patients Die as Earth Hour Kills Life Support in Hospital
By Brian Briggs
San Francisco, CA – Fifteen patients on life support and in surgery died at San Francisco General Hospital when power was cut for "Earth hour" on Saturday.
The hospital was pleased with their participation in the worldwide celebration of the planet. "We asked all the patients and their families if they were all right with us cutting the power. To a person, they all said as stewards of this planet it was their duty to observe Earth Hour. They knew the risks and were willing to take it," said hospital administrator Lawrence Cho.
Cho said that it was a net gain for planet Earth, despite the deaths. "The dead patients will no longer use any energy, and actually will be turned into energy in our patient incinerator," said hospital administrator Lawrence Cho.
As power was cut in the critical care ward some patients screamed in pain, others died calmly in their sleep. Cho said that most of the medical equipment has battery-powered back up systems, but those were disabled, because hospital officials felt that violated the spirit of Earth Hour.
Heart surgeon Dr. Gregory Morris was doing an open-heart procedure when the lights went out. "I wasn't sure what I was cutting into. Turns out it wasn't his heart, but his bowels. Unfortunately, Mr. Simms didn't make it."
Marla Tompkins, surviving sister of cancer patient Warren Tompkins, said, "Warren struggled for breath as his ventilator was powered down. I thought he might make it, but with three minutes left before power was to be turned back on, he expired. It was tragic, but kept me on the edge of the seat the whole time."
Cho hopes other hospitals learn from the example of San Francisco General and participate in next year's Earth Hour.
I think it's a hoax, Kyle
Momar is correct, these crusading corporate eco-mystics are winning. Until we stop allowing the parroting of their hysteria, masquerading as public education, this nonsense will continue. Hopefully, this vacuous symbolism won't inspire much more political action, this time.
The ignorant urban masses (and a few rural folks)will, unfortunately, continue to pour money into their coffers.
I found the comments here regarding the WWF interesting - in the past I too have supported them. They were a decent organization once.
But I would never support them today. They have changed for the worse. I never understood what went wrong with the WWF, so I find it very enlightening to read what some of you have to say.
"Well, is my face red."
Kate, you're too funny!
Wendy
The WWF is populated by the "champagne socialists" who depend on the useful idiots for their livelihoods. Fraud artists, just like "man pig bear".
Let's see--jet fuel weighs just under 7 pounds per gallon. 100,000 gallons would be 700,000 pounds. 700,000 pounds is 350 tons. Where did the other 881 TONS of matter come from? Are they on to something new?
EBD: "turned off their *non-essential* lights [] for a *full hour.*"
I don't know about you but that level of sacrifice, dedication and commitment to "the greatest crisis humans have ever faced"(TM) brings a tear to my eye. (Okay, it's tear from laughter but still...)
The Left's biggest advantage ? The Religious part of the Right. Easy target.
The Left thinks candles during Earth Hour are no more fake than those in church.
There's something appropriate about these earthies sitting in the dark. It kind of symbolic of where they're at.
I wrote a post about the scam of Earth Hour and someone bravely hiding behind the moniker "anonymous" replied to it saying "judge not lest ye be judged, (expletive expletive)". I've asked that person to explain him/herself but as of yet I've had no reply. I guess even hinting that Earth Hour is a huge farce is enough to get the creepy-crawlies out of the woodwork.
This is why sites like SDA are important. Make the whackos who waste energy being stupid explain themselves. Pointing out that something might be a total waste of time can't be counter-productive.
For the haters of western civilization:

Kyle,
With that type of imagination try to describe the Emergency exit of California (LA/San-Fran) before the big earth quake chips that state into the Pacific Ocean.
Those electric cars need 4 hrs of charge time for 4 hours of drive time. In clogged interstates the stop & go will suck the juice dry in ~ 12 miles. The rodents will Mill around wondering why they must be the ones sacrificed. NOT FAIR!
The best part of payback is in the dark humor..
Right you are, Bruce. The sun was shining in the Yukon during the reactionary hour of Pittish worship! I do blame the ancient Pitts of Scotland for this ritual performance - they wore red paint (assuming you are a Scot Kate, I reasoned that this was the source of the 'red face syndrome). The Pitts, unlike the gorgiles, thought that all nature was sacred - the Pitts did not condemn foliage and other life for emitting a gas! The gorgiles and fruit fly people would rid the earth of all beauty for money. The WWF have twisted the ideas of an ancient tribe of people who really did worship God's creations.
BTW, My family came to Canada from Scotland over two hundred years ago, forget reporting me to the HRC.
The real question is: is the goricle a Scot? Fruit fly is not; is the fruit fly a plagiarist? Burning questions for the msm. The ideas of these fools are not new, of course...everything they promote is recycled and it shows...
" .. judge not lest ye be judged .."
Exactly my point. The Left's most effective tactic.
Let's see--jet fuel weighs just under 7 pounds per gallon. 100,000 gallons would be 700,000 pounds. 700,000 pounds is 350 tons. Where did the other 881 TONS of matter come from? Are they on to something new?
Posted by: Narimasu at March 30, 2009 12:51 PM
Narimasu, I'm sure someone else can respond more scientifically to this, but fuel needs oxygen to burn, and since it's forming CO2, it needs 2 oxygens for every carbon, so it's actually taking mass from the air needed to burn fuel. Correct anyone?
Narimasu
"Let's see--jet fuel weighs just under 7 pounds per gallon. 100,000 gallons would be 700,000 pounds. 700,000 pounds is 350 tons. Where did the other 881 TONS of matter come from? Are they on to something new?"
I take a perverse pride in being fair---even with the eco-whachos....I maybe does make sense...
Although CO2 AGW is an obvious fantasy......
1 molecule of Carbon + 1 molecule Oxygen Gas(Oxygen as a gas is O2) = CO2
Combusting jet fuel (oxidation) combines the weight of the fuel and the oxident (atmosphere).
I hope that clarifys your fuzzification.....
These psuedo "scientists" have us all confused.....
Ron In Kelowna: Bingo. Judgment is deferred to everyone else but them. I mean- if someone was to publicly make them accountable for the things they do and say, would anyone side with the left? No one wants to be on the losing side of an argument.
