Hey, Chronicle Herald news staff - your psychic called. She wants her job back.

"This is an artist’s impression of what the Halifax waterfront could look like at high tide if sea levels were to rise by about six metres, a plausible result if global warming accelerates the melting of the Earth’s icecaps. In this scenario, Lower Water Street would have to be renamed Under Water Street." |

That's right, Halifax could soon go the way of the Maldives. You remember the Maldives? The island nation that was swept from existence by our SUV-driven rising oceans as Al Gore's film crew watched helplessly?
Coincidentally enough, over at Watts Up With That - " Perhaps the next IPCC conference can be in the Maldives instead of Bali."

Check it out. Expecially if you happen to "report" for the Chronicle Herald.

Several commentors have also noted that "staff reporter" Kelly Shiers "has no idea where Rome is."
Or how old.

Perhaps I shouldn't rush to get into the boat building trade?
Utterly hilarious, this bonehead Kelly Shier thinks that Rome was once underwater 4000 years ago.
the herald, itself, is struggling to stay afloat: http://www.thecoast.ca/halifax/victims-of-the-herald/Content?oid=1091935
MSM Journalist Rule #1 - never let facts get in the way of a good story.
"The Rocky Mountain News, gone. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, gone. Today the Ann Arbor (Michigan) News announced it would publish its last edition in July. Three other papers announced today they're cutting back to three print editions a week. At least 120 newspapers have shut down since January 2008, according to Paper Cuts, a Web site that tracks the industry."

Could you do an artist's rendition of what Saskatchewan might look like with a 6m increase in sea levels?
My folks live just north of NB and would appreciate knowing where to put the dock to greet the advance of Jackfish Lake.
Thanks in advance.

hey, the herald just halted comments for this article; too overheated? a flood of comments?
This is the sort of thing I alluded to in another thread here in SDA Nation.
Nova Scotians are beset with limited sources of printed news: The Chronicle Herald and the G&M. So, IMO, they're only getting one side of many important stories and issues.
"Gezzuz Mary, did ya see da story on the front cover of the Herald? The water's practically up to Lower Water St!"
"Yes bye, I saws it. If you ask me, it's those gd central Canadians and all their CO2 melting the ice caps. If that Harper character had a set, he'd come down here and tell us how he was gonna fix it?"
"But gezzus Mary, it ain't broke yet, there ain't nuthin' to fix just yet."
"GD Ontario & Queebec. They probably want to flood us so they can buy up some cheap beachfront"
...and so it most likely goes....
My very first h/t!! Warm fuzzy feeling to help combat the snow! LOL
That's about the same area my dad hailed from syncrodox. He, ironiccly enough named his sail boat after the town.
"If you want to see what Rome looked like 4,000 years ago, take a look underwater."
Let's see, that would be ca. 2000 B.C.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
It doesn't matter !!
101 There can be no discrimination whatsoever.
The Left is adamant - there can be no discrimination. They think that just because the evidence clearly shows right is right and wrong is wrong - it is not fair. The right side is discriminating against the wrong side.
102 GO TO '101'
Not another 'progress' MSM hole, halting open comments when it doesn't tend to tow the mother gaia greenie line or bash eco-deniers, oh no! Shocked I tell 'ya...

More like they've been 'Swamped by Reality'. Got to stop that free speech nonsense before this gets out of hand eh?
"Climate scientist" Jerry of the Earth Systems Evolution Program, if that isn't moronic in and of itself, obviously makes good copy.
I hope no one missed the See SOMETHING/A3 lead to the next page at the end. That's as hilarious as the artist's rendition.
GW is a perfect fit for journalism where mental dullards can join forces with the dubious.

The irony to me is that I have a handful of Cape Bretoner's from NS working for me here in Calgary.
Everyone....to a man has proven his worth in a piecework trade. When I first met these boys they were living in a tent and working for a fool who ripped them off. I respect anyone that is willing to travel thousands of miles to make a better life.
They have grown on me and I'll be going down east this summer to stand up in a wedding and meet my new godchild. An honor and a commitment.
Now if we could only dummy up the center of this country we might have something.

p.s. What's the name of the boat?
Water on the brain?
One thing I learned from the Chronicle Herald story. Kelly Shiers has no idea where Rome is.

oh gawd... between relentless theoretical flooding and
toronto's carnivorous trains... i've gotta confess,
i'm starting to get a little apprehensive...
"Perhaps the white roses stand for the two young
men rendered helpless as a GO Transit train
"sucked" their friend beneath it in spite of their
screams and attempts to bang on the cars as the
train rumbled westward."
if only there were a harvard trained professor who
could save us.

We can't predict this Saturday's weather or the price of oil next week or how many schools to build next year but we can predict what the shoreline in Halifax is going to look like in hundreds of years. Riiiight.
Landis was her name. 26 foot sloop we built in the garage and driveway for over a 2 year period. Hauled in so taught the first trip out that we snaped the mast at the spreader :)
And Cape Breton is where my grand father moved the family to in the dirty 30's because that is where the oportunitys lay.
The 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Arthur Arnold (Al)Gore Jr. and the IPCC. Dr.Andrew Weaver is a scientist member of that organization.

I was saddened to see the silly and counter-productive Sierra Club of B.C. story showing Victoria at risk of being under 25 metres of water.
Climate change is a serious issue and it is alarming that an organization such as the Sierra Club would so overstate the case as to make it ridiculous.
It was even a greater concern from a professional perspective to see my name in the story as I work hard to try and give the public an accurate picture of this pressing problem.
Kathryn Molloy of the Sierra Club of Canada displays maps of Victoria's possible watery future if global warming continues unabated.
The science suggests serious societal consequences of global warming in the short term, while the changes in sea level that the Sierra Club tout happen over thousands of years. This clumsy story just makes it easy for the deniers to claim there is no problem.

I urge everyone to google sun spots lack and read the stories there about coming mini ice ages
oh yeah ?....then what about Atlantis you smarty-pants....and what about the lost continent of Mu ?
If only I believed in global warming. I live in Halifax, and I would be completely cool with this. The waterfront is hideous for the most part, and try driving/parking there! Of course we might lose much of Dartmouth. Which would be awfully sad.
this may, in fact, explain why the herald moved their office from downtown last year out towards the burbs
Black mamba...
Better start building a dyke around the breweries.
Alexander's must be perserved for it's historical signifigance. (I had my first "of age" beer there.)
oatmealeatincanuck: I figure there'd be looting. I'd be looking forward to that (if only).
Long may Landis sail well.
I'm not grok with the sailing lingo but I'm guessing the maiden voyage found the faults. So be it...and opportunity is where, when and how willing you are to find it.

I visted "Bare island," a British Fort that is near La Perouse, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. When the Fort was built on a island of solid rock in the late 1800`s, a small dock for row boats was carved out of the stone. Today, over 100 years later, the water level is still at the same place. Explain!!
The Chronically Horrid article quotes the following, without batting an eyelash:
"It's particularly important for a place like Halifax - and Nova Scotia - to get the full story, not just the one that's produced in the paper" said geoscientist, Gerry Mitrovica...
No irony there,eh?
One of the comments in that Herald piece referred to climate change skeptics as "non-believers".
So it seems climate change is a religion after all?
Amazing work! This is why I, and everyone, loves this blog!

"jjm says... climate change is a religion after all?"
that's close... but it's actually more of a cult.

I recall seeing BOB MCDONALD....the CBC's current science guru for kids doing a thingy on TVO....he spent nearly an hour, displaying the "damage to infrastructure" already done by AGW sea level rise in Halifax...
I then consulted the Canadian Fisheries and Oceans website and noted that Halifax has experience NO CHANGE +or - in the last three dacades.
And yet this knob could show damage????
This is precious, from the Chronicle Herald comments:
"twilighthours wrote:
I'm looking forward to all the amusing comments about how the eco-fear-mongers are making up this climate change stuff. I would like to remind these luddite posters that nearly every industrialized nation (including Canada and the US) has agreed that human-induced climate change is real. . .[etc etc etc]"
1. Clearly doesn't know what a luddite is.
2. *A bunch* of governments agree they'd like to have more tax revenue. Well that's indisputable evidence right there!
Alright! I might get ocean front property here yet. Too bad I'll be long gone to enjoy the view.
At least if it did happen, and we were all wrong, we wouldn't have to go to Europe to get the Venice experience.
Bring it on! Sick of these winters that never end.
Look on the bright side Halifaxians, at least your sewage will soon be pumped out further from shore.
Yay, the bonus bright side.
The cruise tourists will be able to tie up right beside the Citadel and they won't have to take that damn long walk up the hill like I had to.
And the seismic from the Maldives, that was another story.
Not a straight line in the shoot.
At least when the Maldives is flooded, we can shoot seismic in straight lines right over it then.
There's oil in them thar waters, matey.
Buried thar by the pirates no doubt.
Gee I hope the Maldives gubmint doesn't demand an apology.
A left-leaning friend brought up the plight of the Maldives a few weeks ago to make a GW point. I didn't know about the 'crisis' there,so I asked her if the ocean was rising,or were the islands sinking.Whoa, wrong question.Hell hath no fury like a cultist scorned.
CBC did a piece on the Maldives last year. The benevolent local dictator bemoaned the devastating effects of rising oceans on the one hand and bragged about developing 39 new luxury resorts there
on the other. Kind of makes you go "Hmmm". I also saw that doc about the old tree on the beach, great show. Too bad about the tree but then ecofascists don't care about the truth now do they?
"Oceans have been eating shoreline for a long time but they’re getting hungrier..."

How colorful!!
